New Delhi: Delhi University students held a rally at the north campus on Thursday demanding justice for victims of alleged harassment during a cultural festival at the Indraprastha College for Women (IPCW).

The allleged harassment occurred during the fest last week.

The protest rally was organised by the Left-backed All India Students Association (AISA), and Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS) activists also participated in it.

The protesting students demanded the resignation of the IPCW principal Poonam Kumria, and submitted a memorandum to the DU Vice-Chancellor asking for her dismissal.

“It should be noted that instead of taking immediate action on the demands of the protesting women students and activists, the DU and IPCW administrations have hitherto been adamant in their apathy,” KYS said in a statement.

  • Hyderabad: Arena Polo, a horse and rider fest fit for kings

Hyderabad: Arena Polo, a horse and rider fest fit for kings

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The recent HPRC International Women’s Arena Polo Tournament, jointly staged by the HPRC, Polo Yatra and United States Polo Association (USPA) had everything a sports fan would look for–high action, entertainment and glamour. Although no player had a handicap higher than one, with just half a point separating the two teams, the final between the UK and USA had its share of thrills and spills.

These kept a goodly crowd glued to the elevated galleries, which gave them a ringside view of the happenings unfolding before their eyes. A giant screen relayed the action too. For those who couldn’t quite follow the proceedings, Sharad Saxena’s flawless commentary regaled the audience even while enlightening it about the sport’s finer points.

Telangana’s Director General of Police Anjani Kumar, who was the chief guest, opened the final with a ‘throw-in’ to signal the start of the first ‘chukker’ or period of play, lasting about seven minutes. The ball is generally tossed in the middle of two teams lined up against each other by the umpire but the organisers gave that a twist by inviting celebrities to do the honours.

The three subsequent chukkers commenced with the orange-coloured ball being flipped in by Jennifer Larson, Consul General, USA Consulate General, Hyderabad, Tollywood actor Sumanth and Tejaswini Chowdhury. Fresh mounts from the HPRC’s 90-strong stable arrived for each session, their tails neatly braided, their feet carefully bandaged.

Sure enough, not a single horse misbehaved ! Thereon, but for game and clock stoppages for infringement of rules, it was non-stop action, even when the ball ricocheted off the walls.

The 18-5 scoreline in UK’s favour left little doubt about the superior side. Led from the front by Rosanna Turk, her compatriots Alice Walsh and Kristina Karailieva vibed well with their captain on marauding runs by the minute. Turk, adjudged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the championship, attacked with aplomb.

Her neck shots propelled the sphere forward, her hits from close or long range invariably finding the mark. So did her backhanders result in accurate passes to teammates, to carry forward their cause, or were dogged in defence of their citadel.

Carolyn Stimmel, the American skipper, showed a lot of grit and gusto. Few would believe she’s a grandmother, her husband and four sons, all active polo players, back home. Cecily Coors, a winner of the 2022 US Open Women’s polo championship and the International Women’s Invitational in Jamaica in 2022 and 2023, turns out for the Denver Polo Club in Colorado. Surprisingly, she was mostly a reserve in the final !

But the foursome from the USA was most gracious, their resounding defeat no deterrent to their good cheer. So was the side generous in its compliments for the victors who had vanquished them. That bonhomie was carried over to the valedictory function too. Members of the two international teams and India, which finished third, were all praise for the quality of the horses and the good care taken of them by the grooms.

If the success of a tournament can be gauged by feedback from its players, the fun and laughter that followed was enough evidence that it went down well with everyone involved. The loudest clapping was perhaps reserved for Chaitania Kumar, President, HPRC, who kept a low profile but made sure everyone had a good time.

Ms Larson and Gareth Wynn Owen, Deputy High Commissioner of Great Britain, gave away the prizes.

Keystone Infra Pvt Ltd., Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Galaxy Impex, INHABIT and Shree Raj Jewellers sponsored the well-conducted tournament  at the HPRC’s tastefully laid out premises in Aziz Nagar, Gandipet.

Author of ‘My way–The biography of M.L. Jaisimha’ (Apple Books, Amazon, Flipkart), A. Joseph Antony is on the commentary panels of Sony Sports, Doordarshan and Fancode and an ex-Senior Assistant Editor, The Hindu.

  • CPAC is a Trump love fest — he needs it to be

CPAC is a Trump love fest — he needs it to be

    [ad_1]

Already there are signs that this year’s CPAC might be off to a rocky start. Some Republicans are predicting lower turnout, and at least two attendees said they were contacted this week about purchasing a $375 ticket to the marquee Ronald Reagan Dinner, headlined by Trump acolyte and former Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake.

Trump is hoping to lock up a straw poll of the 2024 Republican field again this year. His Saturday evening speech to a hall of adoring supporters — likely to span well over an hour — will cap off the four-day event. For Trump, being greeted by a sea of red hats and life-size cardboard cutouts will provide the visuals to prove he remains the leader of the conservative movement. This year’s CPAC isn’t designed for a wide field of potential presidential candidates to court voters — it’s Trump’s chance to position himself as inevitable.

His likely top rival in a GOP primary, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, is skipping CPAC along with other potential 2024 candidates and top Republican officials. Former Vice President Mike Pence and Sen. Tim Scott will gather with DeSantis and other GOP presidential hopefuls behind closed doors at The Breakers, a luxury Palm Beach resort, to address donors at a retreat hosted by the anti-tax group Club for Growth. Trump was not invited to attend.

Former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, the two other major declared presidential contenders, are the only candidates who will attend both gatherings.

