No formal discussions at ICC board meet on Pakistan playing World Cup games in Bangladesh

New Delhi: ICC sources on Wednesday dismissed speculations about Pakistan playing their World Cup matches in Bangladesh instead of India due to the political tension between the two countries, terming it a “figment of imagination”.

The rebuttal came after reports that discussions were held during the recent ICC board meeting in Dubai about Pakistan possibly playing their league games in Bangladesh.

“No one knows if PCB chief Mr Najam Sethi has had any informal discussion with his Bangladeshi counterpart Najmul Hasan Papon but this can be said with a degree of certainty that no such discussions happened officially that Pakistan will play in Bangladesh,” an ICC board source privy to the developments told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

The source did point out that procurement of visas was an issue that was discussed and, contrary to conjectures made from the PCB’s part, the Indian cricket board has assured of all assistance.

“The BCCI has categorically said that there will be no problems with procurement of visas. One of the main points for a host country is that all participating nations will be given visas on time. From ICC’s part, Bangladesh is not even in its scheme of things as a co-host as of now,” the source said.

“Suppose Pakistan reach the semi-finals or win to play the finals, do they expect the matches to be played in Bangladesh. This is not a theatre of absurd happening,” the board member added.

The top brass in BCCI circles understands that this is a pressure put by the PCB to host the entire Asia Cup in Pakistan, which isn’t being looked upon as a feasible solution.

“We understand that this is a kind of pressure tactic applied by PCB because of the Asia Cup issue. But let me tell you, ultimately, Asia Cup will also be played in UAE or Qatar and probably Pakistan will also have to play its matches in one of these countries,” a BCCI source said.

Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman and BCCI secretary Jay Shah has already made it clear that India is not travelling to Pakistan for the Asia Cup and that it will be held at a neutral venue.

“As far as Pakistan playing its Asia Cup games in Pakistan is concerned, the budget for the tournament is passed by the Asian Cricket Council. If ACC says that it’s not a commercially viable proposition to hold Asia Cup in two countries, how can Pakistan play its games at home. ACC, for all you know, might not pass the budget,” a board source said.

Anti-Encroachment Drive: J&K Admin likely to come up with formal order sparing poor, farmers

Srinagar, Jan 31: Jammu and Kashmir administration led by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha is likely to come up with a formal order in a week’s time ensuring protection for the poor and common masses during the ongoing anti-encroachment drive aimed at retrieving the land grabbed by the influential people in the past.

Sources in the LG administration, told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), senior BJP leaders of J&K unit of the party, have made personal requests about protecting the poor and common masses during the ongoing anti-encroachment drive going on across J&K.

“I met LG sahib in person and requested him to spare the people having grabbed or constructed homes on State land measuring 8 to 10 malras. I requested him to fix a nominal registration fee for them so that they are not rendered homeless,” BJP General Secretary and party’s Kashmir affairs incharge Sunil Sharma told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO).

He said that during his conversation with the LG it was decided that “influential won’t be spared and the land grabbed by them in the past will be retrieved at any cost.” “The LG told me that even though he has reiterated time and again that the poor won’t be touched and the influential won’t be spared, he would think on issuing a formal order in this regard,” he said.

Sharma said that he was hopeful that the LG administration may issue a formal order in this regard within a week’s time. “The order may have a mention about the registration fee for the poor having possession of State land up to 10 malras,” he said.

Another BJP leader, wishing not to be named, said that on behalf of the party, he too has urged the LG administration to spare the poor during the ongoing anti-encroachment drive. “Though it is up to the government to finalise whether they would keep 10 malras as the limit for having the State land for the poor lot who have constructed their homes or bring the number down to 5 malras or so. This is a matter of discussion and is being currently discussed by the Revenue officials and other officials of the LG led administration seriously,” the leader said, adding that “we expect a formal order shortly in this regard.”

J&K BJP spokesman Altaf Thakur said several delegations of farmers and poor people from Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir came to BJP office in Srinagar with a request that they have constructed homes on just 5,8 and 10 malars of State land and if they would be evicted, where would they go.

“We have requested the LG Sir not to touch the poor but go hard against the politicians especially all 34 former ministers whose names have surfaced in the list of land grabbers,” he said.

Congress party’s J&K unit too had vociferously opposed the eviction drive of the LG led administration and sought a formal order mentioning protection for the poor and farmers. Congress leader and MP Rahul Gandhi also expressed his displeasure over the J&K administration’s anti-eviction drive. In his press conference at Srinagar during Bharat Jodo Yatra (BJY), Rahul said that “poor are being left homeless and farmer’s land is being snatched during the eviction drive of the J&K administration.” In the J&K’s anti-encroachment drive, action has been taken against former ministers and officers. “The list of land grabbers is so long that it will take years to retrieve the land. The drive is on as per the directions from the LG office,” an official said, wishing not to be named—(KNO)

Hyderabad: Azmet Jah named as 9th Nizam at a formal ceremony at Chowmahalla Palace

Hyderabad: Mir Azmat Ali Khan Azmet Jah, the eldest son of the titular eighth Nizam Nawab Mir Barkat Ali Khan Walashan Mukarram Jah Bahadur was declared as the IX the head of the Asaf Jahi Dynasty. The crowning ceremony was held at the Coronation Hall in the Chowmahalla Palace on Saturday.

A declaration was issued by the office of Azmet Jah Bahadur. It stated, “In terms of the desire and the decree made by Nawab Mir Barkat Ali Khan Walashan Mukarram Jah Bahadur H.E.H the VIII Nizam of Hyderabad during his lifetime anointing his eldest son Mir Mohammed Azmat Ali Khan Azmet Jah as his successor in title and to accede his father as the IX th head of Asaf Jahi Dynasty for all symbolic, ceremonial, titular and ancillary purposes.”

It further added, “Following the customs and tradition of the Asaf Jahi Dynasty in existence for 299 years, a simple ceremony with prayers was held in the presence of The VIII Nizam of Hyderabad the family members, trustees, close friends, well-wishers and staff members to recognise and formalise the anointment.”

Mukarram Jah Bahadur, 89, passed away in Istanbul on January 14 and was buried at the Asaf Jahi mausoleum in Makkah Masjid’s compound in Hyderabad on January 18. His body was flown into the city in a chartered flight and kept for two days at the Chowmahalla Palace to allow the public to pay their last respects.

The Telangana government had announced a state funeral and among other persons, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had visited the Chowmahalla Palace and offered their last respects.
