Jamie Vardy salvages draw for dogged Leicester to leave Leeds frustrated

    [ad_1]

As the final whistle blew Jamie Vardy could not stop smiling but Patrick Bamford looked consumed by mental anguish.

Leicester’s former England striker had stepped off the substitutes’ bench to score a potentially season‑changing equaliser before Leeds’s centre‑forward missed a late, albeit potentially offside, sitter and decidedly mixed emotions swirled in the cool West Yorkshire air.

Some home fans called for the head of Victor Orta, Leeds’s director of football, but frustration was mixed with pride at the end of an evening in which Javi Gracia’s side had taken the lead through Luis Sinisterra as they arrested a dramatic recent slump.

Leeds are now two points and two places above the bottom three and their hopes of avoiding relegation seem touch and go but they could at least reflect on a resilient performance which prevented Leicester from making their technical superiority count.

“After competing as we did it is hard to get only one point,” Gracia said. “The players and all the people who love this club are suffering; it’s difficult to manage at this moment.”

One point and one place beneath Leeds, Dean Smith’s men are in even deeper trouble and face a potential watershed home date with Everton on Monday night. Yet despite an enduring inability to keep clean sheets they should draw hope from the manner in which they forced Leeds ever deeper during a nervy second half.

Gracia’s players still arrested a losing run which had seen them concede 13 goals in three games. The interim manager resisted a considerable clamour to drop Illan Meslier, following a string of recent errors on the 23-year-old Frenchman’s part and was rewarded with a fine performance from a goalkeeper whose once seemingly superhuman confidence had latterly appeared shot to pieces.

Meslier certainly could not have been expected to save the rising 20‑yard Youri Tielemans shot which whizzed past him in the sixth minute. He and Leeds looked crestfallen but they were rescued by a VAR review which detected an offside against Boubakary Soumaré during the fallout from the improperly cleared James Maddison corner prefacing Tielemans’ disallowed rocket.

Maddison’s deliveries are often integral to Leicester successes and the same goes for Leeds’s Jack Harrison. Sure enough from Weston McKennie’s clever reverse pass Harrison sent a wonderful cross curving towards the onrushing Sinisterra.

Thanks partly to Bamford’s smart decoy manoeuvre Sinisterra lost Timothy Castagne as he outleapt all comers to direct a header beyond Daniel Iversen’s reach. As Elland Road celebrated Gracia stood still with his arms folded and his impression impenetrable.

With Harvey Barnes subjecting Luke Ayling to an exacting workout and Sinisterra limping off after a tangle with Caglar Soyuncu, tempting fate certainly seemed unwise.

Happily for Gracia, Ayling, Liam Cooper, McKennie and company had remembered how to tackle and, protecting Meslier admirably, answered most questions Maddison and friends asked them. Both Rodrigo, deployed in the No 10 role, and Bamford proved impressive when it came to defending from the front.

Although Smith’s side shaded possession, Leeds’s new‑found capacity for making things scrappy dictated they could not do too much with it.

Or at least not until Vardy assumed centre stage and began raging against the dying of the light. Shortly after Vardy’s introduction Kelechi Iheanacho forced Meslier into a brilliant double save, involving the goalkeeper repelling his initial shot before keeping out the substitute Patson Daka’s follow‑up from the rebound. No matter that a linesman flagged the second effort offside, many spectators at Elland Road were on their feet and applauding. “All players have ups and downs,” Gracia said. “But Illan’s a great keeper.”

Meslier saved smartly again from Iheanacho before the striker, Maddison and Vardy combined superbly to silence the stadium. Stealing in from the inside left channel, Vardy lost Robin Koch before placing a right‑foot shot across the helpless Meslier. It was his second goal of the season and first in six months.

Suddenly Leeds were on the ropes and looked mighty relieved when Vardy had a second “goal” disallowed for offside before Iversen quite brilliantly repelled Marc Roca’s header from a corner and then an unmarked Bamford sidefooted wide with the keeper wrongfooted. Gracia’s insistence a VAR review would have ruled any goal out for offside was kind and quite possibly accurate but probably proved scant consolation.

“I’m a tad disappointed,” Smith said. “We could have lost it at the end but it’s nice to have Jamie Vardy scoring again.”

BJP leaders ‘frustrated’ after Nitish-Mamata meeting: Lalan Singh

    [ad_1]

Patna: JD-U national President Lalan Singh on Monday said that the BJP leaders are frustrated after the meeting of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee and are thus making all sorts of derogatory comments.

