Kerala farmer goes missing during govt-sponsored trip to Israel; probe launched

Jerusalem: Authorities in Israel have registered a police case against a 48-year-old Kerala farmer, who reportedly went missing in Israel earlier this month while visiting the country on a state government-sponsored trip to study Israeli modern agricultural techniques.

Biju Kurian, a native of Ulikkal panchayat in Kannur district, was part of a 28-member Kerala government’s delegation of farmers, sent to Israel to study state-of-the-art techniques such as hydroponics and precision farming.

On February 17, Kurian reportedly went missing.

Despite Israel’s law enforcement agencies’ best efforts to trace him, Kurian’s whereabouts were not known.

“We have registered a police case against him. He will be deported once we nab him,” an official said.

The delegation, led by Principal Secretary B. Ashok, left for Israel on February 11. The farmers’ delegation left Israel on Sunday without Kurian, they added.

Kurian’s family in Kannur are also clueless about his mysterious disappearance and were making desperate attempts to reach out to him.

Hyderabad: Half-naked farmer from Warangal walks for justice

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: A half-naked farmer hailing from Ponagal village of Warangal district, carried a plough on his shoulder and a rope in his hand on Friday and then walked from Indira Park to the Director General of Police’s (DGP) office here seeking justice from the ruling BRS.

The farmer, Surendar demanded that the Telangana government ensure rigorous punishment to his brother and BRS leaders for cheating him by forging his land documents.

He claimed that if he was found guilty of enacting a show, he may be hanged to death in the centre of the state capital. Surendar alleged that local BRS leaders forged his land documents and pressurizing him to transfer his land in the name of his brother.

Surender bemoaned the lack of police inaction and stated that the law-enforcing authorities took his issue lightly and remained calm. The hapless farmer said if the documents forged by BRS leaders is found to be true, he may be hanged to death in the centre of the city, otherwise the authorities concerned should discharge justice.

When the protesting farmer reached the DGP’s office at Lakdikapul to meet the DGP to apprise him of his woes, the security personnel disallowed him. Outside the DGP’s office, Surendar urged the Governor, Chief Justice of Telangana High Court and the DGP to intervene and solve his issue.

  • Telangana’s farmer suicides have reduced between 2017-2021: Centre

Telangana’s farmer suicides have reduced between 2017-2021: Centre

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Centre acknowledged on Friday that Telangana’s farmer suicide rate has drastically decreased from 846 in 2017 to 352 in 2021.

This was ascribed to a number of state government measures, whereas farmer suicides in BJP-ruled Maharashtra were on the rise and in Karnataka showed little change.

Friday in the Rajya Sabha, MP Narain Dass Gupta asked a question, and on that day, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar presented information about the number of farmer suicides in various States since 2017.

According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Telangana had 846 farmers and cultivators commit suicide in 2017, which subsequently declined to 352 in 2021.

The declaration from the Centre is significant in light of the accusations made by the opposition parties regarding an increase in farmer suicides in the State.

In response to the news, Agriculture Minister S. Niranjan Reddy hoped that the BJP and other opposition parties would refrain from circulating untrue information about farmer suicides and making charges against the State government.

Over the past four years, Maharashtra and Karnataka have continued to have the highest rate of farmer suicides. From 2,426 in 2017 to 2,640 in 2021, the comparable period saw a rise in farmer suicides in Maharashtra.

In Karnataka, the number of farmer suicides increased slightly from 1,157 in 2017 to 1,170 in 2021. The number of farmer suicides in Andhra Pradesh increased from 375 in 2017 to 481 in 2021.

  • Telangana has almost zero farmer suicide, claims BRS’ Palla Rajeshwar

Telangana has almost zero farmer suicide, claims BRS’ Palla Rajeshwar

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Rythu Bandhu Samithi president and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader Palla Rajeshwar Reddy claimed that farmer suicides in the state are almost zero.

Reddy was addressing a press conference along with government whip G Balaraju and MLCs M S Prabhakar Rao and V Gangadhar Goud on Monday.

Praising chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s pro-farmer welfare schemes, Reddy shot down allegations made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Bandi Sanjay who claimed that nearly 10,000 farmers in the state have died by suicide.

