Five awarded capital punishment for killing family suspecting them of practising black magic

    [ad_1]

Chaibasa: A local court on Wednesday awarded capital punishment to five persons in a case of triple murder that took place over a year ago due to suspicions that they were involved in witch craft.

The principal district and session Judge Vishwanath Shukla convicted the five and sentenced them to death for slitting the throats of a person named Salim Dhanga, his wife Belangi and their daughter Rahil at Podongair village on November 8, 2021.

The village is in Bandgaon police station limits in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district.

The court held the five – Markas Dahanga, Iliyas Dahanga, Kemba Dahanga, Daud Dahanga and Iliyas Dahanga alias Banka Banku guilty of killing the three victims and burying their bodies in the banks of Karo river to conceal evidence.

Few days before the incident Markas Dahanga had lost his daughter to an illness. His friends, however, convinced him that the girl had died due to the black magic practiced by his neighbour Salim Dhanga and his family. Markas then along with his accomplices killed the three in their house and buried the bodies, district superintendent of police Ashutosh Shekhar said.

  • A moment that changed me: I fled Ukraine with my ex’s family as the Russians invaded

A moment that changed me: I fled Ukraine with my ex’s family as the Russians invaded

    [ad_1]

It was February 2022. Life was going pretty well. I had an apartment with views across Kyiv and I was sketching out a new project as an illustrator. I had finally ended an unhealthy long-term relationship. Yes, I thought. This will change everything!

My mother and I went on a last-minute holiday to Zanzibar. We left on 15 February, the day the Russians had initially planned to invade. Before we left, there was talk of war, but I didn’t take it seriously. Beautiful Zanzibar made it seem even less likely. We flew back on 23 February. The flight attendant was strict about telling us to wear our face masks. Surely, if everyone was worrying about face masks, then they weren’t thinking about war?

I went back to my flat with its view of the city. It was a bright and sunny day – but that night, the ravens came. I was woken up by explosions. I went out on to my balcony hoping it was just fireworks. It wasn’t. I shut myself in the bathroom, Googling “war”, but there was nothing in the news.

What I did next was instinctive: I took my Zanzibar suitcase, added some entirely impractical things such as incense, crystals and three vintage Laura Ashley dresses. Then my ex-boyfriend picked me up in his car. I am still so touched that he did that, considering how we had parted. It seemed right that we should be together.

Kyiv was the target, and it made sense to get out, but there were traffic jams everywhere and the queues for petrol were ridiculous. We spent the next 24 hours in the car. At Vinnytsia, about 170 miles from Kyiv, we saw bomb sites and destruction. We made it to western Ukraine, where we stayed with my ex-boyfriend’s relatives. It was decided then that all the women, children (and cats) should go abroad. It was forbidden for men to cross the border.

Imagine the company: my almost-mother-in-law (who was still furious with me), her daughter-in-law and my almost-sister-in-law, who pitied me for putting my efforts into drawing instead of starting a family. In other words, we had little in common.

Together with two children and a couple of cats, we crossed the Romanian border on 28 February. It was amazing that we reached our destination at all, given how little driving experience we had between us.

We stayed in a house that had been empty for 20 years. It was extremely cold. We had to heat up an ancient stove with wood that we collected, and the toilet flooded every time it was flushed. I swear the house was haunted.

We changed places and countries. My almost-sister-in-law showed her gratitude to the people who hosted us by cleaning their houses. I did my best to help her. What else could we do?

Eventually, we ended up in a little Austrian town called Marchegg. We didn’t know the people, but they opened their arms to us. Later, they even helped me find a place for my mother and sister to stay. Until then, they had camped in a basement. My almost-sister-in-law continued to clean while I got on with my work. I now see that this was her way of dealing with stress. We haven’t become friends, but we’ve become something like good allies.

My sadness over the breakup dissolved under the weight of war, at least for a couple of months. I was working hard on my new book, trying to embrace the opportunity. Strangely, it helped calm me down. Drawing has always been my therapy.

After a couple of months, my ex was able to leave Ukraine and come to Austria. While I was happy that he was safe, it meant living together under one roof again. Soon, we were locked in the same impossible relationship. I was making the final changes to the illustrations for the book. I finished the project, then mentally crashed and hit rock bottom.

