‘Grand tamasha’ Congress describes PM Modi’s Bengaluru roadshow

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Saturday called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “master of distortion” and accused him of caring only for his “grand tamasha” and not the inconvenience caused by his 26-km roadshow in Bengaluru.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh alleged ambulances were stuck on roads due to the chaos caused by the roadshow and said that Modi should cancel the second part of the roadshow slated for Sunday.

With just four days to go for the Karnataka assembly polls, Modi held a massive roadshow from Someshwar Bhavan RBI Ground in Bengaluru South to Malleshwaram’s Sankey Tank.

    MS Education Academy

The prime minister will hold another roadshow on Sunday morning.

“The Master Of Distortion and Incitement (‘Abuse’ No. 92??) is arriving in Bengaluru today. We already know what he’ll say to inflame prejudice and bigotry,” Ramesh said on Twitter ahead of Modi’s roadshow.

He said the prime minister will stay absolutely silent on the real issues of Karnataka like “40 per cent commission sarkar, intolerable price rise, rising unemployment, and a forever under-construction and dug-up Bengaluru”.

“This time the despair is so high that his #40km40percent roadshow over 2 days is locking up an entire city, creating chaos & uncertainty for students writing crucial exams, and felling a number of trees,” the Congress leader said.

“Have you ever seen a PM this desperate,” he asked.

After the roadshow, Ramesh said Modi should cancel its second part scheduled for Sunday.

    “Ambulances stuck, chaos on road!

“If the PM has any shame left or even an iota of concern for the people of Bengaluru, he would immediately cancel part 2 of the #40km40percent roadshow tomorrow. But we all know that all he cares for is his Grand Tamasha,” Ramesh tweeted.

He also shared a video of a traffic jam.

In another tweet, he said, “Jawans have been martyred, Wrestlers are protesting, Manipur is burning And all the Prime Minister can think of is rallying to save the BJP from a humiliating defeat in Karnataka. Pathetic priorities!”

Modi’s three-hour roadshow traversed through parts of south and central Bengaluru, touching about a dozen assembly segments. He waved at large crowds that gathered on both sides of the route.

Later, he addressed a rally in Badami and said the overwhelming response he received in Bengaluru during the roadshow made him believe that it is the people who are contesting the Karnataka elections on behalf of the BJP.

He said that the love and affection he received in Bengaluru was “unparalleled”.

  • Telangana’s grand Secretariat, a brainchild of KCR, thrown open

Telangana’s grand Secretariat, a brainchild of KCR, thrown open

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Turning a new leaf in its history, India’s youngest state Telangana on Sunday opened a new building of its Secretariat, the nerve centre of state’s administration equipped with state-of-the-art features and built with a unique design.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao inaugurated the complex by occupying a chair in his chambers on the sixth floor and signing a few files. A group of priests performed the rituals with chanting of Vedic hymns.

Ministers, leaders of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and senior officials presented bouquets to congratulate him on the occasion. Many ministers and other public representatives bowed down to touch the feet of Chief Minister KCR.

    MS Education Academy

Ministers, Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari, secretaries and other top officials occupied their chairs in their respective chambers simultaneously.

A brainchild of Chief Minister KCR, the Secretariat complex has come up near the banks of Hussain Sagar lake in the heart of the city at the same piece of land where old buildings of Telangana Secretariat and earlier undivided Andhra Pradesh stood.

The building, termed as a symbol of Telangana’s progress, boasts off two massive domes. National emblem atop the huge domes has taken the building to its planned height of 265 feet, making it the tallest state Secretariat in the country.

The integrated complex housing the offices of the chief minister, ministers, chief secretary and all other secretaries and heads of departments, reflects the pride of Telangana and would stand as a role model for other states, says the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government. It has been named after the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, Dr B.R. Ambedkar.

Built at a cost of over Rs 600 crore, the Secretariat is a six-storey structure with seven lakh square feet of built-up space and equipped with all modern facilities.

The rituals associated with the inauguration of the building began Sunday morning. Sudarshana Yagam was performed by Vedic pandits. Minister for roads and buildings Vemula Prashant Reddy and his wife performed Dwaralaxmi puja.

After the Sudershana Yagam, Chandi homam and vastu homam were performed.

Chief Minister KCR arrived at the Secretariat at around 1.15 p.m. After getting down from the car at the main gate and accompanied by a few ministers and top officials, he walked towards the special tent to perform puja before driving into the complex. At the entrance KCR took a salute from a police contingent before unveiling a plaque and cutting the ribbon to formally inaugurate the building.

