Families of Sisodia, Jain yet to vacate official bungalows: Sources

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The families of former Delhi ministers Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain were yet to vacate their official bungalows, sources said on Tuesday.

Sisodia and Jain had been asked to vacate the bungalows on or before March 21, according to a letter by the Public Works Department dated March 14.

Weeks after their resignation from the Delhi Cabinet, their bungalows were allotted to newly inducted ministers Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj.

The PWD also asked Atishi and Bharadwaj to give their acceptance within eight days of the issuance of the letter. There was no official word on the matter from the government.

Sisodia had been staying at the AB-17 bungalow on Mathura Road, which was earlier with former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit.

The bungalow was allotted to Sisodia in 2015 when the AAP came to power in Delhi.

Jain was staying at the 2, Raj Niwas Marg, Civil Lines bungalow, which has now been allotted to Bharadwaj.

Following the resignations of Sisodia and Jain, currently in Tihar jail in cases corruption and money laundering respectively, two Cabinet berths had fallen vacant.

Their resignations were accepted by the President on March 7.

Atishi and Bharadwaj were later inducted into the Cabinet.

Sisodia was arrested by the CBI on February 26 in connection with alleged corruption in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy for 2021-22. Jain was arrested the Enforcement Directorate last year in a money laundering case.

  • Biden mourns with families of California shooting victims and moves to close gun loophole

Biden mourns with families of California shooting victims and moves to close gun loophole

    [ad_1]

    biden guns 46756

His remarks framed what the White House portrayed as a significant advance in gun safety, an executive order intended to move the U.S. as close to universal background checks as possible without additional legislation.

The executive action directs Attorney General Merrick Garland to close a gray area in existing gun sales laws that have allowed some vendors to operate without conducting background checks. The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which Biden signed into law last summer, requires anyone who sells firearms for profit to run background checks. Garland will be tasked with defining who qualifies as a gun dealer.

“It’s just common sense to check whether someone is a felon, a domestic abuser before they buy a gun,” Biden said.

Among other directives, the executive order asked Biden’s Cabinet to focus on public awareness campaigns around red flag laws and safe gun storage and encouraged the Federal Trade Commission to publish a report on how manufacturers market firearms to adults and minors. The action also calls for his administration to speed up the implementation of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.

The president’s move comes as state leaders renewed calls for federal action amid a violent start to 2023, which has already witnessed 164 victims in 110 mass shootings — incidents where at least four people are shot.

“I know what it’s like to get that call,” Biden told the crowd on Tuesday. “… I know what it’s like to lose a loved one so suddenly. It’s like losing a piece of your soul.”

While the White House has made historic strides on gun policy, the flurry of mass shootings this year has spurred a renewed pressure campaign from gun safety advocates. Now with a split Congress, gun safety groups have said Biden has a responsibility to roll out further reform. Advocates have pushed administration officials on Tuesday’s executive order for months.

Biden used his speech to re-up his calls for lawmakers to take further action on gun violence.

“Let’s be clear: None of this absolves Congress from the responsibility of acting,” he said. “Pass universal background checks. Eliminate gun manufacturer immunity and liability. And I’m determined, once again, to ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines.”

Two of the three deadliest mass shootings this year have taken place in California, according to the Gun Violence Archive, despite the state having some of the country’s strictest firearm policies and a gun death rate 37 percent below the national average. Just days after the Monterey Park shooting, a disgruntled worker killed seven people at a mushroom farm in rural Half Moon Bay.

In the case of the Monterey Park shooting, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna has said the semi-automatic handgun used by the 72-year-old gunman was most likely acquired illegally.

State leaders nationally have also said more needs to be done at the federal level in light of a Supreme Court ruling in June that struck down New York’s concealed carry law. That has given rise to subsequent challenges to state gun laws, including California’s longstanding ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and a provision barring 18-to-20-year-olds from buying semi automatic weapons.

After Tuesday’s speech, Biden was scheduled to meet with first responders and victims’ families as he has done so many times before in the wake of a mass tragedy. He’ll once again be surrounded by immense grief, just as he was in Uvalde, Texas, and Buffalo, N.Y., less than a year ago.

But he ended Tuesday’s remarks with a line of hope. It’s a piece of advice he’s shared with other survivors and family members along the way — something he draws from his own experiences with grief.

“It takes time, but I promise you,” Biden said. “I promise you, the day will come when the memory of your loved one will bring a smile to your lips before it brings a tear to your eye.”

Opposition misguiding war widows on scheme for martyrs’ families: Ashok Gehlot

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Sunday defended the benefits reserved for the martyrs’ families under a state scheme saying that the BJP leaders are misguiding the people and maligning the image of Rajasthan.

