How much it meant was clear as Charles Leclerc climbed from his car having taken pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and vigorously pointed to the prancing horse logo on his chest. Pumped by an immaculate performance, he and the Scuderia will view this as the belated opening to 2023 they wanted – but what follows this weekend will more accurately define the scale of their challenge to a dominant Red Bull.

    Leclerc has taken a battering in the opening three races. He suffered an engine failure in Bahrain, a 10-place grid penalty in Saudi Arabia and was unlucky to be punted out of the race on the first lap in Australia. After a week in which he has had to dismiss rumours of talks with Mercedes to join the team should Lewis Hamilton retire, and in which it was announced that Ferrari’s racing director, Laurent Mekies, is to leave to replace Franz Tost as team principal at AlphaTauri – a blow after the recent loss of technical director David Sanchez to McLaren – Leclerc delivered reason for the embattled team to finally breathe out.

    Scrutiny is part of the gig at Ferrari but it carries more weight when the horse is lame, only adding to the intensity of the task at hand as Leclerc acknowledged of his pole. “It’s good, it feels good, the whole team needed it,” he said. “It’s part our job to deal with rumours and pressure, and sometimes it is difficult to perform under those circumstances, but we did really well.”

    Ending Red Bull’s hegemony over pole position this season was reason for Leclerc to feel he had made his mark on the streets of Baku, but the Monégasque driver knows only too well that the business end of the weekend remains ahead. He has now taken pole in Azerbaijan three years in a row, but on the last two occasions was unable to convert them to victory.

    A hoodoo to vanquish then but it will not be easy. Red Bull’s championship leader Max Verstappen will have his part to play and he remained optimistic about his car’s formidable race pace after being beaten into second, with the Dutchman’s teammate Sergio Pérez in third.

    Before Sunday, however, Leclerc and the rest will have to reset entirely for another full day of competition as F1 adopts its new sprint race format in Azerbaijan. Having revised the unsatisfactory previous structure, Saturday will now host what is being called the sprint shootout qualifying, a truncated version of the traditional arrangement, which will decide the grid for the sprint race that will follow.

    The sprint will be over 100km with points from eight to one for the top eight, while both events will be standalone and have no bearing on Sunday’s grand prix, with the sport hoping the new structure will address the shortcomings of the previous format to encourage drivers to race harder.

    There is no reason Leclerc should not repeat his feat on Saturday morning but the margins will be tight once more. They could not have been closer as the sun began to sink low in the sky in Baku on Friday. Verstappen had set the benchmark with a time of 1min 40.445sec on his first hot lap, pushing hard past the walls of the demanding street circuit, but Leclerc was equally brilliant in his challenge, matching the Dutchman’s time down to the thousandth of a second.

    On the final laps Leclerc went out first and immediately found an aggressive but beautifully judged line, going quicker in the opening two sectors with a brilliant lap that Verstappen could not match to claim pole with a time of 1:40.203.

    Behind them Mercedes were reminded of the task that lies ahead. Lewis Hamilton put in a mighty effort to take fifth but remained a full second off Leclerc’s time, while his teammate George Russell went out in Q2 in 11th place. Hamilton acknowledged they were losing time on the straights but with their new design concept not expected to make a difference until Imola in May, scrapping hard for third best once more looks their likely lot in Azerbaijan.

    Verstappen currently leads Pérez by 15 points in the world championship, with Fernando Alonso in third, nine points further back. Leclerc is back in 10th, 63 points off the pace.

    Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz qualified fourth, Alonso and Lance Stroll were sixth and ninth for Aston Martin, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri seventh and 10th for McLaren, while Yuki Tsunoda was eighth for AlphaTauri.

    Esteban Ocon was 12th for Alpine, Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant were 13th and 15th for Williams while Valtteri Bottas was 14th for Alfa Romeo.

    The opening session was interrupted by two red flags, the first when AlphaTauri’s Nyck de Vries crashed out, swiftly followed by Pierre Gasly’s Alpine, both hitting the barriers at turn three. De Vries will start from 20th and Gasly from 19th.

    Alfa Romeo’s Guanyu Zhou was in 16th, with Nico Hülkenberg and Kevin Magnussen in 17th and 18th for Haas.

