Why Gavin Newsom may give red state Democrats the blues

    [ad_1]

“They will do much better if they will strategically fund operations in Texas that are overtly political and engaged in actually winning races,” said Matt Angle, who directs the Lone Star Project, a Texas committee devoted to defeating Republicans.

Florida Democrats echo that view. State Party Chair Nikki Fried said she’d welcome extra resources “to highlight the failures of Ron DeSantis,” but there are limits. She also said Newsom’s favorite California-versus-Florida framing, which resonates with some West Coast liberals, would backfire in DeSantis’ backyard.

“What would not be helpful is a comparison between the two states,” Fried said. “Florida is very different from California.”

Newsom has cast the effort as a moral imperative. In the launch video for the campaign, the governor — who is shown at one point marching across an iconic Sacramento bridge with hundreds of Democratic activists — decries the right’s policies on issues like abortion, guns and voting rights against a mashup of polarizing GOP figures.

In a Thursday email to supporters, he touted press coverage of the tour as evidence that “it’s working.”

It’s not an unexpected play from a governor who has long portrayed himself, and California, as a defender of democracy, enacting world-leading environmental policies and gun restrictions and expanding abortion access for people from out of state.

But this strategy bets that the message of a California governor — who made his fortune in fine wines and has deep ties to elite San Franciscans like Nancy Pelosi — can resonate elsewhere. While Newsom’s advisers comprise the dominant campaign team in California, they have little experience with the politics of conservative America.

Newsom and his people swear he’s not going to challenge President Joe Biden in 2024. But the PAC play reads like a classic bid to win friends and allies ahead of a future run.

“I think that he’s planning a campaign in the event that President Biden plans not to run for reelection,” Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa said in an interview, and “if he’s out there helping Democrats, he’s building a reserve of goodwill that would come in handy in 2028.”

Since defeating a recall effort in 2021, the governor has shifted his gaze away from California without suffering political consequences. He barely ran a reelection campaign last year and still won 60 percent of the vote.

Back home, Democrats are viewing this as a classic Newsom move. The governor is known to spend hours a day absorbing far-right media and often laments conservatives’ ability to dominate the narrative. “Somehow, Democrats are constantly on the defense,” he wrote in a recent campaign email. “… That has to end. We have to flip the ‘red state freedom’ narrative on its head.”

A cash infusion could certainly buoy Democrats fighting uphill battles in conservative states or competitive races in purple areas. Newsom kicked off the endeavor with his own leftover campaign cash and is soliciting donations, money that could go a long way for candidates in states and down-ballot races who have otherwise been starved of resources.

“Everyone needs to be doing this,” said David Pepper, a former chair of the Ohio Democratic Party. “We’ve seen the consequence when only one side is engaging in these states — it’s a disaster.”

Chris Jones, a Democrat who challenged Arkansas GOP Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders last year, is among the beneficiaries of Newsom’s checkbook and attention. The California governor donated $100,000 to Jones’ campaign last year and visited him this past week.

Jones said that as an Arkansas Democrat, he’s often felt overlooked by the party, but he sees Newsom’s visit as indicative of a wider trend. “We’re in a moment now where national Democrats are saying, ‘wait a minute, we have to look beyond the coasts and lean into the entire country,’” he said.

National Democrats are also backing the effort. Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison in a statement said that he’s “glad to see Governor Newsman making the case about what we’ve accomplished, what our values are, and the clear contrast with MAGA Republicans.”

Newsom has been known to use his donor list to boost Democrats and lambast his enemies, sending out fundraising emails with subject lines like “Indiana” or “DeSantis and Abbott,” referring to the Florida and Texas governors. The new campaign website promotes the importance of preserving democracy and American values, but under the “threats” section, Newsom lists DeSantis, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.

Newsom’s brand of political prodding, though popular among his progressive devotees, may not be the messaging red-state Democrats are looking for. It’s a problem Angle, the Texas organizer, has seen before. Democrats there need to show the “the contrast between responsible mainstream Democrats and irresponsible, extreme Republicans,” he said — not “more ‘turn Texas blue’ pep rallies.”

“The resources are needed, and there is some smart money that gets spent in Texas from outside,” Angle said. “But Texans, even Democrats, resent people coming in and acting like they’re bringing fire to cavemen.”

One adviser granted anonymity to speak about the governor’s strategy said Newsom knows that his presence is not necessarily an asset for red-state Democrats who would prefer cash to appearing with a leading progressive.

“He’s self-aware enough to know where he’s helpful and not helpful,” the adviser said.

But Newsom’s penchant for seeking the spotlight, combined with the long odds of Democrats winning in the South, have seeded doubt about the plan.