Long story short: a psychologist helped me process everything. I feel more stable than ever. My ex is happy with another woman, and I am finally free to see what the future holds. I haven’t suffered as much as millions of other Ukrainians. The war heightened my inner issues, but escaping it helped me heal.

Tesla crash: Indian-American who drove family off cliff pleads not guilty

    [ad_1]

New York: An Indian-American, who was accused of deliberately driving his Tesla off a California cliff with his wife and children inside, has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder.

Dharmesh A. Patel, 41, of Pasadena has been charged with “attempted first-degree murder and child abuse, as well as enhancements for great bodily injury and domestic abuse”.

Appearing before a Redwood City courthouse last week, Patel, a radiologist at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Los Angeles, entered his not-guilty plea.

If convicted on the three counts of murder charges, Patel could get a life sentence in prison.

According to The New York Post, Patel has tapped a prominent California attorney, Joshua Bentley, to defend his case, and has a preliminary hearing scheduled for March 20.

San Mateo District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said that statement from Patel’s wife as well as witness accounts from other motorists and video of the roadway gave enough evidence to frame charges against him.

A San Mateo judge had ordered to hold Patel without bail at the Maguire Correctional Facility, citing the danger he poses to his family.

Patel’s car was travelling south on State Route 1 on January 2 when it went over a 250-foot cliff at Devil’s Slide, south of the Tom Lantos Tunnels, and flipped and landed on its wheels near the water’s edge.

Firefighters had to cut the vehicle to pull Patel’s two children — a seven-year-old girl and a four-year-old boy — from the vehicle. The daughter suffered a serious injury, while the boy escaped with just bruises.

The couple was pulled out of the vehicle’s windows.

Investigators are yet to establish Patel’s motive behind the act.

“We’re looking into what led up to this. Was there depression or anything else? It wasn’t just that he was trying to kill them, he was trying to kill himself too,” Wagstaffe had said in a late January press conference.

Patel has been ordered not to contact his wife or their children.

Turkey earthquake: 19-yr-old woman saves her family from being crushed

    [ad_1]

The presence of mind of a 19-year-old woman from the Turkish city of Antakya, saved her entire family from being crushed under the rubble of the two powerful earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria on Monday, February 6, killing more than 26,000 people.

Umit Aslanoglu, got up from bed when her dog “Suzi” got restless and barked into the corridor at night.

Aslanoglu, who felt the first tremor of the earthquake within seconds, immediately woke up her mother, brother and aunt, according to Anadolu Agency.

Meanwhile, seeing the surrounding buildings destroyed, Aslanoglu jumps from the balcony onto the piles of rubble to help her brother and aunt to get out of the house.

As the building shakes with the aftershocks, she returns to save her mother and dog at great risk of her own life.

“At that time, the building already fell on us. The piles of rubble hit my waist. I pushed the rubble somehow, I got up. Our only way out was jumping from the balcony,” she told Anadolu.

The family managed to escape to the northern province of Trabzon, where they sought shelter at a relative’s house.

More than 27,000 people were killed and 85,000 injured in two powerful earthquakes that rocked southern Turkey Monday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday.

Search and rescue efforts continue in areas where people were pulled alive from the rubble after the earthquakes that lasted for more than 100 hours.

Turkey earthquake: Indian national’s death leaves family in shock in Uttarakhand

Dehradun: The family of Vijay Kumar, who died in the earthquake in Turkey, is in shock.

A resident of Kotdwar in Uttarakhand, Vijay Kumar was on a business trip to Turkey when the earthquake struck. His mortal remains were found and identified among the debris of a hotel in Malatya. He left Kotdwar on January 23.

Kumar’s family members were in deep shock as they came to know of the tragic news. They cried inconsolably. Neighbours and relatives came to Kumar’s residence to express their condolences.

Vijay Kumar is survived by his mother, wife, and six-year-old child. He had lost his father about one-and a half months back.

The Indian Embassy in Turkey informed on Saturday that mortal remains of Kumar have been found.

“We inform with sorrow that the mortal remains of Shri Vijay Kumar, an Indian national missing in Turkiye since February 6 earthquake, have been found and identified among the debris of a hotel in Malatya, where he was on a business trip,” the Embassy said in a tweet.

“Our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. We are making arrangements for the earliest possible transportation of his mortal remains to his family,” it added.