“Nitish Kumar is making efforts to unite opposition parties of the country and succeeding in it. Hence, the BJP is in big desperation and frustration. Hence, its leaders are saying anything. Their unparliamentary languages are an indication of the frustration,” he said.

His statement came after BJP state President Samrat Chaudhary’s derogatory remarks of “Mitti Me Mila Doonga” and “political bridegroom” for Nitish Kumar.

Nitish Kumar met Banerjee in Kolkata on Monday, along with Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav. After the meeting, Nitish Kumar said that the discussion on opposition unity with Banerjee took place in a very good manner.

Banerjee also said that she is glad that Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav came to Kolkata for the opposition unity. She further said that the JP movement was started from Bihar and she advocated for a meeting of all parties in Bihar followed by the plan of action and manifesto.

“We want to give a message that everyone is united. I have already told you that I have no objection to it. I wish to make the BJP zero. It has become a big hero without any work, in support of the media, making the narratives, false claims and goondaism. Nitish ji is talking to every leader of the opposition parties and I will also talk to them. There is no personal ego for me. We collectively want to work together. This is the message from me,” she said.

After Kolkata, Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav went to Lucknow to meet Samajwadi Party chief and Uttar Pradesh’s former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav for opposition unity.

‘Deeply frustrated’: Florida legislators worn out by DeSantis

    [ad_1]

One GOP legislator privately said: “We’re not the party of cancel culture. We can’t keep doing this tit for tat.” The lawmaker was granted anonymity to speak freely about the GOP governor.

“People are deeply frustrated,” said former state Sen. Jeff Brandes, a St. Petersburg Republican who has been talking to his former GOP colleagues frequently this session. “They are not spending any time on the right problems … Most legislators believe that the balance of power has shifted too far and the Legislature needs to re-establish itself as a coequal branch of government.”

The vexation in Tallahassee comes as DeSantis has struggled to gain traction nationally after weathering weeks of criticism from former President Donald Trump and other Republicans ahead of his likely 2024 announcement. DeSantis’ momentum after winning reelection in November by historic margins is beginning to evaporate. Even Florida’s GOP Legislative leaders, Senate President Kathleen Passidomo and House Speaker Paul Renner, on Wednesday declined to endorse DeSantis. While both praised the governor, they said they would wait until after the legislative session before saying who they would back for the 2024 election.

DeSantis administration officials declined to comment for this story.

DeSantis had already positioned himself as one of the most powerful governors in state history during his first term, strong-arming the Legislature to approve his congressional redistricting maps and reshaping GOP power in the state through boosting Republican voter registration numbers and endorsing school board candidates. Ahead of the session, the governor rolled out a lengthy agenda designed to give him a long line of legislative victories that he could tout if he runs for president as expected.

But after seven weeks, the toll is wearing people down. POLITICO interviewed more nearly 20 people involved in the legislative process, including Republican and Democratic legislators as well as lobbyists and legislative staffers.

Many Republicans said they support many of DeSantis’ priorities but have seen their own priority bills get waylaid or slowed down to help him. They have chafed at orders coming from legislative leaders who are working in concert with the governor’s office. Some have suggested that the GOP supermajority has made it easier for legislative leaders to ignore complaints from rank-and-file members.

“I think our Republican colleagues are done,” said state Sen. Jason Pizzo, a South Florida Democrat. “I think they are fed up. There’s obviously still some true believers and there’s some very loyal and allegiant individuals and groups … They would like him to hurry up and announce and start focusing exclusively on other stuff other than here.”

By all accounts though, DeSantis has racked up some big wins this session. Lawmakers have already passed multiple bills that the governor backed, including a ban on abortions after six weeks, a measure letting people carry concealed weapons without a permit and legislation that will no longer require a unanimous jury recommendation in death penalty cases.

On Wednesday, the Legislature sent to the governor’s desk a bill that would bar the use of certain types of investment strategies that DeSantis and other Republicans have called “woke.” Lawmakers also agreed to put on the 2024 ballot a proposed constitutional amendment that would make school board elections partisan. And a bill that would block children from attending adult-themed drag shows is also heading to the governor.

Yet some of DeSantis’ top priorities remain up in the air with less than three weeks to go, including tough new anti-immigration measures that DeSantis called for ahead of the session. One part of that package — eliminating in-state tuition rates for undocumented college students who went to a Florida high school — has yet to be introduced.

Another bill that lawmakers appear unlikely to approve would alter defamation laws and was designed to potentially set up a challenge to New York Times v. Sullivan, the landmark 1964 Supreme Court ruling that limits public officials’ ability to sue publishers. The House and Senate versions of the bill, which drew criticism from both traditional media outlets and conservative media, have languished for weeks in committee stops and legislators have not advanced them.