“The kind of package given by Rajasthan government to the war widows, be it of the Pulwama, Balakot, or Kargil, doesn’t exist anywhere in the country. I had brought the package when I was chief minister around 25 years back,” Gehlot told reporters after attending a programme.

He said that under the package the martyrs’ families are allotted land and housing, schools are named after martyrs, and jobs are kept reserved for their children.

The Chief Minister’s remarks came on the heels of a protest being waged by three war widows, who have been demanding a change in rules so that their relatives and not just children can get government jobs on compassionate grounds.

“Why are they asking for jobs after four years? The incident happened in 2019 but there was no demand then and now suddenly after four years the issue is raised. They (BJP leaders) are misguiding the people and maligning the image of Rajasthan,” Gehlot on Sunday said.

“If they (BJP leaders) continue to act in such a manner, then people will give them a befitting reply. We are giving a good package to martyrs’ families. How can they ask for jobs for someone else other than the children,” he said.

The CM said that he had met the war widows on Saturday who said they want jobs to be reserved for their children.

  • Artists Displayed How Timely and Better Tankha Binds Families

    [ad_1]

    by Maleeha Sofi

SRINAGAR: It is something that is basic to almost everybody – Tankha, the salary. It is always a matter of concern for everybody working for the government or private sector. This was the theme of the fourth play in the ongoing Theatre Festival Kashmir 2023. The play is written by Rashid Gamgeen and presented by Dilshad Cultural Forum.

    tankha 1
A group photograph of artists who performed the theatre play, Tankha (salary) in the Cultural Academy’s Theatre Festival in Tagore Hall in March 2023. KL Image: Bilal Bahadur

As the curtain raised, a farmer offered greetings to everyone. The man was worried about the barren land and chose to work on it to make it fertile again. A woodcutter, a Hindu, and a Sikh joined him.

Everyone asked him about what he was doing there and shared it. They all mutually intend to follow the path of brotherhood to bloom the barren land and they dance together. This segment was the opening and the actual play followed later.

Tankha revolves around a family of four, Mohammad Amin, Maimoona, and their two kids Zamrooda and Tariq. The scene starts with a small house set up and a lady – Maimoona ranting about the miseries she faces all the time with respect to her work, lack of resources, and inability to live a better life. Her husband, Mohammad Amin who works on an honorarium basis returns from his work and questions her behaviour. She complains about his little salary of Rs 3000, jammed salary of two months and not fulfilling any of her demands. They get into an argument while both of them complain about their problems.

In another scene, an office with some clerks is shown where Mohammad Amin works. All of them have faced the same issue in their homes. They talk about the debt, load of work, less salary, corruption, and apart from all this the misunderstanding that people have about them having huge amounts of money. They even consider business is better than their job.

At home, when Mohammad Amin offers prayers and asks for respite from debt, a voice responds to him saying that might is right and he should not follow the right path always. He gets scared about this suggestion and asks him where the voice is coming from. The voice replies, “I am your soul.” This scene somehow shows a person’s fight with himself to follow the righteous path at a time when choosing the wrong one can resolve your problems.

The debtors frequently visit Amin’s home asking for their money. The couple assures them of returning it soon. As soon as Amin gets his salary of two months, he distributes it among the debtors and the rest to his children for some school activities. The whole salary goes into it and the couple gets into the argument again. Maimoona has to attend her brother’s wedding and she demands certain things for it.

Mohammad Amin fell ill and had a high fever. His wife doesn’t believe it at first, but later on, seeing the condition worsening, she believes. Amin gives her the money and things she demanded. Maimoona was shocked after knowing that Amin had sold his watch and scooter. He had done it out of love for her wife as she used to fight and cry over the issue. She feels bad about it and the couple gets emotional.

The play shows the efforts put in by such employees to meet the ends of their families. He suggests his children opt for government school instead of private but they refuse by giving the reason that everyone goes to private schools. His wife also timely compares herself to neighbouring ladies and their lifestyle. It shows the reality that people instead of focusing on rightly managing their lifestyle compare with other people and add to the miseries.

The play is written by Rashid Gamgeen, presented by Dilshad Cultural Forum, directed by Dilshad Mustafa, assistant direction by Akash G.M Bahar, and set designed by Saleem Yousuf. The cast line included Mukhtar Ahmad as Mohammad Amin, Shahida Alvi as Maimoona, Ghulam Mohammad Bahar as Bilal, Mohammad Yousuf Dar as Akram, Ali Mohammad Mir as Hilal, Aamir Ahmad Malik, Tasaduk Hussain, and Sajad Hussain as debtors, Mohammad Yousuf Ganie as Dervish, Ghulam Hussain Hak Nawaz as his assistant, Shazia Akhter as Zamrooda and Munawar Ali as Tariq.