    Think of fast sports cars and driver. The one name which immediately comes to mind is Michael Schumacher and Formula One Ferrari.

    That Formula One Ferrari which made Michael Schumacher a household name is going to come under the hammer.

    International auctioneer Southeby has announced the auction of Ferrari F1-2000, Chassis 198, as part of its sale to celebrate 50 years of Sotheby’s in Asia, in Hong Kong, between April 3 – 12.

    Schumacher remained world champion from 2000 to 2004 by winning Formula One World Drivers’ Championships five times back-to-back.

    Some credit of his win definitely goes to the Technical Director Ross Brawn’ engineering skills that helped create the unbeatable  Formula One Ferrari.

    Ross Brown played a vital role in the sport of FormulaF1 for four decades. He was behind 16 constructor’s and driver’s world titles.

    Ross Brown spotted Michael Schumacher’s extraordinary driving skills and tied up with him for many successful races. Ross Brown later also became the Managing Director of Formula One.

    A significant role was also played in the team by car engineer and designer South African Rory Byrne who was keen on motor sport.

    The cars designed by him have won ninety-nine Grands Prix, making him one of the most successful Formula One designers.

    The 1998 Formula 1 car  was Byrne’s first design, and the following year the team took the constructors’ crown.

    In 2000, Schumacher became the first Ferrari driver.

    Formula One’s success was helped by the state of the art wind tunnel and unlimited testing which  perfected the car’s performance.

    In 2004 season, Formula One secured 15 victories from 18 races. What was more Schumacher himself as the driver won 13 of them.

    Bryne’s mantra for success was not to bring in some fancy equipment from outside but dedicatedly trying to evolve the existing vehicle by looking at each of its part in detail and improving wherever possible. Thus, trying to slowly change the vehicle bit by bit  to take the best out of it. 

    Bryne was very hard-working with high work ethics  and preferred drawing board over any computer aided design .

    He created the legendary Ferrari F1-2000 which created benchmark as far as its engineering and performance is concerned.

    It had the latest aerodynamics and a redesigned 90-degree V-10 engine that allowed engineers to lower the car’s centre of gravity.

    Ross Brawn felt it was the “best car” made by the group. The F1-2000 won in 11 grand prix.

    Chassis 198, proved vital to the success of Schumacher’s Championship-winning 2000 season.

    In Monte Carlo this car and Schumacher again won which was the last time for Schumacher in a Ferrari at Monaco.

    Once chassis 198’s Ferrari’s career had drawn to a close, in March of 2001, it was displayed at the Geneva Motor Show on Ferrari’s stand.

    It was sold to Ferrari collector Kevin Crowder of Texas. The present owner got the vehicle from Crowder which is clearly  one of the cars from the golden periods of Formula One.

    Italian luxury sports car maker Ferrari has revealed that it received a ransom demand related to customer contact details that may have been compromised in a ransomware attack. In a statement released on March 20, Ferrari said that it immediately began an investigation in collaboration with a leading cybersecurity firm upon receipt of the ransom demand. It also informed the relevant authorities and expressed confidence that they would investigate the incident to the fullest extent of the law.

    While Ferrari did not specify when the attack occurred, it may be related to reports of a ransomware attack in October 2022, when the RansomEXX group claimed to have stolen and leaked 7 GB of data from Ferrari. The car maker denied the claims at the time.

    “As a policy, Ferrari will not be held to ransom as paying such demands funds criminal activity and enables threat actors to perpetuate their attacks,” Ferrari stated. “Instead, we believed the best course of action was to inform our clients and thus we have notified our customers of the potential data exposure and the nature of the incident.”

    The company has contacted its customers via email, informing them that the exposed information includes their name, address, email address, and phone number. Ferrari has not found any evidence that financial information or details on owned or ordered cars have been compromised.

    With one of the most expensive car lineups in the world, a contact list of wealthy customers is very attractive to cybercriminals. They could use the information to customize malicious, targeted emails.

