Uttarakhand: Paingadh village residents forced to take shelter in relief camps

Paingadh: Like subsidence-hit Joshimath, villagers of Paingadh village in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand have also been forced to leave their houses due to landslides and cracks appearing in their accommodations.

The hapless villagers are taking shelter in relief camps, tin sheds and even schools.

More than 40 families of the village, which is among the oldest settlements on the bank of the Pindar River near Tharali on the Karnaparayag-Almora National Highway, have become homeless and are living like refugees.

There are over 90 families in the village living there for generations.

The problem of landslides began in the village in 2013 with the Kedarnath disaster, but the matter worsened in October 2021 when cracks began to appear in fields above the village.

“The cracks were small initially and in a year’s time, they widened into holes,” Gopal Dutt, a villager, said.

On October 21 last year, a landslide occurred at around the same place where cracks had appeared and huge boulders fell on houses, killing four people.

The rubble of this landslide has affected almost half of the village and people who used to live in the zone have had to leave their homes and take shelter elsewhere, he said.

Some of the affected families have taken shelter in the houses of relatives, while others have shifted to a school building in the village. .

The only government primary school of the village has been turned into a relief camp, forcing authorities to hold the classes in the junior high school building about one kilometer away.

Children aged between 5-11 years have to walk to their school and also cross a stream on the way.

“There is no proposal yet to resume classes in the primary school building. Something definitive about it can be said only after the district administration makes a rehabilitation policy for the village,” Education Officer of Tharali block, Adarsh Kumar told PTI.

Meanwhile, Chamoli District Disaster Management Officer N K Joshi said a tin shed is being built in a secure location where the affected people of the village will be shifted.

However, a villager, Surendra Lal, alleged the shed is being built near a pine forest where there is no water or electricity supply.

One cannot go on foot to the place which can also pose a danger to lives during summer when pine leaves easily catch fire, Lal said.

Dutt said the government was requested to give readymade or prefabricated houses to the affected, but no progress has been made.

The affected families were given Rs 5,000 as disaster relief by the government four months ago.

“Geological scientists also conducted a survey of the village after the landslide, but no one knows what came out of it,” Surendra Lal said.

Jagmohan Singh Gadiya, who retired from the Army and lives in the landslide-affected zone, said, “I now regret my pledge not to migrate from my village”.

District Disaster Management officer Joshi said owners of the damaged houses have been given compensation as per norms. Relocation will be done in accordance with the rehabilitation policy and safe locations are being identified, he said.

  • Elon Musk reportedly forced Twitter algorithm to boost his tweets after Super Bowl flop

Elon Musk reportedly forced Twitter algorithm to boost his tweets after Super Bowl flop

    [ad_1]

Twitter chief executive Elon Musk rallied a team of roughly 80 engineers to reconfigure the platform’s algorithm so his tweets would be more widely viewed, tech news site Platformer has reported.

A disgruntled Musk called for an emergency effort after a tweet he sent during Sunday’s Super Bowl game failed to achieve as much engagement as a tweet from Joe Biden, interviews and internal documents reviewed by Platformer have revealed.

The effort was sparked when a tweet from the president, who has 37m followers, generated nearly 29m impressions while a similar tweet from Musk – who has 128m followers – generated little more than 9.1m impressions.

A Twitter employee and cousin of Elon Musk, James Musk, posted urgently in the company Slack at 2.30am the following Monday morning, asking all employees who can code to participate. “Any people who can make dashboards and write software please can you help solve this problem,” he wrote. “This is high urgency.”

Engineers then deployed a new algorithm that artificially inflated Musk’s tweets by a factor of 1,000, ensuring that more than 90% of Musk’s 128.9m followers see them. Many who do not follow Musk are also being served his tweets in their feed through the “For you” tab of the app’s home page, which curates tweets from a number of accounts, including those a user is not following.

Musk seemed to publicly confirm the move, in his own way, posting a meme about forcing followers to read his tweets. He also told followers to “stay tuned” while Twitter makes adjustments to the algorithm.

