‘Nothing will stop me’: Lewis Hamilton defiant in face of possible FIA censure

    [ad_1]

Lewis Hamilton has defiantly insisted that he will not be prevented from expressing his opinions by the FIA.

The British driver was unequivocal that he would not be silenced by Formula One’s governing body’s ban on drivers making political statements and intimated he would continue to do so even under the threat of sporting penalties.

Hamilton was speaking at the launch of his team’s new Mercedes W14 car at Silverstone. As the sport’s most well-known global star and a seven-time F1 champion his stance, while expected, will still be a body blow to the FIA’s attempt to regulate what drivers say publicly.

“Nothing will stop me from speaking on the things I am passionate about and the issues that there are,” he said. “I feel the sport does have a responsibility still, always to speak out on things, to create awareness on important topics particularly as we are travelling to all these different places. So nothing changes for me.”

He was reacting for the first time to the FIA’s December decision in to adjust the regulations, banning drivers from making “political, religious or personal” statements or comments without permission.

The issue has been highly contentious ever since, almost universally condemned by drivers who have objected to any restriction of their freedom of speech within the sport. F1 management have also rejected the proposal with the sport’s CEO, Stefano Domenicali, stating they would never “gag the drivers”.

Hamilton accepted his defiance may prove costly in penalties, possibly including points deductions during the forthcoming season, but acknowledged that while that would not be welcome, it was a price he considered potentially worth paying.

“It would be silly to say I would want to get penalty points for speaking out on things but I am still going to be speaking my mind,” he said. “We still have this platform, there are still a lot of things we need to tackle. The support of Stefano has been amazing and all the drivers have been very much aligned on freedom of speech.”

Hamilton joins a swathe of drivers who have objected to the ruling, including the world champion, Max Verstappen, and McLaren’s Lando Norris, who said on Monday he would also potentially defy the rule even at the cost of fines being imposed.

The FIA have offered no detail on what specific restrictions the regulation would apply to drivers but on Monday stated that they were going to issue guidance and clarity in the near future. However they are now facing concerted and apparently united driver opposition that appears steadfast in rejecting any restrictions on their freedom of speech.

Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate, George Russell, a director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association which represents the F1 drivers, also expressed his discontent. “I’m not sure why the FIA have taken a stance like this, I think it’s totally unnecessary,” he said. “We are not going to limit our views or our thoughts because of some silly regulation.”

Russell intimated that he was expecting a climbdown, stating that he hoped the FIA clarification would resolve the issue before the first race in Bahrain on 5 March.

Mercedes unveil ‘exciting’ new car for 2023 season after last year’s problems – video

With the new season approaching and having underperformed in 2022 when the Mercedes was off the pace of Red Bull and Ferrari, the team are optimistic that their new challenger, returning in a black livery for weight-saving purposes, will propel them toward the fray at the front of the grid.

“I can’t remember being as excited to get in the car,” said Hamilton, now 38 and entering his 17th F1 season. “I feel reinvigorated, excited to work with the team. It’s great to see how focused everyone is, how pumped everyone is. It’s like Christmas, you’re just waiting to open your present.”

Hamilton’s contract with Mercedes ends this year but the team principal, Toto Wolff, maintained that he expected the British driver to conclude a new deal to continue racing as the season progressed.

He believes his driver is very much still at his peak. “He appears to me in great form, very positive, motivated, energised, maybe the best so far I have seen him in 10 years,” he said.

  • ‘Bulldozer policy’ became face of govt’s cruelty: Rahul Gandhi

‘Bulldozer policy’ became face of govt’s cruelty: Rahul Gandhi

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: After the death of a mother-daughter duo in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur during an anti-encroachment drive by the administration, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government and said the ‘bulldozer policy’ has become the face of the cruelty of the government.

“When the arrogance of power takes away the right of the people to live, it is called dictatorship. My mind is disturbed by the incident in Kanpur. This ‘bulldozer policy’ has become the face of cruelty of this government. India does not accept this,” tweeted Rahul Gandhi.

A 44-year-old woman and her daughter were killed after a fire broke out during an anti-encroachment drive at Marauli village of Kanpur Dehat region, the police said on Tuesday.

The deceased were identified as Pramila Dixit (44) and her daughter, Neha Dixit (22).

The victims’ family alleged that officials engaged in the drive set the house on fire when the mother-daughter duo were inside.

Based on the allegations, a case has been registered against over a dozen people including sub divisional magistrate (SDM), station officer (SO), and Lekhpal.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak spoke to the family of the victims via video call. The Deputy Chief Minister assured all possible help to the victims’ family and strict action against the culprits.

According to information, the incident took place in the Marauli village on Monday afternoon during a demolition action by a team of district administration against “illegal encroachment”.

The family members protested against the demolition drive and allegedly threatened to set themselves on fire to stop the removal action.

This led to a scuffle between family members and officials, and during the ruckus a fire broke out and the entire house was gutted.

There were four people inside the house at the time when the fire broke out, the exact cause of which was not clear.

“Two of them were killed, while others sustained burn injuries,” officials said. Though the exact reason behind the fire was not clear, the victim family accused officials and anti-social elements of the area of deliberately setting their house on fire. Kanpur Police in an official note said that on the basis of the complaint by the victims’ family, a case has been registered against more than 12 people including SDM, SO, and Lekhpal.

