Google faces $4.2 billion advertising lawsuit

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: A new lawsuit has been filed against Google seeking 3.4 billion pounds ($4.2 billion) in compensation for publishers for lost revenue.

According to the claim, made by ex-Guardian technology editor Charles Arthur, Google illegally used its dominant position in online advertising to reduce publishers’ profits, the BBC reported.

Google stated that it would vigorously oppose the “speculative and opportunistic” action.

    MS Education Academy

In the lawsuit, Arthur claimed that because of Google’s abuse of its position, ad-tech services were inflated, and publishers’ ad sales revenues were unlawfully reduced, the report said.

“The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is currently investigating Google’s anti-competitive conduct in ad-tech, but they don’t have the power to make Google compensate those who have lost out. We can only right that wrong through the courts, which is why I am bringing this claim,” Arthur was quoted as saying.

It is the second such lawsuit, following a similar one filed in November last year.

The claim was brought by former UK’s communications regulator Ofcom director Claudio Pollack, who is seeking damages of up to 13.6 billion pounds from Google, the report mentioned.

Meanwhile, the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal has said that Google will have to pay the fine of Rs 1,337.76 crore, imposed on it by the Competition Commission of India (CCI).

The CCI had, on October 30, 2022, imposed a fine of Rs 1,337.76 crore on Google for anti-competitive practices in relation to Android mobile devices.

Google starts testing generative AI features in Gmail, Docc

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: After announcing the upcoming generative artificial intelligence (AI) features to Workspace apps two weeks ago, Google has now started public testing them in Gmail and Docs.

The current trusted test programme includes consumer, enterprise and education users (over 18 years) in the US, reports 9To5Google.

This “small group” is invited by the tech giant to join and they must sign up and opt-in.

The testers can also leave the programme at any time.

Users in the programme can use generative AI in Gmail to draft everything from a birthday invitation to a job cover letter.

“Users can also have Google take what they’ve written and make it more elaborate or shorten it, including down to bullet points,” the report said.

On the other hand, AI in Google Docs will make the text more detailed or rewrite it.

Also, it will help users to draft blog posts or even write song lyrics.

Participants in the test programme will be able to send feedback through Gmail and Docs.

The company will expand the availability of the generative AI features “over time”, the report said.

Google denies it copied ChatGPT to train its own AI chatbot Bard

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Google has denied the reports that it is copying Microsoft-owned OpenAI’s ChatGPT to train its AI chatbot called Bard.

A report in The Information claimed that OpenAI’s success “has forced the two AI research teams within Google’s parent, Alphabet, to overcome years of intense rivalry to work together”.

According to the report, citing sources, software engineers at Google’s Brain AI group are working with employees at DeepMind, which is a sibling company within Alphabet to develop software to compete with OpenAI.

“Known internally as Gemini, the joint effort began in recent weeks, after Google stumbled with Bard, its first attempt to compete with OpenAI’s chatbot,” the report claimed.

However, a Google spokesperson told The Verge that “Bard is not trained on any data from ShareGPT or ChatGPT”.

Meanwhile, Google has announced it is opening up access to its ChatGPT competitor “Bard” as an early experiment for users to collaborate with generative AI.

Early access to Bard has rolled out in the US and the UK, and the company said it will expand the access over time to more countries and languages.

Bard, like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Bing chatbot, is based on a large language model (LLM), specifically a lightweight and optimised version of LaMDA, which the tech giant said will be updated with newer, more capable models in the future.

Users can interact with Bard by asking questions and refining their responses with follow-up questions.

  • Google to shut Jacquard smart fabric app in April

Google to shut Jacquard smart fabric app in April

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Google has confirmed that it will be shutting down the app responsible for the Jacquard accessories made by the company’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group in April.

Jacquard, a full-scale digital technology platform created for smart apparel, footwear, and other everyday essentials, was unveiled by Google in 2015 and debuted two years later on special jackets from Levi’s, reports 9to5Google.

Google’s Jacquard technology can embed touch sensors and haptic feedback into clothing, which can then be paired with a smartphone.

In effect, these smart jackets — and later smart Yves Saint Laurent backpacks — allowed users to perform specific (customisable) tasks on their phones without ever touching them.

A double-tap, for example, could play/pause music, brushing the smart fabric could change tracks, and briefly covering the sensor would mute/unmute notifications, the report said.

Several companies have released products that incorporate Google Jacquard since its initial release.

Last year, Google shut down Duplex on the Web, a technology that enables Google Assistant to automate certain user tasks for site visitors.

The company introduced Duplex on the Web during its 2019 Google I/O developer conference.

Duplex on the Web enables Google Assistant to perform different actions on the sites.

Google announces ‘Android 13 QPR3 Beta 1’ update

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Tech giant Google has announced that it will release its “Android 13 QPR3 Beta 1” update in the week of March 13.

This update will download automatically for Beta Program members, reports Android Authority.

With this update, the Beta Program users will get the QPR3 before the stable version is rolled out to the public.

VPN access expanding to all Google One members

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Tech giant Google has announced that it is expanding its VPN access to all Google One members, including members with the Basic plan that starts at $1.99 per month.

The VPN is currently rolling out and will be available in 22 countries across Android, iOS, Windows and Mac devices, the tech giant in a blogpost on Wednesday.

“VPN by Google One adds more protection to your internet activity no matter what apps or browsers you use, shielding it from hackers or network operators by masking your IP address.”

Without a VPN, the sites and applications users visit might use their IP address to track their activity or find their location.

VPN by Google One was earlier limited to only 2 TB and higher plans.

The company also introduced the “dark web report” feature for US users to help them better monitor their personal information.

Google One’s dark web report will help users to scan the dark web for their personal information — their name, address, email, phone number and Social Security number — and will notify them if found.

“Dark web report will start rolling out over the next few weeks to members across all Google One plans in the US,” the tech giant said.
