Jammu: Asserting that the Narendra Modi-led government does not interfere in the affairs of the CBI, Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Saturday said it was during the UPA regime the Supreme Court had pointed out that the CBI was a “parrot in a cage”.

Singh was replying to a question seeking his reaction about the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) summoning former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satya Pal Malik in connection with an alleged insurance scam.

Singh told reporters after a BJP programme, “The CBI is an autonomous institution. Let it act on its investigation. Nobody can interfere with it.”

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government does not interfere in the CBI’s affairs, he added.

Asked for his response on Congress leader KC Venugopal’s tweet about central agencies being the BJP’s ”lapdog”, Singh said, ”He is still carrying the mentality that used to be there during the Congress’ time.”

The Union minister also said that during the UPA regime, the Supreme Court said the CBI was a parrot in a cage.

“Post 2014, the situation has changed. In Modi ji’s government, interference in the function of the CBI does not happen. They are given full independence,” Singh said.

Yemen govt calls for int’l probe into deadly stampede in Sanaa

    [ad_1]

Aden: Yemen’s government has called for an international investigation into the deadly stampede in the Houthi-controlled capital of Sanaa, which left 87 people dead.

The government, based in the southern port city of Aden, issued a statement, calling for “an independent and comprehensive international investigation to shed light on the details and circumstances surrounding the deadly stampede in Sanaa”, reports Xinhua news agency

It added that “the recent disaster is a reflection of the ongoing hardships faced by Yemenis on a daily basis since the Houthi takeover of Sanaa in 2014, which has led to the loss of income, taxes, and widespread suffering due to hunger and poverty”.

The Houthi-run Interior Ministry said the disaster on Wednesday evening was caused by a stampede during the random distribution of cash by local merchants, without organisation or collaboration, according to the militia-run al-Masirah TV.

Ministry spokesman Abdul Khaliq Al-Ajri said that two merchants responsible for the uncoordinated distribution of money were arrested while an investigation was already launched.

A Houthi official, told Xinhua that “the stampede in Sanaa has resulted in a death toll of at least 87 people, with over 320 injured and approximately 59 in serious condition”.

Yemen has been mired in a civil war since late 2014 when the Iran-backed Houthi group seized control of several northern provinces and forced the internationally-recognised government out of Sanaa.

3rd Manipur BJP legislator quits govt post in a week

    [ad_1]

Imphal: Amidst continuing resentment among section of BJP MLAs against Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, P. Brojen Singh on Thursday became the third ruling party legislator has quit his government post, resigning as Chairman of the Manipur Development Society.

In his resignation letter to the Chief Minister, he said that he has stepped down on “epersonal grounds”.

Brojen Singh represents the Wangjing Tentha Assembly constituency in Thoubal district.

    MS Education Academy

Earlier, BJP MLAs Thokchom Radheysham and Karam Shyam quit as Chief Minister’s advisor and the Chairman of the Manipur State Tourism Development Corporation on April 17 and April 13 respectively. Both had served as ministers in the first Biren Singh led government (2017-2022).

All the three MLAs claimed that they were not given due responsibility, funds and authority to function in their posts.

In a video clip, Shyam said: “A leader should be committed and sincere instead of threatening the followers. If such threats occurred frequently then an eruption of a revolt among the followers is a must… Manipur is becoming a corruption-free state but, in corruption, only the giver and the takers will know.”

Political and informed sources said that some more discontented BJP MLAs are likely to quit their respective government posts and are now lobbying with the central party leadership seeking their intervention in the affairs of Manipur.

The aggrieved legislators include a few Kuki MLAs, who are reportedly unhappy with an eviction drive targeting the community.

“Chief Minister N. Biren Singh is likely to go to New Delhi in a day or two for a possible reconciliation with the disgruntled BJP legislators with the intervention of the central leaders,” said a party leader, refusing to be named.

The Chief Minister is yet to respond to the political developments.

Winning 32 seats in the 60-member Assembly, the BJP government retained power for a second consecutive term in the last year polls. Various other parties are supporting the BJP government too.

‘Govt failure’, says Akhilesh on India becoming world’s most populous nation

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: With India becoming the world’s most populous nation according to the latest UN data, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday termed it a result of government failure.

In a tweet in Hindi, Yadav said, “Worrying news: India’s population is the highest. Reason: failure of the government.”

Explaining the reasons, he suggested people wanted more children due to poverty and unemployment and also to lend them a hand in work and support the family.

    MS Education Academy

He said people feared child mortality because of medical shortage, besides the government failed to distribute contraceptives adequately. Not understanding the pressure of population due to lack of education was another reason for the rising population, he added.

The latest UN data showed India has a population of 142.86 crore, the most in the world. Its population by 2050 is expected to rise to 166.8 crore while China’s population would dip to 131.7 crore by that time.

  • BJP targets Odisha govt over Sambalpur violence

BJP targets Odisha govt over Sambalpur violence

    [ad_1]

Bhubaneswar: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday targeted the Odisha government over the recent clashes between two communities in Sambalpur.

Holding a press conference in Jharsuguda, Odisha BJP president Manmohan Samal alleged that the Odisha government ignored the intelligence reports due to which large-scale violence took place in the town.

“Last year also, some tension erupted during the Hanuman Jayanti celebration in Sambalpur. But it was controlled. However, this year, due to the state government’s lack of foresight and ignorance, such incidents happened,” he alleged.

    MS Education Academy

“The state government was having the intelligence report and last year’s experience. So, this year, the state should have made proper security arrangements during the procession. However, only a handful of security personnel were deployed during the April 12 procession,” Samal said.

If the state does not have an adequate police force, security forces could be called from the Centre, the BJP leader said.

“Had the government shown the same promptness it showed on April 14, the April 12 incident would not have happened,” he pointed out.

“The Sambalpur SP said that everything was pre-planned. Who had planned it? Who is the godfather behind the stone pelting and violence?” he questioned.

Meanwhile, in a statement, the BJD said “it is extremely unfortunate that when peace is returning to Sambalpur, the Odisha BJP wants to instigate for political gains. This has always been their strategy. The police have taken tough action against those involved in the violence”.

In protest of the violence, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad on Wednesday observed a 12-hour bandh in 14 districts of Odisha.