The decision to devote internal resources to promoting his own tweets comes amid ongoing reports about Musk’s obsession with his own impressions on the platform. Last week, a report from Platformer also revealed Musk had fired a principal engineer at Twitter who told him views on his tweets had decreased organically, with interest in the erratic CEO waning. Users have complained since Twitter made its “For you” page the default feed on the platform in January that Musk’s tweets were appearing more frequently.

Musk, who purchased Twitter in October 2022 for $44bn, has made a number of additional changes to the platform in the intervening months, allowing the return of previously banned accounts like that of Donald Trump, changing the process for Twitter verification, and revoking free access to the platform’s API, or application programming interface.

Amid ongoing criticisms of his decisions as chief executive, Musk has promised to step down and find a replacement as soon as later this year. Current employees have described a harrowing environment at the company, which laid off nearly half its workforce in November 2022. At the time, Musk defended the cuts and other cost-cutting measures, stating the company was losing $4m per day.

In a story that reflects the scale of the tragedy of those trapped under the rubble following the two devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, a Turkish teenager was forced to drink his own urine in order to stay alive.

17-year-old Adnan Muhammet Korkut was rescued from the rubble of a 5-storey building in Gaziantep, southern Turkey, on Thursday night, after 94 hours of being trapped under the rubble.

People who waited for Adnan to be rescued wept, clapped and chanted his name as he was pulled out of the rubble.

In a video clip, Korkut is heard telling rescuers that he reportedly drank his urine to stay alive and waited for them to rescue him.

“I drank my own urine to survive and I survived thanks to my God,” the teen told TRT World.

“I waited for you guys (rescuers) to come, and you came, Thank God. I thank all of you,” he added.

It is noteworthy that the two devastating earthquakes that struck southern Turkey and northern Syria with a magnitude of 7.7 and 7.6 has claimed nearly 35,000 lives so far, and displaced millions in Syria and Turkey, and hundreds of children have also been orphaned in the country.

Forced to study on mats in cold weather, students of Kathua school demand reading desks

    [ad_1]

Jammu: Forced to sit on mats in icy cold weather, students of a Kathua-based government school on Monday urged the Jammu and Kashmir administration to provide them reading desks and fix the broken windows of their school building.

The government primary school in Parnooh village in Banyari panchayat of Marheen tehsil have no desks for students. Broken window panes of the school building add to the woes of the students, who are forced to study out in the open under extreme cold conditions.

“We appeal to the administration to provide us reading desks as it is very difficult for us to study on mats in the cold weather condition here,” a student Khushi Kumari said.

The students said sitting on mats on the cold floor is unbearable.

A villager Sat Paul said the school building does not have window glasses and grills to prevent cold waves from entering classrooms, and appealed to authorities to take action in this regard.

Disney drops ‘Simpsons’ episode in Hong Kong that mentions forced labor in China

Disney has pulled an episode of “The Simpsons” that includes a line about “forced labor camps” in China from its streaming platform in Hong Kong.

The episode — first shown in October last year and titled “One Angry Lisa” — features a scene in which Marge Simpson takes a virtual exercise bike class with an instructor in front of a virtual background of the Great Wall of China. The instructor says: “Behold the wonders of China. Bitcoin mines, forced labor camps where children make smartphones, and romance.”

China’s use of forced labor and mass internment camps to control the Muslim Uyghur minority in the Xinjiang region culminated in a U.N. assessment that concluded Beijing’s actions may constitute crimes against humanity, although China rejects any claims of human rights violations in Xinjiang.

The “Simpsons” episode is no longer available on the Disney+ platform in Hong Kong, the Financial Times reported Monday, citing experts on censorship that claim Disney might have removed the episode out of concern for its business in mainland China.

This is the second time the platform has been accused of self-censorship in Hong Kong. In 2021, it reportedly dropped an episode of “The Simpsons” that made reference to Tiananmen Square, the scene of a brutal massacre of pro-democracy protesters in Beijing in 1989.

In response to a request for comment, the Hong Kong government told the FT a film censorship system introduced in 2021, which forbids films from endangering national security, “does not apply to streaming services.” A spokesperson for the government did not comment on whether it had asked Disney to remove the episode.

In recent years, Beijing has cracked down on Hong Kong’s freedoms, sparking mass protests and international criticism.

Disney could not be reached for comment.
