AP Forest dept shifts tiger cubs to in-situ facility in Tirupati

Tirupati: After failing to reunite four tiger cubs found in a village in Nandyala district of Andhra Pradesh with their mother, the Forest department has safely shifted the litter to an in-situ conservation centre near Tirupati, an official said on Friday.

The all-female litter found more than four days ago at Gummadapuram village has safely reached the Tirupati zoo, he said.

“The tiger cubs have reached Tirupati zoo safely and have been handed over,” said Allen Teron, deputy director, Atmakur, Wildlife Division, Nagarjunsagar Srisailam Tiger Reserve (NSTR).

Late on Thursday, after failing to reunite the cubs with the tigress, the Forest department decided to shift the cubs as per the instructions of the principal chief conservator of forests and the chief wildlife warden to an in-situ enclosure at Sri Venkateswara Zoological Park (SVZP).

Laden in perforated wooden boxes, the cubs were taken to the Tirupati Zoo in a convoy in the night, after efforts to restore them to the mother, even after surpassing the crucial 48-hour timeline key for the tigress to accept or reject the litter.

It took more than 40 hours after the timeline for the southern state’s forest department to take the final decision on the litter found by a villager going to attend nature’s call on Monday morning.

Teron indicated that the in-situ animal rescue centre near Tirupati, which is currently almost empty, offers a perfect setting for the cubs.

However, the department is keen on restoring the cubs into the wilderness, back to their original wild instincts, rather than caging them for exhibition in a zoo.

Despite massive efforts, 70 trap cameras, infrared sensors and several forest officials involvement, the department failed to catch even a glimpse of the beast in real or in pictures, though local shepherds witnessed a direct sighting of the embattled tigress.

Trap cameras and sensors were set up within a radius of 200 metres.

However, a large number of pug marks were found, which correctly matched with the tiger’s designated unique number, including recording some roars somewhere in the vicinity.

The cubs were in perfect condition under the custody of the forest department all through the reunification ordeal and feasting on mashed chicken liver, royal canin and other brands of milk without sugar, besides ORS and fluid state multivitamins.

Estimated by tiger experts to be three months old, the department followed the protocol laid down by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) in handling orphaned or abandoned cubs.

Hyderabad: Gandhi hospital to get 'Organ transplantation' block, Harish Rao

Hyderabad: The Telangana government will soon set up an organ transplantation facility in Gandhi General Hospital with eight operating rooms for the welfare of the needy, health minister T Harish Rao said at the House on Saturday.

In response to budget requests made in the Assembly, Harish Rao stated that the proposed hospital will include modular operation theatres (MOT) equipped with cutting-edge technology, intensive care units (ICU), and other facilities where six organs could be transplanted. Within the following five months, he said, the plant will be functioning.

The health minister stated that the 300-bed cancer block at MNJ Cancer Hospital, which was constructed at a cost of Rs 40 crore, will soon be inaugurated. With the addition of the additional block, the hospital’s total bed capacity would rise to 750.

PM unveils India’s biggest helicopter manufacturing facility in Tumakuru

Tumakuru: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s helicopter factory the country’s largest chopper manufacturing facility in the Tumakuru district of Karnataka.

Bengaluru-headquartered HAL plans to produce more than 1,000 helicopters in the range of 3-15 tonne with a total business of more than Rs 4 lakh crore over a period of 20 years at this facility in Gubbi taluk, officials said.

The factory, spread across 615 acres for which the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone in 2016, would initially manufacture Light Utility Helicopters (LUH)).

It will enable India to meet its entire requirement of helicopters without import and giving a much-needed fillip to the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ in helicopter design, development, and manufacture, they said.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and senior officials of the Ministry of Defence were among those present on the occasion.

“It is a dedicated new greenfield helicopter factory which will enhance India’s capacity and ecosystem to build helicopters,” Singh said.

Assembly polls in Karnataka are due by May.

