Delhi: Man impersonates UAE govt official, cheats Leela Palace Hotel for Rs 23L

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The man, who impersonated a UAE government functionary and duped The Leela Palace Hotel in the national capital of Rs 23 lakh after fleeing without paying the bills, was finally arrested by the Delhi Police from Karnataka.

A senior police official said that the accused, identified as Mohammed Sharif, 41, stayed at The Leela Palace Hotel in the Sarojini Nagar area for three months and then fled without settling his outstanding bills of more than Rs 23 lakh. He also stole some hotel valuables.

The accused was arrested on January 19 from Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka.

Sharif stayed at the hotel from August 1, 2022, till November 20, 2022, and escaped without settling a bill of Rs 23,46,413, as per the hotel staff.

According to the FIR accessed by IANS, the man checked into the hotel with a fake business card and posed as an important functionary of the government of UAE office of His Highness Sheikh Falah Bin Zayed AL Nahyan.

“He also gave a resident card of the United Arab Emirates on arrival. It seems the guest purposely gave these cards to create a false image and garner extra trust with an intent to cheat/deceive the hotel at a later stage,” stated the FIR.

“The man had also made a few part settlements in the month of August and September 2022 worth Rs 11.5 lakh for room charges, the total outstanding still stands at INR 23,48,413 against which he had issued us a post-dated cheque worth INR 20 lakh due for November 21, 2022, which was duly submitted to our bank on September 22, 2022, but due to insufficient funds, the cheque bounced,” read the FIR.

“On November 20, 2022, around 1 p.m., the man fled with hotel valuables and this seems to be completely pre-planned since we were under the impression that by November 22, 2022 hotel will get the dues cleared through the cheque he had submitted,” read the FIR.

Based on the complaint, the Delhi Police registered an FIR on January 13 under sections 419 (punishment for cheating by personation), 420 (cheating), and 380 (theft in dwelling house, etc.,) of the Indian Penal Code.

Further investigation in the matter is on.

After banning BBC documentary on Modi, Govt asks people who have already watched the documentary to donate their eyes

    [ad_1]

On Saturday, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued directions to block the first episode of the BBC Documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’ on YouTube, and other social media platforms. The social media platform Twitter was asked to block more than 50 tweets containing the links of the video on YouTube. However, by the time the direction to delete was issued, more than a lakh people had already watched the documentary.

Ministry of Information and Broadcasting later issued another set of directions for people who have already watched the documentary. Ministry asks the people who have already watched the documentary to donate their eyes. The ministry used the emergency powers under the IT rules, 2021 to issue the directions.

On the other hand, UK has condemned the banning of broadcasting saying are we living in North Korea or in world under a British rule?

  • Govt issues guidelines for social media influencers

Govt issues guidelines for social media influencers

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Social media influencers and celebrities will face a fine of up to Rs 10 lakh, which can go up to Rs 50 lakh on repeat offence and even lead to a ban of up to six years, on violation of guidelines for them, which were released by the consumer affairs ministry on Friday.

Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh told mediapersons, while releasing the guidelines, that the whole issue is centred around consumers’ right.

“It is the responsibility of the endorser, celebrities and influencers or other advertisers to truthfully disclose whatever information the consumer must know before making any decision for purchase,” the guidelines said.

Singh further said social media influencers should disclose the nature of their endorsements.

“Individuals or groups who have access to an audience and the power to affect their purchasing decisions about a product, brand or service because of the influencer’s authority, knowledge, position or relationship with their audience,” the guidelines said.

Influencers are defined as creators who advertise products with a strong influence on the decisions or opinions of their audience. Virtual influencers, which are defined as fictional computer-generated people with realistic features of humans, are also required to disclose their endorsements, the guidelines said further.

The department noted that, “When there is a material connection between an advertiser and celebrity/influencer that may affect the weight or credibility of the representation made by the celebrity/influencer.”

These material connections include monetary or other forms of compensation, free products, contests and sweepstakes entries, trips or hotel stays, media barters, coverage and awards, or any personal, family or employment relationship, the rules note.

The influencers should be able to substantiate the claims made by them. The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 provides the framework for the protection of consumers against unfair trade practices and misleading advertisements.

The product and service must have been actually used or experienced by the endorser, the ministry said, adding that consumers can seek legal actions against those defaulting.

  • SC Asks J&K To Not Demolish Houses In Roshni Land; Refuses To Stay Govt Order For Removal Of Encroachments

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: On Friday, the Supreme Court of India refused to stay a circular issued by Jammu & Kashmir government directing deputy commissioners to remove encroachments on State Land including Roshni Land and Kachharie land by January 31, 2023, reported LiveLaw.in.

A bench of Justices MR Shah and CT Ravikumar, though expressed its disclination in not passing an order today, it orally asked the Union Territory to not demolish any houses.

“We are not passing any order today. You instruct them orally not to demolish any houses. But we will not grant a general stay…. others should not get benefit,” the bench orally told the counsel of J&K, according to report published in Livelaw.in.

During the hearing, the advocate for the petitioner argued that many tribals are residing on the land and took the Court through the reliefs prayed for.

“If stay is granted then it will benefit land grabbers also?”, Justice Shah asked.

The counsel appearing for the Union Territory clarified that the circular is mainly focused on the Roshni land. He also questioned the locus of the applicants.

“The Application was served on me yesterday. It does not even mention that the applicants live there”, he pointed out while adding that the said land only had shops and such establishments.

The Court then adjourned the matter. The matter was mentioned before the Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, earlier this week.

The Jammu and Kashmir government, on January 9, directed the removal of all encroachments on State Land, including Roshni Land and Kachharie land, by January 31, 2023. The order was passed while several review petitions challenging Roshni Act Judgment remain pending before the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

In 2020, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court held that the Jammu and Kashmir State Land (Vesting of Ownership to the Occupants) Act 2001, [popularly known as Roshni Act] is completely unconstitutional.
