Raipur: Four persons were arrested on Thursday, a day after a rally was taken out in Chhattisgarh’s capital Raipur by a group of people allegedly in support of wanted pro-Khalistan preacher Amritpal Singh, an official said.
Based on the examination of CCTV footage and video clips of the statements given by people involved in the rally, a first information report (FIR) was registered at Civil Lines police station here, Raipur Senior Superintendent of Police Prasant Agrawal told PTI.
Four Raipur residents, identified as Diler Singh Randhawa (46), Manindarjeet Singh alias Mintu Sandhu (40), Harinder Singh Khalsa (44) and Harpreet Singh Randhawa alias Chintu (42), were arrested for allegedly taking out a foot march in support of Amritpal Singh, he said.
The four have been booked under Indian Penal Code sections 147 (punishment for rioting), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 505(1)(b) (with intent to cause, or which is likely to cause, fear or alarm to the public, or to any section of the public whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the State or against the public tranquillity), SSP Agrawal said, adding that further investigation is underway.
Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said in the state Assembly that he had ordered police to probe the issue and take action against those found indulging in anti-national activities.
On Wednesday, a rally was taken out allegedly in support of Amritpal Singh, after which police served notice to the organisers. They were asked to furnish their replies at Civil Lines police station.
Diler Singh Randhawa, a member of Baba Budha Saheb Committee, who was part of the rally, had told media persons that Amritpal Singh was innocent. He accused the Punjab government of falsely implicating him.
Diler Singh claimed Amritpal Singh was fighting against addiction and was uniting youth through religion.
However, a video of Diler Singh, which was shared by police on Thursday, showed him claiming he had been misreported and that some persons were spreading propaganda that the rally was taken out in support of Khalistan.
He said the rally was held against the “illegal” action being taken against Sikhs in Punjab.
“We live in Chhattisgarh and love the people of Chhattisgarh. We respect every religion. We don’t want Khalistan and have nothing to do with it. We only talk about Sikhism and we raise our voice for Sikhs. It is our responsibility and right to raise the issue of our community,” he added.
Police action began in Punjab last week against radical preacher Amritpal Singh, who heads Waaris Punjab De’ organisation, leading to several arrests, though he continues to remain elusive.

Mumbai: Maharashtra farmers continued their 175 km foot march to Mumbai for the second day on Tuesday even as the government said it would hold talks with a leaders’ delegation on Wednesday.
The farmers’ stir is spearheaded by the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) and comprises over 10,000 peasants walking in the blistering heat with banners, placards, posters and raising slogans en route.
En route, the marchers were enthusiastically welcomed in various villages by the locals, offered food and water, and people expressed their support for the cause as they walked past.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis were slated to meet the farmers’ leaders on Tuesday, but the meeting was put off owing to the strike launched by state government employees demanding a return to the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).
“We were informed that the meeting has been cancelled, but no reasons were given… Our march continues as usual,” AIKS Maharashtra General Secretary Dr Ajit Nawale told the media.
Slamming Shinde’s offer of giving an ex-gratia of Rs 300/quintal for onion growers, he said it was too meager and the amount should be hiked to at least Rs 600/quintal, failing which the agitation would intensify.
“Unless the government talks to us, we may be compelled to block the Mumbai-Gujarat Highway, only then they will listen,” Nawale said.
Leader of Opposition Ajit Pawar and other Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) leaders have raised the matter in the Assembly and have rooted for the distressed farmers’ cause.
Congress state President Nana Patole, NCP state President Jayant Patil, Shiv Sena-UBT leaders like Bhaskar Jadhav and others have demanded that the government should give between Rs 500-Rs 700/quintal to the farmers reeling under a crisis owing to fallen prices.

