  • IIT-B student’s death: Mumbai Police quiz kin; candle marches in Guj on Feb 19

IIT-B student’s death: Mumbai Police quiz kin; candle marches in Guj on Feb 19

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: A three-member team of Mumbai Police on Thursday met the family members of Darshan Solanki, a student of IIT-Bombay who ended his life on the Powai campus on February 12 – and recorded their statements, a family member said.

The police called on Solanki’s family members at their home in Maninagar on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on Thursday morning and posed various questions pertaining to 18-year-old Solanki’s sudden death.

Simultaneously, several student bodies in Gujarat will hold a peace procession which will culminate with a candle-lit march to pay homage to Solanki, the relative told IANS, but declined to be quoted.

The procession and candle march will be held in Ahmedabad and several other cities of Gujarat between 6.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. on Sunday, he added.

A day before, the distraught family had expressed suspicions of foul play behind the extreme measure taken by Solanki – who hailed from a Dalit family – shocking the educational circles all over the country.

The police had earlier recorded the family’s initial statements and are now questioning other students and hostelites on various aspects, including allegations of caste discrimination, which the IIT-B management has officially denied.

A student body on the campus, Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle-IITB, had issued a detailed statement last Monday pointing at alleged caste discrimination, which the IIT-B has rejected outright.

Meanwhile, Dalit leader and Congress MLA from Vadgam, Jignesh Mevani, on Thursday demanded an investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the death of Solanki.

Mevani told the media in Ahmedabad that the tragic incident involved a Dalit student who got into IIT Bombay after clearing the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) with flying colours.

The Maharashtra government should set up an SIT to probe the incident because the family suspects foul play, Mevani said. The Dalit leader also demanded that the government should pay Rs 50 lakh compensation to the deceased student’s family.

Solanki’s father, Ramesh Solanki, has alleged that his son was harassed by the other students because “we are Dalits”.

“When he visited us during Makar Sankranti, he had complained to his aunt that the other students were harassing him, taunting him that ‘because you are a Dalit, you got an opportunity to study free of cost’,” Ramesh Solanki said.

In a related development, the students of Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalay in Wardha have sent a memorandum to President Draupadi Murmu urging the Centre to enact a ‘Rohith Vemula Act’ to safeguard students from marginalised communities in nationally important institutions of higher learning and end the suicides that are being reported from there, citing the two cases – one each at IIT-B and IIT-Madras this week – and an attempted suicide case in IIT-Madras.

Adani-Hindenburg row: SC agrees to hear fresh PIL of Congress leader on Feb 17

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to hear on February 17 a fresh plea of a Congress leader seeking investigation under the supervision of a sitting apex court judge against the Adani Group of companies in light of the allegations made by the US-based Hindenburg Research.

A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha took note of the submissions of a lawyer, representing Congress leader Jaya Thakur, that the plea needed an urgent hearing.

The bench initially agreed to list the PIL for hearing on February 24 and later decided to hear on Friday after the lawyer pointed out that two other PILs are listed on February 17.

Thakur has also sought a direction for investigating the role of the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and the State Bank of India (SBI) in investing huge amounts of public money in Adani Enterprises.

On Monday, the Centre had agreed to the apex court’s proposal to set up a panel of experts to look into strengthening the regulatory mechanisms for the stock market following the recent Adani group shares crash triggered by Hindenburg Research’s fraud allegations.

The top court seized two petitions alleging exploitation of innocent investors and “artificial crashing” of the Adani Group’s stock value.

LS Secretariat asks Rahul to respond by Feb 15 to notices on remarks on PM Modi

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Lok Sabha Secretariat has asked Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to respond by February 15 to notices given by BJP members regarding his remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the House.

In a letter to Gandhi, dated February 10, the secretariat has asked him to furnish his reply on breach of privilege notices against him by BJP MPs Nishikant Dubey and Pralhad Joshi — also the parliamentary affairs minister — by February 15 for the Lok Sabha speaker’s consideration.

Following Gandhi’s speech in Lok Sabha on the ‘Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address’ on Tuesday, in which he commented on the Hindenburg-Adani issue, Dubey and Joshi had moved the notices against him.

Both the BJP leaders in their notices to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla have alleged that Gandhi’s comments were baseless and that he made “contemptuous, unparliamentary and dishonourable” allegations.

Several remarks made by Gandhi were expunged by the speaker.

Over 17,400 tech employees got fired in Feb globally to date

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: More than 17,400 employees in the tech industry have lost jobs in the month of February globally to date, with many workers in India receiving pink slips amid deepening global macroeconomic conditions.

In 2023 so far, around 340 companies have laid off more than 1.10 lakh employees worldwide, and there appears to be no respite from job cuts.

Major companies which commenced layoffs this month include Yahoo, BYJU’s, GoDaddy, GitHub, eBay, Autodesk, OLX Group and others.

In January, close to 1 lakh of them lost jobs in the month of January globally, dominated by companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Salesforce and others, according to layoff.fyi, a website that tracks job cuts globally.

More than 3,300 tech employees lost jobs daily on average by more than 288 companies worldwide in January alone.

More job cuts are likely coming in days to come amid recession fears.

