Kakinada: Seven workers of an edible oil packaging factory in a village in Kakinada district were asphyxiated on Thursday when they got into an oil tank to clean it, police and district officials said.

The incident occurred at G Ragampet near here at around 8:30 AM when one of the labourers entered the tank to clean it.

He accidentally slipped and fell into it. In order to save him, seven other people entered the tank. Seven of them were asphyxiated while one of them survived.

Five of the deceased workers were from Paderu and two were from Peddapuram, police said.

The factory has been sealed and a case registered against it under IPC section 304A (death due to negligence), Kakinada District Collector Krithika Shukla told media.

She said a four-member committee headed by Joint Collector has been constituted to conduct an inquiry into the mishap and submit a report within three days.

The panel is currently going through the documents and the approval the factory had for running the oil packaging facility. Strict action will be initiated against those responsible for the lapses, officials said.

Post-mortem was underway and it will ascertain the cause of deaths, officials said.

An eyewitness told media that one person first entered the tank and the other followed as he did not come up.

Family members of the victims alleged that the factory management did not provide proper security gear to the workers.

Following the incident, a group of people held a protest demanding Rs 1 crore compensation be given to families of each of the deceased.

Students’ food poisoning: Karnataka Police lodge FIR against college management

    [ad_1]

Dakshina Kannada: Karnataka Police on Tuesday lodged an FIR against the college management in Dakshina Kannada district in connection with the food poisoning case in which 231 students fell seriously sick after meals at the hostel mess.

District Education Officer Dr Jagadish had lodged a complaint with Kadri police station against the management of the City College of Nursing , alleging that suspicious, poisonous food is being given to girl hostel inmates.

It also mentions that the management has not maintained hygiene during preparation of food and while admitting the students to hospitals, the management had kept the district administration in the dark.

The District Education Officer, Principal, and district officers jointly inspected the kitchen of the hostel. The samples of food items, drinking water, stored meat and other articles have been sent to the lab. The direction had been given not to prepare any food in the kitchen.

Following the incident, the meeting of parents and college management had been organised where parents vented their ire on non-availability of hygienic food, and a few parents maintain that they don’t know in which hospital their kids are being treated. A holiday has been declared in the college till future directions.

Dakshina Kannada District Commissioner M.R. Ravikumar stated on Tuesday that 116 students are still being treated at the various hospitals, and their stools, and blood samples have been sent for testing.

The incident had taken place at around 9 p.m. on Monday. Sources say the students fell sick after eating ghee rice and chicken. While 115 students have returned to the hostel after the treatment, a special medical team, with an ambulance, had been sent to the hostel to monitor their condition.

  • Tunisha suicide case: Sheezan Khan moves HC for bail and quashing of FIR

Tunisha suicide case: Sheezan Khan moves HC for bail and quashing of FIR

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Actor Sheezan Khan, arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide of his co-star Tunisha Sharma, has moved the Bombay High Court seeking bail and quashing of the case.

Khan in his petitions said to have a relationship and break-ups are normal facets of life and hence he cannot be held responsible for Tunisha’s death.

While Khan’s plea seeking bail would be heard by a single bench of Justice M S Karnik on Tuesday, his second petition for quashing of the FIR and release on interim bail is likely to be heard by a division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and P K Chavan on January 30.

Tunisha (21), who last acted in the TV serial Ali Baba: Dastaan-E-Kabul, was found hanging in the washroom on the set of the serial near Vasai in Palghar district of Maharashtra on December 24, 2022. Khan (28) was arrested the next for alleged abetment. He is currently lodged in a Thane jail.

Seeking quashing of the case, Khan said if two people are in any form of a relationship, and if the relationship is terminated either mutually or even by one of them, then the mere fact that the other person commits suicide does not justify the registration of an offence under section 306 of IPC with its consequences of arrest and custody.
The plea added that in Khan’s case, there is nothing to even suggest that he had done any act with the specific intention of compelling Tunisha Sharma to commit suicide.

“There is absolutely no mens rea (intention) pointed out or for that matter acts and deeds from which a mens rea is made out for the applicant to commit the alleged crime,” it said.

The petition said to enter into a relationship and break-up are normal facets of life.

“That the victim has also been in multiple relationships before and also the present relationship ended on a graceful note. That the break-up was mutual and approximately two weeks back and the victim had admittedly moved on, thus the breakup cannot be viewed as a direct action and proximate cause leaving the victim with no other option but to commit suicide,” it stated.

Khan and Tunisha have acted in a few television serials and were said to be in a relationship which allegedly came to an end just weeks before Tunisha was found hanging on the production set of her show.