The structure has been built in the Indo-Saracenic style that blends the Indo-Islamic architectural features generally with domes. The multiple domes and arches of the building perfectly fit in this style representing the syncretic and liberal Deccani style, expressing Telangana’s quintessence.

Designed by the Chennai-based Architects Ponni Concessao and Oscar Concessao, the complex has been built by Shapoorji Pallonji and Company Pvt Limited with all the Indian Green Building Council norms, meeting the stipulations of fire safety, disaster management and other mandatory regulations.

The construction work started in January 2021 amid Covid-19 and court cases, but was completed in a record time of 26 months. According to officials, usually it takes five years to complete the works of such a huge construction.

The building, a fusion of different cultures, has been built with a height of 265 feet on an area of 10,51,676 square feet in a sprawling 28 acres. It has 34 domes, including two huge domes, which add attraction to the complex.

The six-storey Secretariat, with 635 rooms, 30 conference halls and 24 lifts, has been built to accommodate 2,000 employees.

There are two floors with 4,500 square feet each under the dome on the sixth floor. These will be used for the President, Prime Minister and foreign guests who are on a state visit. Royal dining halls have been built in the Persian model.

According to officials, 3,500 cubic meters of Dholpur red stone, which was used for Parliament building, was also utilised for the new Secretariat. For this, a whole mine was used in Dholpur, Rajasthan. From there, the stone was transported to Hyderabad in 1,000 trucks. Red stone is used for the entire basement, while light brown stone is used from the main dome to the portico.

The government has also built Hindu, Muslim and Christian prayer halls in the Secretariat. They have been made more spacious and beautiful than before. The government has provided flexibility to get the construction done according to the wishes of the respective religious leaders.

  • Red Roses eye records and Six Nations title for Middleton’s grand finale

Red Roses eye records and Six Nations title for Middleton’s grand finale

    [ad_1]

After eight years, 85 Tests, 76 wins and 3,411 points scored, England’s head coach Simon Middleton takes charge of his final match on Saturday. It should be quite a finale, with a world-record crowd for a women’s game in excess of 53,000 expected at Twickenham as the Red Roses go head-to-head with France in a winner-takes-all Six Nations decider.

The record currently stands at 42,579, set at the World Cup final at Eden Park in November. The attendance is also sure to smash the current Women’s Six Nations record, set last weekend with 18,604 watching France v Wales at the Stade des Alpes in Grenoble.

To more than double the record shows the progress not only the tournament is making, but the entire sport. The Twickenham crowd figure will hopefully act as a springboard for more avenues of progress and it will be a boost to the hopes of the Rugby Football Union who want to sell out Twickenham for the World Cup final in 2025.

Middleton – for whom a 53,000 attendance must have seemed unimaginable when he took the job in 2015 – has said the number of tickets sold has exceeded expectation and England’s vice-captain Zoe Aldcroft told the Guardian: “It shows how much the game has come on, to have a standalone match at Twickenham. For them to think we would sell that amount of tickets, even though we have gone over the amount they thought they would sell, it’s just amazing.

“I think my heart is going to be absolutely pumping. It is the adrenaline it will bring and obviously most of the crowd will be behind England so I think that is something we really have to take confidence in and put on a good performance because that is what they are coming to see. We want to make it a good event so it can happen again and again in the future.”

The crowd will be treated to a tight match if recent history is anything to go by. England came out 13-7 winners the last time the teams met in October at the World Cup and the Red Roses defeated France 24-12 in last year’s Six Nations. England have generally had the upper hand of late, however – the last time France beat their old rivals was in the 2018 Women’s Six Nations, coming out 18-17 winners, and the loss was the last time England were defeated in the competition. The Red Roses have been on a 23-match Six Nations winning run since. England have also been handed a boost ahead of the match with their captain Marlie Packer, the prop Hannah Botterman and No 8 Poppy Cleall ruled fit.

And while England will be favourites to win their fifth successive Women’s Six Nations, France could upset the Twickenham party. England’s biggest weakness, arguably, is their handling. They have made 69 handling errors in the 2023 tournament so far and they were exploited against Wales. The Red Roses’ mistakes in the first half saw Wales score points first and they held England from scoring until the 26th minute.

