Bengaluru: Bus conductor fails to return Rs 1; court orders BMTC to pay Rs 3K as compensation

    [ad_1]

The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) was recently ordered to pay a man Rs 2,000 in compensation after he was denied Rs 1 change for a bus ride by the Bengaluru Urban District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission.

According to several media reports, in 2019, a man named Ramesh Naik went on a BMTC bus from Shantinagar to Majestic bus depot, during which the conductor issued a ticket for Rs 29. The complainant paid Rs 30 and was not given the change.

Keeping up the fight, Naik then complained about the conductor to BMTC’s high authorities. To his surprise, the authorities made fun of him and drove him away.

Unhappy with this, he filed a complaint with the local consumer court, asking Rs 15,000 in compensation.

The court has now ordered the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) to pay the guy Rs 2,000 in compensation. The court also ordered BMTC to pay Rs 1,000 towards the complainant’s legal expenses.

“It is the customer’s right to receive the balance due to him, even if it is Rs 1,” the court said while slamming the managing director of Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) for the incident.

When Naik presented his case in court on his own, the counsel for BMTC refuted the charge, claiming the lawsuit was frivolous.

The judges of the consumer court stated in their judgement announced on January 31, 2023 that the complaint is undoubtedly modest in nature, but the BMTC bus conductor’s ‘inattentive’ and ‘irresponsible’ service is unacceptable.” It is the right of the consumer to collect his money even if it is Re 1 and, thus, he is entitled by the Customer Protection Act, 1986 to receive proper compensation from BMTC for the shortcomings,” the judges underlined.

The court ruled that the BMTC’s MD must repay Re 1 to the bus passenger in addition to providing him Rs 2,000 in compensation for the inconvenience. Court further directed that Naik be given Rs 1,000 for his lawsuit fees, and that all monies be paid within 45 days of the decision, or interest would be assessed as a penalty.

  • On eve of war anniversary, EU fails to finalize Russia sanctions deal

On eve of war anniversary, EU fails to finalize Russia sanctions deal

    [ad_1]

The EU has failed to sign off on a much-anticipated round of sanctions against Russia, leaving the bloc struggling to finalize a deal in time to mark the first anniversary on Friday of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Talks will now run into Ukraine’s official commemorations of its first year at war, casting into doubt European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s recent promise to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv to deliver a 10th round of sanctions by then.

Diplomats said agreement had been reached on nearly all of the package, but Poland was objecting to proposed restrictions on imports of synthetic rubber that it claims aren’t strong enough.

While acknowledging holding up the package, Warsaw denied being the problem. “We are not blocking sanctions,” a Polish official said on condition of anonymity. “We just want to have sanctions that make sense.”

All other points have been agreed on, four EU diplomats said.

The Commission was continuing talks with some EU countries on Thursday evening in search of a compromise, according to two of the diplomats. Another meeting of ambassadors from the 27 EU member countries will be held on Friday morning, four diplomats said, to try and secure a deal.

Poland’s objection related to proposed restrictions on imports of synthetic rubber from Russia. Sanctions hawks had called for a complete ban, but in an effort to appease other countries that rely on those imports the Commission suggested setting a quota limit at 560,000 metric tons, an EU diplomat said.

That’s even higher than current imports, the Polish official said. While several EU diplomats said Poland had been the most outspoken opponent of this quota, others have also expressed their discontent over derogations for certain companies. One EU diplomat said that the proposed quota “makes the sanction meaningless.”

Trade data show that imports from Russia haven’t exceeded that quota in the last decade.

The current package already excludes other controversial points, like a ban on Russian diamond imports, making it easier to sanction the family members and the entourages of oligarchs, or sanctioning certain employees of state nuclear company Rosatom.

Patience was running out, with another EU diplomat calling Poland’s move “unsustainable.”

    Victor Jack contributed reporting.

  • Tough times ahead for Pakistan as talks with IMF fails

Tough times ahead for Pakistan as talks with IMF fails

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Tough times are ahead for Pakistan as Islamabad and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have failed to reach a staff-level agreement on a much-needed USD 1.1 billion bailout package aimed at preventing the country from going bankrupt.

Analysts believe that the current economic crisis in Pakistan is a culmination of decades of faulty policies, reported The Al Arabiya Post.

Pakistan is seeking a USD 7 billion bailout package from the IMF to prevent the collapse of the economy. While the visiting IMF delegation is asking for several reforms and compliance with its conditionality.

The IMF mission, led by Nathan Porter, began talks on January 31 with the Pakistan government represented by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar for the ninth review of the assistance package.

PM Sharif, while addressing an apex committee meeting in Peshawar following Monday’s mosque bombing that killed over 100 people, said, “As I speak, the IMF delegation is in Islamabad and they are giving Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and his team a tough time.”

Notably, the resource allocation pattern in Pakistan from one budget to another puts a disproportionate focus on populism and militarization. This has put an additional burden on its exchequer leading to an unsustainable fiscal gap, reported Al Arabiya Post.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on February 3 that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was giving a “tough time” to his country over the restoration of stalled bailout package at a time of “unimaginable” crisis.

