    Hyderabad: Well known socialite and casino organiser Chikkoti Praveen, who was held in Thailand during a raid on an alleged illegal casino at a hotel in Chon Buri province of the country, said that he was ‘misinformed’ about the event.

    “The organizers told me that it was a Poker tournament and international players were participating in the event. Within 15 minutes after we stepped inside the premises, the police raided the place,” Chikkoti Praveen told news reporters in Thailand where he was produced before the court along with other persons held in the case.

    The Thailand police had caught 93 people – 83 Indians, six Thais and four Myanmar nationals. They seized four baccarat tables, three blackjack tables, 25 sets of cards, 209,215,000 chips, 160,000 Indian rupees, eight closed-circuit television cameras, 92 mobile phones, three notebook computers, one iPad and three card dealer machines during the raid. A logbook in which gambling credits were recorded, showing about ‘1,000 million rupee’ worth of credits in circulation, wewas also seized.

    Some of the accused claimed that they were told by the organizers of the trip that gambling is legal in Thailand. “I know casinos are illegal in Thailand. In the invite extended to us, we were told it is poker tournament. Fee for participating in the event was paid by us for the event. The court let me off with a fine,” said Chikkoti Praveen.

    The local media reported that more than 500 million Rupees, or about 200 million Baht, was gambled each day and the activities were ‘live streamed’ to India. “A Thai organizer of the gambling trip, “Sitranan”, reportedly admitted that she rented the hotel’s conference hall at a rate of 120,000 baht a day, as she insisted that the hotel has nothing to do with the gambling activities,” a report on ‘www.thaipbsworld.com’ stated.

    Parveen, is a well-known figure in the elite circles in India. He is known for organising casinos in different countries including Nepal, Thailand and Malaysia. The Enforcement Directorate registered a case against him and investigating for money laundering.

    Hyderabad: Several gamblers from the city who had gone to Thailand and were allegedly gambling at an illegal casino set up at a hotel in Chon Buri province were arrested by the police on Sunday. Among the arrested persons one person named Parveen, who is being probed by the Enforcement Directorate for money laundering.

    According to a report in ‘Bangkok post’, a news portal, the raid occurred at about quarter past midnight at the Asia Pattaya Hotel in Soi Phra Tamnak 4 in tambon Nong Prue, Bang Lamung district. The raid was done after detectives found that a number of Indian nationals had booked rooms at the hotel from April 27 to May 1, and rented a meeting room called Sampao for gambling.

    The report further mentioned that, “93 people – 83 Indians, six Thais and four Myanmar nationals were rounded up. Of the 93 arrested, 80 were Indian gamblers while others were game organisers and staff. The police seized four baccarat tables, three blackjack tables, 25 sets of cards, 209,215,000 chips, 160,000 Indian rupees, eight closed-circuit television cameras, 92 mobile phones, three notebook computers, one iPad and three card dealer machines.     Patna: A social activist in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in a district court against former Indian cricket captain and BCCI president Saurav Ganguly, cricketers Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, actor Aamir Khan and others, accusing them of encouraging gambling.

    In the petition moved in the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court, Tammanah Hashmi claimed that these sportsmen and actors are playing with the present and future of youths by making them involve themselves in gambling through various online games related to the IPL.

    “They are misleading the youths of the country and forcing them to get involved in gambling. They are luring them with attractive prizes but it can also make a youth become addicted to gambling,” he said.

    “The cricket and film icons are promoting various gaming shows and encouraging people to make teams of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Some of them have won the prizes but it also has consequences of people becoming an addict of gambling as well,” he said.

    The next hearing of this case is scheduled on April 22.

    Hashmi has filed several PILs against prominent persons on various issues in the past.

    Chennai: Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi on Wednesday returned the Bill to ban online gambling, including on online rummy games.

    The Bill against online gambling was unanimously passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly on October 18, 2022 based on a recommendation by a committee headed by Justice K. Chandru (retd.

    The Bill has been lying in the table of the Governor since then.

    The Governor had in November 2022 written to the state Legal Affairs Department seeking clarification on some sections of the bill to ban online rummy and to regulate online gaming.

    The state government had decided to bring a law to ban online gaming following the death of 22 people, who had committed suicide after they have lost heavily playing these games. After the bill was unanimously passed and the bill awaited the Governor’s consent, several people again committed suicide.

    Hyderabad: The South Zone Task Force police team raided a house at Moghalpura and arrested nine persons found gambling. Nine mobile phones and Rs. 47,200 cash were seized.

    On credible information, the Task Force team raided the house. The organizer whose name the police did not wish to reveal was taking a commission to let the participants gamble.

    The nine persons along with the property were handed over to the Moghalpura police station. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.

    New Delhi: The government has blocked 232 apps operated by overseas entities, including Chinese for being involved in betting, gambling and unauthorised loan service, according to an official source.

    Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has issued orders to block these apps following instructions from Ministry of Home Affairs.

    “The order to block 138 apps that were involved in betting, gambling and money laundering were issued last evening. Separately, an order to block 94 apps engaged in unauthorised loan service has also been issued. These apps were being operated from offshore entities, including Chinese. They were posing a threat to the economic stability of the country,” the official, who did not wish to be named , told PTI.

    Hyderabad: Fifteen leaders of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) including a deputy mayor and six corporators’ were arrested for allegedly gambling by the Rachakonda Special Operations Team at Medipally on Sunday evening.

    Acting on information, the police raided the office of Peerzadiguda municipal co-opt member Jagdishwar Reddy office and found deputy mayor K Shivakumar Goud and six corporators’ playing three card game and gambling. Six others are builders.

    The police seized huge cash, playing cards, mobile phones and other articles from the spot.

    The leaders tried to pressurize the police to let them off.

    However as the news went viral the police higher-ups directed the local police to immediately register a case.
