Zelenskyy ‘born for this moment,’ Sean Penn says at film festival

    [ad_1]

“It’s hard to explain, but there was a resolve in reaction to something that no one has ever faced before,” Penn said.

At a press conference also Saturday, Penn said they returned to the hotel after the interview and the shelling started that very night. When they first met Zelenskyy, he had “a proper suit and a proper office.”

“The next time we saw him, he was in camos and his country was at war,” Penn said.

The outbreak of war sent the documentary on an unexpected track. The film contains further interviews with the president conducted over the past year.

After completing the project, the pair have continued to speak off camera. Zelenskyy presented the Hollywood star — who has been involved in numerous international humanitarian and anti-war efforts over the years — with the Ukrainian Order of Merit last year. Penn was also given a plaque on a Kyiv walkway honoring world leaders who have shown solidarity with Ukraine.

Penn told the AP that people would be most surprised by Zelenskyy’s “command of the mechanisms of government.”

“Not only his, but all of those upon whom he is reliant, his sense of mapping the diplomatic territory,” he said. “He’s on fire. He has that extreme gift for politics.”

Penn recalled the “civility” he saw when leaving Ukraine via the Polish border a few days after the invasion began.

“No one was honking. No one was trying to drive around the other and take and there was a kind of quiet acceptance,” Penn said during the interview. “You know, and these were families being torn apart. Some, most remain torn apart.”

During a later visit to Ukraine, Penn loaned one of his two Oscars to Zelenskyy, telling him: “When you win, bring it back to Malibu.”

“The Oscar is there in his office and it’s ready to be melted anytime he wants to melt it,” Penn clarified in the press conference after threatening to smelt his awards in public if Zelenskyy was not on the program for last year’s Oscar telecast.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences did not include a video address from the president, opting instead for a moment of silence in support of the people of Ukraine. Zelenskyy did address the opening of the Berlinale on Thursday, exhorting artists and filmmakers to express support for Ukraine.

Penn said at the press conference that the gift of the Oscar was inspired by his “continuing shame towards the leadership of the Academy, the motion picture academy, in choosing to present Will Smith smacking Chris Rock rather than the greatest symbol of cinema and humanity living today on their broadcast.”

Penn’s two Oscars both were for best actor, in 2003 for “Mystic River” and in 2008 for “Milk.”

While it is not unusual for entertainment personalities to get behind a cause, “Superpower” sees Penn travel all the way to the front line of the war to talk to soldiers in the trenches. When it comes to his drive and determination, the star couldn’t tell you where that comes from.

“I could make up a number of answers” he joked to the AP. “It’s something I just don’t really ultimately think about, though I’ve been asked many times. … I don’t have the words for it.”

  • Rajamouli not sure if he would helm film on RSS scripted by his dad

Rajamouli not sure if he would helm film on RSS scripted by his dad

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Well-known filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli has said that he is not sure if he would direct a film on Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the script of which has been penned by his father and Rajya Sabha MP, Vijayendra Prasad.

In an interview to an international publication, the ‘RRR’ and ‘Baahubali’ director said while he would be honoured to direct the story, he is not sure if his father had written this script for some other organisation or producer.

Terming the story as a beautiful, human and emotional drama, Rajamouli also revealed that he cried many times while reading it.

Vijayendra Prasad, who had written the stories for the blockbusters ‘RRR’ and ‘Baahubali’, is currently working on a film about the RSS.

Prasad, who is a member of Rajya Sabha, had said in August last year that that he was going to helm both a film and a web series glorifying the RSS.

The screenwriter heaped praise on the RSS, and said that his formerly negative opinion about the organisation had changed since he was roped in to write a film on it.

Rajamouli, however, said in the interview that he is not too aware of the RSS.

“I have obviously heard of the organisation, but I don’t know how it was formed, what its exact beliefs are, how it has developed and all that,” he said.

The filmmaker, however, said that he read his father’s script.

“It is extremely emotional. I cried many times while reading that script. The script’s drama made me cry, but that reaction has got nothing to do with the history part of the story,” he said.

When asked if he would direct the movie, he said he is not sure.

Rajamouli said: “First of all, I don’t know whether that would be possible, because I don’t know if my father has written this script for some other organisation, people, or producer.