France could exploit the same weakness this weekend and if effective, England may not be able to rely on a rolling maul or an Abby Dow wonder try with France’s defence impressive in the tournament thus far. Les Bleues have conceded 29 points with only England conceding fewer. France will also have extra motivation to get the trophy win with one of their stalwarts retiring – the fly-half Jessy Trémoulière starts at 10 for her last ever match. The 30-year-old has won two Six Nations titles, finished third in three World Cups and was named Women’s 15s player of the decade by World Rugby in 2020.

Poppy Cleall carries the ball during the England v France Women's Six Nations match.

England’s attack coach, Scott Bemand, is also leaving his role after the tournament alongside Middleton, for whom victory would mean a sixth Women’s Six Nations title. Middleton was the assistant coach when England won the 2014 World Cup and took over from Gary Street as head coach the following year. While Middleton did not manage to get his hands on the World Cup as head coach, losing in the 2017 and 2022 finals to New Zealand, he has overseen huge changes to the women’s game during his tenure.

    skip past newsletter promotion

In 2019, the Rugby Football Union introduced professional contracts for the first time which Middleton called a “massive opportunity” when they were awarded. Since professionalism was introduced to the team they have won every Six Nations, Middleton became the first women’s coach to be named World Rugby Coach of the Year and England set a new world record after going 30 games unbeaten.

Aldcroft spoke on the impact Middleton has had, not only on England but on the game more widely. “For us, for England, Midds has been absolutely huge,” the Gloucester-Hartpury player said. “The standards that he sets for the team and the drive that he gives us is unbelievable. It can only be from him how much we have achieved over the last few years. So he has been amazing for England rugby and women’s rugby in general.”

Middleton told BBC Sport this week: “There was always going to be an evolution process but hopefully I’ve been able to accelerate it. I’ve been clear on what I want for the squad and that is to try and get the very best support around them. Where the game is now is massively important to me and I’m very proud of the fact that we’re so in the public domain now, everyone wants to cover us and come and see us.”

  • Charles Leclerc takes impressive pole for Ferrari at Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Charles Leclerc takes impressive pole for Ferrari at Azerbaijan Grand Prix

    [ad_1]

After a frustrating and stultifying opening to the new Formula One season, Ferrari finally have a moment to savour. How much it meant was clear as Charles Leclerc climbed from his car having taken pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and vigorously pointed to the prancing horse logo on his chest. Pumped by an immaculate performance, he and the Scuderia will view this as the belated opening to 2023 they wanted – but what follows this weekend will more accurately define the scale of their challenge to a dominant Red Bull.

Leclerc has taken a battering in the opening three races. He suffered an engine failure in Bahrain, a 10-place grid penalty in Saudi Arabia and was unlucky to be punted out of the race on the first lap in Australia. After a week in which he has had to dismiss rumours of talks with Mercedes to join the team should Lewis Hamilton retire, and in which it was announced that Ferrari’s racing director, Laurent Mekies, is to leave to replace Franz Tost as team principal at AlphaTauri – a blow after the recent loss of technical director David Sanchez to McLaren – Leclerc delivered reason for the embattled team to finally breathe out.

Scrutiny is part of the gig at Ferrari but it carries more weight when the horse is lame, only adding to the intensity of the task at hand as Leclerc acknowledged of his pole. “It’s good, it feels good, the whole team needed it,” he said. “It’s part our job to deal with rumours and pressure, and sometimes it is difficult to perform under those circumstances, but we did really well.”

Ending Red Bull’s hegemony over pole position this season was reason for Leclerc to feel he had made his mark on the streets of Baku, but the Monégasque driver knows only too well that the business end of the weekend remains ahead. He has now taken pole in Azerbaijan three years in a row, but on the last two occasions was unable to convert them to victory.

A hoodoo to vanquish then but it will not be easy. Red Bull’s championship leader Max Verstappen will have his part to play and he remained optimistic about his car’s formidable race pace after being beaten into second, with the Dutchman’s teammate Sergio Pérez in third.

Before Sunday, however, Leclerc and the rest will have to reset entirely for another full day of competition as F1 adopts its new sprint race format in Azerbaijan. Having revised the unsatisfactory previous structure, Saturday will now host what is being called the sprint shootout qualifying, a truncated version of the traditional arrangement, which will decide the grid for the sprint race that will follow.