“It just strikes me as a kind of a stunt,” said James Carville, a Democratic political operative with deep experience in the South. “We’re not going to carry Oklahoma anyway, or Kentucky for that matter.”

Nathan Click, who also worked on Newsom’s gubernatorial campaigns, said it was the governor’s idea to travel outside of California to go after the GOP, noting his sizable chunk of leftover contributions. “How do you use that money for good?” he said.

For months, Newsom has called for national Democrats to go on the offensive when it comes to lightning-rod issues like gun control, abortion and LGBTQ rights. His new effort is the most concrete step in that direction. The hybrid PAC can channel money toward independent expenditure advertising, campaigns and get-out-the-vote efforts in other states.

Aside from the cash, Newsom has something red-state Democrats don’t: political security. With a Democratic supermajority in the statehouse, Newsom hasn’t been hemmed in by a need to moderate his rhetoric — and can go after Republicans without much fear of retribution.

“Personally, I wouldn’t have said the things he has said and the way he has said it,” Jones, the Arkansas candidate, said, noting that Newsom’s solid electoral footing gives him the freedom to go on the attack in ways he could not.

Randy Kelley, chair of the Alabama Democratic Party, said he welcomes Newsom’s attention. State Republicans are “still fighting the Civil War,” he said, noting the ban on critical race theory and efforts by Gov. Kay Ivey to funnel education funds toward prison construction. Republicans have controlled both chambers of the state Legislature in Alabama since 2010, and only one of its seven congressional seats is held by a Democrat. As of January, gun owners can carry concealed weapons without a permit.

Democrats there don’t know much about Newsom, Kelley said, but that doesn’t matter as much as the assistance.

“Whatever message he has, it can’t hurt Alabama,” Kelley said. “It can only help.”

Uddhav tried to give ‘supari’ to kill me, claims Narayan Rane

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Union minister Narayan Rane on Wednesday claimed Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray had tried to give contracts to kill him.

Addressing reporters here, the BJP MP also alleged when Thackeray was chief minister of Maharashtra (from November 2019 to June 2022), he was responsible for corruption in the procurement of medicines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Uddhav Thackeray had tried to give contracts to kill me. I used to receive calls from those people (who were given the contracts) warning me about it. Uddhav tried to give ‘supari’ (contract) to many people to kill me, but none of them could ever touch me. Some of them even warned me that they were being contacted for such supari,” he claimed.

    MS Education Academy

Rane also wondered whether Thackeray’s second house, informally known as “Matoshree 2” is legally constructed.

Responding to a query on the alleged attack on a woman Shiv Sena (UBT) worker in Thane, Rane claimed she was not beaten up severely and that the issue has been blown out of proportion.

The Union minister disapproved the language used by Shiv Sena (UBT) mouthpiece Saamana in its Marathi and Hindi editions and said he would raise a complaint in the Press Council of India.

He also slammed Thackeray, a day after the latter termed Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis a “worthless” home minister.

  • DU planning to give professors 5-year extension post retirement to boost research culture

DU planning to give professors 5-year extension post retirement to boost research culture

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi University is paving the way to give professors and senior professors an extension of five years following retirement to promote research culture and re-employ research oriented academicians, a senior varsity official said on Tuesday.

At present, the retirement age of the faculty is 65 years and no extension was given to teachers.

The university has prepared a set of guidelines for the re-employment of “research-oriented academicians”.

    MS Education Academy

The official, however, stated that the guidelines will only apply to professors teaching at the varsity departments, centres, schools, and institutions, and are not applicable to colleges of the university.

The re-employed professors will hold the positions on a contract basis, he said.

The 14-point guidelines, prepared by a committee, will be presented during the upcoming meeting of the Executive Council (the highest decision-making body of the university) on April 10 for approval.

“The retirement age of academicians at the university is 65 years. However, the university wishes to bring provisions to give an extension of five years for professors. We are hopeful that the guidelines will be approved in the next meeting. This step will help in promoting a research culture and for the re-employment of research-oriented academicians,” the official said.

According to the guidelines, the application for the same should be submitted before the date of superannuation of the teacher. The application will be then placed before the screening committee for further processes.

The screening committee will have a chairperson nominated by the vice chancellor. Besides the chairperson, the panel will also have chairperson of the research council; Dean of Research; Dean of the faculty concerned; Dean of Academic Affairs; Head of the Department concerned, and Joint Registrar, as members.

The re-employed professor will not hold any administrative position and the financial power will be limited to him, the guidelines stated.

“The re-employment of a professor/senior professor shall be subject to the University’s clearance with respect to her/his conduct as a teacher, her/his disciplinary record as well as financial prudence,” the guidelines read.

