Tim Scott’s Capitol Hill fans question his chances in 2024

    [ad_1]

“Tim Scott is going to have a very appealing story and message,” added the Florida Republican, whose 2016 campaign Scott endorsed. “But again, sometimes the environment determines whether that’s what people are looking for. And who knows where we’re going to be a year from now.”

Romney, the party’s 2012 nominee, was more pointed in his assessment of Scott: “The Trump lane, the anti-Trump lane, the more-than MAGA, I don’t think he fits in those things.”

The uncertainty over whether Scott can sell what Romney called “his own vision” sums up his unique place in the potential 2024 field: embodying optimism in a party more prone to elevating partisan fighters and grievance politics. Scott is the unquestionable primary frontrunner among fellow GOP senators who see him harkening back to the Ronald Reagan years — but the party’s base last responded to that tone in significant numbers when Reagan himself was on the ballot.

Still, Scott’s advisers bet that his hopeful authenticity will be his ticket to the Oval Office. Scott, the lone Black Republican in the Senate, talks often about his own life story, as well as his faith. But he’s also doing less and less unscripted talking as he edges closer to a White House campaign launch: Scott recently stopped doing hallway interviews with reporters, often a telling sign of a future presidential candidate looking to more tightly control his message.

While most of his fellow senators expect him to eventually jump in, Scott is keeping his plans close among a small circle of advisers. For now, his colleagues are hesitant to place him in a specific lane — even potential endorsers-in-waiting like Rep. David Schweikert (R-Ariz).

Schweikert praised Scott but said he isn’t sure if voters are looking for what the senator would offer: “Is there a constituency that wants someone conservative but that still believes in the country?” the Arizonan asked in an interview.

Trump’s indictment on charges related to a hush-money payment to a porn actress may yet shake up the GOP primary electorate, carving out space for a less polarizing contender. But for the moment, the Republican electorate is split between two men quite focused on grievance and culture wars: Trump and his chief potential primary rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

As Romney put it: “There are a number of voters who are tired of all the sturm und drang and the anger and the vituperative comments. On the other hand, the base is still with folks who are adept at those things.”

Scott would enter the race as a staunch conservative. The right-leaning group Heritage Action currently gives him an 84 percent on its scorecard, higher than the average GOP senator. He also has an “A” rating from Gun Owners of America, a 100 percent rating from National Right to Life and an “A” from Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America. He’s known as a defense hawk, most recently opposing a measure that cut off approval for the Iraq War. Scott also backed a Ukraine aid package in May.

While Scott supported bipartisan criminal justice reform, he’s voted against several major bipartisan bills in the past two years, including a $550 billion infrastructure package, a gun safety proposal, same-sex marriage protections and last year’s government funding deal.

The South Carolina Republican is perhaps best known for his work on opportunity zones, a bipartisan proposal included in Republicans’ 2017 tax cut law that offered tax breaks to wealthy individuals who invest in certain designated areas. The program was originally designed to boost low-income communities; Scott is expected to tout it, if he ends up running for president.

Although proponents of the program argue it brings an influx of private investment to economically distressed areas, Democrats and academics have dinged opportunity zones as mainly geared to help places that are already gentrifying.

In addition to opportunity zones, Scott’s a big proponent of expanding charter schools and giving parents public money to allow them to pay for tuition at private schools. He also played a central role in police reform negotiations with Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), which fell apart amid disagreements over qualified immunity and other policies. The two have also partnered on anti-lynching legislation, which became law last year, and a law that changed certain sentencing guidelines.

“We’ve worked to do everything from help expand sickle cell anemia funding to working on funding for [historically black colleges or universities],” Booker said. “Obviously, I’ve had frustrations, but in terms of just productivity he’s one of my more productive partners.”

Scott is also getting extra visibility of late as as the top Republican on the Senate Banking Committee. As Congress scrutinizes the failure of Silicon Valley Bank, Scott hasn’t raced to propose any specific policy response.

