London: Former British prime minister Boris Johnson’s written defence in response to an influential parliamentary committee was published on Tuesday and in it he accepts that he misled Parliament over the partygate scandal of COVID lockdown law-breaching parties at Downing Street, but did so in “good faith”.
Johnson is due to give oral evidence to the House of Commons Privileges Committee this week and made written submissions ahead of that, in which he criticises the panel for going “significantly beyond its terms of reference”.
The 58-year-old backbench Tory MP also tries to discredit the cross-party committee’s interim report, describing it as “highly partisan”.
“I accept that the House of Commons was misled by my statements that the Rules and Guidance had been followed completely at No. 10,” reads his evidence.
“But when the statements were made, they were made in good faith and on the basis of what I honestly knew and believed at the time. I did not intentionally or recklessly mislead the House on 1 December 2021, 8 December 2021, or on any other date. I would never have dreamed of doing so,” he said.
The former prime minister, whose exit from 10 Downing Street last year had been hastened by the partygate scandal, had repeatedly denied COVID lockdown rules were broken within government quarters when asked in the Commons.
With specific reference to a surprise birthday party for him in June 2020, the former prime minister expresses shock at having been handed a fine for it following a Metropolitan Police investigation because no cake was eaten.
“I was in the Cabinet Room for a work meeting and was joined by a small gathering of people, all of whom lived or were working in the building. We had a sandwich lunch together and they wished me Happy Birthday. I was not told in advance that this would happen. No cake was eaten, and no-one even sang happy birthday’. The primary topic of conversation was the response to Covid-19,” he writes.
The Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice UK group took to Twitter to say that it is “sickening” that Johnson claimed he acted in “good faith” while accepting he misled the House of Commons over partygate.
The parliamentary committee also hit back to say his submission contains “no new evidence” in his defence.
“The evidence strongly suggests that breaches of guidance would have been obvious to Mr Johnson at the time he was at the gatherings,” the Privileges Committee had said in its interim report released earlier this month.
Johnson is due to give oral evidence to the committee on Wednesday, following which it will submit its report to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. It will be up to him to sign off on any sanction against his ex-boss, which could involve a suspension from Parliament if found to have knowingly misled Parliament.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said hectic work schedules and sedentary lifestyles bring with them their own set of challenges, underlining that a good way to keep healthy is to practice yoga even at the workplace.
His remarks came in reaction to the Ministry of Ayush tweet about Union Minister of Ayush Sarbananda Sonowal launching a one-minute video on “Y-Break” for motivating mass participation in yoga, particularly for corporate workplaces and workaholics.
“Hectic work schedules and sedentary lifestyles bring with it their own set of challenges. A good way to keep healthy is to practice Yoga even at the workplace,” Modi said.
In another tweet, the prime minister said India is committed to self-reliance in energy and furthering sustainable growth.
His tweet was in response to Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri’s tweet in which he said India’s journey to be energy self-sufficient by 2047 has begun well.
“India is now the world’s 3rd largest energy consumer, 3rd largest consumer of Oil, 3rd Largest LPG Consumer, 4th largest LNG importer, 4th largest refiner & 4th largest automobile market in the world,” Puri tweeted.

Jaipur: In what could be seen as the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) electoral entry into Rajasthan, a Tiranga Yatra was taken out in Jaipur in which AAP convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann also participated.
At a public meeting held at Ajmeri Gate after the Tiranga Yatra, Kejriwal said that he had heard that Vasundhara Raje and Ashok Gehlot share a strong friendship. When Gehlot faces a crisis, Vasundhara makes the entire party stand by him. Similarly, when the BJP was taking action against Raje, Gehlot made the Congress stand by her.
He said that since independence till date, the Congress has ruled Rajasthan for 48 years and the BJP for 18 years. Now the BJP-Congress cannot say that they did not get a chance. The condition of Rajasthan is pathetic. Farmers are committing suicide, papers are getting leaked, war widows are being insulted. From 1993 till now, you have given a chance to the BJP and the Congress alternately and both have looted Rajasthan alternately, he said.
Kejriwal stated that “there is a mutual setting between the Congress and the BJP. They accuse each other of scams during elections. After the elections, no action is taken against a single person. Our setting is for the public. We will expose the scams of both,” he added.
Former Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia was sent to jail because he is teaching poor children for free. The work that we did in Delhi is now being done in Punjab. We gave 27,000 government jobs in one year. Contract workers were regularised. Do you want this to happen in Rajasthan, he asked.
Punjab CM Mann said that God has sent a broom to sweep away the Congress and the BJP. The people of Rajasthan are also ready to sweep. Now the third option has come to Rajasthan, he announced, indicating the AAP to be the third choice after the Congress and the BJP in the state.
Maan said that if you want to change your luck, then change the button in the EVM. At the same time, it will work to change the fate of your children. Double corruption is happening due to double engine (government). That’s why there is a need to stop the double engine. There should be a discussion on the broom (AAP poll symbol) and Kejriwal in every house, he added.