“No teacher shall continue to remain in such re-employment after attaining the age of 70 years. The re-employed professor/senior professor shall be given an office in the department and if required shall share the laboratory with another faculty,” they added.

The re-employment will also be subject to the university’s clearance concerning his conduct as a teacher, his disciplinary record as well as financial prudence, mentioned the guidelines.

Meanwhile, a section of teachers has opposed these guidelines, saying it would give rise to favouritism culture.

“Moreover, they (the university) are trying to build a hierarchy system within the university guideline that would not be applicable for college teachers,” Rajesh Jha, a former Delhi University Executive Council member, said.

  • Generous Givers: British Muslims Give Rs 10,000 Crore In Charity In A Year

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The British Muslims are Europe’s generous givers as far as charity goes. A survey report made public early this year said that British Muslims give nearly one billion pounds a year, which is more than Rs 10,000 crores.

A research report published by the London-based think tank, the Ayaan Institute, reports that UK Muslim humanitarian charities raised £708M for causes in 2020. It also estimates that this amount, combined with Muslim giving to UK charitable causes (including 2752 mosques and prayer venues), means UK Muslims generously give at least £1Bn a year to charity, projected to reach £4Bn by 2050.

Ramzan, the Muslim month of fasting, is a major contributor to charity across Europe and especially in the UK. A report said UK Muslims give on average more than £130 million to charity this month.

The donations are so hugely expected that the Charity Commission for England and Wales issued an advisory. “Ramadan is a time of huge generosity among British Muslims, and the recent earthquake in Turkey and Syria, as well as the ongoing impact of the cost-of-living crisis, make it especially important that their charitable contributions support good causes through registered charities. Regulators are therefore issuing advice to remind British Muslims to make checks, ensuring their donations reach registered charities.”

Early March, William and Catherine, the prince and princess of Wales, showered praises on British Muslims for raising record funds to aid victims of the earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria. The royals, with the princess wearing a headscarf, visited the Hayes Muslim Centre to thank volunteers who raised 30000 pounds within a few hours. Late last year, they raised more than 13 million pounds for flood-devastated Pakistan.

Part of the charity goes to the relief and rehabilitation of refugees across the world. A report by Brown University in the United States said that around 37 million people (3.70 crore), mostly Muslims, have become refugees or displaced since the start of the War on Terror in 2001.

This year, local issues will remain the key pressure on Muslim charities in the UK. Islamic Relief, the London-based major Muslim charity said that an estimated 16 lakh British Muslims have landed in poverty and deprivation because of the cost-of-living crisis. This makes up almost half of the British Muslim population.

  • Musk will give Twitter workers stock awards based on $20 bn valuation

Musk will give Twitter workers stock awards based on $20 bn valuation

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Elon Musk has finally broken his silence on giving stock awards to employees, saying that they will get stock awards based on a roughly $20 billion valuation.

It is less than half of $44 billion for which Musk acquired the micro-blogging platform, reports The Wall Street Journal.

“I see a clear, but difficult, path to a >$250B valuation,” he told employees in an email.

He said that Twitter is being reshaped so that the company “can be thought of as an inverse startup.”

In a separate email, Twitter told employees it is offering new equity grants to staff that will start to vest after six months.

In about a year, the company will offer a liquidity event in which they can cash out some of that equity.

The new grants will vest over four years, according to the Journal.

Twitter spent nearly $630 million on stock-based compensation in 2021.

It had more than 7,500 employees and now, the company is down to about 2,000 workers after Musk laid off thousands in several rounds of layoffs.

Despite Elon Musk’s efforts to monetise Twitter, the micro-blogging platform reported a massive 40 per cent drop in revenue and adjusted earnings for December 2022.

Several advertisers “ditched the social-media platform following Elon Musk’s takeover”, the Wall Street Journal had earlier reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

In an update to investors, Twitter reported a 40 per cent decline (year-over-year) in both revenue and adjusted earnings for December 2022.

The company recently made a first interest payment to banks that lent $13 billion to help Musk buy Twitter.

Musk had predicted in November that Twitter may go bankrupt.

Give Maha two more airports, Aditya Thackeray urges Scindia

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT)’s ex-Minister Aditya Thackeray on Wednesday urged Union Minister for Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia to sanction two new airports in Palghar and Fardapur (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar), and sought clarity on the status of the proposed airports in Pune and Nashik.

He said that the development of these airports would boost progress and enhance passenger connectivity, industry, agriculture and tourism in these regions.

