Pence: Trump ‘endangered my family’ on Jan. 6

In the days leading up to Jan. 6, 2021, Trump pressured Pence to overturn President Joe Biden’s election victory as he presided over the ceremonial certification of the results. Pence refused, and when rioters stormed the Capitol, some chanted that they wanted to “hang Mike Pence.”
The House committee that investigated the attack said in its final report that “the President of the United States had riled up a mob that hunted his own Vice President.”
With his remarks, Pence solidified his place in a broader debate within the Republican Party over how to view the attack. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, for example, recently provided Tucker Carlson with an archive of security camera footage from Jan. 6, which the Fox News host has used to downplay the day’s events and promote conspiracy theories.
“Make no mistake about it, what happened that day was a disgrace,” Pence said in his Gridiron Dinner remarks. “And it mocks decency to portray it any other way.”
Trump, meanwhile, has continued to spread lies about his election loss. He’s even spoken in support of the rioters and said he would consider pardoning them if he was reelected.
Speeches at the Gridiron Dinner are usually humorous affairs, where politicians poke fun at each other, and Pence did plenty of that as well.
He joked that Trump’s ego was so fragile, he wanted his vice president to sing “Wind Beneath My Wings” — one of the lines is “did you ever know that you’re my hero?” — during their weekly lunches.
He took another shot at Trump over classified documents.

“I read that some of those classified documents they found at Mar-a-Lago were actually stuck in the president’s Bible,” Pence said. “Which proves he had absolutely no idea they were there.”
Even before the dinner was over, Pence was facing criticism for his jokes about Transportation Secretary Buttigieg, the first openly gay Cabinet member in U.S. history.
Pence mentioned that, despite travel problems that were plaguing Americans, Buttigieg took “maternity leave” after he and his husband adopted newborn twins.
“Pete is the only person in human history to have a child and everyone else gets post-partum depression,” Pence said.

Land-for-job scam: Rs 53 L seized during ED raids at Lalu’s family, associates

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has seized Rs 53 lakh in cash, 540 gram gold, gold jewellery weighing 1.5 kg and USD 1900 during raids on the premises of close associates and family of former Railway minister Lalu Prasad in the land-for-job scam.
According to an official of the probe agency, the recoveries were made on Friday from the residences of close associates and family members of Lalu Prasad in connection with the scam.
Raids were conducted at 15 locations including at the Delhi houses of the RJD leader and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejaswi Yadav.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recently grilled former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi and Lalu Prasad in the matter. The ED case is on the basis of the CBI’s FIR.
In its case, the CBI had alleged that the accused in connivance with the then GM Central Railways and CPO, Central Railways engaged persons as substitutes in lieu of land either in their name or in the name of close relatives of Lalu family.
What is the case:
The CBI registered a case against Lalu Yadav, the then union railway minister, his wife Rabri Devi, two daughters and 15 others, including unknown public servants and private persons.
“During the period 2004-2009 Yadav had obtained pecuniary advantages in the form of transfer of landed property in the name of his family members in lieu of appointment of substitutes in Group “D” posts in different Zones of Railways,” the official said.

A number of residents of Patna themselves or through their family members sold and gifted their land in favour of the family members of Yadav and a private company controlled by Yadav and his family.
“No advertisement or any public notice was issued for such appointment of substitutes in Zonal Railways, yet the appointees who were residents of Patna were appointed as Substitutes in different Zonal Railways located at Mumbai, Jabalpur, Kolkata, Jaipur and Hazipur.
In continuation of this modus operandi, about 1,05,292 Sq. feet land, immovable properties situated at Patna were acquired by Yadav and his family members through five sales deeds and two gift deeds, showing the payment made to seller in cash in most of the land transfer,” the CBI has said.

Only KCR’s family got employment in Telangana: Chhatisgarh CM Baghel

Hyderabad: Congress implements programmes to empower the poor in contrast to the BJP’s ‘Gujarat model’ benefitting crony capitalists and the BRS model of ‘family rule’ in Telangana, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said on Thursday.
Addressing a public meeting at Karimnagar in Telangana organised as part of ‘Haath se Haath Jodo’ padayatra undertaken by Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President and party MP A Revanth Reddy, Baghel alleged that both the Telangana government and the BJP-led Centre were indulging in “loot”.
While employment was supposed to have been provided to the unemployed youth in the state, several family members of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao have got posts in the government after BRS came to power in the state, he said.
Addressing the gathering, he said: “You (people) asked for Telangana (statehood) and you got Telangana. But did farmers get price (for their produce). Did youth get jobs? Has unemployment gone?”
“Only one family got out of unemployment — of KCR (as the Telangana Chief Minister is known as). Who is K T Rama Rao (KCR’s son), he also got employment. Who is Harish Rao (KCR’s nephew)? He also got employment. And who is Kavitha ji (KCR’s daughter). It means only one family has got employment and he gave all jobs to his family,” Baghel said ridiculing the Chief Minister’s family.
Referring to party leader Rahul Gandhi’s accusation against Prime Minister Narendra Modi benefitting a “few friends” at the cost of people of the country, Baghel described it as the ‘Gujarat model’.
The ‘Telangana model’ benefits only one family, he alleged.
Modi, after coming to power in 2014, had said Gujarat model will be implemented in the country, Baghel said.

