AAP to launch ‘Modi Hatao, Desh Bachao’ campaign with eye on LS polls

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Sounding the poll bugle for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Aam Aadmi Party said it will kickstart a ‘Modi Hatao, Desh Bachao’ (Remove Modi, Save the Nation) campaign from the Jantar Mantar here on Thursday.

The party will hold a public meeting which will be attended by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann, AAP leader and city Environment Minister Gopal Rai said on Wednesday.

“Party workers and supporters from all over the country will gather for the meeting to be held on the martyrdom day of the country’s great freedom fighters Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev. Aam Aadmi Party will start a ‘Modi Hatao, Desh Bachao’ campaign during this meeting,” Rai said at a press conference.

The announcement comes a day after posters reading “Modi Hatao, Desh Bachao” appeared on walls and electricity poles across the national capital. With the Delhi Police arresting six people and registering 49 FIRs in connection with the posters, Rai said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scared.

“The prime minister is getting scared because of slogans like ‘Remove Modi, Save the Country’ being written on walls. Now the voice of the people of the country will not be suppressed by FIRs and arrests by police,” he said.

Rai said the country was facing grave danger. “The country got a Constitution, democracy, parliamentary system, Election Commission, independent agencies and a judiciary after a long struggle by freedom fighters. But after 75 years of independence, the freedom, democracy and the Constitution, which were achieved on the strength of those freedom fighters, are facing danger. Undeclared dictatorship has been implemented in this country,” he said.

  • Hyderabad’s L V Prasad Eye Institute wins Global Recognition; it has served 34.14 million people so far

Hyderabad’s L V Prasad Eye Institute wins Global Recognition; it has served 34.14 million people so far

    [ad_1]

In the din of politics, cricket and films a unique achievement of an Indian eye care Institution at the global level got swept into the background or virtually went unnoticed in the country.

The L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), Hyderabad has been ranked 8th globally in the area of Ophthalmology for 2023 by Scimago agency, a Spanish global ranking organisation. The ranking is based on research, technology innovation and social impact of the research output.

It’s significant to find LVPEI in the company of reputed Institutions like Johns Hopkins, Harvard University, Moorfields of London in the top 10 list. The LVPEI is the first Indian medical institute to find place in the top rankings in the field of research productivity.

Scimago Agency analysed data for the past 5 years of the best medical institutions to arrive at the 2023 rankings. The list is headed by Moorfields Eye Hospitals NHS Trust (UK), Johns Hopkins Medicine (US),   Singapore National Eye Centre, University of Miami Health System (US), Singapore Eye Research Institute, UCLA Health System, (US) and National Institutes of Health (US) and LVPEI (India). The next two are: US Dept of Health & Human Services and Institute National de la Sante et de la Recherche Medicare (France).

    A snapshot of achievements

In the last 35 years, since it’s starting in 1987 by Dr Gullapalli N Rao, the LVPEI has been making steady progress in both-providing top class eye care with social impact and undertaking research and introducing latest technology to stay among the best eye care institutions in India and worldwide.

A quick look at some of the key achievements of the Institute: approximately 34.14 million patients served so far. Of them 16 million were served free of cost. About 56,759 personnel trained. The Institute scientists/researchers have 4099 publications; 57 PhDs; 5 Bhatnagar Award winners and 3 Padma Sri awardees.

To expand its reach the LVPEI has set up a few satellite centres. Through them, it has been able to reach 12,193 villages. Overall, it has performed 1.93 million surgeries, 2029 stem cell based procedures, reached 4.92 million children and established a Cornea Bank with 1.19 lakh corneas of which 69, 964 transplants have been done, according to the Institute.

Asked about the significance of the ranking by the Spanish Agency, Dr Prashant Garg, the Executive Chair of the LVPEI said, “The announcement came as a pleasant surprise to us. It was heartening because we were told that the ranking was based on our consistent performance and impact that our research was making on society.”

The global recognition also corroborates the vision of the founder, Dr G N Rao on placing the highest importance to research right from the beginning along with eye care. Annually, the Institute has been publishing an average of 400 research papers.  Consequently, the LVPEI has been intensely focused on world class eye care with research, innovation and social impact as the driving forces, he said.

The institute has also been active in inter-disciplinary collaboration with global institutes. In this context it is pertinent to note that the LVPEI has been helping the Government of Liberia, Africa, in establishing eye care facilities, training Ophthalmologists and skilled technicians and guiding in the creation of both resources and manpower to run a good network to meet the country’s needs in the long term. The African continent has the lowest capabilities in eye care at present.

