    Hyderabad: A Hindu right-wing group allegedly thrashed three Muslim fruit sellers in Sangareddy on Monday reportedly grievously injuring one. However, police have refuted any communal connection to the attack.

    According to accounts, the group also forced the traders in Patancheru to drink alcohol during the assault.

    The fruit sellers filed a complaint and a case has been registered.

    “The event was not motivated by hatred, but rather by a disagreement over fruit costs. According to him, the dispute resulted in a few individuals attacking the fruit sellers,” Patancheru DSP Bheem Reddy was quoted by India Today.

    The suspects have been booked under sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 341 (wrongful restraint), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

    All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi spoke to the DSP and has pushed for Section 307 (attempt to murder) to be added to the charges stating that one victim’s hand has been fractured and another lost his teeth in the assault.

    SRINAGAR: Additional Chief Secretary (ACS), Agriculture Production Department (APD), Atal Dulloo, today asked the officers for prioritizing movement of fertilizers and fruit laden trucks in and outside the Kashmir valley during a meeting held here at Civil Secretariat.

    The meeting was attended by Secretary in Agriculture Production Department, Inspector General of Police Traffic J&K, Special Secretary APD, Directors of Horticulture Jammu/Kashmir, Directors of Agriculture Jammu/Kashmir, Director of Horticulture P&M, SSP Traffic Rural Kashmir/Jammu, SSP National Highway, Chairman of Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers Union, President of Fruit Mandi Sopore, President of CA Stores, President of Fruit Association Anantnag, and representatives of fertilizer companies including CCFCL, IFFCO, IPL and NFL while Kashmir based officers and participants participated online.

    During the meeting, ACS directed for priority movement of fertilizer trucks to and fro from Kashmir and Jammu. He also instructed that fruit-laden trucks from CA stores going outside Kashmir be given priority to reach their destinations.

    He added that with the arrival of vegetable season, trucks carrying vegetables and other perishable items will also be given priority on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

    IGP Traffic JK assured that all the fruit-laden and vegetable-laden trucks would be given priority. He urged upon the fruit associations to provide registration numbers and paste sticks so that they may be given priority during the movement on highway.

    The meeting also discussed stock availability of fertilizers in the Kashmir valley.

    ACS urged upon the fertilizer companies to transport fertilizers to Kashmir in sufficient numbers to avoid any shortage during the peak season. (GNS)

    Srinagar, Mar 25: The cold units most of whom are in Lassipora area of Pulwama have proven very beneficial for fruits growers as it has provided them a choice to sell their produce as per their will besides maintaining chain of supply and demand.

    Experts while talking to news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said that apples kept in cold storage in Kashmir are sold at better prices, as the growers see it fit on demand.

    However, during harvesting season, farmers are pumping tons of apples into cold storage units across the valley, but the already set up cold storage units didn’t meet the demand, which suggests that the valley needs more cold storage units.

    Azhar Anjum, Manager of one of the cold storage units, said that cold storage units have come in handy for Kashmiri apple growers who witnessed a very low demand for the fruit despite bumper crops last season.

    He said that cold storage units are very beneficial as it increases the shelf life of apples by 6-8 months and helps in maintaining the chain of supply and demand.

    He said the cold storages have “revolutionised” the horticulture sector as it gives a choice to a grower to sell his produce “as per will”.

    Though the number of cold storage units is still very less and can store just little produce but main thing growers need to do is to focus on smart packing and grading, he said.

    “Our apples are the most delicious in the world but we are still using traditional ways of packing and grading due to which customers are preferring the apples from other countries that are packed smartly,” he said. “We have been still using hay and other things in packing and using high quality apples in upper layers while low quality and less shining apples in lower layers are creating problems for all.”

    He said: “We need to learn to pack apples in small boxes or trays in a smart way that can be given as gifts on functions as well.. If we are able to do so we can easily compete with apples from other countries and earn a livelihood as well.”

    Shahid Ahmad, an assistant manager of another cold storage unit at SIDCO Lassipora in Pulwama said that cold storages were running full and they did not have capacity to accommodate more growers.

    He said that their unit has a capacity to store three lakh apple boxes and around 40 percent of the produce is still here.

    Some growers have sent their produce to markets where it fetches about Rs 1200-1300 per box compared to Rs 300-500 in 2022 autumn of 2022.

    He also said that growers need to focus on grading and packing more in every season then and only then Kashmiri apples will easily compete with fruit from other countries.

    People associated with the apple industry say that introduction of cold storages has revolutionised the industry besides providing jobs to hundreds of labourers.

    Kashmir on average produces over 20 lakh metric tonnes of apple every year, a figure that in some years touches 25 lakh metric tonnes.

    The 2017 economic survey in J&K said that half of Kashmir’s population is directly or indirectly dependent on the apple industry and over 3.5 lakh hectares are under apple cultivation—(KNO)

    Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir is all set to revolutionise its fruit industry with introduction of the High-Density Plantation (HDP) system and production of quality planting material.

    The UT’s Department of Horticulture, in collaboration with Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture (ICAR-CITH), have got together to provide technological intervention for the new project.

    The project aims to enhance the production capacity of planting material to 111 lakh in the first five years, develop 390 hectare of nurseries in public and private sectors, rejuvenate 2,000 hectare of orchard areas, and produce planting material to cover 5,500 hectare under HDP of 12 fruit crops.

    Additionally, the project aims to strengthen plant testing and quality control, tissue culture, and virus indexing labs besides building capacity by training 5,000 farmers and 150 technical manpower from SKUAST and the Department of Horticulture. The project shall create 200 new enterprises in the form of HD nurseries and provide potential jobs to 25,000 persons.

    “The current lack of quality planting material in the region limits the potential of the fruit industry and costs the region approximately Rs 500 crore in imports, which also brings in new pests and diseases,” Additional Chief Secretary, Agriculture Production, Atal Dulloo, said.

    “The mission of the project is to domestically produce quality planting material, reduce imports, prioritize high-density plantation of fruit crops, transform old orchards into more productive orchard systems, and diversify the JK fruit industry to capture the national and international market,” he added.

    “Production of Designer Plants for Promotion of High-Density Plantation and Rejuvenation of Orchards” is one among the 29 projects, which were approved by the Jammu and Kashmir administration after being recommended by the UT Level Apex Committee for holistic development of agriculture and allied sectors.