Instead, he has focused on committee oversight efforts and pressing regulators on what went wrong. He’s blamed the bank’s downfall on the Federal Reserve for supervision lapses and the Biden administration for policies that may have contributed to inflation and rate hikes.

Scott has hosted so-called listening tours in Iowa and South Carolina as he prepares for a potential run, and he’s planning to hold a donor summit in Charleston in April. Even as some Republicans like fellow South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham say that Scott would be a strong vice presidential candidate, his advisers insist that’s not the end goal.

Should he enter the GOP presidential primary, it would be his toughest race to date. Scott’s closest Senate election was in 2016, when he won by about 24 points. Recent 2024 polls show him at only 1 or 2 percent, and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley’s presidential bid is also a complicating factor. Yet Scott’s also proven a prolific fundraiser, with nearly $22 million cash on hand and strong support from Republican donors like Oracle’s Larry Ellison.

“I think they all got a slim chance,” said Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), who has endorsed Trump. “President Trump and DeSantis are the two guys, they would really have to run into a brick wall for somebody else to nudge them out. Now, anything can happen, but that’s the reason you run.”

Zachary Warmbrodt, Brian Faler, Michael Stratford and Natalie Allison contributed to this report.

Fans, supporters throng Patiala jail to welcome soon-to-be-released Navjot Sidhu

    [ad_1]

Patiala: After spending about 10 months in Patiala’s central jail, Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu will walk free on Saturday.

Several Congress leaders and supporters assembled outside the prison to accord the 59-year-old former cricketer a grand welcome upon his release and chanted ‘Navjot Sidhu zindabad’.

‘Dhol’ players have also been arranged by his supporters standing outside the jail to welcome the cricketer-turned-politician.

Speaking to reporters at his residence on Saturday, Sidhu’s son Karan Sidhu said the family has been eagerly waiting for his release from the jail.

He said it had been a tough time for the family but now they were happy to see him coming out of the jail.

Several posters and hoardings of Navjot Sidhu were put up at many places in Patiala city by Sidhu’s supporters to welcome him.

Party workers are quite ecstatic over the release of Sidhu, said one of the supporters outside the jail.

Congress leader and former MLA Navtej Singh Cheema said people of Punjab are waiting for Sidhu to come out of jail.

The former state Congress chief was jailed on May 20 last year after being sentenced to one-year rigorous imprisonment by the Supreme Court over the death of 65-year-old Gurnam Singh in a road rage case in 1988.

Sidhu’s lawyer HPS Varma on Friday had said the release was happening earlier due to Sidhu’s good conduct during imprisonment, as allowed under the rules.

Sidhu’s family had got an intimation from authorities regarding his release from the Patiala jail.

Swiss football fans raise flag of Palestine in match against Israeli team

    [ad_1]

The Swedish fans raised the Palestinian flag during the football match that took place on Wednesday evening, between the Swedish team and the “Israeli team” in the Euro 2024 qualifiers.

The Swiss national team achieved its second victory in the qualifiers, and destroyed the goal of Israel three times, in the match that took place at the Geneva stadium, for the second round of the Group Nine matches of the Euro qualifiers.

Dozens of pictures and video clips of fans flying the Palestinian flag and some banners denouncing the occupation and the policy of apartheid on the stands of the Geneva stadium were spread on social media.

One of the videos showed dozens of fans raising Palestinian flags, while they interacted with the sound of music inside the stadium, as it seemed that it was raised in the face of the Israeli players.

PACBI account on Twitter, which belongs to the Palestinian campaign for the academic and cultural boycott of Israel, which challenges Israeli apartheid, through academic, cultural and sports campaigns, published pictures of Swiss fans raising the Palestinian flag.

The account commented on the photos, saying, “Wonderful, during the Switzerland-Israel match in the Euro 2024 qualifiers, amazing support for the rights of the Palestinians, and against the Israeli apartheid regime.”

He added, “The campaign of solidarity with Palestine and the fight against racism, and the student and sports groups promised to raise the red card in the face of Israeli apartheid, and they did!”

