    budget windfall new mexico 12158

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said Sunday she is worried the U.S. is headed toward a national ban on abortion, as state legislatures and courts move to squeeze abortion access across the country.

“It’s every social issue that you disagree with, is it stem cell research, is it fertility, drugs, whatever it is, in this context, if we’re going to use the federal courts as a way to bar and ban access, we are looking at a national abortion ban and more,” Lujan Grisham said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

The Democratic governor recently signed two bills into law protecting abortion providers and guaranteeing access to reproductive and gender-affirming care, just as a judge in neighboring Texas moved to suspend the FDA’s approval of mifepristone — one of two drugs used together to cause an abortion.

North Dakota governor signs bans on trans athletes

    [ad_1]

BISMARCK, N.D. — North Dakota’s Republican Gov. Doug Burgum on Tuesday evening signed two transgender athlete bans into law, effectively prohibiting transgender girls and women from joining female sports teams in K-12 and college.

Lawmakers in the House and Senate passed the bills with veto-proof majorities this year. If the governor had vetoed the bills or refused to sign them, the bills likely would’ve still become law.

At least 19 other states have imposed restrictions on transgender athletes. Republican lawmakers across the U.S. have drafted hundreds of laws this year to push back on LGBTQ+ freedoms, especially targeting transgender people’s everyday lives — including sports, health care, bathrooms, workplaces and schools.

Tennessee governor calls for law removing guns from dangerous people

    [ad_1]

    image

The governor made the announcement amid political turmoil in the state Legislature over a GOP-led ouster of two Democrats for leading a gun reform protest inside the statehouse this month. The Nashville Metropolitan Council, a body that has sparred with Republicans in the Legislature, reappointed one of the lawmakers, Rep. Justin Jones, to his seat on Monday. The second member, Rep. Justin Pearson, is also expected to be reinstated this week.

While some GOP states, including Florida and Indiana, have embraced red flag laws, such legislation faces long odds in Tennessee, a deep-red state with many Republican leaders strongly opposed to any effort that could be construed as limiting gun rights.

But Lee said that he’d been meeting with legislative leaders to discuss passing an order-of-protection law that would allow law enforcement to seek a court order confiscating firearms from people deemed a danger to themselves or others. Nineteen states and the District of Columbia have passed similar legislation with bipartisan support.

“I think everyone — leadership from speakers, as well as other leaders — have expressed a desire to do something and move forward,” Lee said at the police precinct that responded to the March 27 shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville that left six people dead, including three children. One of the adult victims was friends with Lee’s wife, Maria.

“I do believe we should get it done during this session,” Lee said.

  • Steven Fulop announces candidacy for New Jersey governor — an election more than two years away

Steven Fulop announces candidacy for New Jersey governor — an election more than two years away

    [ad_1]

“I’m launching my campaign now because I believe that New Jersey can become an even better place for all of us, and I will be sharing my vision over the coming months for how we will make it happen,” he added. “I’ve never backed down from a fight before, and I’m ready to work hard for all the people of our great state to deliver the results New Jersey deserves.”

An accompanying announcement video opens with images of the World Trade Center attack on 9/11 and recounts how Fulop left his job as an analyst for Goldman Sachs to join the Marines, and it includes interviews with several veterans Fulop served with. It then highlights his policies in Jersey City, like paid sick leave requirements for many businesses and a $15 minimum wage for city workers.

Jersey City, which is directly across the Hudson River from Manhattan, has seen a huge development boom under Fulop. Fulop boasted of helping attract major developments more inland from the city’s waterfront, which has seen periodic post-industrial building booms since the 1980s.

In his State of the City speech last month, Fulop highlighted the city’s efforts to make healthy food available in poor neighborhoods, a city program to resettle refugees, and deals that require developers to include affordable housing units in their projects. He’s also presided over an expansion of bike lanes.

Fulop’s candidacy itself is far from a surprise. He announced he would not seek reelection as mayor in January in what was widely viewed as a pre-gubernatorial announcement.

But it is a surprise that he announced his candidacy two years before the Democratic primary. Prospective candidates often hold off on formally announcing their candidacies because, if they accept public financing as most do, they’re be limited to $7.3 million ahead of the primary. However, a super PAC that’s run by his wife’s business partner called Coalition for Progress, which is all but officially considered Fulop’s, has $6.2 million in the bank.

Fulop spokesperson Phil Swibinski said that he does plan to pursue public financing.

Fulop, who grew up in Edison and whose parents owned a deli in Newark, was on the precipice of running for governor in 2017. He traveled the state to meet with power brokers, but suddenly backed off in the fall of 2016 to endorse Murphy, who will not be able to seek reelection due to term limits.

Fulop had been considered a top-tier candidate, and his sudden withdrawal from the race alienated and mystified some political allies at the time while boxing out then-Senate President Steve Sweeney, who was also expected to run.

Other frequently-mentioned potential Democratic candidates for governor in 2025 include Sweeney, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill and U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer.

Former 2021 gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli has also said he intends to run again, though he’s likely to face other Republicans for the nomination.

Fulop’s political career began as a no-hope candidate for Congress in the Democratic primary against then-U.S. Rep. Bob Menendez, who at the time was feuding with then-Jersey City Mayor Glenn Cunningham, who recruited Fulop. Though Fulop lost that race badly, he shocked the city’s political establishment in 2005 by winning a council seat in the city’s quickly-gentrifying Ward E.