Gehlot announces relief of Rs 5 lakh each for families of Junaid, Nasir

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday announced a relief package of Rs 5 lakh each for families of Junaid and Nasir, whose charred bodies were found in Haryana’s Bhiwani district after they were abducted from Bharatpur.

“The state government will provide Rs 5 lakh compensation each to the wives and children of both the deceased. An amount of Rs 1 lakh each will be provided as cash whereas a fixed deposit of Rs 4 lakh each will be done so that the dependent families do not face any problem in the education and marriage of the kids,” he told reporters.

The chief minister had met the family members of Junaid and Nasir at a temporary arrangement made near a helipad in Ghatmeeka village.

He was accompanied by Tourism Minister Vishvendra Singh, Minister of State for Education and local MLA Zahida Khan, Congress state unit chief Govind Singh Dotasra, Chief Secretary Usha Sharma and DGP Umesh Mishra.

Nasir (25) and Junaid alias Juna (35), both residents of Ghatmeeka village in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan, were allegedly abducted by cow vigilantes on February 15 and their bodies were found inside a burnt car in Loharu in Bhiwani in Haryana on the morning of February 16.

Nasir is survived by his wife, while Junaid is survived by his wife, six children and a mentally challenged brother.

Gehlot also said that he will talk to his Haryana counterpart Manohar Lal Khattar to take the incident with utmost seriousness as it is of similar nature to the incident that happened in Udaipur where a tailor was hacked to death.

He said his government is committed to arresting the accused at the earliest and submit the charge sheet. Such a crime deserves nothing less than death penalty, he said.

A total of nine accused, including Bajrang Dal member Monu Manesar who runs a cow protection group, and Srikant Pandit, whose mother lodged a complaint against the Rajasthan Police, have been named in the case so far.

The accused have been booked under sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 365 (kidnapping), 367 (grievously hurt after kidnapping) and 368 (wrongfully keeping in confinement) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Two more IPC sections — 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) — were later added, police said.

Junaid had a criminal record of cattle smuggling and five cases were registered against him at different police stations, they said.

Telangana: Over 90k farmer families receive Rs 4.8 crore under Rythu Bima

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Over 97,913 farmers in the state have received nearly Rs 4,896 crore under the Rythu Bima, Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari said here at a review meeting with the agriculture department at BRKR Bhavan on Wednesday.

The Rythu Bima or Farmers Group Life Insurance Scheme is a welfare scheme introduced by the KCR government in 2018. It provides financial relief and social security to farmers or their relations in cases of farmer deaths. Farmers between the age group of 18-59 years can avail the insurance.

In the meeting, it was revealed that around 65 lakh farmers had received Rs.65,191 crore under the Rythu Bandhu welfare scheme.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Secretary said that many agricultural goals were achieved after the state was formed.

“The goal of one crore acres of Magani has been achieved due to pro-agricultural policies. Schemes such as the Rythu Bandhu, Rythu Bima, 24-hour electricity supply, purchase of agricultural produce, have given a big boost to farmers,” she said.

“During Vanakalam and Yasangi season, paddy is cultivated in a total of one crore twenty lakh acres of land statewide. After paddy, cotton is grown on 56.37 lakh acres of land. Telangana is second and third in rice and cotton production respectively,” she remarked.

On the sale of fake seeds to farmers, she said that the government has taken appropriate steps to deal with the issue. “As many as 551 people have been arrested and 347 cases have been registered. Out of these, 16 people have been booked under the PD Act and 11,872 quintals of fake seeds have been seized,” she informed.

To educate farmers on new agriculture tools and technologies, a special steering committee has been formed under the Chairmanship of the Chief Secretary has been formed.

The Chief Secretary also suggested that horticulture should be encouraged among the farming community to grow more vegetables.

On the sale of adulterated oils, the Chief Secretary asked officials to take stricter steps to curb the menace.

UK mulls immigration curbs on foreign student families

    [ad_1]

London: International students are likely to be restricted from bringing their spouses and children to the UK unless they study “high-value” degrees under government plans.

According to The Times, foreign students granted visas to study science, mathematics, and engineering can relocate to the UK with dependants.

A near-eightfold rise in the number of family members joining foreign students has left Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Home Secretary Suella Braverman worried.

According to new immigration figures, 490,763 students were given visas last year.

They were accompanied by 135,788 dependants — spouses and children — up from 16,047 in 2019.

Of these, India became the largest source of students with 161,000 students, including 33,240 dependents, coming to the UK last year.

Asylum backlog hit a record high, with more than 160,000 migrants waiting for decisions on their applications, the report said.

The government is yet to make a final decision on the contentious matter.

Braverman has drawn up proposals to reduce the number, which includes shortening the duration foreign students can stay in Britain post their course.

However, according to the Department of Education, the restrictions will bankrupt UK universities, which depend on foreign students for money.

According to estimates, international students add 35 billion pounds a year to the economy.