Four locals, identified as Ashok Dixit, Anil Dixit, Nirmal Dixit, and Vishal Dixit have also been named in the FIR.

“There was a complaint lodged against Vishal Dixit (one of the accused named in the FIR) that he was trying to encroach upon the land belonging to village community. In connection with this, the administrative team reached the area to remove encroachment where the incident occured,” the police said.

Further investigation in the matter is underway.

Saudi Arabia reveals face of 2000-year-old Nabataean woman

    [ad_1]

Riyadh: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has revealed the first known reconstruction of ‘Hinat’, a Nabataean woman, displayed at the Hegra Welcome Centre at AlUla from February 6.

A team of archaeologists and academics in forensic science and model-making working for the Royal Commission for AlUla Governorate managed to reconstruct the face of a woman from the Nabataean civilization that existed in the Arabian Peninsula centuries ago.

The reconstructed face is based on the remains of Hinat, who was first disvovered in 2015 in a 2000-year-old tomb in Hegra.

The inscription on her tomb emphasizes the importance of women in Nabataean Hegra society, who owned property and made their own tombs.

    20230208 192033

The team of scientists met in London in September 2019, where they discussed the expected final shape of Hinat’s face.

Hinat’s reconstruction was based on a one-day scholarly roundtable with experts in Hegra, Nabatean, and AlUla antiquities, discussing her appearance, status, and clothing.

Archaeologists, anthropologists, forensic reconstruction experts and a 3D sculptor were involved in the reconstruction and after a 3D model was completed and validated in July 2020, work began on making molds to produce a silicone bust.

The Royal Commission for Al-Ula plans to continue important historical explorations in the future.

  • AAP, BJP face off after CBI report claims Delhi govt’s feedback unit collected ‘political intelligence’

AAP, BJP face off after CBI report claims Delhi govt’s feedback unit collected ‘political intelligence’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A row erupted on Wednesday over a CBI report claiming political intelligence gathering by the Feedback Unit (FBU) formed by the AAP after coming to power in Delhi in 2015, with the BJP demanding registration of case against Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.

Hitting back, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said the BJP’s allegation that Sisodia was involved in “political snooping” is “completely false”.

The Kejriwal government claimed in a statement that these all cases are “politically motivated”. “The CBI and ED should rather investigate the dubious relationship between Modi and Adani where the real corruption happened,” it alleged.

The CBI in its preliminary inquiry report found that the FBU formed through a Delhi cabinet decision on September 29, 2015 indulged in gathering political intelligence.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva alleged that the AAP since its inception has been working with hostility towards its political opponents.

“The Kejriwal government formed FBU to keep an eye on not only its political opponents but Union Ministers, MPs, LG Office, media houses, leading businessmen and also the judges,” Sachdeva charged in a press conference.

The CBI in its report submitted to Vigilance department sought approval of the LG who is competent authority in the matter, to register a case against Deputy CM Manish Sisodia who played an “active role” in creation of the FBU.

The central agency also sought permission of the LG for registering cases against others involved in functioning of the FBU.

Sources said LG VK Saxena has referred the CBI request to the President through the Ministry of Home Affairs, for registration of a case against Sisodia.

The LG has also sent the CBI recommendation to Home ministry, regarding registration of cases against then FBU joint director, RK Sinha, and FBU officers Pradeep Kumar Punj and Satish Khetrapa. Approval for the prosecution against then Vigilance director, Sukesh Kumar Jain, an IRS officer, will come from the Finance ministry, they said.

The approval has, however, been given by the LG for registration of a case against Delhi Chief Minister’s advisor Gopal Mohan, the sources said.

The AAP in a statement said “the whole country knows political spying is done by Modi not Manish Sisodia. An FIR should be registered against Modi not Manish Sisodia,” the party said in its statement.

The CBI report said that the FBU was tasked to gather actionable feedback regarding working of various departments of Delhi government and also to do “trap cases”.

The FBU started functioning from February 2016 and a fund of Rs 1 crore was kept for it under “secret service expenditure”. A rough analysis of nature of reports generated by the unit revealed that while 60 per cent of it was related to vigilance matters, political intelligence and other issues accounted for around 40 per cent, the report said.

“Scrutiny of such reports during the period from February 2016 to early September 2016 shows that a substantial number of reports submitted by FBU officials were not actionable feedback on corruption in any department, but related to political activities of persons, political entities and political issues touching political interest of the Aam Admi Party,” the report said.

“The feedback unit was not functioning in the manner and for the purpose approved by the cabinet but was working for some other hidden purposes which were not in the interest of the GNCTD but private interest of Aam Admi Party and Manish Sisodia, the Dy CM, who played an active role in its creation of Feedback flouting established rules of GNCTD and MHA.” charged the CBI report.

It also alleged that the “unlawful” manner of creation and working of the FBU caused loss of to the government exchequer to the tune of around Rs 36 lakh.

BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri charged that the AAP government formed the FBU by misusing public fund and indulging in a “scam”.

He demanded registration of FIR against Kejriwal and Sisodia charging they had “malafide intention” behind creation of the feedback unit.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government termed “all allegations” as “completely bogus”.

“Till now, the CBI, ED and Delhi Police have registered so many cases against us. About 163 cases have been registered against us. However, the BJP has not been able to prove even a single case. About 134 of these cases have been dismissed by the courts and in the rest of the cases also, the BJP government has not been able to provide any evidence,” it said in the statement.
