New Delhi: Even as the evacuation process of Indian citizens from violence-hit Sudan is underway through Operation Kaveri, the government on Thursday said that is monitoring the situation.

Addressing media persons, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said: “We are constantly monitoring the situation in Sudan since the conflict began on April 15. Our estimate is that there are approximately 3,500 Indians and 1,000 PIOs in Sudan.”

He further informed that around 600 Indian citizens have already reached India.

“We have received requests for the evacuation of citizens of other countries from Sudan. This is subject to the fulfilment of the procedures,” he added.

Kwatra further informed that apart from INS Sumedha and INS Teg, the third naval ship INS Tarkash has also reached Port Sudan on Thursday to evacuate Indians from Khartoum.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for External Affairs V. Muraleedharan informed that 297 Indians have been received at Jeddah, who was carried by INS Teg.

“With this second ship and total of six batches, around 1,100 Indians have been rescued from Sudan and have arrived in Jeddah,” Muraleedharan tweeted.

POLITICO obtained a copy of the letter sent to House Intelligence Committee Chair Mike Turner (R-Ohio). Tim Parlatore, one of the letter’s signatories, told POLITICO that it was also sent to House Intel Democrats and to Republicans and Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee. The letter was first reported by CNN.

“Please know that despite the differences in the cases, we do not believe that any of these three matters should be handled by DOJ as a criminal case,” Trump’s lawyers wrote. “Rather, the stakeholders to these matters should set aside political differences and work together to remediate this issue and help to enhance our national security in the process.”

The letter said two of Trump’s lawyers, Parlatore and Jim Trusty, reviewed 15 boxes of documents that were taken to Mar-a-Lago after Trump left the White House and then later sent to the National Archives.

“Following its review of the materials, NARA inserted placeholder pages where it had removed documents with classification markings,” reads the letter, signed by Parlatore, Trusty, John Rowley and Lindsey Halligan. “That allowed Messrs. Parlatore and Trusty to discern what the documents were, as well as what other materials in the boxes were in the proximity of the marked documents when the White House staff packed them. The vast majority of the placeholder inserts refer to briefings for phone calls with foreign leaders that were located near the schedule for those calls.”

The appearance of documents marked classified at Mar-a-Lago, the lawyers continue, was “the result of haphazard records keeping and packing by White House staff and GSA.”

  • Ukraine’s foreign minister urges EU to speed up ammo deliveries

Ukraine’s foreign minister urges EU to speed up ammo deliveries

    [ad_1]

    the ap interview kuleba 43501

LUXEMBOURG — Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba on Monday implored EU foreign affairs ministers to move faster on their promises to supply Kyiv with ammunition. But his plea came as officials were given new details showing the EU still has a long way to go to meet its lofty pledges.

According to several diplomats, Kuleba — who addressed a meeting of foreign ministers in Luxembourg via video link — was critical of the slow pace of the EU in delivering ammunition and missiles as part of a plan to provide 1 million shells in the next 12 months as Ukraine fights off Russia’s invasion.

The plan has already been endorsed by EU leaders but, when it comes to the technical details, has only been partially agreed upon by member states, which are still discussing the so-called track two of the scheme, which involves the joint purchase of ammunition.

The bone of contention is a legal one about exemptions for companies based outside the EU in the supply chain of the defense companies involved in the plan, but in the background doubts also remain as to whether the EU defense industry can really deliver all of these shells.

Kuleba on Monday “repeated that Ukraine needs desperately the ammunition to stand against the Russian attacks, and also to organize the counterattack,” Margus Tsahkna, the foreign minister of Estonia, which put forward the ammo plan, told POLITICO. “And ammunition is crucial.”

The problem is not only the speed of the EU in delivering the ammo, but also the quantity. The plan is being funded by a pot of money called the European Peace Fund, which partially reimburses the member states for ammo and missiles. That cash, meant to help provide ammunition quickly, comes from the so-called track one of the plan — worth a total of €1 billion — which has already been fully agreed upon. EU top diplomat Josep Borrell, speaking to journalists Monday, said that “we have received requests for reimbursement for €600 million.”

Yet according to three diplomats, not all the material that member states want reimbursing for has actually been delivered. Of the €600 million that Borrell mentioned, €180 million was for the provision of 1,080 missiles (six of which have not yet been reported as delivered) and the rest of the money was for 41,000 pieces of ammunition, of which 28,000 have not been reported as delivered, the diplomats said.

Those numbers are well short of 1 million.

Kuleba stressed “that if there is one priority, and if it’s a single burning issue, this is weapons delivery, in particular ammunition … he also asked for not being hesitant on delivering the aircraft and other modern pieces of military technology,” Slovakia’s foreign minister, Rastislav Káčer, told POLITICO. “He was pushy, politely,” Káčer added.

