  • Pak Vs NZ 3rd ODI: Fakhar Zaman Eyes Top Position In ODI Rankings – Kashmir News

    [ad_1]

Karachi, May 3: Fakhar Zaman has emerged as a challenger to Babar Azam’s dominance in the ODI rankings after his recent performances against New Zealand in the five-match ODI series.

Fakhar has commenced Pakistan’s ongoing ODI series at home against New Zealand in a blaze of glory, with the 33-year-old scoring back-to-back centuries to put his side in control of the five-match series.

The left-hander scored 117 in the series opener in Rawalpindi and then backed it up with a magnificent 180* in the second match at the same venue and was duly rewarded with an eight-spot jump to second behind Babar on the latest rankings update.

Babar is on the top of the ranking list with 887 points while Fakhar holds the second position with 784 points.

Fakhar has scored three ODI centuries on the bounce and rises to a career-best rating of 784 rating points and is now the closest challenger to his skipper despite trailing by 103 rating points.

It means Pakistan now have three players in the top five on the latest ODI batting charts ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup later this year, with Imam-ul-Haq remaining in fifth place behind his two teammates and South Africa’s Rassie van der Dussen and India’s Shubman Gill.

New Zealand’s stars didn’t miss out completely, with Tom Latham and Daryl Mitchell the big winners following their good starts to the series in Pakistan.

Latham hit 98 in the second match of the series and moves up three places to equal 29th, while Mitchell scored a brilliant 129 in the same contest to rise from outside the top 100 to 57th on the ODI batting rankings.

There was a slight re-shuffle behind top-ranked Australian Josh Hazlewood inside the top 10 of the ODI rankings for bowlers, while experienced Oman captain Zeeshan Maqsood jumped three places to fifth overall on the list for ODI all-rounders following his four-wicket haul and steady knock of 40 against the UAE in Mulpani.

A host of Sri Lanka players also made some ground on the latest Test rankings, following their impressive series sweep over Ireland in Galle.

Left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya was the big winner on the rankings for bowlers, with the 31-year-old improving six spots to 13th on the back of his seven-wicket haul during the second Test.

Teammate Ramesh Mendis collected six wickets from the same Test and moved up 10 places to 22nd as a result, while experienced duo Angelo Mathews (up one spot to 22nd) and Kusal Mendis (up three places to 39th) improved the rankings for batters after reaching three figures during the match.–(ANI)

All eyes on the late actress Jiah Khan case verdict today

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Almost 10 years after actress-model Jiah Khan was found hanging in a Mumbai flat, a Special CBI Court will deliver its verdict in the much-talked-about sensational case — in which Bollywood actor Sooraj Pancholi is an accused — here later on Friday.

An American citizen, Jiah, 25, was found hanging around the midnight of June 3, 2013 at her flat in Sagar Sangeet Building in the posh Juhu area.

Jiah was stated to be in a relationship with Sooraj — the son of veteran actor-couple Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab.

She apparently left a note, which pointed the needle of suspicion towards Sooraj, who was trying to grab a foothold in Bollywood at that time.

In a major shocker for Bollywood, Sooraj was booked under IPC Section 306 for allegedly abetting Jiah’s suicide, a week after she ended her life.

Subsequently, the case was handed over to the CBI after repeated pleas by Jiah’s mother Rabia Khan and directives of the Bombay High Court on 3 July, 2014.

In her note, Jiah had narrated her ordeal, intimate relationship, physical abuse, mental and physical torture she suffered allegedly at the hands of Sooraj.

The prosecution in the case had examined 22 witnesses, including Jiah’s mother Rabia, while Advocate Prashant Patil appeared for Sooraj.

United AP’s last CM Kiran Kumar Reddy eyes Malkajgiri on BJP ticket?

Hyderabad: The last chief minister of united Andhra Pradesh, N Kiran Kumar Reddy recently joined the BJP and is more interested in participating in Telangana politics than Andhra Pradesh.

Kiran Kumar Reddy, who hails from Andhra Pradesh, had opposed the Congress high command’s decision to create a separate Telangana state as chief minister.

According to reliable sources, Mr. Reddy is interested in contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Malkajari parliamentary constituency. He informed the BJP high command about his interest in Malkajagri constituency and said that there is a significant number of Andhra voters in this constituency and the BJP can easily win.

Kiran Kumar Reddy is educated at Hyderabad Public School and Nizam College and is exploring his political future in Telangana owing to his good relations in the state. The Andhra leader’s decision to contest in Telangana is unlikely to be objected by the BRS as the party itself is going to contest in Andhra Pradesh and also eyeing Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Sources close to Kiran Kumar Reddy believe that the BJP high command has accepted the proposal to contest the Lok Sabha elections. However, a final decision will be taken after consulting local BJP leaders. With several contenders already in place in the party for the Malkajagri Lok Sabha constituency, the BJP has focused on strengthening the party in Hyderabad and surrounding areas.

Revanth Reddy had won the Malkajagri Lok Sabha seat on a Congress ticket in the last elections. Since Revanth Reddy is interested in the assembly elections, the BJP is confident that it can win from the Malkajagri Lok Sabha constituency.