After firing 11,000 employees in November last year, Meta (formerly Facebook) is reportedly planning to reduce headcount further in its “year of efficiency”.

Aviation giant Boeing is slashing 2,000 jobs in finance and HR verticals this year and the company outsources about a third of those jobs to Tata Consulting Services (TCS) in Bengaluru.

In 2022, over 1,000 companies laid off 154,336 workers, as per the data from the layoffs tracking site Layoffs.fyi

So far, more than 2.5 lakh tech employees have lost their jobs.

  • Telangana: No power interruption for farmers from Feb 11, says Jagadish Reddy

Telangana: No power interruption for farmers from Feb 11, says Jagadish Reddy

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy acknowledged in the Assembly that there was a lack of electricity for agricultural users on Thursday and Friday but promised that starting on Saturday, farmers will receive uninterrupted power 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

State electricity utilities exceeded the previous peak demand of 14,166 MW on March 29, 2022, delivering 14,169 Megawatts on Friday, the day with the greatest peak demand.

He asserted that there would not be a power deficit for the agricultural sector in the next few days because the power companies had started to restore the supply as of Friday afternoon.

“As long as KCR is Chief Minister and the BRS is in power, there will be 24×7 free electricity supply to the farm sector,” the minister stated.

Jagadish Reddy accused the Union government for the 4,000 MW NTPC Ramagundam power plant’s delay, which will cost consumers Rs 9,637.27 crore.

“However, opposition leaders claim that the administration is buying influence by paying high fees. The cost increase is due to the NTPC plant’s delay in completion,” Jagadish Reddy explained. He also chastised the Centre for requiring power companies to use 30 percent imported coal in thermal power plants.

“SCCL provides one tonne of coal at Rs 3,600. That is why the Telangana refused to accept the Centre’s terms and never acquired foreign coal. However, our neighbouring state agreed to the terms and invited bids to purchase the imported coal. The suppliers quoted a price of Rs 40,000 per tonne. The tenders were revoked and re-invited by the neighbouring state. Telangana paid only Rs 3,600 per tonne, although the supplier demanded Rs 24,000 per tonne. As a result, there was no additional cost to our customers. Even BJP-ruled states were opposed to imported coal, Jagadish Reddy said.

  • Giriraj Singh backs celebrating ‘Cow Hug Day’ on Feb 14

Giriraj Singh backs celebrating ‘Cow Hug Day’ on Feb 14

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Backing the Animal Welfare Board of India’s advisory to celebrate ‘Cow Hug Day’ on February 14, Union minister Giriraj Singh on Thursday said that everyone should love cows.

“A very good decision has been taken, cows should be hugged. I welcome the decision of Purushottam Rupala ji’s ministry. We all should love and hug the cow,” the minister said while addressing a press conference here.

Union Minister Sadhvi Niranjana Jyoti has also welcomed the decision saying “33 crore gods and goddesses live within a cow”.

“Cow is considered as our mother and we should embrace them. 33 crore gods and goddesses live within the cow; I thank the honorable minister. The cow gives us milk from birth till death, we drink its milk. The mother who gives birth keeps us in the womb for 9 months, then when we worship her as a mother, then why not the mother cow?,” Sadhvi Niranjana said.

Aiming to celebrate the ‘Vedic tradition’ and the immense benefits a cow possesses, the Animal Welfare Board of India has urged people to celebrate ‘Cow Hug Day’ on February 14 which is celebrated as Valentine’s Day.

“We all know that the Cow is the backbone of Indian culture and rural economy, sustains our life, and represents cattle wealth and biodiversity. It is known as “Kamdhenu” and “Gaumata” because of its nourishing nature like mother, the giver of all providing riches to humanity,” the Animal Welfare Board informed in a statement.

The body said that the Vedic traditions are on the verge of “extinction” due to the progress of western culture.

“The dazzle of western civilization has made our culture and heritage almost forgotten,” the Board stated.

As per the Animal Welfare Board, owing to its immense benefits, hugging cows will bring emotional richness and increase “individual and collective happiness”.

“Therefore, all the cow lovers may also celebrate February 14 as Cow Hug day keeping in mind the importance of mother cow and making life happy and full of positive energy,” the statement added.

This issue with the approval of competent authority and on the direction of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairyin, the statement added.

After the notification, the Uttar Pradesh Animal Husbandry Minister Dharampal Singh also urged people to celebrate ‘Cow Hug Day’, instead of Valentine’s Day on February 14.

Talking to ANI, the Minister said, “On one hand, Valentine’s Day will be celebrated all over the world on February 14, on the other hand, the Animal Welfare Society of India has given another option to those having problems with Valentine’s Day. They can celebrate Cow Hug Day if they want.”

He said that there are many people in India who have a lot of problems with celebrating Valentine’s Day, and for them, the government has declared this day.

“Cow is the mother of the world and it is the only animal in the world whose urine and dung also work as medicine. One can get rid of many diseases with its mere touch, that’s why I would also like that people should celebrate Cow Hug Day instead of Valentine’s Day on February 14,” he further said.

Further talking about Valentine’s Day, he said, “I also feel that Valentine’s Day should not be celebrated because distance should be kept from those things which cause perversion in the society.”