The sprint will be over 100km with points from eight to one for the top eight, while both events will be standalone and have no bearing on Sunday’s grand prix, with the sport hoping the new structure will address the shortcomings of the previous format to encourage drivers to race harder.

Charles Leclerc celebrates after taking pole position

There is no reason Leclerc should not repeat his feat on Saturday morning but the margins will be tight once more. They could not have been closer as the sun began to sink low in the sky in Baku on Friday. Verstappen had set the benchmark with a time of 1min 40.445sec on his first hot lap, pushing hard past the walls of the demanding street circuit, but Leclerc was equally brilliant in his challenge, matching the Dutchman’s time down to the thousandth of a second.

On the final laps Leclerc went out first and immediately found an aggressive but beautifully judged line, going quicker in the opening two sectors with a brilliant lap that Verstappen could not match to claim pole with a time of 1:40.203.

Behind them Mercedes were reminded of the task that lies ahead. Lewis Hamilton put in a mighty effort to take fifth but remained a full second off Leclerc’s time, while his teammate George Russell went out in Q2 in 11th place. Hamilton acknowledged they were losing time on the straights but with their new design concept not expected to make a difference until Imola in May, scrapping hard for third best once more looks their likely lot in Azerbaijan.

    skip past newsletter promotion

Verstappen currently leads Pérez by 15 points in the world championship, with Fernando Alonso in third, nine points further back. Leclerc is back in 10th, 63 points off the pace.

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz qualified fourth, Alonso and Lance Stroll were sixth and ninth for Aston Martin, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri seventh and 10th for McLaren, while Yuki Tsunoda was eighth for AlphaTauri.

Esteban Ocon was 12th for Alpine, Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant were 13th and 15th for Williams while Valtteri Bottas was 14th for Alfa Romeo.

The opening session was interrupted by two red flags, the first when AlphaTauri’s Nyck de Vries crashed out, swiftly followed by Pierre Gasly’s Alpine, both hitting the barriers at turn three. De Vries will start from 20th and Gasly from 19th.

Alfa Romeo’s Guanyu Zhou was in 16th, with Nico Hülkenberg and Kevin Magnussen in 17th and 18th for Haas.

  • Mike Pence testifies to grand jury about Donald Trump and January 6

Mike Pence testifies to grand jury about Donald Trump and January 6

    [ad_1]

Mike Pence testified before a federal grand jury on Thursday in Washington about Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, according to a source familiar with the matter, a day after an appeals court rejected a last-ditch motion to block his appearance.

The former vice-president’s testimony lasted for around seven hours and took place behind closed doors, meaning the details of what he told the prosecutors hearing evidence in the case remains uncertain.

His appearance is a moment of constitutional consequence and potential legal peril for the former president. Pence is considered a major witness in the criminal investigation led by special counsel Jack Smith, since Trump pressured him to unlawfully reject electoral college votes for Joe Biden at the joint session of Congress, and was at the White House meeting with Republican lawmakers who discussed objections to Biden’s win.

The two interactions are of particular investigative interest to Smith as his office examines whether Trump sought to unlawfully obstruct the certification and defrauded the United States in seeking to overturn the 2020 election results.

Pence had privately suggested to advisers that he would provide as complete an account as possible of what took place inside and outside the White House in the weeks leading up to the 6 January Capitol attack, as well as how Trump had been told his plans could violate the law.

His appearance came the morning after the US court of appeals for the DC circuit rejected an emergency legal challenge seeking to block Pence’s testimony on executive privilege grounds, and Trump ran out of road to take the matter to the full DC circuit or the supreme court.

The government has been trying to get Pence’s testimony for months, starting with requests from the justice department last year and then through a grand jury subpoena issued by Smith, who inherited the complicated criminal investigation into Trump’s efforts to stay in power.

The subpoena came under immediate challenges from Trump’s lawyers, who invoked executive privilege to limit the scope of Pence’s testimony, as well as from Pence’s lawyer, who argued his role as president of the Senate on 6 January meant he was protected from legal scrutiny by the executive branch.

Both requests to limit the scope of Pence’s testimony were largely denied by the new chief US judge for the court James Boasberg, who issued a clear-cut denial to Trump and a more nuanced ruling to Pence that upheld that he was protected in part by speech or debate protections.

Still, Boasberg ruled that speech or debate protections did not shield him from testifying about any instances of potential criminality.

