Groom, family walk 28 km for wedding due to drivers’ strike in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: A groom and his family members had to walk 28 kilometres to reach the bride’s village in Odisha’s Rayagada district for the wedding, as they could not arrange a vehicle due to the drivers’ strike.

They walked all night on Thursday from Sunakhandi panchayat under Kalyansinghpur block to reach Dibalapadu village where they tied the knot on Friday.

A video showing the groom and his family members including a few women walking at night went viral on social media.

“No transport was available due to the drivers’ strike. We walked all night to reach the village. We had no other option,” one of the groom’s family members said.

The marriage was solemnised on Friday morning. But the groom and his family members stayed at the bride’s house, waiting for the drivers’ association to withdraw the strike so that they can return home.

The Driver Ekta Mahasangh has launched the indefinite strike across the state from Wednesday demanding social welfare measures like insurance, pension, formation of a welfare board and others.

The strike by the drivers of commercial vehicles in Odisha was on Friday put on hold for 90 days following an assurance by the state government that all their demands would be fulfilled.

The announcement by the Drivers’ Ekta Mahasangh came barely a few hours after Chief Secretary P K Jena and DGP S K Bansak appealed to the striking drivers to withdraw the stir.

The strike by over two lakh drivers has hit the normal life for which people including office goers and tourists remained standard at different places. This has also resulted in price rise of essential commodities.

Telangana: Determined groom marries unwell bride at hospital

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: In an incident that makes one recall Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao’s 2006 hit film ‘Vivah’, a man, Tirupathi walked into a hospital on Thursday morning, determined to tie the knot and emerged a married man.

Tirupathi, a resident of Prof Jayashankar Bhupalpally district, and Shailaja, of Lambadipally village in Chennur mandal, were set to get married on Thursday morning. Unexpectedly, Shailaja got sick and was hospitalised. She underwent a minor surgery and was under the observation of doctors post-op.

Due to the unforeseen circumstances, all the relatives thought that the wedding would be postponed. However, it had little to no effect on the groom.

In a move that took the bride and her family by surprise, the groom, Tirupathi, walked into the bride’s hospital room with garlands and a magalasutram.

He exchanged the garlands with Shailaja while she sat on her hospital bed, in their own little bubble not really minding the medical equipment around them.

They tied the knot in the hospital room surrounded by a few close relatives as the amused medical staff and patients looked on.

The newly wed couple posed away for pictures which when posted on social media went viral.

The groom reportedly did not want to postpone the ceremony and so completed the ritual at the time previously suggested by the priests.

The new couple also seemed to have managed to complete some other rituals such as Jilakara Bellam and Talambralu.

Farrukhabad: It was mathematics that led to a wedding being called off in Uttar Pradesh’s Farrukhabad district.

A 21-year-old bride called off her wedding when the groom failed to count currency notes.

The shocking revelation came during the marriage rituals when the priest grew ‘doubtful of the man’s behaviour’ and informed the girl’s family.

The bride, Rita Singh, immediately walked off from the dais which led to a verbal spat between the two families and the police were called.

The bride’s family claimed that until the day of the marriage, they were unaware that the 23-year-old groom was ‘mentally weak’.

Mohit, the bride’s brother, said, “Marriages usually happen in good faith and the mediator was a close relative, so we trusted him and did not meet the guy. When the priest told us about his odd behaviour, we decided to conduct a test and gave him 30 currency notes of Rs 10 to count which he could not. After knowing about his condition, Rita refused to marry him.”

After the girl called off the wedding, a heated argument ensued between the two families. The matter reached the police who tried to mediate but the bride was not willing to give in so the baraat had to return.

SHO Anil Kumar Chaube said, “No police complaint has been filed in the matter yet.”