CPAC was once the ground zero for grassroots Republican activists and would attract a broad spectrum of conservative leaders. But during the Trump years, it has effectively morphed into an arm of the MAGA movement, fully reflective of the populist, America First wing of the party. Among the panels at this year’s event are such Trump-themed sessions as “Finish the Wall, Build the Dome,” and “They Stole It From Us Legally,” in reference to the 2020 election.

CPAC’s pull on establishment Republicans appears to have waned not just because the organization has tied itself closely to Trump. The conservative group is also navigating a serious public relations crisis as its chair, Matt Schlapp, faces sexual assault allegations from a GOP campaign staffer. The alleged victim, a former employee of Herschel Walker’s Senate campaign, sued Schlapp and his wife Mercedes in January for nearly $10 million. The couple has denied wrongdoing.

It was CPAC that welcomed Trump back with open arms for his first public appearance in 2021 after he left the White House in disgrace following the Jan. 6 insurrection. But his ties to the gathering extend back to 2011. And four months before he announced his presidential bid in 2015, Trump tested his populist campaign message on the CPAC stage, telling the crowd of activists they were his “kind of people.” “I love you people … You are conservative, you work, you love the country. It’s very simple,” Trump said.

CPAC’s speakers this year include a host of Republican senators allied with Trump, including three who have already endorsed him for president: Sens. Tommy Tuberville, J.D. Vance, and Eric Schmitt. And notably, the only member of Republican leadership speaking at CPAC this year is Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, who was one of the first to endorse Trump’s 2024 run. Right-wing commentator Candace Owens, MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, and the former president of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro are also listed as featured speakers.

A super PAC supporting Trump, MAGA Inc., is among CPAC’s exhibitors and will host a private reception Saturday ahead of Trump’s speech.

Other stars in the party have effectively conceded the event to the former president, choosing to skip out of this year’s festivities entirely. That includes the chair of the Republican National Committee, Ronna McDaniel, who a year ago called the energy at the conference “amazing” after taking the stage in Orlando. At the time, the RNC was a CPAC sponsor. The committee did not seek a sponsorship this year.

It’s unclear if McDaniel received an invitation to speak at this year’s CPAC — representatives for both camps did not immediately respond to a request for comment. At the RNC’s winter meeting in Dana Point, Calif. in January, Schlapp was scheduled to attend as the guest of a supporter of Harmeet Dhillon, McDaniel’s challenger in her reelection bid for chair. Schlapp ultimately did not attend the event, which took place soon after he was served with a lawsuit over the sexual assault allegations.

Also skipping out on this year’s CPAC is Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, another Republican considered a potential presidential candidate. Carney, who serves as a consultant to Abbott, said the governor is only participating in in-state events until the legislative session concludes in June. Abbott spoke at the start of CPAC’s August convention in Dallas.

And while a cast of Fox News stars have studded conservative conferences in recent months — Sean Hannity at CPAC Dallas in August, and both Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingraham at Turning Point USA’s year-end conference in Phoenix — none of those high-profile commentators are scheduled to appear this weekend. Nor is Fox Nation, the network’s digital streaming platform, listed as a sponsor this year, as it has been previously.

The Schlapps have notably been absent from Fox’s airwaves since the allegations surfaced. And in recent weeks, the couple has taken to right-wing news services like Newsmax and Steve Bannon’s “War Room” to drum up buzz about this year’s CPAC event.

CPAC’s annual presidential straw poll is guaranteed to receive media attention. The poll, done by a secret ballot, and the results of which are released at the end of the weekend, will ask conference attendees their preference in a mock 2024 presidential GOP primary. But without DeSantis, Pence, Scott or other potential 2024 hopefuls speaking at the event, it is unclear how indicative the poll will be of widespread Republican thinking.

“The straw poll is going to be a less accurate indication of where the grassroots are than in years past because DeSantis isn’t here, Trump is the only big name speaker who is going to be here,” said a Republican strategist who regularly attends CPAC. “You have to take the results with a grain of salt.”

Casteist slur in college fest: Karnataka Cong raises concern, urges for action

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Karnataka Congress on Saturday raised concern over use of casteist slur in a skit performed at a college fest here.

“There is a video containing abusive and objectionable content on Dr B.R. Ambedkar and Dalit communities being exhibited in a programme organised at Jain college in Bengaluru,” it stated in its social media handle.

Demanding an action by the City Police Commissioner and Bengaluru police in this regard, the party said, “The police should take cognisance of the incident and initiate legal action.”

The incident during a college skit recently in Bengaluru has triggered a row with a police complaint being registered.

‘The Delroys Boys’, who performed the skit, have tendered an unconditional apology for the same. However, the debate over the issue is gaining traction.

On Thursday evening a group of students published an online petition on Jhatkaa.org bringing the incident to light. The petition stated the college contingent from Jain University’s Centre for Management Studies (CMS) staged an incredibly casteist and insensitive skit at the event.

The anonymous petitioners objected to the normalisation of caste discrimination in the pretext of humour. The skit was performed as part of ‘MadAds,’ a segment at the fest where the participants had to advertise imaginary products along lines of humour.

‘The Delroys Boys’, the theatre group from CMS, who are in the thick of controversy, in their skit, exhibited a man belonging to the lower caste attempting to date an upper caste woman. The skit turned B.R. Ambedkar as Beer Ambedkar. The phase of why be Dalit, when you can be D-Lit.

Akshay Bansode, State Member of the Vanchit Bahujan Yuva Aghadi has filed a police complaint in Maharashtra under provisions of the Atrocity Act and IPC. The complainant had urged the police to treat the complaint as FIR and initiate action against the performers and University.

The complainant had urged the police to treat the complaint as an FIR and initiate action against the performers and University.

Sources explain that the controversial skit was performed at other platforms. The Delroys Boys maintained that they apologise to everyone they have spoken badly about.
