Andhra Pradesh HC grants bail to TDP leaders in chit fund case

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Wednesday granted bail to former Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MLC Adireddy Appa Rao and his son and TDP state executive secretary Adireddy Srinivasa Rao in a case relating to financial irregularities in a chit fund company.

They were arrested by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Andhra Pradesh on April 30. They had filed a petition for bail and the High Court had completed hearing on the same two days ago.

Appa Rao, the husband of TDP Rajahmundry MLA Adireddy Bhavani, and their son Srinivasa Rao, are directors in Jagajjanani Chit Funds Private Limited.

During the hearing on the bail petition, the counsel of the TDP leaders argued that the Depositors Act does not apply in the case. They also argued that a case was registered against them without any complaint lodged by depositors.

On behalf of the state government, Advocate General Sriram submitted to the court that the accused diverted money of the depositors for other purposes.

The main opposition TDP had condemned the arrests. TDP national president and former chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu spoke to Bhavani over phone and expressed solidarity with her.

Naidu said that the political harassment and vendetta by the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government is increasing by the day. He lamented that there is no change in the ruling party’s behaviour.

The TDP president had said the YSRCP government believed only in illegal cases and illegal arrests. He said the arrest of Appa Rao and Srinivasa Rao is another example of the YSRCP government’s politics of vendetta.

The TDP chief said despite courts reprimanding the government on many occasions, the Jagan government has not mended its ways.

Egypt’s irregular workers to be paid £1,000 from emergency fund

    [ad_1]

Cairo: Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi announced the establishment of an emergency relief fund that provides a one-time subsidy of 1,000 Egyptian pounds ($32.36) for irregular workers.

In a televised speech on Labour Day, Sisi said that several other support programmes would be launched to help irregular workers, who are among the worst impacted by economic crisis, Xinhua news agency reported.

“The emergency fund would be launched in the coming weeks and seasonal workers would receive financial support in emergencies,” he said.

Social and health accounts dues will be transferred to the fund, thus they would be invested and used in emergencies and crises for irregular workers in a sustainable manner, he added.

Sisi also instructed the Egyptian government to issue a new “Aman” certificate to cover life insurance and work injuries for irregular workers.

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Manpower in December, there are 11 million irregular workers in Egypt.

Naidu alleged that Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy does not want anybody to do business in the state. “Is CID a government investigation agency or YSRCP threatening agency,” he asked

The TDP chief said despite courts reprimanding the government on many occasions, the Jagan government has not mend its ways.

TDP’s Andhra Pradesh unit chief Atchanaidu said the party was not afraid of illegal cases and arrests. He alleged that there is no difference between YSRCP ‘goondas’ and CID officials. • Hyderabad: Siasat Millat Fund arranges burial of seven unclaimed Muslim bodies

Hyderabad: Siasat Millat Fund arranges burial of seven unclaimed Muslim bodies

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: It is indeed a great honor and blessing from Allah Almighty that Siasat Millat Fund is actively involved in the noble act of arranging dignified burials for unclaimed Muslim dead bodies. Namaz-e-Janaza (funeral prayers) for seven known Muslim bodies were offered at Jama Masjid Dar-ul-Shifa, where Qari Muhammad Abdul Bari led the prayers. May Allah Almighty grant these deceased individuals a peaceful resting place in Jannah (Paradise) and provide comfort and solace to their loved ones.

In this way, more than 5500 unknown Muslim men, women, and children have been buried through Siasat Millat Fund in the last 18 years. The bodies are collected from the morgues of Osmania General Hospital, and Gandhi General Hospital.

It should be noted that the funeral prayers of seven unknown Muslim men were offered yesterday. They were buried in the graveyard of Secunderabad.

    MS Education Academy

It is encouraging to know that there are many people who support the cause of arranging dignified burials for them through generous donations to the Siasat Millat Fund. This reflects the compassion and empathy that exists within the Muslim community towards all human beings, regardless of their identity or social status.

News Editor Siasat Amer Ali Khan, General Manager Siasat Mir Shujaat Ali, Muhammad Ismail Ahmed, Saeed Bin Nasir, Syed Zahid Hussain, Syed Ahmeduddin Qadri, Abdul Basir, Muhammad Mazhar Khan, Naveed Ahmed Khan, Muhammad Osman Al-Hajri and others attended the funeral prayers of seven unclaimed Muslim bodies at Jama Masjid Dar-ul-Shifaon on Thursday.

It should be noted that former Asst. Sub-Inspector Syed Zahid Hussain Shah Qadri has played an important role in this noble cause and he has been engaged in this noble work with his team for 18 years.

