    Srinagar, March 7(GNS): Barring “very light rain and thunders at one or two places over the higher reaches”, the meteorological department here has forecast mainly dry weather for next 24 hours in Jammu and Kashmir.

    An official of the MeT department here told GNS that mainly dry weather was expected till March 12.

    Regarding the minimum temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 3.3°C against 3.5°C on the previous night and it was normal for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 2.0°C, same as on the previous night and it was 0.2°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of minus 1.4°C against minus 2.0°C on the previous night and it was normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of 3.9°C against 3.1°C on the previous night and it was 2.0°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

    Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 0.8°C against minus 1.6°C on the previous night and it was 2.7°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

    In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 0.4°C against 1.1°C on the previous night and it was 1.4°C above normal for the north Kashmir area.

    Jammu recorded a low of 12.9°C against 12.2°C on the previous night. It was 1.1°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

    Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 5.8°C (above normal by 2.8°C), Batote 7.5°C (above normal by 1.6°C), Katra 11.6°C (0.1°C above normal) and Bhadarwah 4.2°C (1.1°C above normal).

    Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil, the official said, recorded a low of minus 7.5°C and minus 4.6°C respectively. (GNS)

    Quoting an official from meteorological department, news agency  GNS  reported that in last 24 hours till 0830 hours, Srinagar received 5.7mm of rain, Qazigund 12.3mm, Pahalgam 18.1mm, Kupwara 8.7mm, Kokernag 8.8, Gulmarg 14.4mm, Jammu traces, Banihal 17.6mm, Batote 26.2mm and Bhaderwah 25.4mm.

  • MeT forecasts intermittent moderate snow, rain from today evening in J&K

    Srinagar, Feb 28: The weather department on Tuesday forecast intermittent light to moderate snowfall and rain in Jammu and Kashmir.

    “Intermittent light to moderate snowfall/rain (thunderstorm with rain in Jammu region) is expected at most places of J&K with main activity on February 28th(evening)- March 1st,” a meteorological department official here told GNS, adding, “Dry weather is expected during 3rd to 7th March.”

    He said that the weather system may affect surface transportation over major passes like Srinagar-Jammu highway, Sinthan Top, Sadna Top etc. during March 1-2nd.

    Regarding temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 4.0°C against 4.2°C on the previous night and it was above normal by 2.5°C for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 1.8°C against 1.5°C on the previous night and it was 1.4°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    While Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day long harsh winter period that started on December 21 and a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ that followed it have ended, Kashmir is under grip of 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which ends on March 1. (GNS)

    Quoting a meteorological department official news agency GNS reported that partly cloudy weather was expected on February 7-8. “Light to moderate snow/rain was expected at many places during February 9 (night) -11th,” the official said.

    Meanwhile amid cloud cover, the minimum temperature saw further increase except at a few places with Srinagar recording a low of 1.8°C against minus 0.4°C on the previous night. Today’s minimum temperature, he said, was above normal by 2.2°C for the summer capital.
