For Qatar, Rubin’s firm helped facilitate meetings with government officials and provide PR assistance, first representing them in 2021. The firm also subcontracts out work to a progressive Florida-based communications firm, Edge Communications. The decision to renew the contract with Rubin, Turnbull and Associates gave the Middle Eastern nation continued access to one of the Republican Party’s most powerful and ascendant officials. Under the contract, which was filed with the Department of Justice, Rubin’s firm, which also counts a former DeSantis staffer among its ranks, is charged with government relations, communications, and public affairs “to advance the mutual interests of Florida and the State of Qatar.”

Rubin, whose clients include the cruise company Carnival (Florida had sued the CDC over rules for cruises), Google, and Southwest Airlines, did not return a request for comment. He’s been an established figure of the state’s GOP politics, having been a longtime friend and adviser to Florida Sen. Rick Scott. Rubin and his wife also served as co-chairs of DeSantis’ first gubernatorial inauguration in 2019. Beyond Rubin, Heather Turnbull, the managing partner at Rubin, Turnbull and Associates, also served on the inaugural host committee.

Foreign governments — like businesses or advocacy groups — have long turned to well-connected operatives and advisers as a way to push their interests before the government. Now, as the Florida governor emerges as the most viable GOP presidential alternative to former President Donald Trump, foreign entities are maneuvering to make sure that they had a line into his camp.

While in Congress, DeSantis was an outspoken critic of Qatar, signing onto an inquiry regarding enforcement of Qatari-owned Al Jazeera under the Foreign Agents Registration Act. He also wrote on Twitter that he pressed the Qatari ambassador to the U.S. about the country’s “support for Iran and for the Muslim Brotherhood.”

In a statement, Qatar’s embassy maintained that the renewal of Rubin’s contract was simply a routine administrative matter and the timing was unrelated to the DeSantis presidential announcement or “any other political considerations.”

“The Embassy works with advisors in many parts of the United States as part of its diplomatic outreach mission,” the spokesperson, Ali Al-Ansari, said in an email. “Qatar’s principal interests in Florida involve expansion of bilateral trade and investment. Rubin, Turnbull assists the Embassy in promoting those interests.”

A spokesperson for DeSantis did not return requests for comment.

On April 12, the government of Japan inked a deal with the firm of Brian Ballard, a Florida lobbyist considered part of DeSantis’ inner circle. Ballard served as a co-chair of DeSantis’ inauguration earlier this year. His firm also represents Liberia, Guatemala, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (and represented Qatar years ago).

Less than two weeks later, DeSantis and his wife Casey DeSantis visited Japan, where he met with Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Japan’s Foreign Ministry released its own statements touting the visit.

In an interview, Ballard maintained that his work for Japan is bipartisan and for both Florida and Washington. He noted that DeSantis’ trip was already scheduled when his firm was brought on. However, a partner at the firm, Adrian Lukis, who served as DeSantis’ chief of staff, joined DeSantis on the trade mission, Ballard said. Lukis is a registered agent of Japan.

Ballard did not recall any government inquiring about DeSantis and said his firm recently interviewed with a “large country” that did not ask about DeSantis in the hiring process (he declined to name the country). But, Ballard conceded, there could be more business opportunities to come when a Republican nominee emerges.

“When there’s nominees in place, it probably is a very smart thing for forward thinking governments to do,” he said of foreign administrations hiring lobbyists to help them understand candidates for office.

Ballard has been through this cycle before. He began lobbying Washington at the beginning of Trump’s presidency, cashing in on his connections to Trump, who had few formal Washington ties or former staff who had spread out among the K Street crowd.

Ballard was among a small number of Trump-connected lobbyists who saw a boost in business years ago at the dawn of his presidency. After President Joe Biden won office in 2020, it fueled a similar rush of hirings. In fact, theGROUP DC — the firm where Joe Biden’s former director of legislative affairs Sudafi Henry is managing partner — registered to represent the Embassy of Japan in April, just days before the president announced his reelection campaign.

Guardrails exist to prevent foreign interference in U.S. elections, including a ban on foreign nationals giving to campaigns. The Foreign Agents Registration Act, or FARA, compels lobbyists for foreign governments to make some of the details of their work public. Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort pleaded guilty for failing to register his work for the Ukrainian government under FARA, but he was ultimately pardoned by Trump.

More recently, the presidential campaign of Republican entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy employed consultants of the Saudi-funded LIV Golf. The campaign terminated those consultants after they filed as foreign agents.

The DeSantis orbit includes individuals who had previously worked on behalf of foreign entities but have, they said, since given up those clients.

Among those on that list is David Reaboi, a conservative personality who DeSantis’ team actively tried to recruit into his corner. His team hosted Reaboi and other influencers for an excursion that stopped at the governor’s office and mansion last year.