The LVPEI has established the entire range of eye care facilities in Hyderabad. It tries to be always ahead of the curve in bringing the best technology to its patients in myopia or stem cell therapy. Along with the Arvind Eye Hospital, Shankara Netralaya and the Rajendra Prasad Ophthalmology Institute, it is amongst the top few in the country.

Referring to the future areas of research work with an eye on social impact, Dr Garg said, “We have studied the new opportunities and needs of the region and identified 3-4 broad areas. These include: elderly eye care, inherited eye diseases, eye and the brain linked issues, applications of machine learning.” In addition, a major project is on in Odisha to study the unique eye problems of the tribals, he explained.

Failed kidney, blind eye: Rana Daggubati talks about his serious health issues

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Rana Daggubati is a real-life ‘Terminator’, not just a hot hunk with a towering personality. The Baahubali actor recently revealed his health issues, which included corneal and kidney transplants. Despite these obstacles, Rana has become a true inspiration to millions of his fans.

Rana revealed in an interview that he is blind in his right eye and can only see with his left. He sees the world through someone else’s eye, which was donated to him after he died. But this hasn’t stopped Rana from achieving his dreams and becoming one of India’s finest actors.

During the promotional interview of his latest movie ‘Rana Naidu’, the actor said, “Many people can get broken because of a physical problem and even it if gets fixed, there is a certain heaviness that will still be there. I had a corneal transplant, I had a kidney transplant so it’s like I am almost the Terminator. (laughs) So, I was like, ‘come on, I am still surviving and you just have to keep going’.”

Rana had revealed about his critical health issues during an appearance on a talk show in past, including high blood pressure, calcification around the heart, and failed kidneys. He admitted that he had a 30% chance of dying, but he faced it with courage and determination.

“Should I tell you one thing, I am blind from my right eye. I see only from my left eye. The one you see is someone else’s eye which was donated to me after his death. If I close my left eye, I can see no one. LV Prasad operated on me when I was young. Study well, we will support you, be courageous as you have to look after your family. Sorrows will go away one day but you have to gear up and keep your family happy always,” Rana Daggubati had said during one of his appearance on Gemini TV show in 2016.

Rana’s story demonstrates the strength of the human spirit and its ability to overcome even the most difficult obstacles. He encourages everyone to keep going regardless of what life throws at them and to always keep their family happy.

So, if you’re feeling down or struggling with your own problems, remember Rana’s wise words and keep going. “Sorrows may fade away one day, but you must continue, just like the Terminator.”

  • Politics over mafia don Atiq Ahmed as SP, BSP eye Muslim vote bank for 2024

Politics over mafia don Atiq Ahmed as SP, BSP eye Muslim vote bank for 2024

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: Both the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in Uttar Pradesh have been engaged in attracting the votes of the Muslim community, by softening their stand on mafia don Atiq Ahmed.

SP Secretary General Ram Gopal Yadav has come forward in support of Ahmed’s minor sons.

Yadav said that the police are unable to find the real accused in the Prayagraj incident and that there was pressure on them to catch and frame anyone. He added that Ahmed’s two sons were caught on the first day of the incident itself.

Yadav stated that it is suspected that one of them may have been killed. He said that the Constitution of India gives every citizen the fundamental right to life and the police cannot just apprehend someone and kill them, as that is a punishable offence.

The SP leader added that those who have done fake encounters will be prosecuted for murder.

He said that the culprits of Umesh Pal murder case should be punished severely but called the policies adopted by the state government destructive.

A senior SP leader said that the party, which has emerged as the largest opposition in the 2022 Assembly elections, does not want to lose the Muslim vote bank as the community has played a big role in strengthening it.

In the 2017 elections, 24 Muslim MLAs were elected, out of which 17 won on SP tickets, which increased to a total of 34 MLAs being elected in 2022, of which 31 were from SP.

BSP Chief Mayawati raised questions on the encounter of two of the four accused involved in the murder of Umesh Pal and said that the actions taken by the police in this matter have raised doubts within the minds of the people about the rule of law in Uttar Pradesh.

She questioned whether the government would repeat the ‘Vikas Dubey scandal’ to cover up its failures.