“Still, as for the question, I don’t have a definite answer. I would be honoured to direct the story, because it’s such a beautiful, human, and emotional drama. But I’m not sure about the script’s implications. I’m not saying that it would cause either a negative or a positive impact. For the first time, I’m not sure.”

It was in 2018 that there were reports about Vijayendra Prasad writing a film on RSS. It was reported that the film will highlight the contributions made by K.B. Hedgewar, M.S. Golwalkar, Veer Savarkar, K.S. Sudarshan and Mohan Bhagwat to the organisation.

At a book launch event of RSS leader Ram Madhav in Vijayawada on August 16, 2022, Prasad had confessed that until three or four years ago, he did not know much about the RSS and that like many others, he believed that they killed Mahatma Gandhi.

Prasad had said: “But four years ago, they asked me to write a film on RSS. As I was being paid for it, I went to Nagpur and met Mohan Bhagwat. I stayed there for a day and understood for the first time what RSS is. I felt a lot of remorse that I wasn’t aware of such a great organisation for so long.”

In July last year, Prasad was nominated to Rajya Sabha. The BJP-led government said that he has been instrumental in instilling cultural pride and nationalistic spirit through cinema.

Hailing from Andhra Pradesh, Prasad has written stories for many Telugu and Hindi movies.

His notable works include some of the highest-grossing Indian movies such as ‘Baahubali’ series, ‘RRR’ and ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’.

‘Kuch logon ko zindagi bhar jhooth bolna padta hai’:Anupam Kher reacts to Prakash Raj’s ‘nonsense film’ comment on The Kashmir Files

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Vivek Agnihotri’s ‘The Kashmir Files’ has been in controversy since its release and the movie was criticised by various popular personalities in the industry.  From Israeli film producer to Prakash Raj, several people openly termed the film ‘Propaganda against the particular community. The director and cast of the movie have always defended the film and they claim that the movie is based on real stories.

Bollywood actor Anupam Kher has again come into the defence of the movie and recently addressed Prakash Raj’s ‘one of the nonsense films’ comments on the movie. He said that some people have to live life with the help of lies.

In a interview with the Navbharat Times, Anupam said,  “Apni apni aukat ki baat karte hain log. Kuch logon ko zindagi bhar jhooth bolna padta hai, kuch log zindagi bhar sach bolte hain. Main un logon mein se hoon jo zindagi bhar sach bol ke zindagi jiyein hain. Jisko jhooth bol ke jeena hai vo uski marzi hai. (People talk according to their status. Some people have to lie all their lives, while others speak the truth. I am one of those who have spoken the truth, throughout my life. Those who want to live by lying, it’s their wish).”

Prakash during an event in Kerala had earlier said, “The Kashmir Files is one of the nonsense films, but we know who produced it. Shameless. International jury spit on them. They are still shameless. The other fellow, the director is still telling, ‘Why I am not getting Oscar?’ He will not even get a Bhaskar.”

“I tell you because there is a sensitive media out there. Here you can do a propaganda film. I know, according to my sources, they have invested around ₹2000 crore only to make films like this. But you can’t fool people all the time,” he further added.

The Kashmir Files movie highlights the exodus of Kashmiri Hindus from Kashmir in the 1990s. It is produced by Zee Studios and stars  Anupam in the lead role alongside Pallavi Joshi, Mithun Chakraborty and Darshan Kumaar among others.

SRK, Salman to square off in Tiger v/s Pathaan film

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Viewers were in for a treat with the scene featuring Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan in the spy-action thriller ‘Pathaan’. Well now, the two superstars will be taking each other head on in the new film which will be an extension of the YRF spy-universe.

While SRK’s ‘Pathaan’ continues to smash box-office records, Salman will be bringing the magic of Tiger with his Diwali release ‘Tiger 3’. But, the bigger story lies with the two-hero film featuring the superstars which will put them against each other more than two decades after their last collaboration ‘Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam’.

As per a media report by Pinkvilla, the basic script of the film has been locked by YRF head-honcho Aditya Chopra, who by the way made a rare on camera appearance in the recently released streaming docu-series ‘The Romantics’.