Reaboi has been registered as an agent of the Hungarian embassy since 2020. More recently, he has become a prolific pro-DeSantis commentator. However, he maintained to POLITICO that he has not done any work for Hungary since 2021, and even when he traveled to the country for CPAC about a year and a half ago, he had no contacts with government officials. Reaboi said he did not realize he had to file with the Department of Justice to terminate the relationship but he would do so.

Although she no longer represents the client, last year, DeSantis’ rapid response director Christina Pushaw back-registered as an agent of a Georgian and Ukrainian politician — Mikheil Saakashvili — for work between 2018 and 2020. Pushaw did so after being contacted by the Justice Department.

The U.K conducted its last evacuation flight from Sudan on Saturday, as the U.S. and France also brought groups of foreign nationals out of the conflict-torn African country.

The moves come amid a deteriorating security situation in Sudan, as fighting continues between the Sudanese Armed Forces and its rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

The British government decided to end evacuation flights “because of a decline in demand by British nationals, and because the situation on ground continues to remain volatile,” the U.K. Foreign Office said in a statement.

“Focus will now turn to providing consular support to British nationals in Port Sudan and in neighboring countries in the region,” it said, noting that more than 1,888 people were evacuated on 21 flights during the operation.

A French plane arrived in Chad on Friday carrying staff from the United Nations and international humanitarian non-profit organizations. France has evacuated over a thousand people from Sudan since the outbreak of hostilities.

The U.S. State Department said on Saturday that a convoy of U.S. citizens, locally-employed staff and citizens of partner countries arrived in Port Sudan and that it is assisting those eligible to travel onward to Saudi Arabia.

“Intensive negotiations by the United States with the support of our regional and international partners enabled the security conditions that have allowed the departure of thousands of foreign and U.S. citizens,” the State Department said.

“We continue,” it added, “to call on the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces to end the fighting that is endangering civilians.”

Modi Government`s Big Decision! LPG Cylinder To Cost Rs 200 Less For These Consumers

NEW DELHI: The government on Friday extended the Rs 200 per LPG cylinder subsidy under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) by one year in the wake of high prices of petroleum products in the international market. The move will benefit 9.6 crore families. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved a subsidy of Rs 200 per 14.2 kg cylinder for up to 12 refills per year to be provided to the beneficiaries of PMUY, I&B Minister Anurag Thakur told reporters.

As of March 1, 2023, there were 9.59 crore PMUY beneficiaries. Further, the minister said the total expenditure will be Rs 6,100 crore for the financial year 2022-23 and Rs 7,680 crore for 2023-24.

The subsidy is credited directly to the bank accounts of the eligible beneficiaries. Thakur said there has been a sharp increase in international prices of LPG due to various geopolitical reasons and it is important to shield PMUY beneficiaries from high LPG prices.

An official release said that targeted support to PMUY consumers encourages them for continuous use of LPG.

“It is important to ensure sustained LPG adoption and usage among PMUY consumers so that they can completely switch to cleaner cooking fuel,” it said.

The average LPG consumption of PMUY consumers has increased by 20 per cent from 3.01 refills in 2019-20 to 3.68 in 2021-22. All PMUY beneficiaries are eligible for the targeted subsidy.

  • Vehicle Registration Cancellation Order: Government’s big action

    [ad_1]

In order to control pollution and promote circular economy, the Union Ministry of Road Transport has issued a notification of amendment in the Motor Vehicle Act, due to which the registration of these vehicles will be compulsorily cancelled.

In order to control pollution and promote circular economy, the Union Ministry of Road Transport has issued a notification of amendment in the Motor Vehicle Act, according to which the registration of all government vehicles older than 15 years will be compulsorily cancelled.

Vehicles whose registration has been renewed (beyond 15 years) will also automatically be considered cancelled. All such old vehicles will have to be disposed of at a registered scrap centre.

Vehicles of Central Government, Vehicles of State Governments, Vehicles of Union Territories, Vehicles of Corporations, Vehicles of State Transport, Vehicles of PSUs (Public Sector Undertakings) and Government Autonomous Institutions all vehicles older than 15 years will have to be scrapped. However, army vehicles are not included in this. This new order will be applicable from April 1, 2023.

Significantly, in November last year, the Ministry of Road Transport had issued a draft, in which it was said that all 15-year-old vehicles of the Central and State Governments would have to be scrapped. It was said to apply this rule to the buses and vehicles of the Corporations and the Transport Department as well. Then the government had sought suggestions and objections on the draft in 30 days. Now the government is going to implement this rule.

In November last, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had said that government vehicles that are more than 15 years old will be converted into junk. The policy related to this has been sent to the states. He had said, ‘Signed a file under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, under which all vehicles of the Government of India that are more than 15 years old will be turned into junk. I have also sent this policy to all the states, they should also adopt it.

Kejriwal government’s inaction responsible for water crisis: BJP

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The BJP on Sunday blamed the Arvind Kejriwal government’s “inaction” for wastage and shortage of water in Delhi as well as for supply of dirty water.

