  • As delivery staff stress levels reach worrying highs, food delivery apps start acting

As delivery staff stress levels reach worrying highs, food delivery apps start acting

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Ajay (name changed), working as a delivery boy of a popular online-delivery platform, was rushing to deliver his order, but got stuck in peak-hour traffic and thus was late to deliver his order. He called up the customer to inform his situation.

Instead of being empathic, the customer called up his company to complain. Soon enough Ajay lost his job.

Hamid (name changed) accidentally pressed the doorbell of a house, he was abused. The list is endless.

In the world of instant delivery, every other day we hear stories where delivery boys are beaten, abused or assaulted. Often they have to traverse in the harsh sun, wind and rain; face longer hours of work and traffic snarls.

“There has been a consistent growth in consumer confidence for ordering online, steered by tech-led delivery networks. This, in turn, has unlocked the long-term potential of ready-to-eat food delivery,” Prabhu Ram, Head, Industry Intelligence Group, CMR, told IANS.

“For food delivery startups seeking to attain sustainable and long-term market leadership, this market opportunity requires them to deliver not just on the instantaneous consumer delight, but rather the employee experience as well,” he added.

Owing to their tough workstyle, delivery boys often face a lot of stress, which can affect their mental health.

“Uncertainties of day to day life, life risks, long time periods, financial stress. It certainly impacts mental health. As a result they may engage in unhealthy coping mechanisms like consuming substances or other desperate measures to manage stress,” Mimansa Singh Tanwar, Clinical Psychologist, at Fortis Hospital, told IANS.

“To maintain positive mental health for them, it is important to improve the manager employee relationship where they practise values of empathy, integrity, gratitude and positive encouragement towards them,” she added.

Tanwar suggested that the delivery boys should be incorporated in the employee wellness programmes, and since there is also a connection between money and mental health, financial aids should also be there to support them.

Delivery boys should “focus on what they can control and engage in healthy stress mechanisms like building good support systems through positive family and peer relationships, and avoid engaging in unhealthy consumption of substances,” she noted.

In the movie ‘Zwigato’, helmed by Nandita Das, ace comedian and actor Kapil Sharma plays the role of a delivery boy, and showcases their struggles. Kapil shared that the character made him realise how tough life is for delivery boys, and that he has become more empathetic towards them.

“This movie made me realise the challenges that delivery boys face on a daily basis, and I have learned to appreciate their hard work and dedication even more. I am not saying tip them, but I am just saying that we can at least say a thank you with respect and that will make them happy,” Kapil said.

Meanwhile, several food companies have started several initiatives for its workers. Food delivery platform Zomato recently launched ‘the Shelter Project’ under which the company has set up public resting points where delivery persons can take a break from their exhausting routine and use amenities like the washroom, internet, and phone-charging stations.

In August 2020, Zomato also introduced period leaves of 10 days in a year for its women employees (including transgender people).

Swiggy has rolled out ambulance service for delivery executives and their dependents in the case of emergencies.

Consumption of food items wrapped in printed paper harmful

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Along with the use of plastic, it is becoming imperative to raise awareness among the public against the use of waste papers that have been published with ink, as this is one of the main reasons for the increase in the number of patients with liver and gastrointestinal diseases.

If you consume items packed in ink paper, you are setting yourself up for liver damage as the substance in ink contributes to liver and stomach damage. The ink contained in the waste newspapers and books, which are often used for packaging fried and other edible items, is extremely harmful to human health and gradually weakens the human body and damages the immune system.

Fried items such as mirchi, bhajiye, etc. which are usually packed in the waste of newspapers or books, the oil released by these items and the ink on the paper can cause the effect of the ink to be absorbed into the food item. Due to this, the ink enters the human body through food. Very dangerous chemicals are used in the production of ink and if you smell this chemical mixer, you will probably feel difficulty in breathing.

According to the officials of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India FSSAI, selling food items wrapped in newspaper or book waste is extremely unhealthy and consumption of food items packed in this published paper is extremely dangerous.

There is a need to create awareness among the public and apart from this corner shops, carts, and hotels involved in such activities in the city should also be made aware of these causes. It is said that the constant consumption of food items wrapped in newspapers or the printed paper is likely to cause many stomach diseases and digestive problems and can lead to ulcers and other serious diseases.

