Trump family got gifts worth Rs 38.8 L from Indian govt: Report

    [ad_1]

A report filed by the US House of Representatives’ Committee on Oversight and Accountability has revealed that former US President Donald Trump and his family had received over 100 undisclosed gifts worth Rs $250,000 from foreign countries, including India during his term in the White House.

The report, filed on Friday, suggests that the Trump family received 17 undisclosed gifts worth $47,000 (Rs 38.8 lakh) between 2018 and 2021. While 11 gifts were for Trump, the rest were given to his wife and Former First Lady Melania Trump, daughter Ivanka Trump, and son-in-law Jared Kushner.

The gifts include a Makrana marble vase worth Rs 7 lakh, a silk rug worth Rs 5.44 lakh, a bracelet for Rs 2.2 lakh, cufflinks costing Rs 1.5 lakh, and a Taj Mahal replica worth Rs 3.8 lakh, presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Former President Ram Nath Kovind, Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar, former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani as well as present CMs of Uttar Pradesh and Telangana Yogi Adityanath and K Chandrashekar Rao respectively.

    Trump gifts Modi

Describing Modi and Trump’s relationship, the report stated, “The media reported on the “strategic friendship” between President Trump and India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, calling it a “bromance”. In February 2020, CNN summarized the President and First Lady’s “showy state visit” to India as having “plenty of impressive photos but without major announcements on trade or security.”

According to the report, official gifts from foreign countries given to the president and federal officials and their families are required to be registered under the Foreign Gifts and Decorations Act. The minimum value is locked at $415 (Rs 34,254).

Gifts above $415 will automatically become a property of the States.

“The law requires that all foreign gifts over the minimal value be publicly disclosed, regardless of their final disposition. The White House is responsible for compiling and submitting to the State Department a list of gifts given to the President, the Vice-President, and their families by foreign governments,” said the report released Friday.

  • Groom, family walk 28 km for wedding due to drivers’ strike in Odisha

Groom, family walk 28 km for wedding due to drivers’ strike in Odisha

    [ad_1]

Bhubaneswar: A groom and his family members had to walk 28 kilometres to reach the bride’s village in Odisha’s Rayagada district for the wedding, as they could not arrange a vehicle due to the drivers’ strike.

They walked all night on Thursday from Sunakhandi panchayat under Kalyansinghpur block to reach Dibalapadu village where they tied the knot on Friday.

A video showing the groom and his family members including a few women walking at night went viral on social media.

“No transport was available due to the drivers’ strike. We walked all night to reach the village. We had no other option,” one of the groom’s family members said.

The marriage was solemnised on Friday morning. But the groom and his family members stayed at the bride’s house, waiting for the drivers’ association to withdraw the strike so that they can return home.

The Driver Ekta Mahasangh has launched the indefinite strike across the state from Wednesday demanding social welfare measures like insurance, pension, formation of a welfare board and others.

The strike by the drivers of commercial vehicles in Odisha was on Friday put on hold for 90 days following an assurance by the state government that all their demands would be fulfilled.

The announcement by the Drivers’ Ekta Mahasangh came barely a few hours after Chief Secretary P K Jena and DGP S K Bansak appealed to the striking drivers to withdraw the stir.

The strike by over two lakh drivers has hit the normal life for which people including office goers and tourists remained standard at different places. This has also resulted in price rise of essential commodities.

The PWD order asked the occupants to vacate it on or before March 21.

According to the order, the directions were issued in line with provisions of the Delhi Administration Allotment of Government Residences (General Pool) Rules, 1977 that govern such allotments against “the invocation of penal provisions under the rules” if not vacated.

“Where the allottee is already in occupation of any house earlier allotted, the allottee will have to vacate the house within 15 days after taking the possession of the new house allotted in lieu of the previous house. Talking about the order, AAP MP Sanjay Singh said: “Atishi is a minister and the bungalow has been allotted in her name, what is wrong with it? Manish Sisodia is our brother, his family is our family, we will take care of him. The BJP is treating Sisodia like a terrorist… the party should not play games.”

