“When President Biden makes a final decision, he will inform the person selected and then announce it publicly,” a spokesperson for the National Security Council said when asked for comment. “That hasn’t happened yet.”

Brown’s reputation and command experience in both the Pacific and the Middle East made him the odds-on favorite to be Milley’s heir apparent dating back to the Trump administration. But his appointment seemed less of a sure thing in recent months, as the White House seriously considered Gen. David Berger, the Marine Corps commandant, for the top job.

He rose through the ranks as the sole Black pilot in classrooms filled with white men, an experience he spoke about in an emotional video after George Floyd’s death in the summer of 2020.

Those who know Brown say he has the right experience to keep the military focused on its top priority: China. Brown’s most recent command experience was in the Pacific, as chief of Pacific Air Forces.

Brown also commanded troops in the Middle East, as head of U.S. Air Forces Central Command, and was serving in Europe when Russia illegally annexed Crimea in 2014, as a director of operations for strategic deterrence and nuclear integration at U.S. Air Forces in Europe. He was confirmed unanimously by the Senate for his current role as Air Force chief of staff in August, 2020.

Brown would be the first Air Force officer to become Joint Chiefs chair since retired Gen. Richard Myers, who held the position until 2005, an almost 20-year drought.

If confirmed to the chairmanship, Brown would become the top military adviser to a commander in chief who’s balancing the China threat with the need to equip the Ukrainian military with munitions, drones, missiles and other high-end equipment. That mission is in a state of flux, as the U.S. and other Western allies pivot from sending their own stocks of weapons to replenishing their armaments back home — all while making sure Kyiv has enough weaponry to fight off Russia in the months ahead.

A video of cow vigilantes forcing a Muslim driver transporting cattle to wear a skull cap and bow before a cow, in the presence of police personnel surfaced on social media and stirred outrage and condemnation. The victim was also reportedly beaten up by the mob leading to injuries.

The incident reportedly happened in Maharashtra’s Latur and the victim was admitted to a hospital.

According to a report by the TOI, the Latur superintendent of police (SP), Somay Munde, has initiated action against two constables and three home guards, in whose presence a group of people were allegedly seen to be heckling and assaulting a driver transporting cattle in a video clip.

    MS Education Academy

Munde told TOI, “We have taken serious cognizance of the incident and attached the two constables seen in the video to the police headquarters and also initiated a departmental inquiry against them. The three home guards’ deployment has been cancelled.”

Afzal Qureshi, a local activist, has reportedly filed a police complaint asking that action be taken against the mob of persons witnessed assaulting the driver. The driver has also been charged with several provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Qureshi claimed, “The driver had loaded a total of 15 cattle into a mini-truck from a Patoda-based animal market and sent them to Ausa market on April 23. He had all the required legal documents for trading the animals. But before reaching the market, some people waylaid his vehicle. The police reached the spot. Despite the legal documents, an FIR was registered against the driver for cruelty to animals.”

According to the Latur SP, the victim panicked and his blood pressure shot up. “The police got him admitted to a hospital. Still, we will look into the complaint,” the report quoted him.

  • Air Force unit in document leaks case loses intel mission

Air Force unit in document leaks case loses intel mission

    [ad_1]

    leaked documents investigation 94985

The leaks have raised questions as to how a single airman could have removed so many documents without being detected, why there were not safety checks in place and how the documents could have lingered online undetected for months.

“How could this guardsman take this information and distribute it electronically for weeks, if not months, and nobody knew about it?” Democratic Sen. Jon Tester of Montana asked the Air Force leaders testifying before a Senate defense appropriations subcommittee.

These are questions the Air Force is asking, too. For top secret information across the military, there’s supposed to be accountable control officers who are responsible for recording active top secret documents and ensuring they have been either properly secured or disposed of, such as through a shredder or by burning them.

Pending further review, “The 102nd Intelligence Wing is not currently performing its assigned intelligence mission. The mission has been temporarily reassigned to other organizations within the Air Force,” the service said in a statement to The Associated Press.

In addition, the Air Force is conducting a service-wide review of how each command handles classified information, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. C.Q. Brown told members of subcommittee.

The Air Force’s own reviews are on top of a military-wide review directed on Monday by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. Austin has ordered that all military facilities that handle classified information report to him within 45 days on how they access, share, store and destroy the nation’s secrets following the leaks.

The leaked documents exposed to the world unvarnished secret assessments on the war in Ukraine, the capabilities and geopolitical interests of other nations and other national security issues.

Teixeira posted the highly classified material in a geopolitical chat room on Discord, a social media platform that started as a hangout for gamers.

“He had access to some aspects based on his job as a cyber administrator. He took advantage of that access,” Brown said.

  • Oh no, Joe: Biden confuses ‘All Blacks’ rugby team with ‘Black and Tan’ military force

Oh no, Joe: Biden confuses ‘All Blacks’ rugby team with ‘Black and Tan’ military force

    [ad_1]

    ireland biden 36318

DUBLIN — That didn’t last long.

Joe Biden managed to tread carefully around historic and current political sensitivities during the first part of his trip to the island of Ireland this week, marking 25 years since the U.S.-brokered Good Friday Agreement sought to secure lasting peace for Northern Ireland.

But not long after crossing from that U.K. region into the Republic of Ireland on Wednesday, the U.S. president made a major gaffe: He confused New Zealand’s “All Blacks” rugby team with the notorious “Black and Tans” British military unit that fought the Irish Republican Army a century ago.

At the end of a rambling speech in a pub Wednesday night, Biden — flanked by Irish Foreign Minister Micheál Martin and star rugby player Rob Kearney, a distant cousin — tried to pay a compliment to one of Kearney’s greatest sporting accomplishments. That would be when Ireland’s rugby team defeated New Zealand for the first time in 111 years, in November 2016 in Chicago. New Zealand’s squad is famously called the All Blacks, in reference to their uniforms.