According to the sources, a plan has been charted out for BJP to do better in the Telangana elections, BJP leadership is in favour of early elections or advocating Telangana elections along with the general elections in the country.

Karnataka poll: KCR eyes 40 Assembly seats with significant Telugu voters

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: In a bid to expand the activities of the BRS in Karnataka and Maharashtra, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has started the work of identifying assembly constituencies dominated by Telugu voters in the two states. After the announcement of the Karnataka Assembly elections, KCR sent teams of leaders to Karnataka and sought a separate report from some experts.

There are reportedly 40 assembly constituencies in 12 districts of Karnataka where Telugu voters have a decisive position. The success of any candidate will depend on their support. After the release of the notification for the Karnataka Assembly elections, KCR has given the responsibility of various areas of Karnataka to ministers, MLAs and MPs and will campaign in favour of JD(S) candidates in these 40 assembly constituencies.

The districts identified are Bellary, Kolar, Bangalore (Rural), Bangalore (Urban), Rachaur, Kapala Tumkur, Chitradurga, Chikalapura, Yadgiri, Bidar and Kalaburagi. These districts have a significant number of Telugu people migrating from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

    MS Education Academy

Most of the sections that influence the elections in Karnataka include Lingayats, Vokkaligas and SC/ST communities, but a significant number of Telugu voters are present in 12 districts. In view of the triangular contest between BJP, Congress and Janata Dal Secular in Karnataka, KCR has decided to support his ally Janta Dal Secular to prevent division of votes. BRS leaders will campaign in favour of Janata Dal-Secular candidates.

The number of assembly seats in Karnataka is 224 and in the 2018 elections, the candidates got the victory on 52 assembly constituencies with a majority of less than 5,000 votes. The state threw up a fractured mandate in 2018 elections with BJP emerging as the single largest party with 104 and the Congress won 87 seats while the JD(S) won 30. It is said that the Janata Dal-Secular’s tally will increase if Telugu voters support it.

The Election Commission announced that single-phase polls wil be held in Karnataka on May 10. The results will be declare 13 May.

‘Buckle up’: DeSantis escalates Disney dispute, eyes hotel taxes and road tolls

    [ad_1]

    florida legislature disney 13444

Disney “tried to pull a fast one on the way out the door,” DeSantis said earlier in the day during a breakfast hosted by the Midland County Republican Party of Michigan. “That story’s not over yet. Buckle up. There’s more coming down the pike,” he added.

The rapid escalation between Disney and DeSantis this week comes in the aftermath of a Central Florida governing board that had been controlled by Disney passing a series of agreements that ensured Disney would keep a large degree of power despite a new law passed in February that created a new board controlled by the governor.

The moves stunned the DeSantis administration and the governor’s hand-picked board, which has since hired lawyers to examine whether it should challenge the legality of the agreements

On Monday, the governor called on his chief inspector general to do a “thorough review and investigation” into actions he said “undercut Florida’s legislative process, and defy the will of Floridians.”

But his remarks on Thursday evening outlined that more immediate actions are pending. DeSantis also said that the new district he appointed would explore developing property it owns that is adjacent to Disney property. He also contended that the Florida Legislature was prepared to void the development agreement that had been approved by the outgoing board.

Disney representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment. But the company released a statement last week to media outlets stating that “all agreements signed between Disney and the District were appropriate, and were discussed and approved in open, noticed public forums in compliance with Florida Government in the Sunshine law.”

During a shareholders meeting earlier this week, Disney CEO Bob Iger called Florida’s actions retaliatory as well as “anti-business” and “anti-Florida.”

The discord between Disney and DeSantis began last year when the company opposed the state’s “parental rights in education bill,” which has been called the “don’t say gay” bill by its critics. DeSantis took action after company executives sharply criticized the bill and said they would work to repeal it.

Florida lawmakers, at the request of the governor, earlier this year passed legislation to overhaul leadership of the Reedy Creek Improvement District, the entity that has allowed the company the ability to operate its own government-like functions for more than 50 years on thousands of acres near Orlando.

That legislation came nearly a year after lawmakers pushed through a measure to dismantle Reedy Creek during a special session.

The probe by DeSantis’ chief inspector general comes while the Florida Legislature is midway through its annual legislative session. House Speaker Paul Renner has also contended that “all options are on the table” when it comes to Disney.

  • All eyes on how CWC will be formed at Congress’s plenary

All eyes on how CWC will be formed at Congress’s plenary

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The 85th plenary session of the Congress, which is being held on February 24 to 26 near Naya Raipur, will ratify the election of its President Mallikarjun Kharge, but the world outside will be watching closely how the new Congress Working Committee will be formed.

Congress leaders are wondering if the new President will hold the Congress Working Committee elections and pave the way for strong grassroots leaders to contest or will he continue with the nomination system prevailing during the presidency of his predecessor Sonia Gandhi.

The Congress has almost half the CWC members as elected and half nominated by the Congress President. However, their is a strong demand for the internal elections which was also part of the charter of demand when 23 Congress leaders wrote a letter to Sonia Gandhi for visible leadership.