Meanwhile, BJP’s IT in-charge Amit Malviya said: “Kejriwal had promised to look after Manish Sisodia and his family. But he was removed as minister almost immediately, while Satyendar Jain was retained as minister for nine months when he was in jail. Missing Man Found Dead In Srinagar, Family Alleges Murder

    [ad_1]

    Rehan Qayoom Mir

Srinagar, March 15 (GNS): A 28-year-old man was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Tengan Nowgam area of Central Kashmir’s Srinagar district early this morning.

As the body of Suhail Rehman Beigh reached his residence in Nawab Bazar Srinagar this evening, a pall of gloom descended the entire area.

Family members of Suhail are demanding justice for his alleged “murder”. “He was a 28-year-old married man with two children.

They said Suhail dropped his father near Habba Kadal in Srinagar on Monday, and soon after he went missing.
“In the morning, we were shocked when we saw his photographs circulating on social media.”

He was riding a scooty vehicle, and that vehicle is still unknown, they said. “Also an employee from the bank came to us and informed us that he also visited their branch.”

Suhail’s wife also informed GNS that she was at her home when she received the shocking news. “His phone was switched off for two days, and I was very worried and tense about his whereabouts. My husband was a kindhearted man,” she said.

“We would like to request the administration and all the concerned officials to investigate this matter on a priority basis and give us justice,” she added.

When contacted, a police officer told GNS that the body had recovered under mysterious circumstances and also had an injury mark. Investigation in this regard has been initiated, the officer added.(GNS)

  • Land-for-job scam: Delhi court grants bail to Lalu, family

Land-for-job scam: Delhi court grants bail to Lalu, family

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court granted bail to RJD leader and former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad, his wife and former Bihar chief minister Rabri Devi and their daughter Misa Bharti in connection with a case related to the alleged land-for-job scam.

The family appeared before Special Judge Geetanjali Goel around 11 a.m.

The 74-year-old former railway minister reached the court on a wheelchair around 10 a.m. A huge number of RJD supporters gathered outside the court as Lalu appeared in the land-for-job scam case.

During the hearing, the Judge Goel noted that the CBI had filed its charge sheet without arrest.

The court, however, granted bail and directed every accused to furnish Rs 50,000 personal bail bond.

The bail plea was not opposed by the CBI.

    More details are awaited.

The court had on February 27 issued summons to them in the case which concerns alleged appointments made in the Railways in exchange for land parcels given or sold to Lalu Prasad’s family while he served as the Union Railway Minister from 2004 to 2009.

In its charge sheet, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said that irregular appointments had been made in the Railways, in violation of the standards and guidelines established by the Indian Railways for hiring.

It is alleged that the candidates gave Lalu Prasad’s family members land at extremely reduced prices — up to one-fifth of the going market rates — directly or through their close relatives and family members.

The CBI had filed the charge sheet in the case on October 10, 2022, against 16 persons including Lalu Prasad’s wife Rabri Devi and daughter and sanction was then obtained to prosecute them.

Special Judge Geetanjali Goel of Rouse Avenue Courts had on February 27 observed that, prima facie, the on-record report shows that offences have been committed under different sections of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Taking cognisance of the said offences, the judge then summoned the accused persons.

Centre opposes same-sex marriage, says, ‘Can’t be compared to Indian family concept..’

    [ad_1]

The Central government on Sunday opposed pleas in the Supreme Court over the recognition of same-sex marriage.

In a counter affidavit over the pleas, the Centre stated that decriminalising Section 377 IPC “cannot give rise to a claim to seek recognition for same-sex marriage”.

One petition, among the batch seeking the right to marry a person of one’s choice to be extended to LGBTQIA+ citizens, was filed by two gay men living in Hyderabad Supriyo Chakraborty and Abhay Dang.

It countered that living together of persons in same-sex relationships “cannot be compared to the Indian family concept of a husband, a wife and children born out of the union.”

The Centre added that the statutory recognition of marriage is limited to heterosexual in nature and is the norm throughout history and is foundational to both the existence and continuance of the State.