    Previous cases

European countries witnessed similar events when it came to the presence of an Israeli team on their soil, as dozens of people demonstrated around the Tallaght stadium in Dublin, the capital of Ireland, in September 2022, before the start of their national team’s match against “Israel” U-21.

Selena Gomez urges fans to stop sending ‘death threats’ to Hailey Bieber

    [ad_1]

Los Angeles : Actress-singer Selena Gomez has finally broken her silence about her alleged feud with supermodel Hailey Bieber.

On Friday, Gomez took to Instagram Story and shared a message after learning about the immense criticism Hailey has been receiving.

    ANI 20230324131207

“Hailey Bieber reached out to me and let me know that she has been receiving death threats and such hateful negativity. This isn’t what I stand for. No one should have to experience hate or bullying. I’ve always advocated for kindness and really want all of this to stop,” Gomez urged her fans and followers.

Gomez also started following Hailey on Instagram in a show of support.

This isn’t the first time Gomez trying to get fans to stop scrutinizing Hailey, although this is her first time explicitly referring to Hailey by name.

On March 6, Selena thanked fans for their support on her TikTok and added, “Please, please be kinder and consider others mental health. My heart has been heavy, and I only want good for everyone. All my love.”

Reportedly, the feud between Hailey and Gomez started when the Rhode Skin founder appeared to bully the “Heart Wants What It Wants” singer online.

A few months ago, Hailey posted and then deleted a video where she, Kendall Jenner and Justine Skye mouthed the audio, “I’m not saying she deserved it, but God’s timing is always right.”TikTok users surmised that Hailey was referring to Gomez, who, at the time, had just responded to being fat-shamed.

The beef between the two celebrities dates back to 2018 when Hailey Bieber got engaged to Justin Bieber just months after he ended his relationship with Gomez, whom he dated on and off for eight years, for good.

  • Doug Mastriano and his super fans aren’t yet willing to let go

Doug Mastriano and his super fans aren’t yet willing to let go

    [ad_1]

    election 2022 pennsylvania governor 13996

“Doug Mastriano won that election. It was a false election, and I think the people know that it was a false election,” she said as she walked through the parking lot in search of her car following the rally’s conclusion, the harsh mid-March wind hitting her face. “People in Pennsylvania know.”

In a midterm cycle that was disappointing for the GOP across the country, Pennsylvania Republicans were among the biggest losers. Along with Mastriano’s flogging, GOP candidates fell short in the Senate contest and the majority of state House races.

Establishment Republicans have found a silver lining amid the grimness: Perhaps there will be a reckoning. Even diehard supporters of former President Donald Trump, they’ve reasoned, are finally sick of losing.

The Senate GOP’s campaign arm has a new chair, Montana Sen. Steve Daines, who has vowed to wade into primaries in order to nominate candidates who can win general elections. And in Pennsylvania, he is courting Dave McCormick, a former hedge fund CEO who narrowly lost the Senate primary in 2022, to run against Democratic Sen. Bob Casey. McCormick is taking steps to prepare for a possible campaign, including releasing a book Tuesday, launching a new political action committee and attending GOP events in the state recently. In a sign that he’s not joking around about intervening, Daines last week attacked Mastriano as unelectable after news came out that he was considering a Senate run.

But while the moves have given hope to party officials and donors, the testimony of voters like Crowe show just how far the GOP still must go. In this corner of the political world in Pennsylvania, it’s the establishment — not the MAGAverse — that needs course-correction.

“The Senate reelection campaign in D.C. is like, ‘We don’t want Mastriano to run.’ Well, you don’t have a say in that there, fella,” Mastriano told the crowd at his rally over the weekend. “They can’t win any state races without the Walk as Free People movement, right? They can’t win without us. So they better be ginger.”

Mastriano’s rally was part-revival, part-reunion for his fans. Held in a small town in south-central Pennsylvania, it was also a demonstration of what McCormick and his mainstream allies in the party could be up against if he enters the Senate race.