Delhi BJP Working President Virendra Sachdeva said that for the last decade, the capital’s people are facing the problem of irregular/short supply of water as well as of dirty water but the Delhi government and the Delhi Jal Board blame the Haryana government despite the state giving its fixed raw water quota.

Despite the BJP’s repeated demands, the Kejriwal government never convened an all-party meeting on the water crisis or on the “corruption” of the Delhi Jal Board, he said, claimung that Lt. Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena’s status report after the visit to the Wazirabad water plant and reservoir has exposed the “negligence and inaction” of the Kejriwal government.

He said the Kejriwal government’s negligence in not cleaning the reservoir is responsible for thousands of people getting water-borne diseases in Delhi every year, while it was shocking to know that the level of silt in the Wazirabad Water Plant and Reservoir is more than double the estimated level and leads to Delhi being unable to hold the water coming from Haryana and about 9 lakh million cusecs of water just flows waste into the Yamuna.

On the other hand, the silt causes supply of dirty water, he claimed, demanding that the Delhi government should immediately get the Wazirabad & Sonia Vihar Water reservoirs cleaned and bring out a Summer Action Plan for water supply.

  • UAE minister says governments should frame pro-growth, pro-climate policies

UAE minister says governments should frame pro-growth, pro-climate policies

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The UAE, India’s fourth largest supplier of crude oil, on Tuesday made a pitch for policies that hold back emissions but not progress as it saw hydrocarbons continuing to play a significant role in meeting global energy demand for some more years to come.

UAE’s Minister for Industry and Advanced Technology Sultan Al Jaber, speaking at India Energy Week, said policies should hold back emissions, not progress.

In his first international visit since his appointment as President-Designate for COP28 UAE, he made the case for a pro-growth, pro-climate agenda to support an inclusive energy transition that leaves no one behind.

Energy transition refers to the global energy sector’s shift from fossil-based systems of energy production and consumption – including oil, natural gas and coal – to renewable energy sources like wind and solar, as well as lithium-ion batteries.

Speaking at India Energy Week here, Al Jaber noted India’s strong recovery from the pandemic and that the world’s fastest growing major economy was dealing with the central question of how to embed sustainable, environment-friendly growth into its development model.

“As India’s economy surges, it is dealing with the fundamental question that the whole world faces. How to adopt policies that are pro-growth and pro-climate at the same time. How to provide for a world that will consume 30 per cent more energy by 2050, while protecting our planet. In short, how to hold back emissions, not progress,” he said.

He made the point that the size of the challenge was matched by the size of the economic opportunity. Noting the significant rise in investment in renewable energy in recent years and India’s drive to add 500 GW of clean energy by 2030, Al Jaber said the UAE was keen to partner with India and the world on advancing clean energies.

“Last year, despite an ongoing war, fears of recession and a world still recovering from COVID, annual global investment in clean energy exceeded USD 1 trillion for the first time. And the trajectory is only going up. Most of this new growth will be driven by the dynamic economies of Asia,” he said.

India’s target of 500GW of clean energy by 2030 is “very ambitious, but also very achievable.”

“The UAE is ready, willing and able to partner with you,” he said. “We have spent the last two decades diversifying our energy portfolio. We have invested in nuclear, we are investing in hydrogen and we are expanding our global renewable energy footprint to at least 100 GW by 2030. And we need everyone on this journey with us, so that together we can triple global renewable energy capacity over the next 7 years.”

Al Jaber reiterated that policies should take into account the fact that too many people, particularly across the global south, still have no or very limited access to energy. “Their needs must be met as we transition to a new energy system and accelerate progress on all aspects of the climate agenda.”

“To succeed, when the debate around climate change only seems to be getting more divisive, we must act in solidarity and unity. We must empower the Global South, where almost 800 million people have no electricity, in an inclusive energy transition. We must eliminate energy poverty… And we need to move from talking about goals, to getting the job done.

“That is why we are calling for COP28 to be a COP of Action and a COP for All. This is the decade where we must stop deliberating and start delivering across mitigation, adaptation, climate finance and loss and damage. The size of this challenge is immense, but so is the opportunity,” he said.

The COP President Designate underlined the complexity of the energy transition as a system-wide rewiring of global economies and noted that despite the impressive growth of wind and solar power, renewable energy by itself would not be sufficient, particularly to transition hard to abate industries.

“Without a breakthrough in battery storage, we must invest heavily in carbon capture, nuclear power and the hydrogen value chain. But spending on these fundamental enablers of decarbonization are less than 5 per cent of what is spent on renewables. This must change. And when it comes to change, this also applies to the oil and gas industry.

“The world still needs hydrocarbons and will need them to bridge from the current energy system to the new one. We cannot unplug the current energy system before we have built the new one. As such, we must minimize their carbon footprint, only invest in the least carbon intensive barrels and continue to reduce their intensity,” he said.