On January 27, Bandi Sanjay visited the family of deceased farmer Ramulu at Adloor Yellareddy village in Kamareddy and accused the KCR government of land grabbing.

“Ramulu along with his brother has only 2 acres of land. He has 2 children, one studying in Class 5 and the other in Class 10. The 15-year-old elder boy also works in a bakery nearby. It is sad that the only 2 acres of land he owns have gone into the industrial zone. He fought for it for around 20 days but no one responded. The people and the farmers staged protests. But no one responded and it is unfortunate that Ramulu had to die for it,” Bandi Sanjay said.

Claiming that Bandi Sanjay’s claims are baseless, Palla Rajeshwar Reddy said that BRS has full proof of zero farmer suicides.

“Bandi Sanjay is talking about the increase in suicide whereas, on the other hand, the Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar had told the Parliament that there has been a 400 percent decrease in Telangana ever since its formation in 2014,” Reddy said.

Reddy further said that over 91 percent farmer population have benefitted from the Rythu Bandhu scheme. “This includes small and marginal farmers. Those having 50 acres or more comprised only 0.09%. Also, 81% of farmers belong to the scheduled caste, scheduled tribes and backward classes. Allegations made by the Opposition parties are all baseless and politically motivated,” Reddy concluded.

    [ad_1]

JAMMU, JANUARY 22 (GNS): The Jammu and Kashmir government has launched an ambitious project targetted to revolutionize the food-processing sector and transform the lives of farmers in the UT.

The “UT Level Food Processing Programme for Development of Clusters for Specific Products of J&K” is a Rs 879.75 crore initiative that aims to maximize farmer income and minimize post-harvest losses.

This comprehensive project has been designed to increase the competitiveness of seven identified products across categories in terms of cost, quality, branding, and sustainability within five years. The government is investing in value-addition, logistics, marketing and branding of various Agriculture, Horticulture and livestock products to achieve this goal.

The project will focus on developing 17 districts in J&K with establishment of processing and marketing infrastructure, providing growth and development opportunities to stakeholders and facilitating suitable economies of scale in production and post-harvest activities. The government has allocated a budget of Rs 879.75 crore for the project including a grant-in-aid of Rs 293.25 crore (33.33%) and a debt-equity of Rs 586.50 crore to be raised by entrepreneurs. The project shall create 7030 direct jobs and lead to establishment of 34 enterprises with expected revenue generation to the tune of Rs. 1436.04 crore every year.

“UT Level Food Processing Programme for Development of Clusters for Specific Products of J&K” is one among the 29 projects, which were approved by the Jammu and Kashmir administration after being recommended by the UT Level Apex Committee for holistic development of Agriculture and allied sectors in UT of J&K. The committee is headed by Dr Mangala Rai, Former DG ICAR and has other luminaries in the field of Agriculture, Planning, Statistics and Administration like Ashok Dalwai, CEO NRAA, Dr. P. S Gupta, Former Director, IARI, Additional Chief Secretary, Agriculture Production Department Atal Dulloo besides Vice Chancellors of twin Agriculture Universities of the UT.

The programme will focus on seven products in 17 districts/clusters including Milk for Jammu and Pulwama, Walnut for Kupwara and Kishtwar, Basmati for RS Pura, Samba and Kathua, Vegetables (Conventional/Organic/Exotic & Mushrooms) for Doda, Budgam, Samba and Udhampur, Meat and Poultry for Srinagar and Kathua, Trout for Anantnag and Ganderbal besides Cherry for Ganderbal and Baramulla.

“This project represents a beacon of hope for farmers in J&K, who have been facing challenges such as post-harvest losses that are generally in the range of 15-20 per cent and the wastage of 20 per cent of the total fruit produced due to non-availability of packaging and processing facilities and mismatch between production and post-harvest management.” said Additional Chief Secretary, Agriculture Production Department Atal Dulloo. “The government’s investment in this project is expected to address these issues and help farmers to better price realization and enhancing their income by creating competitiveness across the entire value chain.” he added.

In the next five years, Jammu and Kashmir will have a dynamic food processing, food packaging and storage infrastructure with dedicated support services including farm-level logistics and transportation, marketing infrastructure and cluster branding. This project is a step towards a brighter future for farmers and the food-processing sector in J&K.(GNS)