Borrell tried to offer reassurance on the speed of the EU decision-making process, saying: “There has been some disagreement but the work continues. We are not waiting for the legal document to be finished to start working. The work continues and everything is being prepared,” he said at a press conference after the meeting.

Diplomats reckon it’s a matter of days, likely Wednesday, before track two of the plan will be finalized.

“The truth is that there is not satisfaction about how we’re delivering on track one, in the quantity and the speed,” Káčer said. “We can do more, we can scratch more. Slovakia is trying. We are putting everything we have in the stockpiles.”

Turkey greatly reduces defence industry’s foreign dependency: Erdogan

    [ad_1]

Ankara: Turkey has reduced its foreign dependency in the defence industry from around 80 per cent to some 20 per cent in the past two decades, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.

“The number of the defence projects, which was merely 62 in 2002, has today surpassed 750,” Erdogan said at the delivery ceremony of new Altay tanks to the Turkish Armed Forces for tests in the northwestern Sakarya province, Xinhua news agency reported.

Turkey has set a goal of an “independent defence industry”, he said.

The country’s budget for defence projects was $5.5 billion in 2002, now it has reached $75 billion, including the ones in the bidding process, the Turkish President explained.

BMC Defense delivered the main battle tank Altay for tests, which are expected to be completed in 2024.

  • Volkswagen becomes first foreign carmaker to qualify for electric vehicle credit

Volkswagen becomes first foreign carmaker to qualify for electric vehicle credit

    [ad_1]

Volkswagen officials had said on Monday that they expected the ID.4 to qualify for the full federal tax credit of $7,500 but that the company was still awaiting the proper documentation from its battery supplier to submit to the Treasury Department.

Treasury confirmed the eligibility on Wednesday, and the ID.4 was officially added to the list of qualifying vehicles on the government’s fueleconomy.gov site.

The ID.4 is built in a factory in Chattanooga, Tenn. Production began in October — two months after President Joe Biden’s climate law, the Inflation Reduction Act, added new domestic sourcing requirements to the EV tax credit.

All of the other 14 available EV models that qualify for the tax credit are from Tesla or one of the Detroit Big Three — Ford, GM or Stellantis. Some of those U.S.-made EVs are eligible for the full $7,500 credit, while others qualify for a half-credit of $3,750.

The IRA’s changes to the tax credit have rankled U.S. allies, especially in Europe, where government officials have objected to their auto brands being excluded from the tax incentive.

The initial list from Treasury also omitted vehicles from U.S.-based Rivian, which exclusively manufactures electric pickup trucks and SUVs. That company announced Wednesday that its 2023 R1T and R1S models comply with the tax credit’s criteria for critical minerals sourcing — but that most configurations of the vehicles fail to meet the government’s requirement that SUVs, pickups or vans cost $80,000 or less. (The limit is $55,000 for cars.)

Rivian said the tax credit might still be available, pending inclusion on the Treasury website, for buyers who previously locked in pricing below $80,000 but haven’t yet taken delivery. But those buyers would still have to meet the law’s income threshold, which cuts off buyers with adjusted gross incomes exceeding $150,000 to $300,000.

Jaishankar speaks to Saudi, UAE foreign ministers over Sudan situation

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has discussed the situation in violence-hit Sudan with his counterparts from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

India is closely watching the situation in Sudan, especially in view of its concerns over the Indians residing in the African country.

On his phone conversation with foreign minister of the UAE Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Jaishankar said they exchanged views on the situation in Sudan.

    MS Education Academy

“Thank HH @ABZayed, Foreign Minister of UAE, for the exchange of views on the situation in Sudan. Our continuing contacts are helpful,” the external affairs minister tweeted.

Sudan has been witnessing deadly fighting between the country’s army and a paramilitary group for the last six days that has reportedly left around 100 people dead.

Referring to his phone talks with Saudi foreign minister Faisal bin Farhan, Jaishankar said both sides will remain in close touch. “Appreciated his assessment of the Sudan situation. Will remain in close touch,” he said on Twitter.

On Monday, the Indian embassy in Sudan issued a fresh advisory urging Indians not to venture out of their residences and stay calm. The embassy on Sunday said that an Indian national died in Khartoum after sustaining bullet injuries.

The ministry of external affairs has already set up a 24X7 control room to provide information and assistance in view of the current situation in Sudan.

Sudan’s military captured power in a coup in October 2021 and it has been running the country through a sovereign council since then. There has been a dispute between the Army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) over a proposed timeline for handing over power to a civilian government.