Shehbaz Sharif admitted that the country has no option but to accept the IMF conditionality. “You all know we are running short of resources,” Sharif said, adding the country was “facing an acute economic crisis”.

Moreover, the Pakistani rupee, which has been in a steep slide since last week, hit a record low against the US dollar. The Pakistani rupee fell by 1.9 per cent to a record low of 276.58 per dollar in the inter-bank market the same day, according to the Central Bank, reported Al Arabiya Post.

As the IMF bailout package is conditional on Pakistan implementing IMF suggested measures, its release would require Islamabad to take tough decisions.

After the first round of technical talks between the IMF team and the government concluded on February 4, Pak Prime Minister observed that the lender was imposing conditions that were “beyond our wildest dreams”.

The discussions covered details of expenditure and revenue performance to identify the policy measures- both revenue and non-revenue- that would have to be taken over the next four months of the current fiscal year. The Pak Prime Ministered, despite calling the IMF conditionality unimaginable acknowledged that the country had no choice but to implement the conditions.

It has been seen that Islamabad has a policy obduracy and inertia that prohibit it to shun its populist policies and take reform measures on debt, fiscal, trade and structural fronts to address its economic woes, reported Al Arabiya Post.

Analysts opine that the rocky road Pakistan is passing through is its own creation. In the first instance, a debt-dependent growth strategy is itself a sure recipe to fall into a debt trap, especially when industrial growth and diversification are limited and the export basket is primarily made up of primary goods.

The debt dependence has also eroded the sovereignty of Pakistan and the country’s economic and foreign policies are dictated by those who provide funds. Such dependence on external funding has impeded the structural transformation of the Pak economy and its indigenous growth impetus.

Secondly, an artificially designed threat perception in Pakistan created by the vested interests in Islamabad’s establishment has totally distorted the allocation of resources in the country giving undue emphasis on militarisation in the name of preparing for a threat that does not exist.

The third most remarkable flaw in Pakistan’s economic policy is a deliberate and foolhardy choice of missing the development opportunities generated by free trade, reported Al Arabiya Post.

While Pakistan has a good location to leverage the presence of two giant economies in its neighbourhood, it has opted to isolate one of them and sided with the other at the cost of huge losses in trade creation.

Not giving the Most Favoured Nation status to India and keeping the trade routes closed for direct trade is a self-defeating proposition.

Islamabad could no more avoid taking hard decisions. The situation continues to deteriorate. With only around USD 3.10 billion in foreign exchange reserves, which can only cover 18 days’ worth of imports, and a shortage of basic goods including food and medicine and ever-spiralling inflation, the choice to comply with the IMF conditionality would not be easy for Pakistan.

Opposition criticises budget, says fails to tackle inflation

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Opposition criticised the economic policies of the Union government on Wednesday, saying that unemployment and poverty have risen in the country due to it.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, while initiating the debate on the Union Budget in Lok Sabha, said that the Union government had failed to control inflation.

He added that an “A” grade should be given to the Union Budget, not the one which is given in schools, but the one which stands for Adani, whom it is meant to benefit.

The budget, Gogoi said, had nothing for the common man while all announcements were for a particular corporate group.

The Congress MP said that the government has announced capital expenditure to the tune of Rs 10 lakh crore, of which nearly Rs five lakh crore was for infrastructure projects such as highways, railways and airports.

These assets would be built with public money, which would later be monetised to ‘crony capitalists’, he claimed.

Gogoi said there was no additional allocation for public sector undertakings that pay dividends to the government, nor are there any allocations for the armed forces, he alleged.

The government has not made adequate allocation for the armed forces to deal with the challenge posed by China, he said.

Gogoi claimed that while other countries are decreasing their dependence on China, India’s imports from that country were on the rise.

He added that greater investment was needed in education and manufacturing sectors.

The Lok Sabha was later adjourned for the day due to lack of quorum.

The shocking revelation came during the marriage rituals when the priest grew ‘doubtful of the man’s behaviour’ and informed the girl’s family.

The bride, Rita Singh, immediately walked off from the dais which led to a verbal spat between the two families and the police were called.

The bride’s family claimed that until the day of the marriage, they were unaware that the 23-year-old groom was ‘mentally weak’.

Mohit, the bride’s brother, said, “Marriages usually happen in good faith and the mediator was a close relative, so we trusted him and did not meet the guy. When the priest told us about his odd behaviour, we decided to conduct a test and gave him 30 currency notes of Rs 10 to count which he could not. After knowing about his condition, Rita refused to marry him.”

After the girl called off the wedding, a heated argument ensued between the two families. The matter reached the police who tried to mediate but the bride was not willing to give in so the baraat had to return.

Gujarat: After social boycott fails, family ‘kidnaps’ woman

Ahmedabad: After cops intervened and ended the social boycott of 17 families of the ‘Nai’ (barber) community, which were facing discrimination post one of its members married an upper caste woman in Bhutavad village here, now the woman concerned has been kidnapped, allegedly by her father and three others.

The affected families were facing a social boycott after Sachin Nai and Manasvi, who came in contact two years ago, got married at the Mirzapur Court in Ahmedabad on December 12, 2022.

On Thursday, the affected families were rehabilitated at the village by the police, and members of the upper caste were asked to resume social relations or face action under the law.