Shridhar Raghavan, who wrote the script for ‘War’ and ‘Pathaan’ has been entrusted with the duty of the writers’ mentor of the spy-universe. The film will bring the face-off between two of the biggest forces in Bollywood much like what happened with Iron Man and Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and ‘Batman vs Superman’ from the DC Universe.

‘All he wanted was to serve France’: brother makes film about elite recruit’s initiation death

    [ad_1]

A new film has thrown a spotlight on France’s elite military school, Saint-Cyr, more than a decade after a “testosterone fuelled” hazing ritual ended with the death of a brilliant army officer recruit.

Pour la France recounts the tragedy of Jallal Hami, 24, who drowned after officers ordered him and other new recruits to swim an icy lake in heavy gear during a midnight “exercise”.

The recruits entered the water to the sound of Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries – a nod to Francis Ford Coppola’s film Apocalypse Now – playing from a speaker. Several had to be dragged out of the water, but the organisers insisted a second group, including Hami, attempt the 50-metre crossing.

The film, selected for last September’s Venice film festival and released to positive reviews on Wednesday, was made by the dead man’s brother, the film director Rachid Hami, who said it was not a settling of scores.

“Everybody covered the story of my brother’s death as a news event, but nobody told the real story of the young man who was my brother,” Rachid said. “This is a cinematic project inspired by Jallal’s story, it’s not a documentary, which would have been a cliche.”

    Jallal Hami in uniform.
Student officer Jallal Hami drowned at the elite Saint-Cyr military academy.

He added: “I had great difficult going back over what happened and had to let time pass to clear my head because you cannot make a film in anger and I wanted this to be a great film, not one about rage or fury.”

Jallal, born in Algeria, was four when his mother, Hadjira, brought him and Rachid, then aged seven, to France in 1992 to escape the north African country’s civil war.

The family settled in the Paris suburb Seine-Saint-Denis, where Jallal excelled at school and went on to elite university Sciences Po, spending a year in Taiwan learning Mandarin. After graduating, he joined the Saint-Cyr military school in Brittany, founded in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, which is the equivalent of the UK’s Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

Hami was described as an “excellent” recruit and put on a fast track for a high-ranking army career. The risk of dying on a battlefield – Mort pour la France – was one he accepted, he told his family.

Hazing and similar initiation rites are banned in France, but on the night of 29 October 2012, Hami and other recruits were woken, ordered to dress and don helmets and were taken out to cross a lake where the water was 9C. It was an exercise in the “transmission of traditions”, they were told. When a first group got into difficulty they were thrown lifebelts but as a second group, including Hami, were halfway across, the spotlight illuminating the lake inexplicably went out and he disappeared. His body was found by firefighters several hours later.

Seven serving and former Saint-Cyr officers – including a general – went on trial for manslaughter in 2020. The state prosecutor said the hazing ritual, fuelled by “uncontrolled testosterone”, had descended into “madness”. Four officers were acquitted and three others given suspended sentences of between six and eight months.

The Hami family was doubly enraged to learn the convictions would not be registered on the men’s criminal records. “You have betrayed my brother again,” Rachid Hami said afterwards. “All he wanted was to serve France, the country that had welcomed him.”

French critics have praised Pour la France, selected for last September’s Venice film festival, as a thoughtful and moving treatment of a personal tragedy and what happens when ordinary people confront a closed, conservative and traditional institution such as the French military, nicknamed la grande muette (the great mute) for its silent closing of ranks.

Hami’s family felt he deserved the honour of an official funeral. The army at first refused, arguing he had not fallen in combat, but then relented and gave him a military send off. The young officer’s tricolor-draped coffin was then taken to Père-Lachaise cemetery, in Paris.

“Pour la France reenacts this confrontation, without going overboard, but by describing a complex field of forces and tensions, linked to the history of immigration, as well as to the wounds linked to identity,” wrote Le Monde.

Rachid said he is still angry with the individuals he holds responsible for his brother’s death, but not the military as a whole.

“I wanted to avoid the cliche of the immigrant, north African, Muslim family from the banlieue battling the army. There are already dozens of films like that,” he said. “Instead, this is the story of a young man and his adventures in life. It’s a family odyssey; a contemporary version of the Greek tragedy of Antigone.”

This article was amended on 15 February 2023 because an earlier version said that Jallal Hami attended Sorbonne University. In fact the institution he attended was Sciences Po.