PM Modi unveiled the LUH, which has been flight tested. The LUH is an indigenously designed and developed three-tonne class, single-engine multipurpose utility helicopter. Initially, the factory will produce around 30 helicopters per year and can be enhanced to 60 and then 90 every year in a phased manner, according to the Defence Ministry.

The factory will be augmented to produce other helicopters such as Light Combat Helicopters (LCHs) and Indian Multirole Helicopters (IMRHs). It will also be used for maintenance, repair and overhaul of LCH, LUH, Civil Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) and IMRH in the future.

Potential exports of civil LUH will also be catered to from this factory, which is being equipped with state-of-the-art Industry 4.0 standard tools and techniques for its operations, officials said.

The proximity of the factory, with the existing HAL facilities in Bengaluru, will boost the aerospace manufacturing ecosystem in the region and support skill and infrastructure development such as schools, colleges and residential areas, it was noted.

The factory is fully operational after the establishment of facilities like heli-runway, flight hangar, final assembly hangar, structure assembly hangar, air traffic control and various supporting service facilities, officials said. PTI GMS RS

IIT Hyderabad’s Raindrop Research Facility to help precision prediction of rainfall

Hyderabad: The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) has established a Raindrop Research Facility (RRF) for simulating atmospheric conditions from the clouds to the ground in order to better predict rainfall.

The facility was inaugurated on Friday by V.K. Saraswat, Member, of NITI Aayog.

Accurate rainfall prediction is one of the major challenges in environmental research as rainfall is influenced by several factors and atmospheric conditions. The RRF will offer a more accurate understanding of rainfall which will help understand global climate change better.

Explaining the uniqueness of the facility, Kirti Sahu, lead researcher at RRF and professor in the department of chemical engineering at IITH, said, “One of the key limitations in rainfall modelling is the lack of fundamental knowledge of the microphysical processes like coalescence, breakup and phase change, in the actual atmospheric conditions.

“Using the novel experimental facility developed at IITH, the temperature can be varied from -10-degree C to 40 degrees C and relative humidity can be maintained from zero to the saturation level. Thus, we can mimic the dynamic atmospheric conditions from cloud to ground and estimate the shape and size distributions of raindrops at various altitudes. This information will be used to improve rainfall prediction. This methodology is a far better choice than the other measurement methods in use now.”

The machine learning-based digital holography technique developed at IIT Hyderabad has emerged as a powerful tool for capturing three-dimensional information about raindrops with high spatial resolution. This technique will be beneficial for improving rainfall forecasts when combined with the unique experimental facility.

B.S. Murty, Director, IITH, said, “This facility is expected to provide a lot of information on weather forecasting, particularly on rainfall. It is not only going to be useful for our country, but also to the whole world in predicting rainfall with much better precision.”

Iran says drone attack targets defense facility in Isfahan

Details on the Isfahan attack, which happened around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, remained scarce. A Defense Ministry statement described three drones being launched at the facility, with two of them successfully shot down. A third apparently made it through to strike the building, causing “minor damage” to its roof and wounding no one, the ministry said.

Iranian state television’s English-language arm, Press TV, aired mobile phone video apparently showing the moment that drone struck along the busy Imam Khomeini Expressway that heads northwest out of Isfahan, one of several ways for drivers to go to the holy city of Qom and Tehran, Iran’s capital. A small crowd stood gathered, drawn by anti-aircraft fire, watching as an explosion and sparks struck a dark building.

“Oh my God! That was a drone, wasn’t it?” the man filming shouts. “Yeah, it was a drone.”

Those there fled after the strike.

That footage of the strike, as well as footage of the aftermath analyzed by The Associated Press, corresponded to a site on Minoo Street in northwestern Isfahan that’s near a shopping center that includes a carpet and an electronics store.