“There are 10 individuals who are stuck in some remote parts of the affected area but they are safe. We have one Indian national missing, who was on a business visit to Turkey’s Malatya. And he has not been traced for the last two days. We are in touch with his family and the company in Bengaluru,” Sanjay Verma, Secretary (West) in Ministry of External Affairs, had said at a media briefing on ‘Operation Dost.’

The death toll from the earthquakes stood at more than 25,000 across southern Turkey and northwest Syria, reports said.

  • Why are they ashamed of using Nehru surname, PM Modi targets Gandhi family members

Why are they ashamed of using Nehru surname, PM Modi targets Gandhi family members

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched a frontal attack on the Gandhi family members asking why they were ashamed of using the Nehru surname even as he criticised Jawaharlal Nehru as well as Indira Gandhi for repeatedly using Article 356 to topple state governments led by non-Congress parties.

He targeted the Congress on the issue of federalism, saying the Congress dispensations including those led by former prime ministers Nehru and Gandhi used Article 356 of the Constitution at least 90 times to topple state governments of many regional outfits.

Modi alleged that Indira Gandhi alone used Article 356 to topple governments of regional parties in states as many as 50 times.

He questioned parties such as the DMK, TDP and Left and the NCP of Sharad Pawar for aligning with the Congress which had in the past toppled their governments.

Replying to a debate on the motion of thanks on the President’s address, Modi said, “I had read in some newspaper, I have not verified it, but a report said as many as 600 government schemes are only in the name of Gandhi-Nehru family.”

He said if Nehru’s name is not mentioned, some people get upset and their blood boils. They ask why Nehru’s name is not mentioned.

“…if Nehru ji’s name is left out by us, we would correct our mistake as he was the first prime minister of the country. But I do not understand why anyone from his clan is afraid of keeping Nehru surname? Is there any shame in having the Nehru surname? What is the shame? When the family is not ready to accept such a great personality, why do you keep questioning us,” he said.

His attack was targeted at Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Sonia Gandhi.

Modi delivered his 90-minute speech amidst the Opposition members shouting for a probe by a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) into allegations raised against the Adani Group by the US-based Hindenburg Research firm.

Responding to charges that his government was not cooperating with states, Modi said he was a chief minster before becoming the prime minister and he understood the importance of federalism.

“I have come here after being the chief minister of a state for long. I fully understand the importance of federalism. And that’s why we have emphasized on cooperative, competitive federalism.”

The prime minister asked political parties to compete, cooperate and move forward in the same direction.

“We have taken care of national progress in our policies and have addressed regional aspirations. The perfect combination of national progress and regional aspiration is reflected in our policies and we all move forward to fulfil the dream of a developed India by 2047,” he said.

He, however pointed out that MPs who are sitting in the opposition today had taken away the rights of states.

“I just want to expose them. Take a look at the history and see, which party was it, who were the people in power who misused Article 356 the most and toppled elected governments 90 times. Who are the ones who did it,” he said.

Modi said a prime minister used Article 356 as many as 50 times, hit half a century and the premier’s name was Indira Gandhi.

“Those who are standing with them in Kerala today, just remember, Left government was elected in Kerala which Pandit Nehru did not like. The first elected government was sent home within a short span of time. Today you are standing there, just remember what happened to you,” he said.

He also sought to remind the DMK that the governments of stalwarts like M G Ramachandran and M Karunanidhi in Tamil Nadu were also dismissed by the same Congress.

“MGR’s soul must be watching where you are standing. Sitting here is the senior member of this House whom I always consider a respected leader, Mr. Sharad Pawar. Sharad Pawar ji was 35-40 years old in 1980. A young chief minister went out to serve his motherland, his government was also toppled, today he is there,” Modi said.

He further said the Congress harassed every regional leader, including N T Rama Rao and M G Ramachandran.

“Some people here must have changed clothes, names…after being advised by astrologers. but they were also with them at one time. NTR government was sought to be toppled at a time when he had gone to America for health check-up. This was the level of Congress politics,” Modi said.

Modi did not stop his tirade against the grand old party.

Every newspaper used to write that the Raj Bhavans were converted into Congress offices and headquarters of the Congress, he stressed.

In 2005, the NDA had more seats in Jharkhand but the Governor called the UPA to form government. In Haryana in 1982, the BJP and Devi Lal had a pre-poll agreement, but the then governor invited the Congress to form the government.

This is the Congress’s past and today it is trying to mislead the country, Modi added.