Trouble is, Biden let slip a reference that could well reflect his affinity with Irish rebel history and its folk songs.

“He’s a hell of a rugby player, and he beat the hell out of the Black and Tans,” Biden said to audience laughter.

The Black and Tans were an auxiliary unit of Britain’s security forces that fought IRA rebels in their 1919-21 war of independence from Britain. Their name reflected the improvised and inconsistent colors of their uniforms.

The unrelentingly pro-Biden coverage on state broadcaster RTÉ, which televised his speech live, didn’t acknowledge the mistake. The commentator’s sign-off? “Well, that’s Joe Biden: a little bit sentimental, a little bit schmaltzy, but a thoroughly decent guy and a great friend to Ireland. The trip is off to a great start.”

But the gaffe and “Rob Kearney” blew up on social media in Ireland. Some listed the retired rugby fullback’s career accomplishments including, most famously, his single-handed defeat of the British forces a century ago.

“The greatest gift Ireland wanted from Joe Biden was a signature gaffe. And … didn’t he just go and give us one for the century,” tweeted comedian Oliver Callan.

Attempting to hose down the row on Thursday, Biden aide Amanda Sloat, the National Security Council senior director for Europe, said: “I think for everyone in Ireland who was a rugby fan it was incredibly clear that the president was talking about the All Blacks and Ireland’s defeat of the New Zealand team in 2016.”

She added: “It was clear what the president was referring to. It was certainly clear to his cousin sitting next to him who had played in that match.”

Lost in the shuffle was Biden’s other Kearney gaffe: He still hasn’t figured out how to say his name.

When introducing Kearney at the White House on St. Patrick’s Day, Biden called him Keer-ney. The Irish pronounce the name Kar-ney. Biden stuck with Keer-ney on Wednesday.

Kerala HC seeks police’s stand on Asianet plea claiming harassment by the force

    [ad_1]

Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Tuesday sought the stand of the police on a plea by prominent Malayalam news channel Asianet, which has alleged harassment by the force in connection with some anti-drug use news it had telecasted.

Justice N Nagaresh, after a preliminary hearing of the matter, directed the State police chief and other officials to inform the court about their stand regarding the allegations made in the petition of the channel.

The court also asked the news channel to file a separate affidavit regarding the harassment allegedly faced by it the police after it filed the petition last Friday.

    MS Education Academy

Asianet, in its plea, has alleged that the news organisation and its employees were being harassed for having launched a campaign against drug abuse in the state, particularly among children.

It has alleged that the police was “acting in accordance with their political masters” and its employees “are being harassed, ill-treated and humiliated” by the force despite the court’s earlier orders to provide protection to the channel’s offices.

In its plea, it has said that after noticing the alarming spike in drug use among children, it decided to conduct a study and research on the issue, following which it published an interview with a victim of drug abuse.

Thereafter, in November last year, it began a campaign, ‘Narcotics is a dirty business’, coinciding with the state government’s efforts to fight drug abuse in Kerala, the petition has claimed.

As part of its news series on the issue, “one of the earlier news stories regarding drug abuse by children was revisited using file shots,” it has said.

“Pursuant to the telecast of the series against the abuse of narcotic drugs, on March 3 a group of nearly 30 SFI activists violently and forcefully trespassed into the office and studio floor of the news channel’s Kochi regional office, shouting slogans, and intimidated the staff..,” it has further claimed.

A case was registered by police against identifiable SFI activists and some were arrested and released on bail, it has said.

Subsequently, Asianet had moved the High Court seeking protection against any violent attack, the petition has said.

The court had on March 8 directed the police to provide adequate protection to offices of Asianet.

Regarding the SFI’s trespassing into Asianet’s Kochi office, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had said in the State Assembly that the pro-left student wing had organised a protest march to the channel’s office against the making of an allegedly fake video using a minor girl.

The video content amounted to spreading the misapprehension that government schools in the state were in the grip of drugs, the CM had said.

  • UAE-Israel CEPA to come into force on April 1

UAE-Israel CEPA to come into force on April 1

    [ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: The UAE-Israel Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement(CEPA), which was signed on May 31, 2022, will come into effect on April 1, this year. This means that tariffs will be removed or reduced on more than 96 per cent of product lines, which covers 99 per cent of the current value of traded goods between the UAE and Israel.

The UAE-Israel CEPA is now the second of the UAE’s new foreign-trade deals to be ratified following the successful roll out of the UAE-India CEPA in May 2022.

In addition to the new tariff structures, the agreement with Israel removes unnecessary barriers to trade, improves market access for services suppliers, opens opportunities in government procurement, provides a platform for SMEs to expand internationally, establishes parameters for digital trade, protects intellectual property, and creates transparent trade remedy mechanisms.

The CEPA is designed to push UAE-Israel non-oil bilateral trade from the US$1.3 billion recorded in 2021 to US$10 billion by the end of the decade. In 2022, bilateral non-oil trade reached US$2.49 billion, a 90 percent increase on 2021’s total, with re-exports from Israel growing 71.2 percent and non-oil exports to Israel climbing 48.6 percent.

The full details of the new tariff structures, rules of origin eligibility, as well as information market access conditions for services suppliers, is now available on the Ministry of Economy’s website.

Businesses, exporters or agencies are invited to direct specific queries on the terms of the deal to a panel of expert CEPA advisors on e-mail at: CEPA@economy.ae

The UAE-Israel CEPA is a part of the UAE’s new trade agenda and efforts to double the size of economy from AED1.4 trillion to AED3 trillion by 2030. The UAE has now concluded CEPAs with India, Israel, Indonesia, Türkiye and Georgia.