The former vice-president’s team declined to challenge the ruling. But Trump’s legal team disagreed, and filed the emergency motion that was denied late on Wednesday by judges Gregory Katsas, Patricia Millett and Robert Wilkins.

    skip past newsletter promotion

Starting weeks after the 2020 election, Trump tried to cajole Pence into helping him reverse his defeat by using his largely ceremonial role of the presiding officer of the Senate on 6 January to reject the legitimate Biden slates of electors and prevent his certification.

The effort relied in large part on Pence accepting fake slates of electors for Trump – now a major part of the criminal investigation – to create a pretext for suggesting the results of the election were somehow in doubt and stop Biden from being pronounced president.

The pressure campaign involved Trump, but it also came from a number of other officials inside and outside the government, including Trump’s lawyer John Eastman, other Trump campaign-affiliated lawyers such as Sidney Powell and Rudy Giuliani, and dozens of Republican members of Congress.

Pence was also unique in having one-on-one discussions with Trump the day before the Capitol attack and on the day of, which House January 6 select committee investigators last year came to believe was a conspiracy that the former president had at least some advance knowledge.

  • Pence appears before Jan. 6 grand jury

Pence appears before Jan. 6 grand jury

    [ad_1]

Pence was at the courthouse for more than five hours. His appearance before the grand jury was confirmed by two people who were not authorized to discuss it publicly.

His testimony began just hours after a federal appeals court rejected Trump’s emergency bid to block Pence from testifying or limit the scope of prosecutors’ potential questions.

A three-judge panel of the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals issued an order late Wednesday denying the former president’s last-ditch effort. Though the order remains sealed to protect grand jury secrecy, POLITICO had previously confirmed Trump’s appeal, which followed a district court judge’s order that required Pence to testify.

Prosecutors are interested in Trump’s increasingly desperate effort to seize a second term he didn’t win, which intensified after he lost dozens of court battles aimed at overturning the results. Trump, aided by attorneys and allies pushing fringe legal theories, pressed Pence to use his perch on Jan. 6, when he was required to preside over a joint session of Congress to count the electoral votes certifying Biden’s victory.

As Jan. 6 approached, Trump pushed Pence to assert the power to reject or delay counting Biden’s electoral votes. But Pence resisted his pressure, ultimately determining he had no power to decide which electoral votes to count or reject. Trump lashed out at Pence after his decision became clear on the morning of Jan. 6, inflaming a crowd that Trump had sent to the Capitol to protest the election results. Later, that crowd would form a mob that overran the building, sending Pence and lawmakers fleeing for safety

Aides to the former vice president did not comment on the appeals court’s decision or Pence’s appearance but have previously indicated Pence would follow the orders of the court.

Smith subpoenaed Pence in February, prompting separate challenges by both Trump and Pence.

While Trump argued that Pence’s testimony should be barred or limited by executive privilege, Pence took a different tack. He contended that his role presiding over Congress on Jan. 6 — fulfilling his constitutional role as president of the Senate — entitled him to immunity under the so-called “speech or debate” clause, which protects Congress from executive branch intrusion.

Chief U.S. District Court Judge James Boasberg rejected Trump’s argument but agreed with Pence that the congressional immunity applied on certain topics — a historic decision that for the first time found vice presidents enjoy a form of privilege. Although Boasberg’s ruling was narrower than Pence’s attorney, Emmet Flood, had argued for, Pence opted not to appeal the decision.

Trump earlier this month sought an emergency order from the court of appeals blocking Boasberg’s ruling. But Wednesday’s order — a unanimous ruling by Judges Patricia Millett, Robert Wilkins and Gregory Katsas — rejected that effort. Millett and Wilkins are Obama appointees, while Katsas is a Trump appointee.

The ruling is a victory for Jack Smith, the special counsel probing Trump’s bid to subvert the 2020 election. Smith subpoenaed Pence in February, prompting separate challenges by both Trump and Pence.

While Trump argued that Pence’s testimony should be barred or limited by executive privilege, Pence took a different tack. He contended that his role presiding over Congress on Jan. 6, 2021 — fulfilling his constitutional role as president of the Senate — entitled him to immunity under the so-called “speech or debate” clause, which protects Congress from Executive Branch intrusion.

Millett and Wilkins are Obama appointees, while Katsas is a Trump appointee.

It’s unclear when Pence will appear before the grand jury, but Trump’s previous emergency appeals — which have nearly all failed when it comes to similar sealed orders — have occurred just days before witnesses were scheduled to appear.
