Better IRS service is forcing an earlier debt deadline

    [ad_1]

That means there is less uncertainty about how much money will come in — there isn’t a huge lump of tax payments still waiting to be tallied, like there was last year, when many didn’t get deposited until May or later. Most of the tax payments Treasury is going to receive have now already been collected, the Congressional Budget Office says.

“As a result, we anticipate that the IRS will process relatively few additional payments in May,” the nonpartisan agency says.

“That, in combination with the less-than-expected receipts through April, means that the Treasury’s extraordinary measures will be exhausted sooner than we previously projected.”

CBO and Treasury said Monday that they expect lawmakers to have to act by early June. In a letter to lawmakers, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the deadline could come as soon as June 1, though she said it’s also possible the deadline will end up being “a number of weeks later than these estimates.”

That has caught lawmakers off guard, with many expecting the deadline to land in late July.

President Joe Biden is slated to meet with congressional leaders next week. House Republicans have passed an increase tied to a host of budget cuts, something that is a nonstarter for Democrats. Lawmakers will likely have to pass a short-term extension to buy themselves more time to negotiate.

The deadline for action turns heavily on tax revenues, which are volatile. And a big reason for the new “X-date” is capital gains receipts, which have plummeted in the wake of last year’s downdraft on Wall Street.

But the timing of how quickly the IRS can turn around people’s returns matters too, and this was the first tax season since Democrats pushed through a one-time cash infusion for the agency that was six times its annual budget. As part of an overhaul of the agency, the administration is emphasizing improved customer service, in part by hiring thousands of new workers.

People who expect to receive tax refunds tend to file early because they want their money. There’s usually a lull in the middle of tax season before a rush at the very end that’s comprised disproportionately of people who owe (some tax veterans refer to the filing season as having “Batman ears”).

It’s not uncommon for wealthy people who owe to not only file very late in the tax season but also do it on paper, rather than electronically, because that takes the IRS longer to process, which means the taxpayers’ money can sit in an account longer collecting interest.

This time last year, when the agency was facing a queue of 5.2 million returns, the tax payments that came with them often wouldn’t get deposited in federal coffers for some time after Tax Day.

This year, through April 21, the IRS says it has processed 98.1 percent of the 134,649,000 returns it has received. That leaves 2.45 million awaiting action.

The total number of returns the IRS has received so far this year is down by 1.3 percent or about 1.8 million filings compared to last year.

That could partly be because the department gave people in California and other states hit by natural disasters until October to file. It’s unknown how many are taking advantage of that extension.

But there are lots of wealthy people in California, in particular, and there is a financial incentive for those who owe to delay paying as long as possible — which could be another reason why the debt deadline is coming faster than lawmakers anticipated.

‘Govt forcing police to deny hunger strike’, YSRTP to knock court doors

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: YSR Telangana party on Monday said that it would knock on court doors to get permission for Telangana Students’ Action for Vacancies and Employment’s (T-SAVE) day-long hunger strike at Indira Park, which was refused by the city police earlier.

Addressing the media after the political affairs committee meeting, YSRTP official spokesperson Gattu Ramachandra Rao said, “This is completely shocking and a sorry picture where YS Sharmila is repeatedly being targeted because chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao is now scared of her fight and commitment towards Telangana”.

The YSRTP spokesperson said that the CM KCR’s treatment of those who raised their voices against his failures and fake promises was atrocious and dictatorial. Rao claimed that the state government is forcing the Hyderabad police to refuse permission to a T-SAVE hunger strike.

He said that the party is tirelessly fighting for the cause and the rights of the unemployed. “Not only is the state government silent and arrogant, but they are also depriving us of our right to fight and protest,” alleged Rao.

He said that it is shameful that a democratic setup does not let the partymen enter their own party office.

“T-SAVE was proposed as a common platform and we had decided to conduct a hunger strike, for a day near Indira Park. This plea was rejected by the city police. Is this fair on KCR who owes his party’s emergence and existence to public movements and people’s protests?” he added.

“Didn’t KCR also conduct protests at Indira Park? Why different rules for Bharat Sashtra Samithi (BRS) and other parties?” added Ramachandra Rao.

He said that the YSRTP will approach the court to obtain permission to conduct the day-long hunger strike. “We have the support of 39 social organisations and other political parties as well. When BRS can carry out dharnas in Delhi, why does it pose obstacles for other parties in Telangana? Isn’t it because they are scared?” said the party spokesperson.

The hunger strike was announced at T-SAVE’s inaugural roundtable meeting on April 10. YSRTP leader Sharmila had announced that her party will stage a hunger strike for a day at Indira Park to “bring this government to task” and put pressure and force it to deliver justice to the youth.

  • Trump denounces ‘crime-fraud’ ruling forcing attorney to testify in documents probe

Trump denounces ‘crime-fraud’ ruling forcing attorney to testify in documents probe

    [ad_1]

    trump investigations judge 10912

The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals stayed Howell’s order temporarily on Tuesday night, ordering an extraordinarily rapid series of filings in a matter of hours — including one from Trump’s team by midnight Tuesday.