    Ferrari has confirmed that the breach has not affected the operational functions of the company and that it has worked with “third-party experts” to strengthen its system security. The company has not mentioned RansomEXX in its statement, but the ransomware gang has been linked to several other attacks, including those on logistics giant Hellmann Worldwide, software and services firm Tyler Technologies, and others.

    Ferrari’s stance on not paying ransoms is in line with industry best practices, which discourage organizations from funding cybercriminals. However, this can lead to the exposure of sensitive information, which can be damaging to a company’s reputation and lead to potential legal repercussions. As such, it is essential that organizations take steps to secure their systems and protect their data from cyber threats.

    The drivers remained in Bahrain, while the top levels of the Scuderia all returned to Maranello: the enormous amount of data that was collected during the three days of testing in Sakhir had to be analysed, in order to prepare the first Grand Prix in the best possible way season scheduled in Manama.

    Those who expected an agitated first de-briefing after seeing the SF-23 finish in fourth place with Charles Leclerc and fifth with Carlos Sainz in the only collective testing session were probably surprised.

    There is no fibrillation in the Racing Department, except for the little time available before leaving for the Persian Gulf: Fred Vasseur’s comments commenting on the tests were in line with the analysis that was made in… cold in Maranello:
    “To sum up, at the end of the three days I see that the performance is there, but obviously we don’t know much about where the opponents are. I know you’ve gone through all the stints… but you’ll also have seen that we completed a lot of tests with different things. Some worked well right away, some less so. I’m quite happy with what we did in the three days. The most important thing in winter testing is being able to put in the kilometres, because when for some reason you don’t succeed, it’s a disaster.”

    The objective of the tests was not to look for performance, but to understand the SF-23, finding in the long runs the points of fall of the times and the causes that generated the degradation of the tires, more with the C3 than with the C1, two of the three compounds selected by Pirelli to open the 2023 world championship.

    Ferrari has changed the approach to the season: in the race simulations the red has always run with a lot of fuel in the tank. So petrol was a constant, while the variables were ground clearance, suspension stiffness and aerodynamic adjustments. The SF-23 started the runs with at least 80 kg of fuel, also topping up between one stint and another.

    It’s normal that, lapping in these conditions, the drivers had a lot of trouble understanding what the car’s performance threshold is, while Red Bull performed with much more competitive times both in the long runs and in the flying lap. The frowning face of Charles Leclerc on Saturday afternoon in the pit lane expressed an emotional state and dissatisfaction more than words, although David Sanchez, Head of Vehicle Concept, tried to explain to the Monegasque how he will be able to change the red when he goes to serious.

    The systematic work has allowed us to highlight the window in which the SF-23 is able to operate, understanding the minimum heights to avoid the appearance of porposing.

    The hopping, harmful phenomenon measurable at high speeds, was soon limited (but not solved), while the best balance of the car was not found with the introduction of the new Pirelli front tyres, with a more rigid construction useful for reducing endemic understeer.

    The suspicion is that to pursue the efficiency of the RB19 the car was overloaded (the medium-load wing from Canada was used at the rear) and, perhaps, it was necessary to find grip for the tires with a more resistant configuration.

    A new wing was fitted on Saturday morning featuring a mono-pylon strut and a longer chord main profile, as well as less blunt mobile flap struts. A comparison with the Canadian version was envisaged in the plans, but the sudden failure of the DRS control forced the Cavallino technicians to park this solution, returning to the initial one.

    Ferrari has ventured into the minefield of Red Bull which has been suffering for years with a problematic DRS looking for the lightness and aero-elasticity of materials. Maranello, therefore, has become aware of a problem that otherwise would have emerged during the Grand Prix weekend.

    In short, the Scuderia hid a bit, looking with a certain stubbornness for the limits and problems of the red. And at the end of perhaps pedantic work, some results emerged: for the first race weekend, a different adjustment of the rear suspension is needed. By acting on the mechanical part of the SF-23, the right path of development could be found.

    If the modification produces results, then we will see the team sticking to the most efficient aerodynamic configuration, while moving to the more loaded wing if the track’s response is not that of the simulations. Let’s therefore expect a Ferrari capable of having its say in qualifying (in tests the times were achieved with 35 kg of petrol!) and which will try to defend itself in the race pace to limit a gap that has not yet cleared…