Renner insisted, though, that legislators this session were living up to what they told voters last fall.

“We’re doing the very things we campaigned on, we’re governing as we campaigned,” Renner said.

He acknowledged that there was a “chokepoint” earlier in the session because the House was spending most of its time on legislation being pushed by the governor and legislative leaders.

“If people are frustrated it’s probably because we had a ton of bills that the governor’s put forward that we in House and Senate leadership have put forward but,” Renner said. “There’s going to be a ton of other bills that are coming forward.”

BJPs Rana Says All Party Participants Are Rejected, Dejected, Confused, Frustrated Politicians

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: In a scathing remark, Senior BJP leader Devender Singh Rana criticized the all-party meeting organized by opposition parties in Jammu, labeling it as an assembly of “rejected, dejected, confused, and frustrated” politicians. He claimed that these politicians are unnerved by the momentous changes brought about in Jammu and Kashmir by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rana asserted that these changes have steered the Union Territory from a dark alley of death, destruction, and gloom to become a bright, resurgent, peaceful, and developing part of the country.

“The opposition cannot derail Jammu and Kashmir’s tryst with peace and normalcy”, he said and cautioned the opposition not to assume the role of agent provocateurs to mislead the people for furthering their nefarious political agenda.

In an informal interaction with the media persons, Rana stated that “the meet is yet another non-event of all those who have developed vested interest over the decades in boiling Kashmir to bake their political loaves and sustain their enterprise.” He further commented that “peace and normalcy across Jammu and Kashmir is a sort of threat for their political existence and thus they smell a rat in all that is being done for the overall good of the UT.”

“Politically mature people understand the gimmicks of the self-seeking political actors, who can go to any extent for remaining relevant in politics,” he stated.

He further remarked that “their negative and obstructive political campaigns will not deviate the efforts of heralding complete normalcy to which the BJP is committed.” Rana also highlighted the fast-changing scenario in the Valley, stating that “last year witnessed record tourist footfall that was incomprehensible years ago when Kashmir was pushed to a dark alley of bandhs and stone pelting.” He added that “such a scenario had become a new normal. That situation has now totally changed, with economic activity gaining momentum, development getting impetus, and the people’s participation in governance becoming predominantly discernible.”

As per Rana, “Some political entities obviously feel uncomfortable with normalcy dawning and the UT treading on the path of development and prosperity.” He also stated that “the peaceful and resurgent Jammu and Kashmir goes against their scheme of things.” The minister emphasized that “every segment of society is part of the growth story,” and those who pretend to be oblivious to the changes taking place in both regions, regardless of religion and caste, are betraying their sense of understanding.”

AAP ‘frustrated’ with defeat in Delhi Haj Committee election: BJP

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Delhi BJP has said that the AAP is “frustrated” after its defeat in Delhi Haj Committee election.

“It is strange that the Delhi Haj Committee was constituted by the Lt. Governor of Delhi on January 6 and Ms Atishi has today – after 40 days – reacted on it, calling the constitution of the Committee illegal,” Delhi BJP spokesperson Syed Yaseer Jilani said.

“The problem with AAP is that it can never digest defeat, and that too at the hands of a woman,” he added.

The BJP spokesperson further said that Arvind Kejriwal “does not believe in giving any position of authority to women, and he and his party are shocked to see that the BJP has given an opportunity to a woman to serve at Delhi Haj Committee”.

Jilani asserted that there is widespread “joy” amongst Muslim community especially the youth after the election of young Kausar Jahan as Chairperson of Delhi Haj Committee and “this is bothering AAP leaders”.

  • Ukraine frustrated as Germany holds back decision on supply of tanks

Ukraine frustrated as Germany holds back decision on supply of tanks

    [ad_1]

Germany has declined to take a decision on whether to give Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine at a special international summit, prompting frustration in Kyiv and a warning from Poland that lives could be lost because of hesitation in Berlin.

It had been hoped in Europe and the US that Germany would at least allow Leopards owned by countries such as Poland and Finland to be re-exported, but despite days of pleading, Berlin’s newly appointed defence minister said no final decision had been taken.

Instead, Boris Pistorius said on the sidelines of the 50-nation meeting at the Ramstein US air force base in Germany on Friday that he had asked his ministry to “undertake an examination of the stocks” of the tanks available.

