    [ad_1]

Mysuru: Senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday filed nomination from Varuna constituency in this district, for the May 10 Karnataka Assembly polls.

The Leader of Opposition in the Assembly was accompanied by former Minister H C Mahadevappa and Congress leaders.

Siddaramaiah’s son Dr Yathindra Siddaramaiah is the sitting Congress MLA from Varuna.

    MS Education Academy

The 75-year-old, eight time MLA, had earlier won twice from Varuna, and went on to become the Leader of Opposition after winning from here in 2008, and then became Chief Minister after 2013 Assembly polls.

The Congress legislature party leader offered prayers to his family deity Siddarameshwara at the temple in his native village of Siddaramanahundi, and also visited Sri Rama temple there, and held a massive roadshow before filing the nomination.

He also visited the famous Chamundeshwari temple, on Chamundi hills in Mysuru, and addressed a public meeting ahead of filing papers.

The ruling BJP has fielded Minister V Somanna from Varuna to take on Siddaramaiah.

By filing nomination in Varuna, Siddaramaiah has returned to his home constituency after contesting from neighbouring Chamundeshwari, and Badami in Bagalkote district, in 2018 polls. He had faced a defeat in Chamundeshwari, but had won in Badami.

A Chief Ministerial aspirant in the event of Congress coming to power, he has already declared that this will be his last election.

Filing of nominations for the election ends on April 20. Voting will take place on May 10 and the counting of votes will be on May 13.

  • Bilkis Bano case: Centre, Gujarat may seek review of SC’s ‘remission files’ order

Bilkis Bano case: Centre, Gujarat may seek review of SC’s ‘remission files’ order

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Centre and the Gujarat government on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that they may file a plea seeking a review of its March 27 order asking them to be ready with original files on the grant of remission to the convicts in the Bilkis Bano case.

A bench of Justices K M Joseph and B V Nagarathna questioned the paroles granted to 11 convicts during their incarceration period and said the gravity of the offence could have been considered by the state.

It said, “A pregnant woman was gang-raped and several people were killed. You cannot compare victim’s case with standard section 302 (murder) cases. Like you cannot compare apples with oranges, similarly massacre cannot be compared with single murder. Crimes are generally committed against society and the community. Unequals cannot be treated equally.”

    MS Education Academy

“The question is whether government applied its mind and what material formed the basis of its decision to grant remission,” the bench said, adding, “Today it is Bilkis but tomorrow it can be anyone. It may be you or me. If you do not show your reasons for grant of remission, then we will draw our own conclusions.”

The bench posted the batch of pleas challenging the remission to the convicts in Bilkis Bano case for final disposal on May 2 and asked all the convicts who have not been served notices to file their replies.

It asked the Centre and the state to make its stand clear about filing of a review plea.

On March 27, terming Bilkis Bano’s gang-rape and the murder of her family members during the 2002 Godhra riots as a “horrendous” act, the Supreme Court had asked the Gujarat government whether uniform standards, as followed in other cases of murder, were applied while granting remission to the 11 convicts in the case.

It had sought a response from the Centre, Gujarat government and others on a plea filed by Bilkis Bano, who was gang-raped and seven members of her family were killed during the 2002 post-Godhra riots.

Bano has challenged the remission of sentence of 11 convicts in the case.

All 11 convicts were granted remission by the Gujarat government and released on August 15 last year.

The top court seized of PILs filed by CPI(M) leader Subhashini Ali, Revati Laul, an independent journalist, Roop Rekha Verma, who is a former vice chancellor of the Lucknow University, and TMC MP Mahua Moitra against the release of the convicts.

Bano was 21 years old and five months pregnant when she was gang-raped while fleeing the riots that broke out after the Godhra train burning incident. Her three-year-old daughter was among the seven family members killed.

    MS Education Academy

With a saffron shawl on his shoulder, the 63-year-old Chief Minister visited Shiggaon’s ‘Dyamavva Devi’ temple, before filing his nomination.

“I have filed my nomination today. People of my Shiggaon constituency have supported me tremendously in the past and this time too, I’m confident of breaking all the records and getting elected with the highest number of votes.

People here are aware voters and they vote for development,” Bommai said after filing his nomination.

Pointing out that he had submitted his nomination papers as there was a good muhurta (time) today, Bommai added that he will be filing a nomination once again on April 19 in the presence of BJP national President J P Nadda and other senior leaders.

To a question that Congress was planning to field a strong candidate against him, the Chief Minister said, “Opponent is an opponent whether strong or weak, I will take everyone equally.

If there are opponents, only then there will be a contest. I’m confidence in the people of my constituency, who have supported me.”
Bommai won in Shiggaon in the 2018 Assembly polls by about 9,260 votes.

ED files FEMA case against BBC India

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate has registered a FEMA case against news broadcaster BBC India for foreign exchange violations, official sources said Thursday.

The federal probe agency has also called for documents and the recording of statements of some company executives under provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), they said.

The probe is essentially looking at purported foreign direct investment (FDI) violations by the company, they said.

    MS Education Academy

The moves comes in the backdrop of the Income-Tax department surveying BBC office premises in Delhi in February.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the administrative body for the I-T department, had then said the income and profits shown by various BBC group entities were “not commensurate” with the scale of their operations in India and tax has not been paid on certain remittances by its foreign entities.

  • Karnataka BJP MLA files police complaint after ‘indecent photos’ go viral

Karnataka BJP MLA files police complaint after ‘indecent photos’ go viral

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Karnataka BJP MLA Sanjeeva Matandoor on Thursday lodged a police complaint in connection with the release of his alleged indecent photographs with an unidentified woman in Dakshina Kannada district.

Matandoor has also stated that the viral photos were edited and made viral as part of a conspiracy to ensure his downfall. He lodged the complaint with the Uppinangady police station and demanded police to initiate a legal action against those who are making the photos viral.

The police have registered an FIR under the provision of the Information Technology Act and are investigating the case.

    MS Education Academy

The development is seen as yet another setback to the ruling BJP party in Karnataka ahead of polls in May. The alleged photos of the BJP MLA from Puttur Assembly constituency with an unidentified woman in a jolly mood have gone viral on social media in Dakshina Kannada district.

Sources said that it was a handiwork of BJP insiders.

Sources also said that the intention in this episode was to put pressure on the party to deny the ticket to Matandoor. There is a hectic lobby against him and even Congress wants to wrestle the seat, they add. In the 2018 elections, Matandoor had defeated Congress candidate Shakuntala Shetty by 19,447 votes.

There were rumours spread about Matandoor over a private video earlier also. Sources said that Matandoor, has done a good work on the ground, but has many enemies within the party and even the Sangh Parivar leaders are not happy about him.

BJP sources said that the party has considered the development seriously. At a time when the party is still recovering from the shock of the arrest of BJP MLA Madal Virupakshappa, this development has upset the party.

Arun Kumar, a Hindu activist, and Ashok Rai, an industrialist, social activist and a supporter of former Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda, are also ticket aspirants from the Puttur constituency.
