Acid attack on minor girl: Karnataka Minister meets victim

Bengaluru: Women and Child Development Minister Halappa Achar on Saturday visited the minor acid attack victim undergoing treatment at a hospital
    in Ramanagara district of Karnataka.

The girl was attacked with chemical (thinner) by a man from Kanakapura on Friday evening.

Consoling the girl and her mother, the minister assured them of stringent action against the accused as per law.

While interacting with the media, Minister Achar said that acid had burnt the girl’s back, shoulders and eyes. He further said that the Government will have zero tolerance against such incidents.

The accused has already been arrested and an FIR has been registered at the Kanakapura police station. He said that he has already discussed the matter with the District Superintendent of Police and suggested appropriate action.

“This is a monstrous act and such incidents must not recur. As soon as I got information about the incident this morning, I put aside all the work and expressed my concern on behalf of the Government. The girl is responding to treatment and will be examined by a cornea specialist,” the Minister said, adding that the government will help in the treatment with specialist doctors.

The acid attacker has been identified as Sumanth, a mechanic and a resident of Kurupete in Kanakapura. The incident had taken place near the Narayanappa Lake bypass road in Kanakapura on Friday.

Preliminary investigations suggested that the accused had made a call to the victim and asked her to come. When she came, he professed his love to her. When she refused, the accused threw acid used for cleaning the vehicle engines on her face leaving the left side of the face, including the eye, damaged. The police suspect that the accused had used a chemical (thinner) for the attack.

According to police, the two were in a relationship for a year. Recently, after a fight, the girl had severed all ties with him.

The police had formed a special team to nab the accused who had disappeared after the incident.

Kanakapura Town police have registered the case also under the Pocso Act and IPC Sections.

  • Turkey-Syria earthquake: 17-year-old girl rescued as hunt for bodies continues

Turkey-Syria earthquake: 17-year-old girl rescued as hunt for bodies continues

    [ad_1]

Bodies continued to be retrieved from rubble across southern Turkey on Thursday as the death toll from the earthquake neared 42,000 and anger mounted among survivors, who said lax building standards were as much to blame as the tremor itself.

A lone survivor, a 17-year-old girl, was pulled from ruins in the nearly destroyed city of Antakya, in a moment of relief for rescuers. But the almost miraculous rescue was dwarfed by an ongoing recovery operation that shows little sign of slowing down.

Such is the scale of destruction in cities such as Antakya, Kahramanmaraş and Adiyaman, that officials fear thousands of victims are yet to be found.

Rescue teams continue to work frantically across vast tracts of urban ruins, with diggers picking gently at heaped piles of rubble until a body is located. Weary rescuers then switch to cutting tools and spades, attempting to pry victims from the indistinguishable remains of their homes and placing them in body bags.

The familiar pattern has shown little signs of slowing in the south-eastern city of Adiyaman, where local people say the death toll far exceeds official figures.

“I don’t feel death any more,” said Yousuf Dogan, watching two bodies being recovered. “It has become natural to me. I’ve lost 70 family members and counting. This will end up being one of the biggest death zones in the country.”

Similar refrains come from across southern Turkey as residents try to salvage what remains of their families and belongings. But their grief is being subsumed by anger over the scale of destruction in some areas, compared with nearby communities that have remained largely unscathed.

Developers who constructed buildings that failed to meet safety standards have borne the brunt of anger. But permissive regulatory environments that facilitated the rapid construction of lower-quality structures are in the sights of survivors, who are calling on Ankara to explain how such homes were allowed to be built.

Survivors pulled from rubble 10 days after earthquakes in Turkey – video

Up to 650 people are believed to have died in one block alone in Antakya – a high-end development that completely collapsed in the quake. Turkey has ordered the arrest of more than 100 developers and builders, but officials who authorised the construction have so far escaped.

Meanwhile, the UN has announced an appeal for $1bn in relief funds for victims in southern Turkey, where, as well as almost 37,000 deaths, up to a million people have been displaced by what the Nato secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, said was the biggest ever natural disaster on Nato soil.

A separate appeal for almost $400m has been launched for neighbouring Syria, where close to 6,000 people died in the government-held areas of Aleppo and the north-west of the country, which bore the brunt of damage.