Medical experts say that such irresponsible packaging of food items should be avoided whenever these items are bought outside.

ED raid was over in 30 minutes, served them food: Tejashwi

    [ad_1]

Patna: Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav on Monday claimed that the ED raid on his house in Delhi’s New Friends Colony lasted only 30 minutes and the team found nothing while he and his family members had treated the officials hospitably, serving tea and meals to them.

“We have not left any scope to offer hospitality to ED officials. We have served tea, breakfast, and lunch,” Tejashwi Yadav said after returning to Patna.

“When ED officials came to my house for a raid, they completed the search operation in half an hour. When we asked them to go from my house as the search was over, they said that they have orders from top bosses to stay in the house for a longer period of time so that news about the raids would run for the day,” he claimed.

Tejashwi Yadav also claimed that the ED team, which claimed to have seized a large amount of cash and gold, had found nothing and dared them to release a list of their seizures.

“All BJP people are fake and we are original socialist leaders. We would not get scared of their lies. The BJP leaders are becoming uncomfortable after the rally in Purnea. They want to divert attention from it but they will fail in their efforts,” he said.

“In 2017, they were talking about Rs 8,000 crore. Now they are talking about Rs 600 crore. I want to ask them to give the details of Rs 8,000 crore first.. where did the Rs 8,000 crore go. They do not have any proof. They only have fictitious stories. BJP leaders are feeling uneasiness ever since we have thrown them out of power in Bihar,” he added.

  • Republicans launch opening salvo against food aid

Supporters say enhancing work requirements as outlined in Johnson’s proposal is key to reducing cycles of perpetual poverty, and it will also save taxpayers money.

“We know that work is the only path out of poverty,” said Johnson, a member of the House Agriculture Committee whose family received SNAP benefits when he was a child growing up in Pierre, South Dakota.

Johnson hopes his proposal will be folded into the upcoming farm bill, which lawmakers will draft later this year, but it will face stiff resistance in the Democrat-controlled Senate. Other GOP lawmakers are now pressing for similar work requirements to be part of any deal on the debt limit between the White House and the House GOP. Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) reintroduced a bill in January that would raise the age for food assistance work requirements by a decade to 59.

Democrats, however, note the majority of people who receive SNAP benefits are already working and, at the moment, are grappling with surging food prices, a challenge exacerbated by the end of a pandemic-era increase in aid.

“These guys talk about states’ rights all the time, except when it comes to poor people,” said Rep. Jim McGovern, one of the biggest anti-hunger advocates in the House.

Rep. Rosa DeLauro (Conn.), the top Democrat on the House Appropriations committee who’s had a series of budget talks with her Republican counterparts, noted this is a perennial fight.

“This is not something new, this go round. All you have to do is look back over the years,” DeLauro said. She added many House Republicans, who are currently eyeing broad cuts across anti-hunger programs and other social spending, would “decimate” food assistance programs if given the chance.

But even though they know what’s coming, some House Democrats are quietly raising alarms about their lack of plans to push back on the GOP proposals, which are likely to come up during negotiations over the debt limit, federal budget and farm bill.

“We need to be prepared for a showdown on food security — and right now, we’re not ready,” said one House Democrat, who was granted anonymity in order to speak plainly about internal caucus matters.

As POLITICO first reported last year, some Democrats have been particularly concerned about the leadership atop the House Agriculture Committee, which oversees SNAP and other federal food assistance programs. A handful of Democrats have pressed their leaders multiple times to remove top committee Democrat David Scott (D-Ga.) from his post, citing Scott’s health and concerns about his ability to effectively lead the committee. A steady churn of committee staff turnover under Scott has added to Democrats’ worries about their ability to effectively push back on Republicans. So far, leadership has rebuffed their efforts.

According to conversations with more than a dozen committee members and Hill aides, many believe Scott isn’t planning to run for reelection, and could even step down in the middle of his current term. They note he recently quit the Blue Dogs coalition and also has stopped attending key subcommittee hearings and farm bill listening sessions in various states — a major part of his role as ranking member as the two parties lay out their priorities for the legislation.

Asked last week about Republicans’ desire to cut food assistance, Scott declined to weigh in.