According to UK-based New Way Consultancy, foreign students and their dependents contributed to the UK economy not just through fees of 10,000 pounds to 26,000 pounds but also via an NHS surcharge of 400 pounds a year for the student and 600 pounds for a dependent.

It warned that curbs on graduate work visas will force Indian students to shift to countries like Australia and Canada, ultimately leading to the end of the student market in the UK.

More than 45,000 people crossed the Channel to the UK in small boats over the past year, according to government figures, with 90 crossing on Christmas Day alone.

  • Stone quarry ban leaves thousands of families in distress

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, Feb 20: The ban on stone quarrying in Jammu & Kashmir since 2016 has devastated thousands of households who relied on the business for a living.

Although the Lieutenant Governor-led administration reduced sanctions on stone quarry activities in 2021 by allowing the owners to lift only piled-up loose material, those associated with the business say there isn’t much to celebrate as they have apprehensions that the stockpiles will be depleted in a couple of years.

Bashir Ahmad, president United Quarry Association told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that after the 2016 ban, their survival has become difficult, and that the lifting of restrictive sanctions does not guarantee them a safe business.

“Before the ban, there were around 400 stakeholders associated with stone quarrying; now with the ban in place, more than 40 percent have closed down the business,” Bashir said.

He said the government in 2021 allowed the lifting of loose material but that too came with a condition to supply only to government contractors. There should be the complete lifting of the ban on our work, he urged.

The Association president said that after the permission for the lifting of loose material was given, a quarry owner can hardly lift 4 to 5 loads a month.

“The loose stone material that naturally fell down is not going to survive for long; it will drain out by the end of the next year or so, which will signal the complete shutdown of the business. We are currently in such poor financial shape that we are unable to even plan for new businesses,” he said.

According to Bashir, they also discussed a rehabilitation programme with the government that involved moving to a different location, but that plan was never carried out.

Another stone quarry owner, Naseer Ahmad, said his family has gone through mental stress. “We had taken loans against the business,” he said. “We were happy doing our business, everything was going smooth, and then there was a sudden ban.”

Naseer said they were never taken on board by the authorities. “What can we do now as we have families to feed; banks are after us as they are not ready to waive off our loans. Where shall we go in these conditions,” he said.

Ahmad claimed that after the ban on stone quarry works, the families associated with the business are struggling to make their livelihoods as their children were also in this business.

Following the ban on stone quarry works in 2016, numerous protests and pressers were held by the stone quarry owners and their workers demanding the lifting of a complete ban on the functioning of stone quarries—(KNO)

J-K: Landslide damages over dozen houses in Ramban, 13 families shifted

    [ad_1]

Ramban/Jammu: Over a dozen residential houses were damaged in a massive landslide in a remote village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district, rendering 13 families homeless, officials said on Sunday.

The affected families were shifted to safer locations and provided immediate relief, while the main road passing near the village was closed for vehicular traffic after developing cracks, they said.

The incident that took place in Duksar Dal village in Gool sub-division, 45 km from Ramban district headquarters, comes barely a fortnight after 19 residential houses, a mosque, and a religious school for girls developed cracks due to land sinking at Nai Basti village of Doda district.

“A total of 13 houses were damaged and rendered uninhabitable due to the landslide at Duksar Dal over the past three days. The affected families were shifted and provided tents, ration, utensils and blankets as immediate relief,” Sub-Divisional Magistrate Gool Tanveer-ul-Majeed Wani told PTI.

He said the land started sliding on Friday, also affecting a local graveyard following which the mortal remains of a local were exhumed and later buried at another place.

“We are monitoring the situation and have placed restrictions for the time being on the movement of people in the area as the land is still sinking. The experts from Geological Survey of India (GSI) are visiting the place within the next couple of days to inspect the scene and look for the reasons for the sudden landslide,” the officer said.

He said the affected families would be provided compensation from the State Disaster Management Fund as per laid down norms within the shortest possible time.

The SDM said the main road connecting Gool and Sangaldan was closed after it also developed cracks and Border Roads Organisation (BRO) was requested to make the alternate road motorable to facilitate movement of people and defence vehicles.

Raqeeb Wani, the local sarpanch, said “The people are in a panic as we have never witnessed such a thing in the past. We are thankful to the district administration for the quick response and we are hopeful that all the affected families will be suitably rehabilitated.”

He said agricultural and horticulture land was also hit by the landslide and the farmers needed to be provided adequate compensation for the loss of fruit bearing trees.

Meanwhile, a three-member team from the National Institute of Disaster Management headed by Professor Surya Prakash visited Nai Basti village of Tharthri for a survey on Sunday, officials said.

Earlier, several other teams including experts from the GSI also inspected the affected village to ascertain the underlying factors for the development of cracks in the concrete structures.
