Global growth is slowing down less than previously expected, the International Monetary Fund said Tuesday in its updated World Economic Outlook.

World output is set to grow by 2.9 percent this year, down from 3.4 percent in 2022, weighed down by tightening monetary policy and the war in Ukraine.

That’s an increase of 0.2 percentage points compared with the 2.7 percent and 3.2 percent figures forecasted in October, thanks to stronger-than-expected growth in the third quarter of 2022.

Growth will resume in 2024 at 3.1 percent.

“This time around, the global economic outlook hasn’t worsened,” Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, IMF chief economist and research director, wrote in a blog post. “That’s good news, but not enough.”

Eurozone growth is expected to reach 0.7 percent this year—a 0.2 percentage-point upgrade — and 1.6 percent next. In 2022, the IMF reviewed eurozone growth upward to 3.5 percent from 3.1 percent previously because of lower energy prices and additional demand-side support measures.

Global headline inflation has peaked in the third quarter of last year, the Fund said, pushed down by a decline in commodity prices. But so-called core inflation, which excludes volatile energy and food prices, has yet to peak, spurred on by tight labor markets which generate strong wage growth.

The IMF expects global inflation to fall this year to 6.6 percent and to 4.3 percent in 2024, down from 8.8 percent in 2022 on average. Both headline and peak inflation are expected to remain higher than pre-pandemic levels in 2024.

Oracle introduces new logistics capabilities to boost global supply chains

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Cloud major Oracle is introducing new logistics capabilities within its Fusion Cloud Supply Chain and Manufacturing (SCM) offerings, that will help customers cut costs, improve accuracy and automate regulatory compliance.

Logistics leaders are overwhelmed with a recent buildup of port and shipping delays, fluctuating fuel costs, and evolving trade regulations while also being at the forefront of efforts to reduce carbon emissions of goods in transit.

“The last few years tested the flexibility of global logistics operations and many organisations have struggled to keep pace with the changing market,” said Derek Gittoes, vice president of supply chain management product strategy, Oracle.

“With Oracle Transportation Management and Oracle Global Trade Management, organisations can rapidly adapt to changes in their supply chain and logistics network,” he added.

The new capabilities help customers validate Certificate of Origin, reduce tariffs, and enter new markets.

With a deep view into the bill of materials, Trade Agreement Qualification enables customers to comply with labor regulations and prove where goods were produced via auditable records, said Oracle.

“As an increasing number of Indian businesses continue to expand overseas, the ability to respond quickly to changing demand, supply, and market conditions can be a huge competitive advantage,” said Kaushik Mitra, senior director, Cloud ERP, Oracle India.

With the new logistics capabilities, supply chain professionals will gain real-time insights across the entire supply network to make critical business decisions and respond to any global change with confidence, Mitra added.

Deliveries of weapons to Ukraine will lead to ‘global catastrophe’: Russian official

    [ad_1]

Moscow: Deliveries of “offensive” weapons to Ukraine will lead to a “global catastrophe”, Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of the Russian State Duma, has said.

“If Washington and NATO countries supply weapons that will be used to strike civilian cities and attempt to seize our territories, as they threaten, this will lead to retaliatory measures using more powerful weapons,” Volodin said on Telegram on Sunday.

“Members of the US Congress, the German Bundestag, the National Assembly of France and other European parliaments must realise their responsibility to humanity,” he was quoted by Xinhua news agency as saying.

“With their decisions, Washington and Brussels are leading the world to a terrible war: to a completely different military action from today, when strikes are carried out exclusively on the military and critical infrastructure used by Kiev,” Volodin said.

“Given the technological superiority of Russian weapons, foreign politicians making such decisions need to understand that this could end in a global tragedy that will destroy their countries,” he said.

On Friday, defence leaders from Western countries attended a meeting at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany, where they pledged further military support to Ukraine but failed to iron out divisions on sending battle tanks.

At the meeting, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged defence leaders attending the meeting to “speed up the supply of weapons to Ukraine”, the presidential press service reported.

Continued deliveries of arms to Ukraine by its allies in the West will lead to retaliation with “more powerful weapons,” a top official in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime said on Sunday.

Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of Russia’s lower house, the State Duma, threatened Europe and the U.S. with “global catastrophe” over their continued military support to the government in Kyiv, which is trying to continue retaking territory it lost in the Russian invasion.

Volodin directly invoked the use of nuclear weapons in his statement over messaging app Telegram.

“Arguments that the nuclear powers have not previously used weapons of mass destruction in local conflicts are untenable. This is because these states have not faced a situation in which the security of their citizens and the territorial integrity of their countries were threatened,” the Russian official wrote in his social media post.

The threat comes amid arguments over whether Germany will send Leopard 2 battle tanks to Ukraine to fight the Russian invasion. Kyiv has requested the German-made tanks, which it says it needs to renew its counteroffensive against Moscow’s forces. But Berlin has so far resisted the call from Ukraine and its allies to send the tanks without the U.S. making the first move, over fears of an escalation in the conflict.

Berlin also hasn’t approved deliveries of the tanks from its allies, as Germany gets a final say over any re-exports of the vehicles from countries that have purchased them.

Newly appointed German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is planning a trip to Ukraine, which could come in the next month, German newspaper Bild, a sister publication of POLITICO in the Axel Springer Group, reported on Sunday, citing an interview. Asked about the Leopard tanks, Pistorius said: “We are in very close dialogue on this issue with our international partners, above all with the U.S.”

In his Telegram post, Russia’s Volodin said: “With their decisions, Washington and Brussels are leading the world to a terrible war … foreign politicians making such decisions need to understand that this could end in a global tragedy that will destroy their countries.”

It’s not the first time that top Russian politicians threaten a nuclear escalation. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has invoked the use of nuclear weapons more than once since the outbreak of the conflict 11 months ago.

India promotes racism by being the bright spot in the global economy: Economic Experts

    [ad_1]

Critic of Govt economic policies, former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan on Saturday called Indian Govt economic policies discriminatory. Raghuram Rajan’s statement came after International Monetary Fund (IMF) said that India will be a bright spot in global economy in 2023.

Lauding India’s strong macroeconomic fundamentals, IMF said that India is in a better position to deal with the global headwinds. However, economists in India called it a bad sign as India is promoting racism by being bright spot and not dark spot. Economists said that India’s economic policies are against the Black Lives Matter movement.

Earlier, economic expert had said that India will be cornered if it doesn’t get hit by recession like rest of the world. Read here.

Reportedly, India is likely to incorporate some points in the upcoming Budget 2023 to avoid being a bright spot. The Fauxy sources suggest that the government is likely to do away with the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme and would rather donate Rs 72,000 to every Indian to ensure India is hit by recession.