Thackeray Jr. referred to the Union Budget 2023-2024 and welcomed the plans for 50 airports/helipads/ports to be developed/upgraded in the country, but since details were lacking leading to confusion, he asked Scindia to accord priority for civil aviation development in Maharashtra.

He pointed out that during his tenure as a Maharashtra Minister, his focus was to push several key projects including a third airport for Mumbai at Palghar and the development of the Fardapur airfield.

While the Navi Mumbai Airport will be ready soon, Mumbai will require a third airport in the next 10 years, and the former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had asked the Maharashtra Airport Development Company to start working on the Palghar airport.

This, he claimed in the 2-pager, would provide many benefits, including a revenue generator if it turned out to be a passenger airport, cargo hub and offer parking facilities for aircraft.

On the Fardapur project which the Thackeray government was exploring, Thackeray Jr. said that thousands of tourist flock to view the marvels of Ajanta-Ellora caves in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad), but the nearest airport there is 160 kms away, making the trip arduous.

Thackeray Jr. also urged Scindia to resolve the issues pertaining to the Nashik and Pune airport – the latter’s expansion plans or a new airport has been a long-debated demand that can afford the state’s cultural capital a global connectivity.

Referring to Nashik, he said it is a matter of great pain as it is one of the holiest cities with a rich heritage like Pune and needs to be tapped with an airport of global standards.

“I have only mentioned a few of Maharashtra’s multiple points of potential and roadblocks in the sector of civil aviation, directly linking it to industry, agriculture, tourism growth… I hope you will take cognisance of my humble request and give justice to Maharashtra’s civil aviation needs,” Thackeray Jr concluded.

Mumbai: Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut has come in support of Nawazuddin Siddiqui after he broke his silence and released a statement regarding the allegations being made against him by his estranged wife Aaliya.

Kangana said that it was much-needed for Nawazuddin to speak for himself because silence is not a solution to all the problems.

Kangana took to her Instagram Stories and shared: “Was much needed @nawazuddin._siddiqui saab…silence does not always give us peace…I am glad you issued this statement (folding hands emoji).”

    image 18

She also shared the screenshot of the statement issued by Nawazuddin, who recently reacted to the allegations made against him by Aaliya Siddiqui.

Aaliya accused Nawazuddin of using his power to take custody of her kids and allegedly raping her. She also shared a video from outside her bungalow stating that she is not allowed to enter his house and left with her kids on the road at midnight.

He wrote in his statement: “I am termed as a bad guy everywhere because of my silence. The reason I have kept quiet is because all this tamasha will somewhere be read by my small children. Social Media Platforms, Press & A bunch of people are really enjoying my character assassination on the basis of one sided & manipulated videos. There are few points, I would like to express – First of all me and Aaliya do not stay together since several years, we are already divorced but we definitely had an understanding only for our kids. Does anyone know, why my kids are in India and not attending school for 45 days, wherein the school is sending me letters everyday that it’s been too long an absence.

“My kids have been made hostage for past 45 days & are missing their schooling in Dubai.”

He also further asserted that Aaliya has been paid approximately Rs 10 lakh per month for the past two years and 5-7 lakhs per month before moving to Dubai with his children, excluding the school fees, medical, travel, and other leisure activities.

  • Can’t give additional DA even if beheaded, says Mamata Banerjee

Can’t give additional DA even if beheaded, says Mamata Banerjee

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said in the Assembly that her government will not be able to provide additional dearness allowance (DA) to the state government employees “even if she is beheaded”.

Her comments come at a time when the joint forum of the state government employees have already announced observing a strike on March 10 in demand of the DA arrears.

“The previous Left Front regime denied payments of DA arrears year after year. After we came to power, we increased the DA payment manifold. How much more do you want? What else will satisfy you? If you do not like me, you can behead me,” she said on the floor of the house during the extended budget session of the Assembly that started from Monday.

Banerjee also referred to the annual leaves enjoyed by the state government employees in West Bengal, which, according to her, is much more than what is enjoyed by their counterpart in the Union government or in other states. “State government employees on an average enjoyed leave to the tune of 40 days every year. In states like Tripura and Uttar Pradesh, the employees there do not enjoy so many facilities,” she said.

She also said that the West Bengal government has continued with the pension scheme even though many state governments had done away with it. “Huge money is going from the state exchequer for this payment of pension. What do you want? Shall we pay the DA arrears and close down the pension scheme,” she asked.

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari later told the newspersons that the state government should first try to control wasteful expenditures on accounts of festivals and fairs and concentrate on revenue generation before giving such excuses for not paying the DA arrears. “Today or tomorrow, the state government will have to pay the DA arrears as rightly pointed out by the court that getting DA is the legitimate right of the employees and not a fruit of charity,” he said.
