Tell Mumbai Police to lodge FIR in Solanki’s death: IIT-B students to Fadnavis

Mumbai: At least three IIT-Bombay students’ associations have written to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, urging him to direct the Mumbai Police and the SIT to accept a complaint by the parents of Darshan Solanki, a Dalit student who ended his life on the campus last month.

The Ambedkar Phule Periyar Study Circle-IITB, the Ambedkarite Students Collective-IITB and Concerned Alumni of IIT-B have sent a letter to Fadnavis, over a month after Solanki (18) reportedly jumped to death from the seventh floor of his hostel on February 12.

Solanki’s parents arrived here last week from Ahmedabad to register a complaint, but the Powai police declined it ostensibly on grounds that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up for the purpose is already probing the case.

Darshan’s father Ramesh Solanki is a plumber, his mother Tarlika is a domestic help, while his sister Jahnavi is studying for her MCA. They have questioned the circumstances leading to Darshan’s death, and rejected outright the interim internal probe panel report of the IIT-B which came out recently.

“Darshan’s parents wanted to lodge an FIR on March 16 and came all the way from Ahmedabad for the purpose. Despite multiple pleas from the parents and accompanying lawyers, the FIR has not been lodged yet,” the students’ associations informed Fadnavis.

They also pointed out that as per the Supreme Court, the police stations can register an FIR regardless of an SIT probe, and the desperate Solanki couple got no succour even after meeting the Mumbai Police top brass later.

“Till now, the SIT based its investigation on the ADR filed by the police. The refusal of SIT to base their investigation on an FIR is a failure to recognise the rights of the family to register a complaint in respect of cognisable offence as provided under the law,” read the letter.

Journalist Warishe was killed in orchestrated accident: Fadnavis

Mumbai: Rajapur-based journalist Shashikant Warishe was brutally killed in an accident that was carried out deliberately, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated on Friday.

Warishe, who had written against a proposed refinery in the coastal Ratnagiri district, was mowed down by an SUV, allegedly driven by a local real estate dealer, last month.

In a written response to a question about the incident in the Legislative Council, Fadnavis, who holds the home portfolio, said probe was on to ascertain whether it was pre-planned murder.

“Journalist Shashikant Warishe was brutally killed in a deliberately orchestrated accident,” Fadnavis’s reply said.

Warishe had written against the accused which angered him, it added.

A Special Investigation Team headed by an officer of the deputy superintendent rank is probing the case, the deputy CM said.

Warishe (48), a journalist with Mahanagri Times, was mowed down by the SUV allegedly driven by land dealer Pandharinath Amberkar at Rajapur, 440 km from Mumbai, on February 6. He died in hospital the next day.

Opposition targeted the Eknath Shinde-led government over the death, questioning the law and order situation in the state.

  • Koshyari had informed me about MVA leaders’ ‘threatening’ letter: Fadnavis

Koshyari had informed me about MVA leaders’ ‘threatening’ letter: Fadnavis

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Tuesday that he had been informed by former governor B S Koshyari that MVA leaders had written a letter with a threatening tone to the ex-governor over MLC nominations and refused to withdraw it.

The deputy CM’s remarks come a day after Koshyari defended his stand to sit on the nominations for 12 Members of the Legislative Council under the governor’s quota when Uddhav Thackeray led the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in the state.

Koshyari had said that MVA leaders had tried to browbeat him over the MLC nominations.

Speaking to reporters in Pune, Fadnavis said, “As per my information, MahaVikas Aghadi leaders had visited Raj Bhavan and met (then) governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. The governor told me that MVA leaders had written a letter in a threatening tone. He had even asked them to re-submit a fresh letter but due to their ego, they refused to do it.”

The MLC nominations were a major flashpoint between the then MVA government and Koshyari, who recently resigned as the Maharashtra governor.

Leaders from MVA, which comprises the Thackeray group, the Nationalist Congress Party and the Congress, had also accused Koshyari of acting at the behest of the Bharatiya Janata Party, which was in the opposition then.

  • Fadnavis mocks Uddhav over Sena split after alliance with NCP, Congress

Fadnavis mocks Uddhav over Sena split after alliance with NCP, Congress

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Uddhav Thackeray claimed the Shiv Sena had rotted during its 25-year alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party, while it has been decimated in its two-and-half-year alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party and Congress, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis quipped on Sunday.

Speaking at a ‘Vijay Sankalp’ rally in Kolhapur in the presence of Union Home Minister and senior colleague Amit Shah, he said the “traitors” had been taught a lesson and shown their place six months ago, apparently a reference to the split in the Shiv Sena, which brought down the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government.

Taking a swipe at Thackeray, the deputy CM said, “Those who said they rotted in the 25-year alliance with the BJP have now seen their party finished in two-and-half years after joining hands with the NCP, Congress (to form the Maha Vikas Aghdi post the 2019 Assembly poll results). They have been brought to the streets.”

In an apparent attack on Thackeray’s repeated utterances that the party was founded by his father late Bal Thackeray, who groomed its leaders, Fadnavis said “the Shiv Sena cannot be a property”.

“It is a school of thought. There can be a heir to a property or to some assets but not for thoughts. You have to put them in action and live up to these thoughts,” Fadnavis said.

Women SHGs to hold ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ protest in front of Maha DY CM Fadnavis

Nagpur: Members of women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) will chant the Hanuman Chalisa in front of the office of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Nagpur city on Monday to draw his attention to their demands.

The city police on Sunday enhanced the security at the office of Fadnavis, who represents the Nagpur south-west Assembly constituency, in view of the protest call given on Sunday.

Members of women SHGs have been staging protests in Nagpur city, the hometown of Fadnavis, for a week demanding the release of the honorarium which they claimed has been withheld by the state government.

Nihal Pande, who represents protesters, on Sunday said a rally will be taken out from the Samvidhan square to Trikoni Park near the residence of DYCM Fadnavis on Monday morning.

“The women will read Hanuman Chalisa so that the eyes of Fadnavis will open,” Pande said.