In Raipur the party is likely to amend the Constitution apart from holding elections, but if the majority of the AICC members authorises Kharge to constitute the new CWC their could be no elections.

Apart from the CWC elections, the AICC members will be divided into six groups and each group will discuss, debate and come out with a resolution on various issues, including politics, elections and road ahead apart from crucial issues.

However, Party General Secretary Organisation has been non-committal on the CWC elections and has said to “wait and see”.

But when he announced dates of the plenary on January 2, he has said, “CWC elections will also be held during the plenary session.”

If there is election then many senior Congress leaders are willing to throw their hat to be in the CWC, but Shashi Tharoor, who is likely to be included in the new CWC, has reiterated that he is not going to contest the Congress Working Committee (CWC) election.

“I have already said that I am not interested in an election again and hence contesting, if an election to the CWC, is held is ruled out,” Tharoor said.

Asked if he expects to be nominated, he said, “I am not expecting anything,” and when further asked, if an election to the CWC is needed, he replied, “There have always been two opinions on this issue and the Constitution is also clear on it,” said Tharoor.

The Congress working committee (CWC) has 25 members, including the party president. Twelve are nominated by the party chief and the rest 12 are elected by the AICC members.

In October, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had set up a 47-member Steering Committee, which included his predecessors Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in place of the CWC.

However, the party is planning a grand welcome to Rahul Gandhi on the completion of Bharat Jodo Yatra and the Bharat Yatris may get nominated to the AICC.

The Congress this year will be contesting major elections in big states where it is directly pitched against the BJP. Starting from Karnataka, which has more than two dozen Lok Sabha members, followed by Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, the elections hold are a test for the Congress as well as the BJP. Congress is in power in two of the election-bound states.

  • Florida eyes more changes to voting laws ahead of 2024

Florida eyes more changes to voting laws ahead of 2024

    [ad_1]

    secretary of state appointment 46087

“The Department recommends building on the election integrity measures adopted recently to enhance the security of the vote-by-mail process,” states the report.

Some of the recommendations could trigger another partisan firestorm from Democrats suspicious of proposals taking aim at mail-in voting.

Republicans in Florida for many years had dominated mail-in voting in the state, but that shifted over the past few cycles, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. During the 2022 elections, about 2.7 million Floridians voted by mail, with 43 percent of the ballots cast by Democrats compared with 36 percent from Republicans.

Brad Ashwell, Florida director of All Voting Is Local, a voting advocacy group, called the proposals outlined by the department as largely “unnecessary” — though he did praise a recommendation for legislators to authorize the creation of a uniform vote-by-mail ballot request form.

“The voters are already being harmed by the last changes they made,” said Ashwell, noting recent changes such as one that forces voters to request a mail-in ballot after every general election and that increased identification requirements to request a ballot.

He added that it would also be “asinine” to order up additional revisions to mail-in voting ahead of the 2024 election when turnout could be much higher than it was during the midterms. He also suggested that prohibiting ballot requests by phone could be an obstacle to elderly voters and those with disabilities.

Since the 2020 election — where mail-in voting was repeatedly criticized by former President Donald Trump — GOP legislators in the Sunshine State have pushed through several changes to mail-in voting, many of them at the insistence of Gov. Ron DeSantis. Democrats and voting rights groups widely criticized a 2021 law that place a two-ballot limit on how many mail-in ballots someone could gather for elderly or sick voters.

DeSantis and Florida Republicans have refused to go along with suggestions to eliminate no-excuse mail voting, or allowing people to vote by mail without providing a reason. But they have made key changes such as banning the collection of more than two mail-in ballots from non-family members, a practice derided by DeSantis as “ballot harvesting.” Lawmakers also put restrictions on drop boxes where people drop off their ballots and required voters to renew their ballot requests after every general election. Parts of this law is still being challenged in federal court.

Last year, legislators contemplated requiring voters to add personal information — like a driver’s license number or the last four digits of their Social Security number to what they mail back to supervisors, a move that would have likely required voters to use an extra envelope. Currently, supervisors compare the signatures on the ballot envelope and what the voter has on file.

One Republican election supervisor called the initial proposal from GOP legislators a “recipe for disaster.” Legislators backed off the change and instead directed the Department of State to come up with recommendations on how to increase ID requirements.

In January, election supervisors across the state officially chimed in with their own report warning about making widespread changes.

A working group of Democratic and Republican supervisors submitted a report to the Department of State that said requiring voters to put their personal information on ballots would be a “seismic” change that would increase costs, confuse voters and potentially lead to identity theft as well as delays in counting ballots.

The final report from the department did not include any recommendations that voters be required to put identifying information on their ballot envelopes, opting instead to focus on the “ballot request process.”

Mark Earley, supervisor of elections for Leon County and head of the supervisors’ statewide association, told Department of State officials that local supervisors appreciated the “credence” given their concerns about potential identification changes. Earley, however, added that some of the recommendations could “pose challenges.”

In a brief interview Thursday, Earley said eliminating the ability to request ballots by phone “is going to hinder a lot of voters” though he said he understood the desire to create a paper trail for requests.