Indeed, attending funeral prayers and performing the ritual washing (ghusl) of the deceased are considered virtuous acts in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized the importance of attending funeral prayers and promised great rewards for those who do so. In a hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah, the Prophet said, “Whoever follows a funeral procession and offers the funeral prayer for it, will get a reward equal to one Qirat. And whoever attends it till burial, will get a reward equal to two Qirats.” (Sahih Bukhari)

Similarly, the act of purifying the body of the deceased before burial is also considered a virtuous act in Islam. In a hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah, the Prophet said, “Whoever washes the body of a Muslim, Allah will forgive him forty times.” (Sahih Bukhari)

Therefore, giving a dignified burial to unknown Muslim bodies can be considered a virtuous act in Islam, as it shows compassion and respect towards the deceased, regardless of their identity or social status. And Allah’s rewards and blessings are not limited to specific acts or individuals but are based on the sincerity and intention behind each action.

  • Biden commits $1B to international climate fund

Biden commits $1B to international climate fund

    [ad_1]

    image

Context: The Major Economies Forum was first launched in 2009 and now includes more than two dozen countries that produce 80 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions and GDP. It is the first such meeting since last November’s U.N. climate talks in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, where nations agreed to a “loss and damage” fund to pay vulnerable nations for irreparable climate damage.

Poorer nations have ramped up pressure on rich ones to provide more finance for combating climate change. Biden has tried to answer that call with a pledge to deliver $11 billion in climate finance annually by 2024 — but it is unclear how the administration will get House Republicans to approve that spending.

Biden said that nations must work together to reshape multilateral development banks like the World Bank to fight climate change. The Bank concluded its spring meetings last week and laid out an “evolution roadmap” to engage on climate change.

Details: The Biden administration also announced other initiatives, including a new “Methane Finance Sprint” to raise at least $200 million from public and philanthropic sources by the start of the annual U.N. climate talks in November. Biden said the effort would help the U.S. and other countries reach goals to slash methane emissions 30 percent this decade.

Biden also said he would requested $500 million over five years from Congress for the Amazon Fund, an effort to end deforestation.

Pinterest expands Creator Inclusion Fund to 5 more countries

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Photo-sharing social media platform Pinterest announced that it is expanding its Creator Inclusion Fund to Canada, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France.

The Fund is Pinterest’s incubator programme to elevate Creators from historically marginalised communities through financial and educational support, according to the company.

The company started the programme in 2021 as it saw a need to uplift Creators from communities that have been disproportionately under-represented — including Black, Latin, LGBTQIA+, Asian, Indigenous people and persons with disabilities.

    MS Education Academy

“Expanding this programme will unlock more opportunities for disproportionately underrepresented creators and content producers to gain financial support, exposure, resources and reach new audiences looking to be inspired by their passions on our platform,” Zeny Shifferaw, Creator Inclusion Lead at Pinterest, said in a statement.

Moreover, the company mentioned that since its inception, the programme has provided support and a path to success to dozens of Creators from the US, UK and Brazil across Fashion, Beauty, Lifestyle, Wellness and Food.

They have received training and deep industry insights from experts in the field, personalised consulting and a financial grant in cash and ad credits.

In February, Pinterest announced that it now has 450 million monthly active users globally, growing 4 per cent year-over-year.

The company CEO Bill Ready said the global mobile app users, which account for over 80 per cent of the impressions and revenue, grew 14 per cent.

  • DiCaprio tells D.C. jury of foreign mogul’s plan to fund Dems in 2012

DiCaprio tells D.C. jury of foreign mogul’s plan to fund Dems in 2012

    [ad_1]

“At the risk of asking a stupid question, what is it you do for a living?” prosecutor Nicole Lockhart asked after DiCaprio, 48, finished spelling his name for the court reporter.

“I am an actor,” DiCaprio replied nonchalantly.

To the uninitiated, the Hollywood heartthrob’s presence at the trial could seem almost as unlikely as the government’s central contention in the criminal prosecution: that Michel, a member of the hip hop trio the Fugees, took more than $80 million from a Malaysian businessperson, Jho Low, to support President Barack Obama’s 2012 presidential bid and later to buy influence with President Donald Trump’s administration.

But Low was friendly with DiCaprio and Michel for years and ultimately became a major funder of DiCaprio’s 2013 film, “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

U.S. prosecutors later alleged that Low was the architect of a multibillion-dollar fraud scheme that looted Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund known as 1MDB. In 2016, the Justice Department sought to seize the future profits from the film, arguing that it was paid for with money stolen from 1MDB. The feds ultimately settled for a $60 million payout, which was passed on to Malaysia’s government.

DiCaprio spent a little over an hour on the witness stand, recounting a slew of “lavish” parties where he met Low.

