Biden pushing airlines to go beyond refunds for delayed or canceled flights

The White House said the expanded website will show that only one airline guarantees frequent flyer miles, and that two airlines guarantee travel credits or vouchers as compensation if passengers experience significant delays or cancelations that are caused by something within the airline’s control such as a mechanical issue. Zero airlines guarantee cash compensation for preventable delays and cancellations.

Biden and Buttigieg will officially announce the new effort at an appearance at the White House on Monday. The White House noted that three airlines, Alaska Airlines, Frontier Airlines and American Airlines, announced commitments to provide fee-free family seating after Biden included family seating fees as part of his attack on “junk fees” in this year’s State of the Union.

“When an airline causes a flight cancellation or delay, passengers should not foot the bill,” Buttigieg said in a statement. “This rule would, for the first time in U.S. history, propose to require airlines to compensate passengers and cover expenses such as meals, hotels, and rebooking in cases where the airline has caused a cancellation or significant delay.”

Background: The announcement is another push by the White House to get ahead of a summer travel season that is predicted to exceed pre-pandemic travel levels in 2019.

Late last year, Southwest Airlines’ holiday meltdown stranded tens of thousands of passengers and prompted calls from Buttigieg and lawmakers to make travelers whole. Southwest responded by doling out rewards points and spending millions on hotels and other expenses for passengers who were stranded for days, though Senate Commerce Chair Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) is pushing the airline to make public how many customers applied for reimbursements for ancillary expenses but were rejected.

Federal law does not require airlines to compensate passengers for flight delays. If a flight is canceled, a passenger can choose to receive a refund.

  • Centre denied request for flights to evacuate Mizoram residents from Manipur: Official

Centre denied request for flights to evacuate Mizoram residents from Manipur: Official

    [ad_1]

Aizawl: A senior Mizoram official on Saturday claimed that the Centre has turned down the state’s request to provide flights to evacuate its residents stranded in violence-hit Manipur.

The Mizoram government has urged both the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Civil Aviation to charter flights for the stranded people hailing from the northeastern state, he said.

“The Centre turned down our request, and so has a private airline (to evacuate people of Mizoram stuck in Manipur),” the official told PTI.

    MS Education Academy

The Centre is yet to make a comment on it.

Hundreds of people, mostly students, were reportedly stranded in Manipur following violent clashes between tribals and people belonging to the majority Meitei community, which has displaced thousands and resulted in the loss of lives of at least 54.

Meanwhile, Mizoram Home Minister Lalchamliana convened a meeting with officials on Saturday to review the measures being taken to evacuate people from Manipur.

He said the state government is making massive efforts to bring back its residents at the earliest.

Tickets of commercial flights have been booked for those stranded in the neighbouring state, and they are expected to return in batches, state government sources said.

Abu Dhabi: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) carriers Etihad Airways and Emirates Airline have come together to bring a first-of-a-kind interline agreement.

On Thursday, UAE Airlines signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that expands their interline agreement, which took place at the Arabian Travel Market, with representatives from both airlines present.

Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), passengers traveling to the country will have the option of arriving in one Emirate and departing from the other. There will be no additional airfare for the service.

In its announcement Emirates, which is based in Dubai, said, “This first of its kind agreement between the two UAE carriers aims to capitalise on opportunities to boost tourism to the UAE from key source markets by enabling visitors to experience more than one destination in a single itinerary.”

Etihad Airways CEO Antonoaldo Neves added, “Our interline agreement will make it more convenient for our guests to experience the best of Abu Dhabi and Dubai on one ticket while promising to deliver an exceptional flying experience whether they fly with Etihad Airways or Emirates. Go First cancels all flights on May 3-4 amid financial crunch

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: In a major blow to its passengers, low-cost airline Go First has announced that all its flights will remain cancelled on May 3-4. The decision was communicated to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) by the airlines and as per sources, a detailed report will be submitted soon to the civil aviation regulator.

Adding to the uncertainty, the Mumbai-based airline has also stopped taking bookings for the next two days.

The move came after Go First, which has around 5,000 employees, filed an application for voluntary insolvency resolution proceedings before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), as confirmed by its CEO Kaushik Khona.

    MS Education Academy

The airline is currently facing financial difficulties due to non-supply of engines by Pratt & Whitney (P&W), which has led to the grounding of 28 planes.

In a statement, the airline said, “Go First is facing a financial crunch due to non-supply of engines by P&W that has forced grounding of planes. The CEO has filed an application for voluntary insolvency resolution proceedings before the NCLT.”

The sudden announcement has left many fliers disappointed and it remains to be seen what steps Go First takes to address its financial issues and how it compensates its passengers for the sudden cancellation of flights.

The passengers who had already booked their tickets with Go First have been expressing their outrage on different social media platforms.

  • UK convicts couriers who smuggled £104M cash into Dubai in suitcases on flights

UK convicts couriers who smuggled £104M cash into Dubai in suitcases on flights

    [ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: A network of criminal cash couriers caught smuggling 104 million pounds (Rs 10,69,96,30,697) of suspicious money in suitcases from United Kingdom (UK)

UK’s National Crime Agency said on Wednesday, April 26, that eleven smugglers had been convicted, along with the ringleader.

Four of the business class-flying smugglers were found guilty on Tuesday— 26-year-old  Beatrice Auty from London; 55-year-old Jonathan Johnson,  and 44-year-old Jo Emma Larvin, both from Ripon, North Yorkshire, and Amy Harrison, 27, from Worcester Park in Surrey, – at Isleworth Crown Court.

    MS Education Academy

The agency accused the smugglers of participating in 83 separate trips between November 2019 and October 2020, to smuggle bags full of drug money.

    Smuggling method

The smugglers boarded business-class flights to take advantage of the increased baggage allowance, and check-in as soon as possible before departure.

Smugglers have concealed sums of up to 500,000 pounds (Rs 5,14,60,750) by filling them in coffee cans or spraying them with air fresheners to mask the smell from police dogs at airports.

The gang members communicated via WhatsApp groups called Sunshine and Lollipops.

The British police had targeted the routes used to launder money for suspicious activities in London via Dubai, fearing that the money would be difficult to track once it was removed from the country.

“The laundering of such vast quantities of cash around the globe enables organised criminals and corrupt elites to clean or hide their ill-gotten gains.”

“Cash smugglers typically work on behalf of international controller networks, who move the finances of the international drug trade, people traffickers, fraudsters and other criminal groups, making the source of the money difficult to trace.”

“The criminality this enables costs the UK billions every year, causes misery and ruins lives across the world.”

“This case demonstrates the continued commitment by the NCA to crackdown on money laundering and close the vulnerabilities being exploited.”

said Adrian Searle, the NCA’s Director of the National Economic Crime Centre.

Couriers were paid about 3,000 pounds (Rs 3,08,660) for each trip.
