Israel responds to rocket fire from Lebanon with airstrikes in Gaza

    [ad_1]

Israel has launched a retaliatory strike against Lebanon and Gaza, following a second night of violent clashes in Jerusalem. The clashes at the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in the Old City of Jerusalem have raised tensions between Israelis and Palestinians, leading to rocket fire from both sides.

The violence began on Monday when Israeli police stormed the Al-Aqsa mosque compound, which is considered one of the holiest sites in Islam, during Ramadan prayers. The move sparked outrage among Palestinians, who responded by throwing rocks and other objects at Israeli police. The police responded with stun grenades and tear gas, leading to violent clashes that left over 300 Palestinians and over 20 police officers injured.

The violence continued on Tuesday night, with Palestinians throwing rocks and fireworks at Israeli police, who responded with rubber bullets, stun grenades and tear gas. The clashes continued into Wednesday, with Israeli police using stun grenades and tear gas to disperse the crowds.

In response to the escalating violence, the militant group Hamas fired rockets into Israel from Gaza on Tuesday evening, prompting Israel to respond with air strikes on Gaza. The Israeli military said it had hit a number of targets in Gaza, including a weapons manufacturing site and a military post.

On Wednesday, the Israeli military said it had launched further air strikes against targets in Gaza, including a Hamas tunnel network. The military said the strikes were in response to continued rocket fire from Gaza into Israel.

In addition to the rocket fire from Gaza, Israel also launched retaliatory strikes against Lebanon on Tuesday, after thirty rockets were fired into northern Israel from Lebanese territory. The Israeli military said it had hit the launch sites in Lebanon.

The situation in Jerusalem remains tense, with Israeli police patrolling the Old City and Palestinian protesters vowing to continue their demonstrations. The clashes have raised concerns about a potential escalation of violence in the region, as well as the wider implications for Israeli-Palestinian relations.

The United States and other world powers have called for calm and urged both sides to avoid any further escalation of violence. The UN Security Council is due to meet later on Wednesday to discuss the situation.

700 firefighters work to douse massive Dhaka wholesale market fire

    [ad_1]

Dhaka: About 700 firefighters continued working on Wednesday to completely douse a massive blaze that erupted at the Bangabazar in Dhaka — the biggest wholesale market in Bangladesh — 36 hours ago.

Brigadier General Md Main Uddin, Director General (DG) of the Fire Brigade of Bangladesh, told IANS that the firefighters were part of the 12 units that are currently pressed into service to douse the flames.

The firefighters are working in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh floors of the Anexco Tower that are warehouses.

    MS Education Academy

“We had declared this building vulnerable in 2019. After that I also gave them notice about 10 times, so that they do not conduct business here. Still the traders conducted their business,” he said.

He said that to put out the fire in Bangabazar there was a lack of water.

“To put out the fire, we had to bring water from Shahidullah Hall with a pump. The Air Force also assisted in dousing the fire by bringing water from Hatirjheel by helicopter. We also brought water from Buriganga. Apart from the three forces, WASA also assisted us in this work.”

The fire erupted at 6.10 a.m. on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday assured to provide the best support to the traders who suffered losses due to the blaze.

“I have already said that I will help them as much as I can and will monitor what kind of damage has been done,” she said at an event.

Describing the fire as a very tragic incident, Hasina said the suffering and cries of so many trades ahead of Eid is too much to bear.

The Prime Minister also lambasted those who attacked and vandalized the fire service headquarters, adding that they will be identified soon and action will be taken against them.

Telangana HC issues notice to QNet in Swapnalok Complex fire case

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court, on Monday issued notices to QNet Vihaan Direct Selling Private Limited in the fire accident case at the Swapnalok Complex in Secundrabad.

A two-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice N Tukaramji was dealing with a suo moto PIL taken up based on a media report on the fire accident that claimed the life of 6 staff members of Qnet.

Reports suggested that the lack of an emergency exit was found to be the major reason for the mishap while the management of the complex failed to install firefighting equipment in place after the first significant fire accident in 2011.

    MS Education Academy

Converting the report into PIL (Public Interest Litigation), the HC, on March 29 sought answers from the state and civic authorities as to why the fire safety norms were not followed.

According to a preliminary investigation, a short circuit was said to be the reason behind the blaze.

Following the mishap, GHMC officials seized the complex and set up a banner stating that the building was closed temporarily under safety measures.

While awaiting the response from the authorities, the court adjourned the matter to June 26.

Aurangabad clash: AIMIM MP’s key role in dousing communal fire

    [ad_1]

All-India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen’s (AIMIM) lone MP Syed Imtiyaz Jaleel was instrumental in restoring normally near the Ram temple in the Muslim-dominated area of Kiradpur on Wednesday night.

Communal violence erupted between Hindus and Muslims on the eve of Ram Navami after tensions erupted when a group of 15 Hindutva members, holding saffron flags arrived in the locality on bikes at 11.30 pm and shouted communal slogans.

Jaleel arrived at the location within 15 minutes of the altercation, and issued video statements of clarification busting all false news of the temple in the area being attacked. He managed to pacify over 500 riled-up Muslims and stayed the night on the temple premises alongside priests and 15 police officials of which only 2 were armed, reported Hindustan Times.