Fulop became a critic of the city’s Democratic machine, annoying then-Mayor Jerramiah Healy and gaining some prominence as a critic of Hudson County’s all-too-frequent corruption scandals. But after defeating Healy in 2013, Fulop took the reins of the political machine and became the target of critics who questioned his ethics.

Coalition for Progress, which was founded ahead of Fulop’s expected 2017 gubernatorial run, faced several complaints from ethics watchdog groups over a $1 million donation it received from a Delaware trust that appeared designed to hide the donor’s identity. The trust was formed on December 23, 2015 and made the donation the following day.

Seven months later, in an amended campaign finance report, the super PAC revealed the donor to be Vivek Garipalli, then the owner of the for-profit hospital chain CarePoint Health, which owns a hospital in Jersey City that Fulop once recommended for an ambulance contract.

In 2014, Fulop’s then-chief of staff, Muhammed Akil, was caught on tape in what sounded like an effort to try to steer a city energy consulting contract to a specific company, circumventing a public bidding process.

“What I don’t like about this, see, f—ing straight up this is the kind of s— where motherf—ers go to jail,” Akil said on the recording, which POLITICO obtained in 2017. Fulop heard the recording, according to a deposition, but Akil remained his chief of staff for nearly a year after and even after it became public, Fulop did not completely cut ties with Akil.

Fulop’s future opponents will likely raise some of those controversies, but so far they’re not commenting.

“OK,” Sweeney, who frequently butted heads with Fulop in the lead-up to the 2017 gubernatorial election, said in a phone interview when asked about Fulop’s candidacy. “That’s not really a shock, is it?

Nitin Gadkari inspects Z-Morh Tunnel with Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha

    [ad_1]

GANDERBAL, APRIL 10: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari in the presence of Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha and Members of Parliamentary Consultative Committee on Road Transport and Highways inspected the Geo-strategically important Z-Morh Tunnel on Srinagar-Leh Highway (NH-1) today.

19 tunnels are being constructed in Jammu and Kashmir at a cost of Rs 25 thousand crore. Under this, construction work of 6.5 km length Z-morh tunnel and approach road is in progress at a cost of Rs 2680 crore. This 2-lane road tunnel is being built under the mountain glacier Thajiwas Glacier between Gagangir and Sonamarg in Ganderbal district of Kashmir.

Under the Z-Morh tunnel project, a main tunnel of total length of 10.8 meters with a modified horse shoe shape escape tunnel of total length of 7.5 meters, D-shaped ventilation tunnel of total length of 8.3 meters, 2 major culverts of total length of 110 meters and 270 meters, 1 small culvert of total length of 30 meters is proposed. Till now 75% work of Z-Morh Tunnel has been completed. A target has been set to dedicate this tunnel by December 2023.

Intelligent Traffic Management System has been installed in Z-Morh Tunnel which will make it easier to control traffic. Along with this, traffic will be facilitated through the dedicated escape tunnel. The Z-Morh tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity to the Sonamarg tourist town. The debris generated during the construction work of this project has been used for way-side facilities and development of the area.

The area of Z-Morh tunnel is strategically important as its construction will ensure seamless connectivity between Srinagar and Kargil and there will also be considerable reduction in travel time between Srinagar and Leh. This tunnel will promote social and economic development in the entire region. Tourism in Sonamarg will be promoted including activities like whitewater rafting on Thajiwas Glacier and Sindh River.

Telangana Governor clears 3 out of 10 pending Bills

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: With the Telangana government approaching the Supreme Court seeking direction to Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan to take a decision on the Bills pending with her, she has passed three legislations but sent back two others to the state government.

The Governor has also forwarded two Bills to the President for her assent and kept three others with her.

There was no clarity about the Bills which the Governor cleared, those which she sent back to the government and the ones she forwarded to Rashtrapati Bhavan.

    MS Education Academy

The government is understood to have passed Telangana Forest University Bill, Jayashankar Agriculture University Amendment Bill and Telangana Women’s University Bill

She is reported to have sent to the President Azamabad Industrial Area Amendment Bill and Telangana Motor Vehicle Tax Amendment Bill.

Her decision came on a day when the Supreme Court was set to resume hearing on the state government’s petition.

In a writ petition, the state government has brought to the notice of the Supreme Court that 10 Bills are pending with Raj Bhavan.

While seven Bills were pending since September 2022, three were sent to the Governor in February for her approval.

The petition pleaded the Supreme Court to declare as illegal, irregular and unconstitutional the delay by the governor.

“As per the mandate of the Constitution, the Governor has to necessarily clear the bills and any inaction to accord assent would lead to lawlessness,” the state government said in the Special Leave Petition (SLP).

The state argued that if the governor has any doubts on the bills, she can seek clarifications but she cannot sit on them.

“If she raises any issues, we will clarify them. She cannot sit on them and the mandate of the Constitution in this regard is clearly in favour of the state,” the government contended.

This is the second time that the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has knocked the apex court’s door against the Governor.

In February, the government moved Telangana High Court seeking direction to the Governor to give her approval to the state Budget for 2023-24. The court, however, had suggested both sides sort out the issue amicably.

Counsels of both the state government and Raj Bhavan had agreed to a compromise formula. While the government agreed to begin the Budget session of the Legislature with the Governor’s speech and the latter came forward to approve the Budget.

In November 2022, the Governor had dismissed the allegations by BRS that her office was sitting on some Bills forward by the state government for her assent. She stated that she is taking time for assessing and analyzing the Bills before giving her consent.

Education Minister P. Sabitha Indra Reddy had subsequently met the Governor to clarify her doubts on the Common Recruitment Board Bill.