Another 1 million Syrian residents of Turkey are believed to have been affected by the disaster, with many having fallen between the cracks of Turkey, which is caring for its citizens, and the UN, which has been roundly criticised for its slow response.

“The Turkish government gave Syrians with temporary protection a permission to go to north-west Syria for three months at least and a maximum of six months, so many Syrians thought they have a better chance of surviving in the next few months at least in Syria,” said Labib al-Nahhas, the head of diplomatic outreach at the Syrian Association for Citizens’ Dignity.

“Syrian refugees return to north-west Syria because they have no other options, and no meaningful aid and assistance is given to them. It’s a forced return.”

Up to 2,300 bodies have been returned to Syria from southern Turkey, while 2,800 Syrian citizens have voluntarily gone back through the Bab al-Hawa crossing.

“Syrians are afraid that the absence of any real effort from the UN to help them rebuild their lives in south Turkey is a prelude to a forced return to regime areas,” Nahhas said.

Up to 120 aid trucks had crossed into Syria as of Thursday. However, local officials say aid needs dwarf the amount of relief being received, with large numbers of people having no shelter or protection against the winter.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development said on Thursday that the economic toll of the quake in Turkey could reach $25bn, equating to 2.5% of the country’s GDP.

Turkey earthquake: Girl, 17, rescued from rubble after over 248

Turkey earthquake: Girl, 17, rescued from rubble after over 248 hours, Details Here
Over 248 hours after massive earthquakes hit Turkey, the authorities have rescued a 17-year-old girl from the rubble of a building that collapsed in the southern central province of Kahramanmaras, reported Reuters citing state broadcaster TRT Haber. Rescuers are continuing to extricate people even 10 days after the earthquake which has caused massive destruction and loss of lives in the country.

According to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the death toll in Turkey has risen to 36,187, reported Reuters. It added that more than 4,300 aftershocks have hit the disaster zone since the initial tremor.

On February 6, the first major earthquake hit central Turkey and northwest Syria with a 7.8 magnitude on the Richter scale. Turkey saw two more earthquakes of 7.6 and 6.0 magnitudes later in the day. On February 13, another earthquake of magnitude 4.7 struck Turkey’s southern city of Kahramanmaras, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The World Health Organization on Tuesday said that the massive earthquake is the “worst natural disaster” in 100 years in its Europe region. “We are witnessing the worst natural disaster in the WHO European region for a century and we are still learning about its magnitude,” Hans Kluge, WHO regional director for Europe, told a press conference.

Meanwhile, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan called the quakes “as big as atomic bombs”. He also said that hundreds of thousands of buildings were uninhabitable across southern Turkey, adding “any country would face issues we did during such a disaster”, reported Reuters.

Youth arrested for killing blind girl in Andhra

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: The police in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday arrested a youth for allegedly killing a visually impaired minor girl, an official said.

Th victim identified as — Rani, 17, was stabbed to death by one K. Raju, when she was alone at her house on Monday, a police officer said.

The incident occurred in Guntur district in Tadepalli, in a locality near the official residence of the Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.

District incharge, S.P. Vakul Jindal said: “The accused developed a grudge against the girl after she complained to her mother over his misbehavior. The victim’s mother and aunt had pulled up Raju for misbehaving with her.”

Police said: The accused identified as — Raju, 30, was not under the influence of ganja at the time of the attack. It also clarified that there was no rowdy sheet against him but now a rowdy sheet would be opened.

Jagan Mohan Reddy has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the victim’s family.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Thaneti Vanitha condemned the murder of the minor girl. She reiterated the government’s commitment to punish the culprit.

She said that police acted swiftly to arrest the accused within an hour after the incident. She made it clear that any wrongdoers, no matter who they are, would not be spared.

“It is unfortunate to witness a murder of a minor girl. The police department responded within no time and nabbed the accused. On behalf of the government, we will leave no stone unturned to punish the culprit so that such an incident is never repeated,” she said.

Vanitha slammed the Opposition for trying to take political mileage from the incident. “It is not just inhumane but shameful how the TDP is trying to get political mileage out of this tragedy. Misinformation about the incident is being spread to paint the government in a bad light. Personal rivalries are being given a different twist. I urge Chandrababu Naidu not to stoop this low,” she said.