In a committee hearing the following day, Scott praised the “vital role” SNAP plays in feeding the nation. But then he made a procedural move that allowed House Agriculture Chair G.T. Thompson (R-Pa.) to approve the committee’s budget guidance letter, which endorsed a review of “strong pathways to employment” and “robust and effective integrity measures within farm bill nutrition programs.”

It was McGovern who spoke up during the hearing to express concerns. “Some of us will submit additional views regarding SNAP,” the Massachusetts Democrat told the chair. “And we will follow up with you in a timely fashion.”

The White House has largely stayed out of the brewing fight on food assistance amid the GOP calls for stronger work requirements and funding cuts — to some Democrats’ disappointment. But a paragraph tucked in the president’s budget released last week does call for “eliminating barriers to food assistance for vulnerable groups,” including time limits on SNAP eligibility. That proposal isn’t likely to gain any traction in the GOP-majority House, especially with Thompson at the Agriculture Committee helm.

The Pennsylvania Republican has been trying to carefully navigate the fraught politics around food assistance.

In an interview, Thompson said the current work requirements are “sufficient.” He’s also encouraged his colleagues to keep food assistance out of the debt limit fight. But given his experience as the former chair of the nutrition subcommittee, Democrats worry he could succeed in pushing through a series of smaller technical reforms to SNAP that would have broad implications, like pulling back flexibility around work requirements that has been allowed in recent years. The topic has come up in recent meetings of GOP committee members, according to lawmakers.

“G.T. Thompson made us all pretty much aware of the fact right off the bat that there are already work requirements in current law requiring work for able-bodied single people,” noted Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Texas), who sits on the House Agriculture Committee and is also a member of the Freedom Caucus. “The issue is that certain governors in certain states, there’s some loopholes in the rule where they can waive those. So I am interested in closing those loopholes.”

On the other flank of the party, the fight over federal anti-hunger programs could end up squeezing vulnerable members who represent districts Biden won in 2022.

That’s especially true of House Republicans like Marc Molinaro in New York, where state officials regularly ask the federal government to waive SNAP work requirements for able-bodied adults without dependents. Molinaro, who received food assistance growing up, says he knows first-hand the benefits and the inefficiencies of the programs.

“Confronting that in a way that’s sensitive to the individual is really important,” he said, declining, for now, to say whether he’d support steps to expand work requirements for that aid.

Hyderabad: A pleasurable visit to a popular fast food joint ended up as a nightmare for a Hyderabad kid after a big-sized rat clambered up his shorts and bit him.

The incident caught on the closed circuit camera of the fastfood major’s outlet in the Kompally area of Hyderabad has gone viral on social media.

In the video, the 8-year old boy, accompanied by his parents, can be seen having a snack when a large rat scampers out of the restaurant washroom into the dining area. When it climbs up the boy’s shorts, his father jumps to the rescue and plucks the rat from the child’s shorts and tosses it away.

The child was immediately rushed to a local hospital where he was treated for two rat bites on his left leg.

The boy’s father, an army officer, filed a complaint a day after the incident on March 9.

Sisodia given basic items, food as per jail manual: Officials

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Excise scam case accused and former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia is lodged in a Tihar prison cell for senior citizens and like any other inmate, has been given basic items and is being served food as per the prison manual, officials said on Tuesday.

The senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader was brought to the prison here on Monday, shortly after a CBI court remanded him to 14-day judicial custody till March 20 in the case.

A source said Sisodia brought a copy of the Bhagavad Gita along with him. Other items allowed by the court are yet to be received from his home. Sisodia also received some extra clothes on Tuesday, the source added.

On Monday night, he was given basic items such as blankets, soap and oral hygiene products, and for dinner, was served rice, chappati, dal, among others, according to the jail manual, an official said.

Every prison has a library and every inmate is its member. If anyone wants to have a book, they can avail it from there, the officials said.

Before being sent to his cell, he underwent a medical examination, they said.

The court has allowed Sisodia to carry the Bhagavad Gita, a pair of spectacles and medicines to jail and directed the Tihar authorities to consider his request to be allowed to do Vipassana meditation.

The CBI arrested Sisodia last week in connection with alleged corruption in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi liquor policy for 2021-22.
