    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Nearly 23 farm workers fell ill after they drank water contaminated with suspected phosphorous-based pesticide, from a drip irrigation pipeline in Mulugu on Wednesday.

The workers were hired by a farmer and deployed to harvest red chillies at Gollagudem village in Venkatapuram mandal.

According to the police, the incident reportedly occurred when they were having lunch in the afternoon, consuming water unaware of the contamination in it.

They started vomiting soon after consuming the pesticide-laced water following which they were rushed to Eturunagram Community Health Center(CHC).

After treatment, 20 labourers were discharged while the condition of the remaining three deteriorated.

They were later shifted to the government hospital in Mulugu for advanced treatment.

Last year, more than 50 people, including eight children, fell severely ill after drinking the municipality water in Gadwal.

Fall in line or be destroyed: In Budget speech, AAP govt warns ‘enemies of Punjab’

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: Days after the siege of the Ajnala police station by supporters of a pro-Khalistan preacher, the state government on Friday asked “enemies of Punjab” to fall in line or be destroyed.

The warning was delivered by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema during his Budget speech in the state assembly.

In its first full budget, the Aam Aadmi Party government has allocated Rs 10,523 crore for maintaining law and order — up 11 per cent from the previous year.

“Some evil forces are always looking for opportunities to disturb peace and order in our border state,” Cheema said, adding that such attempts in the past were thwarted by “our brave police forces”.

“I, on behalf of my government warn the enemies of Punjab to fall in line else our government shall destroy them from the root,” he said.

Punjab’s ruling AAP has been under flak from the opposition over the “deterioration” of law and order.

The minister did not directly refer to the incident in Ajnala near Amritsar on February 23, when radical priest Amritpal Singh’s supporters barged into a police station complex, forcing authorities to agree on the release of an arrested man.

Cheema said the state government has set aside Rs 40 crore in the 2023-24 Budget to strengthen the security infrastructure in border districts. This includes CCTV cameras in areas close to the international border, lights and high-end police vehicles.

He said the state government is preparing its law enforcing agencies and police forces for all odds.

The counter-intelligence wing of the force is being fortified with the latest equipment and infrastructure, he said. An outlay of Rs 40 crore has been sanctioned for this.

He said Rs 64 crore will be spent on modernisation of the police force and Rs 30 crore on combating cybercrime in the coming year.

Cheema said the Anti-Gangster Task Force had arrested 567 criminals and killed five gangsters, busted 156 modules, and seized 563 weapons and 125 vehicles till February-end.

  • Google Pixel Watch to now detect if you fall

Google Pixel Watch to now detect if you fall

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Tech giant Google has announced that it is rolling out the fall detection feature to all Pixel watches.

The fall detection feature uses motion sensors built-in to the users’ watch and on-device machine learning to determine if the wearer took a hard fall, the tech giant said in a blogpost on Tuesday.

Also, it will call emergency services if the user doesn’t move or responds within 30 seconds.

“You can turn the feature on in the ‘Updates’ page on the Watch Companion app or directly on the Pixel Watch in the Personal Safety app,” it added.

The tech giant further mentioned that Pixel watches know the difference between taking a hard fall and performing a “vigorous physical activity” because of the company’s machine learning algorithms and “rigorous testing.”

“We trained this process using a broad variety of human and simulated fall data and other motion patterns to accurately detect real falls and minimise potential false alarms,” it added.

In October last year, Google had launched a portfolio of Pixel products, that included the very first Pixel Watch with Wear OS 3.5, and mentioned that “Fall detection (coming in 2023) can sense if you’ve taken a hard fall, connecting you to emergency services and even auto-dialing if you’re unresponsive.”

In 2018, with the launch of the Watch Series 4, Apple had introduced similar fall detection technology.

  • Markets fall in initial trade on weak global trends

Markets fall in initial trade on weak global trends

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Stock market benchmark indices fell in initial trade on Wednesday tracking weak global trends ahead of the release of minutes of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting.

The BSE Sensex fell 329.12 points to 60,343.60 after a weak beginning. The NSE Nifty declined 97.3 points to 17,729.40.

From the Sensex pack, IndusInd Bank, Wipro, UltraTech Cement, Power Grid, Bajaj Finserv, HCL Technologies, Tata Motors, Infosys, NTPC and Bajaj Finance were the major laggards.

Maruti and Larsen & Toubro were the winners.

In Asian markets, South Korea, Japan, China and Hong Kong were trading lower.

The US markets had ended significantly lower on Tuesday.

“US stocks tumbled led by growing concerns that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates higher for longer,” said Mitul Shah, Head of Research Institutional Desk, Reliance Securities Ltd.

The BSE benchmark had edged down 18.82 points or 0.03 per cent to settle at 60,672.72 on Tuesday. The Nifty slipped 17.90 points or 0.1 per cent to end at 17,826.70.

International oil benchmark Brent crude declined 1.21 per cent to USD 83.01 per barrel.

“The US macro data continues to dictate equity markets globally. The US markets reacted sharply negatively to the series of economic data indicating that the process of disinflation is slow and, therefore, the Fed will have to continue raising rates longer than expected earlier.

“This pushed up the 10-year bond yield sharply to 3.95 per cent and stocks fell sharply. These negative US equity market trends are impacting equity markets everywhere and India cannot be an exception to this trend at least in the near-term,” said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.

Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) bought shares worth Rs 525.80 crore on Tuesday, according to exchange data.

  • Red chilli farmers in TN demand MSP as prices fall drastically

Red chilli farmers in TN demand MSP as prices fall drastically

    [ad_1]

Chennai: The red chilli farmers of Tamil Nadu have demanded a Minimum Support Price (MSP) from the government as prices of chilli have fallen drastically in the state.

The harvest season for red chillies commence in January middle and ends by June last.

While speaking to IANS, a red chilli farmer from Ramanathapuram district Arumugan Sounderarajan, said,” To start with, we got decent prices for the produce but as days went by, the prices have slumped bringing in huge losses to me.”

He said that during the initial days of harvesting the price of one quintal of red chilli was Rs 3,000 during January end but presently the price has fallen to Rs 1,500 to 1,800 per quintal which is a major slump in the prices of red chilli.

The farmer said that irrigation and pest attacks have led to a drop in production of chilli as well and coupled with price slump, the farmers are pushed to the wall.

Arumagam said that he had spent around Rs 40,000 per acre and cultivated in 12 acres of land but with the prices falling, he has no source to repay the money which was taken on loan.

Farmers have urged both the state and central governments to fix a minimum support price for the crop.

Veluswamy, another farmer from Villupuram district, said, “Prices of red chillies are fluctuating. While it was Rs 3,000 per quintal a month ago, now it has touched Rs 1,200 per quintal and the farmers are demanding a minimum support price of Rs 4,000 per quintal.”

The farmers also said that if the farmers are left to market forces, then the red chilli farming in Tamil Nadu will almost be finished and there won’t be a return back.