  • Moved by earthquake in Turkey, Hyderabadi girl Khadija raises money for victims; writes heart wrenching poem

Moved by earthquake in Turkey, Hyderabadi girl Khadija raises money for victims; writes heart wrenching poem

    [ad_1]

An eight-year-old girl Khadija Ahmed in Hyderabad has sold her three poems to 10 persons and raised Rs 3000 to donate the money for the earthquake affected people in Turkey.

She was shaken by the news of the killings and damages pouring in from Turkey. She wanted to help the victims and hit upon an idea of her own.

When asked by this Siasat.com correspondent what her meager contribution would do for the victims who have lost lives, homes and everything they had she narrated a story.

“My parents had told me a story. It was about Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham). His enemy raised a massive fire as he wanted to throw him into the flames and kill him. There was this little bird that heard about the plans of that enemy and began flying with a drop of water in its beak.  On her way someone asked the bird what would you do with that drop of water. The bird replied that it would pour it on the fire. The onlooker who was surprised with the answer asked what difference that one drop of water would make. When God will ask me what you did to help my prophet I would tell Him that I did not remain a silent spectator. I dropped water to put out the flames.”

Khadija said she has been inspired by this story of the little bird.

Khadija, daughter of Kaleem Ahmed and Sumaiyah Syed, studies at Oakridge International School located in Gachibowli.

She is a grade three student who spends most of her free time in reading, painting and listening to music. Public speaking is another area where she takes interest. Her favourite author is J K Rowling.

    When the Wind brought sorrow,
    Destroying homes and families.

The Wind asked if it would be the families he would borrow,
But the people said, ‘No!’ ‘It can be anything except our people, our fantasies.’

But the Wind laughed wickedly, and said,
“I do not listen to filthy things like you.
“So hurry along, before I destroy your kids in their cosy beds!”
And the people knew, that whatever wind said was always true.

So they did whatever Wind said,
And Wind was to rule the Earth, always in everyone’s and his lifetime.

And sometimes, Wind was so dangerous that people used to be scared covered in their beds,
Some say he might die out of anger in time!

Some say he will die a vain death,
While others say that’s not true.
Some say while he dies he will have no wealth,
But many say he will come in different souls and be YOU!

Video: Syrian baby girl rescued from arms of deceased sister under rubble

    [ad_1]

Heart-wrenching videos have emerged post the two devastating earthquakes that struck Syria and Turkey on Monday, February 6, leaving tens of thousands dead.

In another video clip that emerged rescue teams can be seen pulling a little girl from the arms of her deceased sister under the rubble of their home in the city of Afrin, north of Aleppo, in Syria.

The clip indicated that the child kept holding her sister’s hand and embracing her to protect her from the rubble until she breathed her last.

It is noteworthy that despite the continuation of the search for survivors under the rubble of the devastating earthquake, the hopes of finding survivors eight days after the disaster have begun to diminish.

The number of victims rose to nearly 35,000 on Sunday, amid warnings from the World Health Organization of an imminent danger threatening more than 5 million people due to the earthquake.

The United Nations Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths, feared that the death toll in the two countries would exceed 40,000.

Visually impaired girl stabbed to death in Andhra’s Guntur

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: In a shocking incident, a visually impaired 17-year-old girl was brutally stabbed to death by a rowdy sheeter in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district on Monday.

The incident occurred at Tadepalli, in a locality near the official residence of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.

The accused, identified as Raju, had misbehaved with the girl on Sunday and when the girl complained about this to her parents, they along with some locals pulled him up.

Angry over this, Raju hatched a plan to take revenge.

On Monday, when the girl was alone in her house, the accused barged in and attacked her with a knife. Hearing the victim’s cries, neighbours rushed to her house. The girl, who was bleeding profusely, was taken to the Vijayawada government hospital but succumbed on the way.

Raju, who escaped after killing the girl, has reportedly surrendered before police. The accused has a criminal record and was suspected to be high on ganja at the time of attack.

The victim’s family demanded that the police take strong action against Raju. Some locals alleged that the police failed to check the illegal activities of the criminal elements in the area.