    MS Education Academy

“Had the temple been targeted and had I not reached in time, the violence would have spread rapidly across the state,” he said. “Besides the temple priests, a few women were hiding on the first floor, and around 15 policemen too had taken shelter inside. I assured them all that nothing would happen to them and the temple till I was there,” Jaleel was quoted by HT.

“One of the bikes dashed briefly against a bystander and a brawl erupted. A few elderly people, to control the situation, requested the bikers to leave,” said Jaleel.

    mexico migrant deaths 12386

“I was desperate because I saw a dead body, a body, a body, and I didn’t see him anywhere,” Infante Padrón said of her husband, Eduard Caraballo López, who in the end survived with only light injuries, perhaps because he was scheduled for release and was near a door.

But what she saw in those first minutes has become the center of a question much of Mexico is asking itself: Why didn’t authorities attempt to release the men — almost all from Guatemala, Honduras, Venezuela and El Salvador — before smoke filled the room and killed so many?

“There was smoke everywhere. The ones they let out were the women, and those (employees) with immigration,” Infante Padrón said. “The men, they never took them out until the firefighters arrived.”

“They alone had the key,” Infante Padrón said. “The responsibility was theirs to open the bar doors and save those lives, regardless of whether there were detainees, regardless of whether they would run away, regardless of everything that happened. They had to save those lives.”

Immigration authorities said they released 15 women when the fire broke out, but have not explained why no men were let out.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Wednesday that both immigration agents and security guards from a private contractor were present at the facility. He said any misconduct would be punished.

Pope Francis on Wednesday offered prayers at the end of his general audience for the victims who died in the “tragic fire.”

Surveillance video leaked Tuesday shows migrants, reportedly fearing they were about to be moved, placing foam mattresses against the bars of their detention cell and setting them on fire.

In the video, later confirmed by the government, two people dressed as guards rush into the camera frame, and at least one migrant appears by the metal gate on the other side. But the guards don’t appear to make any effort to open the cell doors and instead hurry away as billowing clouds of smoke fill the structure within seconds.

“What humanity do we have in our lives? What humanity have we built? Death, death, death,” thundered Bishop Mons. José Guadalupe Torres Campos at a Mass in memory of the migrants.

Mexico’s National Immigration Institute, which ran the facility, said it was cooperating in the investigation. Guatemala has already said that many of the victims were its citizens, but full identification of the dead and injured remains incomplete.

U.S. authorities have offered to help treat some of the 28 victims in critical or serious condition, most apparently from smoke inhalation.

Advocacy groups blamed the tragedy on a long series of decisions made by leaders in places like Venezuela and Central America, and by immigration policymakers in Mexico and the United States, as well of residents in Ciudad Juarez complaining about the number of migrants asking for handouts on street corners.

“Mexico’s immigration policy kills,” more than 30 migrant shelters and other advocacy organizations said in statement Tuesday.

Those same advocacy organizations published an open letter March 9 that complained of a criminalization of migrants and asylum-seekers in Ciudad Juarez. It accused authorities of abusing migrants and using excessive force in rounding them up, including complaints that municipal police questioned people in the street about their immigration status without cause.

The Mexican president had said Tuesday that the fire was started by migrants in protest after learning they would be deported or moved. “They never imagined that this would cause this terrible misfortune,” López Obrador said.

Immigration activist Irineo Mujica said the migrants feared being sent back, not necessarily to their home countries, but to southern Mexico, where they would have to cross the country all over again.

“When people reach the north, it’s like a ping-pong game — they send them back down south,” Mujica said.

“We had said that with the number of people they were sending, the sheer number of people was creating a ticking time bomb,” Mujica said. “Today that time bomb exploded.”

The migrants were stuck in Ciudad Jaurez because U.S. immigration policies don’t allow them to cross the border to file asylum claims. But they were rounded up because Ciudad Juarez residents were tired of migrants blocking border crossings or asking for money.

The high level of frustration in Ciudad Juarez was evident earlier this month when hundreds of mostly Venezuelan migrants tried to force their way across one of the international bridges to El Paso, acting on false rumors that the United States would allow them to enter the country. U.S. authorities blocked their attempts.

After that, Ciudad Juarez Mayor Cruz Pérez Cuellar started campaigning to inform migrants there was room in shelters and no need to beg in the streets. He urged residents not to give money to them, and said authorities removed migrants intersections where it was dangerous to beg and residents saw the activity as a nuisance.

For the migrants, the fire is another tragedy on a long trail of tears.

About 100 migrants gathered Tuesday outside the immigration facility’s doors to demand information about relatives. In many cases, they asked the same question Mexico is asking itself.

Katiuska Márquez, a 23-year-old Venezuelan woman with her two children, ages 2 and 4, was seeking her half-brother, Orlando Maldonado, who had been traveling with her.

“We want to know if he is alive or if he’s dead,” she said. She wondered how all the guards who were inside made it out alive and only the migrants died. “How could they not get them out?”