From the government side, Nashik Guardian Minister Dada Bhuse said that at the Wednesday meeting, the CM and Deputy CM as well as concerned department secretaries shall be present to discuss the issues and resolve the farmers’ problems.
He expressed confidence that all the positive demands would be heard out and the needful would be done for the farmers.
On Sunday, the AIKS released its 17-point charter of demands which includes compensation for onion growers and MSP of Rs 2000/quintal from the next season, better prices for other crops like cotton, soybean, tur, green gram, milk, and related issues of ASHA workers, etc.
This is the third “long march” by farmers in the past five years – the first one was in 2018, later in 2019, and again this year.
For the third time in five years, thousands of farmers are again on the road to Mumbai for their various demands that remain pending since long, braving the intense summer heat.
It has come after similar marches in 2018 and 2019 – and will traverse around 175 kms – attracting farmers from all over the state who converged in Nashik on Sunday.
What are their demands?
Among the demands are an immediate subsidy of Rs 600/quintal and MSP of Rs 2000/quintal from next season for onion growers, writing off of farmers’ loans, suitable remuneration for all agriculture produce, power bills waivers, quick compensation for crop losses due to unseasonal rains-hail, forest land rights, etc.
They sought regularisation of encroachers on forest lands up to four hectares with names in the 7/12 documents, waiver of power bills and making electricity available 12 hours daily for farmlands, clear the 7/12 of farmers by waiving off their entire agriculture loans.
They have also demanded NDRF amount of compensation for all crop damages due to unseasonal rains and other natural calamities that hit the agriculturists round the year, quick compensation and curb the “loot” by crop insurance companies, create an independent system for regular inspection of milk meters and weighing forks for milk and a minimum price of Rs 47 for cow milk and Rs 67 for buffalo milk and stop the conspiracy to slash prices of soybean, cotton, tur and grams, re-start selling grain along with free rations on ration cards every month.
Hyderabad: Telangana All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge Manikrao Thakre participated in the ‘Haath Se Haath Jodo’ poru yatra from Sirgapur to Nirmal on Saturday.
Speaking at the street corner meeting at Shivaji Chowk in Nirmal, Manikrao Thakre claimed that there has been a tremendous response to the ‘Haath Se Haath Jodo’ yatra across Telangana, adding the Congress party is all set to return to power.
He accused chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao of cheating people with false promises and fake claims.
“Congress cadre has been exposing the failures of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government in Telangana and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre by conducting the door-to-door campaign,” he said.
Addressing the meeting, senior Congress MP N Uttam Kumar Reddy criticized the BRS government for the rising rate of unemployment.
Reddy said, “More than 40 lakh youth remain jobless to this date. The BRS government is boasting about filling up a few thousand vacancies, but it is not addressing the remaining jobless youth.”
He said, “Exams were conducted for recruitment of 20,177 posts for Group-1, Group-2, Group-3 as well as police jobs. A whopping 22.01 lakh candidates applied and an average of 756 candidates competed for each available vacancy in Group-1. Similarly, the average number of candidates per post for Group-2 and Group-3 is 704 and 390 respectively.”
“If the government recruited 17,516 people for police recruitment, what should the remaining 7.30 lakh candidates do? They need alternate jobs, but the BRS government is not even providing an unemployment allowance of Rs 3,016 per month,” he said.
AICC programme implementation committee chairman Alleti Maheshwar Reddy alleged that CM KCR ‘hijacked’ the original dream of Telangana.
“He came to power by exploiting the sentiments of Telangana people but did nothing to achieve the goals of Neelu (water), Nidhulu (funds) and Niyamakalu (jobs). KCR gave up Telangana’s share of the Godavari and Krishna rivers to Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh,” Reddy said.
Maheshwar alleged that KCR pushed Telangana into huge debts of over Rs 5 lakh crore almost equal to two full annual budgets. “Further, over 40 lakh youth are still jobless in the State. They include thousands of youth who actively participated in the statehood movement,” he said.
He said that the state government is unable to pay salaries to the employees on time and no funds are left to be spent on welfare schemes.
“However, the assets of KCR and his family keep increasing and their party BRS became one of the richest parties in the country,” he alleged.
“KCR became the Chief Minister by exploiting the Telangana sentiments twice and now he disowned the state by forming the BRS to accomplish his dream of national politics. KCR is an opportunist and tomorrow he might even suggest a merger of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh if it suits his political goals,” he alleged.
He dubbed minister Indrakarana Reddy ‘Qabza Reddy’ and alleged that Indrakarana was more focused on land grabbing than serving the people. He said that the minister took no interest in resolving problems being faced by students at IIIT Basar.
He said, “The minister did not meet adivasis when they were sent to jail. Indrakaran Reddy failed to bring any development in Bhainsa despite being in the cabinet for the last eight years.”

JAMMU: Senior BJP leader Devender Singh Rana said the Congress has become the B-team of soft separatist, Kashmir centric and communal Peoples’ Alliance for Gupkar Delegation (PAGD) with Rahul Gandhi furthering its cause as a foot-soldier.
“The Congress does not seem to have learned any lesson from its repeated follies as the fourth generation Nehru-Gandhi scion is now hobnobbing with soft-separatists, known for their divisive, communal and separatist politics ,” Rana said while interacting with delegations that called on him here this afternoon.
He held the Congress responsible for decades long mess in Jammu and Kashmir, saying the party and its new found allies are destined to fail, as the BJP is committed to clear the mess and put Jammu and Kashmir on the path of political stability and prosperity.
Devender Rana said the beginning of undoing the wrongs commenced on August 5, 2019 when Parliament repealed the Article 370, granting special status to this part of the country, and making it integral with the nation emotionally and in totality. He said the onus now lies on the Congress to clear its stand on this historic milestone, especially in the wake of its alliance with the PAGD, which has made known its opposition to total integration of J&K with the Dominium of India.
Devender Rana said, as if the follies and erroneous political moves of Jawaharlal Nehru in respect of Jammu and Kashmir were not enough, Rahul Gandhi has embarked upon the ‘Mission Break India’ under the garb of “Bharat Jodo Yatra” , which is reflected by his controversial alliances with elements inimical to peace and tranquility. By joining hands with the PAGD, the Congress has allowed itself to get consumed by their politics of deceit and deception, he added.
“It is because of the policy paralysis and wrong decision from time to time that the Congress is on the verge of its extinction in the entire country,” Devender Rana said, adding that the plight of the so-called grand old party is that it is losing its ground in the length and breadth of the country.
Rana said the people of Jammu and Kashmir can see through the political opportunism of the trio—the Congress, the NC and the PDP, who are desperate to grab power by hook and crook. The trauma with the three parties is that they are no more relevant in the political arena of Jammu and Kashmir, given their trail of misgovernance and anti-people policies. On the contrary, the BJP has created a niche for itself due to path breaking initiatives taken for welfare of the people and progress of the both regions of Kashmir and Jammu. He said the Union Territory is close to the heart of the Prime Minister, who has a vision for Naya J&K, where opportunities of progress are available to all, irrespective of region or religion, and without any discrimination or appeasement.
Rana referred to the initiatives taken for holistic development being undertaken across Jammu and Kashmir with focus on investments for growth and job generation. He said the time is not far when the gains of investment will be discernible in terms of infrastructural development and avenues of jobs to professionals, educated unemployed besides skilled and unskilled workforce.