“Did you benefit from Gujarat model? No. You have also seen BRS model which gave employment to one family. But Congress always strengthens common people,” he claimed adding on the other hand, the Congress always works for empowering the poor.
He cited the examples of the previous UPA government at the Centre providing the right to education, right to food, right to work, and right to information.
Baghel spoke on the ‘Chhattisgarh model’ of waiving farmers’ loan soon after Congress assumed power in that state and also highlighted the several schemes launched there, including for farmers.
His government has announced unemployment allowance in the recent budget, he said.
Congress alone can fulfill the objectives for which Telangana was formed and the people should support the party in the next assembly elections, he said.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ led by Rahul Gandhi gave a ‘booster dose’ to the party.
Now, there is a need for a third yatra, after ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ and ‘Haath se Haath Jodo’ yatra, with the message of ‘KCR Harao, Telangana Bachao’ (Defeat KCR and Save Telangana) yatra in the state, he said.
If Telangana has to be saved, then KCR has to be defeated, Ramesh added.
In the last nine years, Telangana has been witness to politics of betrayal, corruption and dictatorship, he alleged.
Describing KCR as the ‘eighth Nizam’, Ramesh alleged there is no difference between BJP and the BRS.
Senior Congress leader and in-charge of Congress affairs in Telangana Manikrao Thakre, party MP Uttam Kumar Reddy were among those who spoke at the meeting.

Hyderabad: Alleging CM K Chandrashekar Rao of misuse of power, Bharatiya Janata Party National Vice President DK Aruna on Thursday claimed that police cases are being registered against those who stand against the KCR-led Bharat Rashtra Samithi government in Telangana.

Aruna said that K Kavitha is staging a protest at Jantar Mantar against the women’s reservation bill on March 10 and here in Telangana, we are also staging a protest at the BJP party office against the “harassment of women” and “ragging of girls” in colleges in the state.
Earlier in the month, Telangana BJP leader N Ramchander Rao said that Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao should protect women in his state before her daughter K Kavitha demanded women’s reservation bill for the country.
“It is very surprising that Kavitha speaks of the women reservation bill in the Parliament while her own father has not given a single ministry to a woman in the first term of his tenure.
How is a woman being respected in this state? The woman governor is being humiliated and harassed by their (BRS) government and she (Kavitha) speaks of women’s reservations” he had said.
Aruna accused CM KCR of maintaining silence on the alleged cases of atrocities against women.
“The government is not taking any interest in the welfare of the women who are facing many atrocities. CM doesn’t speak a word or give assurances to them,” Aruna took a dig at the KCR government.
Telangana BJP leader had stated that the decision to protest outside Jantar Mantar on the women’s reservation bill is just an election gimmick and there is nothing more to it.

“This is all just to woo the women voters who will never believe in the BRS party because the majority of the women have suffered, law and order have deteriorated and atrocities against women have increased in the BRS regime,” he had added.

Kishan Reddy announces Rs 2 lakh for family of child mauled to death by stray dogs

Hyderabad: Union Tourism and Culture Minister G. Kishan Reddy on Monday announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh to the family of a four-year-old boy who was mauled to death by stray dogs in Hyderabad last month.
He visited the residence of Pradeep at Erukula Basti, in Amberpet and consoled his parents.
Kishan Reddy, who is Member of Parliament from Secunderabad constituency, extended financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh from his salary and another Rs 1 lakh on behalf of BJP corporators.
He also announced that he will take care of the expenses for education of Pradeep’s sister.
He urged the Telangana government to bring in necessary amendments to the current policies for a holistic approach to combat growing menace of stray dogs, including shifting of dog sterilisation centers to low population density areas.

Kishan Reddy blamed the negligence of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for the unfortunate death of the child.
The heart-wrenching incident occurred on February 19 in a car servicing centre where the boy’s father Gangadhar was working as watchman.

