    Mercury Rises Amid Forecast For Cloudy To Dry Weather In J&K

    Srinagar, Mar 11: Amid forecast for partly cloudy to mainly dry weather, the minimum temperature recorded a slight rise in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday.

    A meteorological department official here told GNS that generally cloudy weather with light rain at isolated to scattered places was expected on March 13 and from 14th-17th, generally cloudy weather with dry weather was expected.

    “Afternoon thunderstorms at isolated places can’t be ruled out,” the official said, adding, “generally cloudy with intermittent light rain with thunder at scattered places during March 18-21st.”

    Regarding temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 3.4°C against 3.2°C on the previous night and it was 0.1°C above normal for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 2.4°C against 2.0°C on the previous night and it was 0.2°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of minus 0.4°C against minus 1.2°C on the previous night and it was 1.0°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of 5.3°C against 4.3°C on the previous night and it was 3.4°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

    Gulmarg recorded a low of 2.0°C against 0.6°C on the previous night and it was 5.5°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

    In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 1.2°C against 0.4°C on the previous night and it was 0.6°C below normal for the north Kashmir area.

    Jammu recorded a low of 15.5°C against 14.6°C on the previous night. It was 1.4°C above normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

    Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 4.3°C (above normal by 0.2°C), Batote 9.2°C (above normal by 3.3°C), Katra 13.7°C (2.2°C above normal) and Bhadarwah 6.6°C (3.5°C above normal).

    Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil, he said, recorded a low of minus 4.8°C and minus 16.7°C respectively. (GNS)

    “The weather is expected to be partly cloudy with possibility of intermittent light rain (light snow over higher reaches) at isolated places of Kashmir Division in next 24 hours,” a meteorological department official here said.

    He said mainly clear to partly cloudy with dry weather was expected from March 6 to 12.

    In last 24 hours till 0830 hours, he said, Srinagar recorded 0.6mm of rain, Qazigund 1.8mm, Pahalgam 16mm, Kokernag 4.4mm, Gulmarg 2.4mm, Bahihal 2.8mm, Batote 3.0mm, Bhaderwah 0.3mm while Gulmarg received 0.6cm snowfall.

    New Delhi: Rajasthan and large parts of western and central India are expected to witness thundershowers and hailstorms over the next few days in the run-up to Holi.

    The festival of colours will be celebrated across the country on March 7 and 8.

    The weather office has forecast thundershowers and hailstorms from Saturday till Wednesday due to two successive extra-tropical weather systems over the region.

    According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the western Himalayan Region is also likely to witness isolated to scattered rainfall or snowfall on Saturday and Sunday. It notified that Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat light to moderate thunderstorms from March 4 to 8.

    “The Western Disturbance as a trough in middle tropospheric westerlies runs roughly along Longitude 62 E to the north of Latitude 20 N and an induced circulation over north Gujarat in lower levels. A fresh feeble western disturbance as a trough in middle tropospheric westerlies likely to affect northwest, west and central India region from March 7,” the weather office said.

    It said isolated light or moderate thunderstorm activity is also likely over south Haryana on Saturday and over West Rajasthan till Sunday.

    Similar weather conditions are also likely to prevail over East Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Marathwada and Madhya Maharashtra till March 8.

    Strong surface winds with speeds between 20-30 kmph are very likely over the plains of northwest India during the next two days.

    Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 2.8°C (above normal by 0.6°C), Batote 6.5°C (above normal by 3.0°C), Katra 12.6°C (3.3°C above normal) and Bhadarwah 4.1°C (3.3°C above normal).

    Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 6.2°C and 4.8°C respectively, the official said.

    While Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day long harsh winter period that started on December 21 and a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ that followed it have ended, Kashmir is under grip of 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which ends on March 1.

    Gurez, Feb 25: The opening of the schools in Gurez area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district has been postponed till March 5 in view of fresh snowfall forecast.

    According to an order issued by sub-divisional magistrate Gurez, a copy of which lies with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the decision has been taken as a precautionary measure.

    “In light of the recent snowfall forecast and avalanche warning, and in the interest of safety and as a precautionary measure, the opening of school educational institutions, which was scheduled to begin on March 1, 2023, is hereby postponed until March 5, 2023,” read the order—(KNO)