“He had a multitude of different parties,” the actor and film producer said of Low, who remains at large and was recently convicted in absentia by a Kuwaiti court for the 1MDB fraud and sentenced to 10 years in prison. “Some of them were on boats. Some were at nightclubs, … dinners.”

DiCaprio said Low also became a generous donor to the actor’s charitable foundation, even donating art that was auctioned in Saint-Tropez, France.

The most politically and perhaps legally salient thing DiCaprio offered up Monday was that he had a discussion with Low prior to the 2012 U.S. presidential election.

“He mentioned in passing he and possibly a group of other partners of his were going to give a significant contribution to the Democratic Party,” DiCaprio testified. “I recall him saying a significant sum, something to the tune of $20 [million] to $30 million. … I said, wow, that’s a lot of money.”

Prosecutors allege that Low was not a U.S. citizen and lacked a U.S. green card, so he was not eligible to donate to U.S. political campaigns. It’s unclear who the “partners” were, if they existed, and whether they could donate legally.

The indictment in the case alleges that Low transferred over $21 million to the U.S. for use to back Obama in the 2012 presidential race and that Michel donated about $865,000 to the Obama campaign through straw donors and about $1 million to a super PAC supporting Obama. It’s unclear what became of the rest of the money.

A spokesperson for the Democratic National Committee did not immediately respond to a request for comment on DiCaprio’s testimony.

Under cross-examination by Michel’s attorney David Kenner, DiCaprio offered even more illustrations of Low’s apparent wealth and extravagant spending. The defense attorney asked DiCaprio about a private-jet trip Low organized to Australia and then back to the U.S. about a decade ago in order to try to celebrate New Year’s Eve twice.

DiCaprio said he was hazy on the details but Low did have that goal.

“I remember a trip to Australia [with] a massive group of people,” he said. “I do remember [Low] saying that was an objective of his.”

DiCaprio said he wasn’t sure if the timing actually played out to usher in the new year twice. “It depends on how you look at it,” he quipped, prompting laughter from jurors and others in the court.

The prosecution objected to some of the repeated questions about over-the-top partying. U.S. District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly declined to allow an answer to one defense question about Britney Spears jumping out of a birthday cake for Low at one of his blasts.

However, Kenner may have scored some points for his client Monday by detailing the extensive vetting DiCaprio’s lawyer, his production team and Paramount Pictures did of Low and others involved in funding “Wolf of Wall Street.” The defense attorney passed up his opportunity last week to give an opening statement in the case, but he appeared to be suggesting that it was unrealistic to expect Michel to know details about Low’s citizenship or his alleged misdeeds when more experienced vetters apparently missed any signs of trouble in his background.

“My understanding was I was given a green light by my team, as well as the studio, to accept financing from Mr. Low,” DiCaprio told the jury. He said he believed “the background check was fine and he was a legitimate businessperson.”

Lockhart attempted to rebut some of that testimony by getting DiCaprio to acknowledge that, while U.S. political donations from non-resident foreigners are unlawful, foreign funding for films is entirely legal.

The sixth-floor courtroom at the courthouse near the Capitol was not quite full as DiCaprio began testifying late Monday morning.

However, onlookers steadily crowded the gallery as word spread about the Hollywood star making an in-person appearance. Law clerks and even one veteran courtroom clerk for another judge were seen ducking in briefly to get a glimpse of the actor better known for occupying the bow of the “Titanic” than a federal courtroom witness stand.

Paparazzi who joined the usual coterie of network television cameras staking out Trump-related grand juries at the courthouse were disappointed, as DiCaprio was whisked in and out of the building without passing the phalanx of cameras at both of the public entrances.

In 2018, DiCaprio testified in the same building before a grand jury investigating Michel, but his appearance was not reported until later.

Jurors’ reactions to DiCaprio’s testimony were hard to assess because the judge has ordered people in the courtroom to wear masks, although witnesses, lawyers questioning them and the judge typically do not.

DiCaprio said he’d known Michel since he hit stardom in the 1990s as part of the Fugees and met the band backstage at a concert. The two have been social friends since, the actor said.

The judge’s masking policy caused a complication Monday after the prosecutor asked DiCaprio to point out Michel, who was wearing a black mask. After the actor struggled briefly, Michel raised his hand in the air and pointed at the ceiling, easing the task.

An unusual number of court personnel seemed to interact briefly with DiCaprio during a short break in the testimony, but the cause for the crowding became apparent after the actor was excused shortly after noon Monday. As soon as he departed, almost every observer stood to leave the courtroom, prompting an outbreak of laughter from the judge and some jurors at the spectacle.