The appeals court’s order — from Judges Cornelia Pillard, J. Michelle Childs and Florence Pan, all Democratic appointees — doesn’t identify Corcoran or the case at issue but makes clear that the government was on the winning side of the case in Howell’s court.

The three-judge panel is asking Trump’s attorneys to specify the precise set of documents at issue by midnight and for Smith’s team to respond by 6 a.m. Wednesday to the Trump team’s demand for a longer stay of Howell’s ruling.

A spokesperson for Smith declined to comment Tuesday on the closed-door fight.

The appeals court order followed the filing by Trump-linked attorneys of a pair of appeals and stay requests tied to Howell’s decision, which came on the final day of her seven-year tenure as chief judge of the federal District Court in Washington.

The parallel submissions asked the appeals court to block Howell’s decision while the appeals go forward, docket entries show. The appeals were first reported by CNN. The short-term “administrative” stay granted Tuesday night does not appear to signal whether the appeals court will decide to keep Howell’s order on ice as full legal briefing proceeds in the dispute.

The Trump campaign statement issued Tuesday evening also dismissed Howell, a former Democratic Senate aide appointed by former President Barack Obama, as a “Never Trump” judge.

Howell’s secret order on Friday required Corcoran to testify about matters he and Trump had claimed were subject to attorney-client privilege. Her order relied on the “crime-fraud exception,” which permits investigators to pursue evidence that would ordinarily be privileged but contains evidence of likely criminal conduct.

As chief judge, Howell supervised all disputes arising from grand jury proceedings happening in Washington. That responsibility passed Friday to U.S. District Court Judge James Boasberg, who succeeded Howell as chief, but only after Howell issued the potentially momentous privilege ruling in the Trump-related legal fight.

The Trump camp’s public attack on Howell appears to be its first aimed at the veteran jurist, with Trump notably avoiding attacks against her while she single-handedly presided over the numerous grand jury disputes arising from investigations into the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol and into the classified documents.

Even after handing off the chief’s position, however, Howell continues to hold significant sway over matters connected to Trump’s inner circle. On Tuesday, she held a hearing in a lawsuit brought by two Georgia election workers against Rudy Giuliani, chiding the longtime Trump ally and his lawyer for what she described as an inadequate approach to required exchanges of evidence in the matter.

Proceedings related to the classified-documents grand jury, including efforts by prosecutors to compel Corcoran’s testimony, are occurring under seal — typical for nearly all grand jury proceedings.

However, the appeals court’s docket shows that the rulings being appealed were issued on Friday and correspond to a dispute that was filed with the District Court on Feb. 7. That’s just days before media reports emerged of an effort by Smith to force Corcoran to appear before a grand jury investigating the handling of classified records by Trump and his aides.

Just before noon Tuesday, the appeals court consolidated the two appeals without further public explanation. Of the three judges assigned to the dispute, Pillard is an Obama appointee, while Childs and Pan are appointees of President Joe Biden.

The grand jury probe of Trump, helmed by Smith, is an outgrowth of a monthslong battle between the National Archives and Trump to obtain hundreds of government records stashed at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida after leaving office. Trump’s aides returned 15 boxes of records in January 2022, including some that bore classification markings. As a result, the Archives brought in the Justice Department to pursue whether Trump had retained additional classified material.

In May 2022, the Justice Department subpoenaed Trump’s office, demanding the production of any other classified materials he might possess at Mar-a-Lago. Justice Department officials traveled in early June to Mar-a-Lago, where they briefly interacted with Trump and picked up a folder of records deemed classified. Trump’s team then certified that they had thoroughly searched the premises and turned over remaining classified documents.

But the department developed evidence suggesting that this wasn’t the case, leading to an Aug. 8, 2022, search of the property, where dozens of additional documents with classification markings were discovered.

Corcoran, who was Trump’s primary point of contact with the Archives and the Justice Department, has faced scrutiny for his involvement in efforts to certify that Trump had returned all potentially classified materials.

The legal maneuvering comes as Trump’s lawyers are also awaiting a potential indictment of their client in an unrelated case in New York, an investigation by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg into details of a hush money payment made in 2016 to the porn actress Stormy Daniels.

  • Why are energy companies forcing their way into people’s homes?

    [ad_1]

With energy bills soaring, many people are struggling to pay their bills – and those in the most difficult situations say they are having to skip meals to keep the heating on. But some people have found that their energy companies have taken drastic action if they fall behind on their payments – entering their homes to switch them to prepayment meters, or doing it remotely through their smart meters.

With prepayment often more expensive than paying energy bills monthly or quarterly, and companies using it to claw back debt, is this exacerbating the problems vulnerable customers face? Alex Lawson tells Hannah Moore that campaigners have found customers have been forced to “self-disconnect” – with 3 million unable to top up their pre-payment meters some point last year.

Will a fall in wholesale gas prices mean the situation improves – and what action are politicians taking to ease the problem?