Iranian defense and nuclear sites increasingly find themselves surrounded by commercial properties and residential neighborhoods as the country’s cities sprawl ever outward. Some locations as well remain incredibly opaque about what they produce, with only a sign bearing a Defense Ministry or paramilitary Revolutionary Guard logo.

The Defense Ministry only called the site a “workshop,” without elaborating on what it made. Isfahan, some 350 kilometers (215 miles) south of Tehran, is home to both a large air base built for its fleet of American-made F-14 fighter jets and its Nuclear Fuel Research and Production Center.

The attack comes after Iran’s Intelligence Ministry in July claimed to have broken up a plot to target sensitive sites around Isfahan. A segment aired on Iranian state TV in October included purported confessions by alleged members of Komala, a Kurdish opposition party that is exiled from Iran and now lives in Iraq, that they planned to target a military aerospace facility in Isfahan after being trained by Israel’s Mossad intelligence service.

Activists say Iranian state TV has aired hundreds of coerced confessions over the last decade. Israeli officials declined to comment on the attack.

Separately, Iran’s state TV said a fire broke out at an oil refinery in an industrial zone near the northwestern city of Tabriz. It said the cause was not yet known, as it showed footage of firefighters trying to extinguish the blaze. Tabriz is some 520 kilometers (325 miles) northwest of Tehran.

State TV also said the magnitude 5.9 earthquake killed three people and injured 816 others in rural areas in West Azerbaijan province, damaging buildings in many villages.

Iran’s theocratic government faces challenges both at home and abroad as its nuclear program rapidly enriches uranium closer than ever to weapons-grade levels since the collapse of its atomic accord with world powers.

Nationwide protests have shaken the country since the September death of Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish-Iranian woman detained by the country’s morality police. Its rial currency has plummeted to new lows against the U.S. dollar. Meanwhile, Iran continues to arm Russia with the bomb-carrying drone that Moscow uses in attacks in Ukraine on power plants and civilian targets.

Israel is suspected of launching a series of attacks on Iran, including an April 2021 assault on its underground Natanz nuclear facility that damaged its centrifuges. In 2020, Iran blamed Israel for a sophisticated attack that killed its top military nuclear scientist.

Israeli officials rarely acknowledge operations carried out by the country’s secret military units or its Mossad intelligence agency. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who recently re-entered the premiership, long has considered Iran to be the biggest threat his nation faces. The U.S. and Israel also just held their largest-ever military exercise amid the tensions with Iran.

Meanwhile, tensions remain high between Azerbaijan and Iran as Azerbaijan and Armenia have fought over the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Iran also wants to maintain its 44-kilometer (27-mile) border with landlocked Armenia — something that could be threatened if Azerbaijan seizes new territory through warfare.

Iran in October launched a military exercise near the Azerbaijan border. Azerbaijan also maintains close ties to Israel, which has infuriated Iranian hard-liners, and has purchased Israeli-made drones for its military.

Anwar Gargash, a senior Emirati diplomat, warned online that the Isfahan attack represented one more event in the “dangerous escalation the region is witnessing.” The United Arab Emirates was targeted in missile and drone attacks last year claimed by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels.

It “is not in the interest of the region and its future,” Gargash wrote on Twitter. “Although the problems of the region are complex, there is no alternative to dialogue.”

Iran reports drone attack on military facility

Tehran: Drones attacked a defence facility in Iran’s Isfahan city, media reports said.

“An explosion has occurred in one of the military centres affiliated to the Ministry of Defence,” deputy head of security for Isfahan Governorate Mohammad Reza Jan-Nesari told Fars News Agency, CNN reported.

Iran successfully repelled a drone attack on one of its military plants on Saturday, the defence ministry said in a statement after local media reported that a loud blast had been heard at a military plant in the city.

One of the drones was hit and brought down by the plant’s air defence system and the other two were caught in its defence traps and exploded, Islamic Republic News Agency reported quoting the statement.

No casualties were reported and the attack only caused slight damage to the roof of the defence equipment facility.
