    In 33 Days, 3.7 Lakh Visitors Throng Tulip Garden

    SRINAGAR: Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip garden, located on the foothills of Zabarwan mountain range, turned out to be a major tourist attraction in Kashmir this year with over 3.7 lac visitors from far and wide thronging the garden to enjoy the diverse hues of nature at display.

    The Tulip garden spanning over an area of 30 hectares (74 acres) has on a year-to-year basis pulled record number of visitors from all across be it the local, the national or the foreigners.

    The figures suggest that a total of 377201 tourists of which 315266 included domestic, 3259 foreigners and 58676 locals visited the garden over a period of 33 days – after thrown open to visitors on March 19,2023 upto April 20, 2023.

    As per an official, the footfall this season was the highest ever. “We had 3.6 lakh tourists visiting the garden last year and this year it saw an increase making it the highest ever footfall in the history of this garden”, the official told GNS adding the period of tulip bloom this season lasted for 33 days, as compared to last year’s 27 day period, largely due to  mild weather conditions.

    “There were 68 varieties of tulips on display in the garden this season, out of these varieties, four new ones were introduced this year: Hamilton, Sweetheart, Cafe Noir and Christmas Dream”, the official said.

    Expressing his satisfaction over the record number of visitors, the official further said the enormous flow of Tourists from within and outside the country motivates us and imbues in us courage to do more to make the visit to the garden a memorable experience.

  • Tulip Garden To Be Closed For General  Public From April 21: Dir Floriculture

    SRINAGAR: As the tulip bloom is almost over, authorities have decided to close the garden for the general public from Friday.

    Director Floriculture Kashmir in a statement said that the Tulip garden shall remain closed for general public from Friday.

    “As the Tulip Bloom is almost over, the Tulip Garden, Srinagar shall remain closed for general public w. e. f  21.04.2023, ” it said.

    A record 3.65 lakh tourists including locals had visited the garden since its opening on March 19.

  • ACB Traps Gardner of Floriculture Deptt in Srinagar

    Srinagar, Apr 04: Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday claimed to have trapped a Gardner of Floriculture department while demanding and accepting bribe in summer capital Srinagar.

    An official told news agency Kashmir Dot Com that on receipt of the complaint, an FIR was registered, under section 7 Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 in Police Station ACB central Kashmir and investigation was taken up.

    Accordingly a trap team was constituted. The trap team laid a successful trap and caught a Gardner of floriculture department at Badamwari while accepting a bribe of rupees 2,000 on the spot in presence of independent witnesses, he said.

    The Gardner was taken to a police station in Srinagar and further investigation into the matter is going on. (KDC)

    Srinagar, Mar 15 (GNS): The Department of Floriculture, under the Government of Jammu and Kashmir, kickstarted a mega Chinar plantation at Nishat Garden here on Wednesday.

    The Director Floriculture Farooq Ahmad Rather who is overseeing the drive spoke to the gathered crowd about the importance of preserving the heritage Chinar trees, with an utmost sense of purpose and determination.

    The Director, Farooq Ahamad Rather talking to GNS said that every year on March 15, the Department of Floriculture Gardens and Parks Directorate of Floriculture Kashmir and other prominent associations organize a Chinar plantation drive with the main aim of making people aware of the heritage Chinar tree.

    “As we know, Chinar is a royal and heritage tree and a part of our ancestry. To prevent its depletion, it is an effort from the government to plant more Chinars in an adequate number every year. This year, we are also distributing more than 10 thousand Chinar saplings to different government offices, schools, colleges, civil services, defense and other departments. On this day, we also spread awareness among all and request people to play their role in Chinar conservation.”

    Regarding Nishat Garden, the Director said that it is a pleasant Chinar avenue and consists of more than 200 big Chinar trees, which are the main attraction for visitors during the autumn season. “This year, we are planting 60 more saplings here in the Garden, which will augment the number and make it more beautiful.”

    Talking about the felling of Chinar trees, Rather said that cutting the (Chinar) tree has a process and the permission for the same is issued by the District Magistrate and the Department of Floriculture only gives an opinion. “If a Chinar tree has become dry and is about to fall, in this extreme condition, this tree is cut down with proper permission to save lives and property from getting damaged.” (GNS)

    SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Government has approved a mega Rs 39-crore project with an avowed objective of exploring the huge floriculture potential keeping in view the varied agro-climate and ecological conditions in the Union Territory for giving boost to flower production.

    “The project is expected to provide direct employment to 2000 besides creation of 330 new enterprises”, Atal Dulloo, Additional Chief Secretary, Agriculture Production Department said.

    He said Jammu and Kashmir has long been known for its rich and diverse agri-ecozones, making it an ideal location for growth of a thriving floriculture industry. Abundantly endowed with natural wealth and scenic splendor, the UT is completely conducive for cultivation of a wide range of flowers. The aesthetic value of flowers, their increasing use in the social events and potential of generating more money are attracting prospective entrepreneurs towards floriculture industry.

    Splendid gardens and parks in J&K are being enjoyed by the tourists from across the globe.

    However, despite this potential, the sector has not been able to make a significant contribution to the horticulture economy in the region so far. The main reasons for this are the small number of growers and enterprises, lack of aggregation platforms and weak post-harvest and branding efforts. And, to fill up these gaps the J&K government recently approved this ambitious project to boost commercial floriculture in the region.

    aromatic flower and bulb/seed production. It also aims to produce over 27 crore ornamental nursery plants and 4000 L of aromatic oils worth Rs 4.8 crore annually (from 5th year) and undertake skilling of 4000 growers in cluster mode. The total outlay of the project is Rs. 39.03 crore.

    Overall, the new project represents a major step forward for the floriculture industry in J&K. With a focus on cluster-based area expansion, technology upgrades, post-harvest and marketing efforts, the project has the potential to help establish a sustainable and profitable floriculture industry in the region. It is hoped that this project will help to create new opportunities for growers and entrepreneurs, and will contribute to the overall economic development of J&K.

    “Promotion of Commercial Floriculture in UT of J&K” is one among the 29 projects, which were approved by the Jammu and Kashmir administration after being recommended by the UT Level Apex Committee for holistic development of Agriculture and allied sectors in UT of J&K. The prestigious committee is being headed by Dr Mangala Rai, Former DG ICAR and has other luminaries in the field of Agriculture, Planning, Statistics & Administration like Ashok Dalwai, CEO NRAA, Dr. P. K Joshi, Secretary, NAAS, Dr. Prabhat Kumar, Horticulture Commissioner MOA & FW, Dr. H. S Gupta, Former Director, IARI, Atal Dulloo, Additional Chief Secretary, Agriculture Production Department apart from the Vice Chancellors of the twin Agriculture Universities of the UT.