    Germany’s Leopard 2

Although it was the closest Germany has come to suggesting it might be contemplating the use of the tanks in the conflict, it provoked a number of pointed comments from Ukraine and its allies as the meeting broke up without progress on what has come to be seen as the core issue.

Zbigniew Rau, Poland’s foreign minister, said Ukrainian lives would be lost because of Germany’s reluctance to act. “Arming Ukraine in order to repel the Russian aggression is not some kind of decision-making exercise. Ukrainian blood is shed for real. This is the price of hesitation over Leopard deliveries. We need action, now,” he tweeted.

Lloyd Austin, the US defence secretary, said after the meeting that there was “not a long time” available to provide Ukraine with extra equipment before the expected renewed offensives on both sides as the weather improves. “We have a window of opportunity between now and the spring,” he added.

The chair of the US joint chiefs of staff, Gen Mark Milley, said: “This year, it would be very, very difficult to militarily eject the Russian forces from every inch of Russian-occupied Ukraine.”

Milley told reporters that a “continued defence stabilising the front” would be possible, but that would depend on the delivery and training of military equipment to Ukraine.

Prior to the meeting, Ukraine’s president said pointedly that his country was waiting for a “decision from one European capital that will activate the prepared chains of cooperation on tanks”. In an address, Volodymyr Zelenskiy added it was “in your power” to at least make a decision in principle about tanks.

Poland, which had said it could donate its own Leopard 2 tanks without seeking permission from Germany, said it had participated in a meeting of defence ministers of 15 countries to make progress on the topic.

Mariusz Blaszczak, the country’s defence minister, said he was still “convinced that coalition-building will end in success”.

Berlin is at the centre of the tanks debate because it has yet to allow the re-export of any of the 2,000-plus German-made Leopard 2 tanks owned by Nato countries, holding out for the US to agree to send some of its own Abrams tanks in addition.

The US argues that its Abrams tanks, which run on jet engines, are fuel-inefficient and so difficult to supply, but earlier this week the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, directly asked the US president, Joe Biden, to send US tanks in return for sending its own Leopard tanks.

Yet Berlin said on Friday it had backed away from such a demand, leaving Germany to carry on considering the issue in isolation. Steffen Hebestreit, a German government spokesman, said Scholz was not making the decision on the delivery of Leopard 2 tanks dependent on whether or not the US delivered its M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine.

“At no time has there been any deal or demand that one thing would follow on from another,” the spokesperson said. “I find it difficult to imagine a German chancellor dictating any conditions or making demands to an American president.”

Berlin, he further insisted, did not expect Poland to carry out its threat to deliver Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine unilaterally, without receiving the necessary export licence from Germany. Hebestreit said: “All our partners will surely want to behave in a law-abiding way.”

    Leopard 2 inventories

There had been hope that Germany might, as a compromise, allow export licences to be issued to European owners of the Leopard 2, while withholding its own Leopard tanks.

But in the end that too was dashed at Friday’s meeting of 50 western defence ministers in the Ukraine international contact group. Ukraine says it wants 300 tanks to help force out the Russian invaders in the spring, although western analysts say the supply of 100 would be enough to make an immediate difference.

Zelenskiy had begun the meeting, arguing that urgent action was necessary because “Russia is concentrating its forces, last forces, trying to convince everyone that hatred can be stronger than the world”.

It was vital to “speed up” weapons supplies, Zelenskiy added, because the war with Russia amounted to a battle between freedom and autocracy. “It is about what kind of world people will live in, people who dream, love and hope.”

Earlier this week, Britain said it would donate 14 of its Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine, while Poland said it wanted to follow suit with a similar number of German-made Leopard 2s. Finland has said it wants to donate tanks, while France has indicated that it is considering supplying some of its own Leclerc armoured units.

But it is the Leopards that are considered crucial because they are the dominant tank model in Europe. Germany itself has 321 Leopards in active service, plus another 255 in storage, out of a Nato total of more than 2,300.

Austin also announced a fresh $2.5bn (£2bn) military aid package to Ukraine, including 59 more Bradley fighting vehicles, on top of 50 already announced earlier this month, and 90 Stryker eight-wheeled armoured personnel carriers and 350 Humvees.

The Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the war in Ukraine was escalating, and argued that Nato countries were playing a direct role in the conflict, although the western military alliance is not at war with Russia.

“It really is developing in an upward spiral. We see a growing indirect, and sometimes direct, involvement of Nato countries in this conflict,” Peskov said.

“We see a devotion to the dramatic delusion that Ukraine can succeed on the battlefield. This is a dramatic delusion of the western community that will more than once be cause for regret, we are sure of that.”