A few hundred people attended the event, where Mastriano promoted a slate of Republicans running for local office this year. In addition to the candidates, speakers included Rep. John Joyce (R-Pa.), Trump lawyer Christina Bobb and conservative media personality Wendy Bell. The main message was that MAGA-ism isn’t dead. The language spoken, however, was conspiracy theories.

    • On the reliability of the 2020 election: “Where are these numbers coming from? Nothing matched. It didn’t work,” said Bobb.
    • On Sen. John Fetterman’s recovery from clinical depression at an in-patient facility: “Do we even know if Fetterman is even alive right now?” asked Lori Phillips, a volunteer for Mastriano who attended the rally.
    • On Covid-19: “China should be held for war crimes, and maybe if our government — if [Anthony] Fauci and all those guys — were involved in it just as much, maybe they should be held for war crimes,” said retiree Larry Haugh, another rally-goer.

In an interview Monday, McCormick said Mastriano would not factor into his decision about whether to run again for the Senate.
“It’s a personal choice,” he said. “It will be based on whether I believe I can win and really contribute as a senator from Pennsylvania. And how other people think about it and what they do is not going to be a primary consideration.”

As he weighs the viability of a Senate run, McCormick also said the GOP must work to increase voter registration and encourage Republicans to vote by mail. In what appeared to be a subtle knock on Mastriano, he added, “I think it’s important we pick candidates who can win the primary and the general, whether it’s for the Senate or for governor or for other races around the country.”

Democrats, who last year elevated Trump-aligned candidates in several GOP primaries in hopes of facing the least formidable opponents possible, are already wading into the nascent Pennsylvania contest. The day before McCormick’s book, “Superpower in Peril: A Battle Plan to Renew America,” was released, the Senate Democrats’ campaign arm put out a document highlighting past attacks against McCormick from fellow Republicans. The same day, a liberal polling firm released a survey showing Mastriano leading McCormick in a hypothetical primary.

In recent weeks, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee officials have had conversations with former campaign consultants for now-Gov. Josh Shapiro, who beat Mastriano last fall. According to a person familiar with the talks, they centered on Mastriano’s strengths in a GOP primary.

At Mastriano’s rally, a number of attendants were skeptical of McCormick.

“He was a RINO in my opinion,” said nurse Joy Whitesel. “He just seemed too rehearsed for me.”

“I hadn’t even heard of him until he announced he was running for office,” said health care worker Rebecca Evans.

But it wasn’t just McCormick who elicited apprehension, but also the political remedies he and other traditional Republicans were pushing in the wake of the 2022 letdown. Though multiple Republican leaders, including Mastriano, have argued that the party needs to embrace mail-in voting, several of the rally-goers were reluctant about going in that direction.

“I don’t agree with mail-in voting because it’s so easy to become fraudulent,” said Whitesel, adding that she wants Mastriano to run for the Senate and isn’t concerned about his electability “because his loss was only by mail-in votes — he won the in-person votes — and he got zero support from the RINOs.”

For McCormick, this all raises tricky questions: mainly, is there an actual path forward to winning his party’s nod, especially with Trump running for the presidency. During last year’s election, McCormick unsuccessfully sought the former president’s endorsement and hired several of his ex-aides. For the time being, he seems to be taking a different tack. Though McCormick applauded Trump’s approach to China and the economy in his book, he also recounted a private conversation in which Trump told him, “You know you can’t win unless you say the election was stolen.”

McCormick said he “made it clear to him that I couldn’t do that. Three days later, Trump endorsed Mehmet Oz” for the Senate.

Asked whether he supports Trump in the presidential primary, McCormick said there are “great people” who are going to run, but that he has not made a decision yet to back any candidate.

“I want to see how the primary goes,” he said. “I also am a strong proponent of hopefully a vision for the future that’s positive — more looking forward than backwards.”

Whether looking forward — not backward — is what GOP primary voters want is less clear.