Pregnant Lady Dies At SKIMS, Family Alleges Medical Negligence

SRINAGAR : Family members of a pregnant lady, who died at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) on Sunday, alleged medical negligence by hospital authorities in the death.
The family members of the deceased woman identified as Ulfat Jan, a resident of Wakura Ganderbal, according to news agency KDC , held a protest at SKIMS Soura against hospital authorities alleging that “She was not given proper treatment which consequently led to her death” this morning.
The relatives of the deceased lady have demanded stern action against the doctors, who they said were supposed to be present.
Medical Superintendent of SKIMS, Dr Farooq Jan said “An enquiry has been initiated in this regard and the committee has been asked to submit the report within five days.
Whosoever will be found involved in any kind of negligence will be dealt with strictly as per law,” Jan added. (KDC)

Social media reunites Sikh family separated at the time of Partition

Lahore: Seventy-five years after they separated during the Partition in 1947, the families of two Sikh brothers met at the Kartarpur Corridor, singing songs and showering flowers on each other in an emotional reunuion made possible through social media.
The families of Gurdev Singh and Daya Singh arrived at the Kartarpur Corridor on Thursday for a reunion.
Emotional scenes of the family reunion were witnessed at Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, Kartarpur Sahib where they sang songs to express their joy and showered flowers on each other.
Both the brothers hailed from Haryana and used to live in Gomla village in Mahendragarh district with their late father’s friend, Karim Bakhsh, at the time of the Partition.
Bakhsh migrated to Pakistan along with elder Gurdev Singh while younger Daya Singh remained in Haryana with his maternal uncle.
After reaching Pakistan, Bakhsh moved to Jhang district of Punjab province, some 200 kms from Lahore, and gave a Muslim name (Ghulam Muhammad) to Gurdev Singh. Gurdev Singh passed away a few years ago.
Muhammad Sharif, son of Gurdev, told the media that over the years his father had written letters to the government of India to find the whereabouts of his brother Daya Singh.
“Six months ago, we managed to find uncle Daya Singh through social media,” he said, adding that both families decided to reach Kartarpur Sahib for the reunion.

He urged the Indian government to give visas to his family members here so that they could visit their ancestral house in Haryana.
Last year, two brothers who separated during the Partition reunited at Kartarpur Corridor.
Muhammad Siddique, 80, from Pakistan and Habib, 78, from India, met in January 2022 at the Kartarpur Corridor. They were also reunited with the help of social media.
The Kartarpur Corridor links Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan’s Punjab province, the final resting place of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev, with the Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Gurdaspur district in India’s Punjab state.
The 4 km-long corridor provides visa-free access to Indian Sikh pilgrims to visit the Darbar Sahib.

Umesh Pal murder: House where Atiq Ahmed’s family lived demolished

Prayagraj: Two days after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that ‘mafia ko mitti mein mila denge (mafia will be finished)’, the Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA), on Wednesday, started demolishing the house of kin of mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed.
Atiq Ahmed along with his wife Shaista Parveen, their two sons and his brother Ashraf, have been named as accused in the Umesh Pal murder case.
The house, located in Chakia under Kareli police station of Prayagraj, is said to belong to one Khalid Jafar where Shaista Parveen was currently residing after Atiq Ahmad’s own house was demolished for having been “illegally constructed” in September 2020 as part of an action against him.
Confirming the demolition, PDA vice-chairman Arvind Kumar Chauhan said, “The house was illegally constructed in violation of set norms and is therefore being demolished. Notice was issued to the owner and all the requisite process was followed.”
The cost of the house is estimated to be around Rs 2.5 crore.
Umesh Pal was a key witness in the 2005 BSP MLA Raju Pal’s murder case in Prayagraj in which Atiq Ahmed and his brother Khalid Azeem besides many close aides are prime accused.
On the evening of February 24, armed men opened fire on Pal and two policemen outside his residence in the Sulem Sarai area of Prayagraj.
Umesh Pal and one of the policemen, Sandeep Nishad, died while another security personnel Raghvendra Singh is critical.

On Monday, the local police eliminated Arbaaz in an encounter for his alleged role in the Umesh Pal murder case. Arbaaz’s link with former MP Atiq Ahmed has come to the fore.
According to police, he worked as a domestic help in Atiq’s house since childhood. Later, Arbaaz worked as a driver for Atiq’s sons.
A police inquiry has revealed that Arbaaz, a resident of the district’s Sallahpur area, drove the car in which assailants reached the spot and fired shots at Umesh Pal and his security guards on February 24.