Mayawati added that the state government is under a lot of tension and pressure, especially regarding the law and order situation, over the murder of Umesh Pal in broad daylight.

She said that the whole country had its eyes on the state government on whether it would follow the rule of law or stop crime by killing criminals on the streets.

A BSP leader said that the party would perform well with the strong Dalit-Muslim alliance even if it does not team up with SP.

He added that Mayawati knows that better results cannot be achieved only on the Dalit votebank, therefore, after the setback in the Assembly elections, BSP has been trying to reconnect with the prominent Muslim community.

Significantly, the BSP was reduced to one seat and 13 per cent vote bank in the Assembly elections. Meanwhile, in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, 10 BSP MPs won when it was in alliance with SP, prior to which the BSP had zero seats in 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

One of the major reasons behind the BSP’s poor performance in the Assembly polls was believed to be the one-sided vote of the Muslims for the SP. Even after giving 89 tickets to Muslim leaders, none of them had won.

Political experts believe that SP got the Muslim vote bank in UP in bulk in the 2022 Assembly elections, but could not form the government. The party is now trying to save the votebank, which is why BSP leaders are giving such statements.

Mayawati has included the Muslim leaders in her party to bring the community’s votes in her fold, by campaigning with leaders like Shah Alam aka Guddu Jamali from eastern UP and Imran Masood.

New equations are seen getting formed over Muslim politics in the state, in such a situation, opposition parties will have to adopt new strategies to maintain their vote bank.

BJP state spokesperson Avneesh Tyagi said that SP-BSP has dressed criminals in political garb and have nothing to do with the public.

Adding that, the opposition parties raise questions when action is taken against the criminals, as they have been the patrons of mafias in the state.

Senior political analyst Yogesh Mishra said that the SP and BSP built their empire by taking in criminals and there is no big mafia in the state who has not been a part of these parties.

Mishra added that these parties are enchanted by criminals, which is why Mayawati and Ram Gopal Yadav are speaking in support of Atiq Ahmed.

He said that Yadav is standing in support of Ahmed despite knowing that SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav does not like him.

Mishra added that both the leaders are supporting Ahmed due to their personal interest of gaining minority votes.

  • With an eye on upcoming polls, Telangana BJP promises ‘bulldozer raj’

With an eye on upcoming polls, Telangana BJP promises ‘bulldozer raj’

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: With Assembly elections in Telangana only a few months away, BJP leaders are increasingly using the word bulldozer and promising to emulate the Uttar Pradesh model if voted to power in the state.

Last year, it had started with MLA Raja Singh, a controversial figure who has been booked on many occasions for hate speech.

Now, BJP’s state president Bandi Sanjay Kumar himself is promising bulldozer rule.

Sanjay, who is also a Member of Parliament, proudly speaks about the use of bulldozers by the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh. At public meetings, he is promising that if voted to power in Telangana, the BJP will follow the UP model.

Last week, he promised that if voted to power, the BJP will bulldoze the houses of those indulging in crimes against women.

Exuding confidence that the BJP will come to power in Telangana, he said it would follow the model of Uttar Pradesh which is using bulldozers to demolish the houses of offenders.

He was speaking at a day-long protest at the party office in Hyderabad against the increasing atrocities on women in the state.

Sanjay made the remark while referring to the death of Preethi, a MD student of Kaktiya Medical College (KMC), who committed suicide recently due to alleged harassment by her senior.

Since Preethi’s senior who was allegedly harassing her was a Muslim student, the BJP is trying to exploit the incident for political gains with an eye on the coming elections.

Bharatiya Janata Party leaders initially called it a case of love jihad. After the police denied that there was any communal angle or sexual harassment, Sanjay started alleging that the BRS government was siding with accused M. A. Saif.

Sanjay claimed that the government was acting in favour of the accused as it fears that the accused will cause communal riots.

The state government, however, has denied this. The ruling party leaders pointed out that the police acted swiftly to arrest Saif. “The government will not spare the guilty whether he is Saif or Sanjay,” remarked BRS working president and minister K. T. Rama Rao.

Bandi Sanjay, in his speech at the protest, only mentioned cases where the accused are Muslims and have links with the AIMIM.

Political observers say the BJP is looking for sensitive issues for polarising the voters on communal lines and it found one such issue in Preethi’s suicide.

By raking up such issues and speaking of bulldozers, the BJP appears to be building a narrative for the polls.

Last month, Sanjay threatened to demolish the domes of the new Secretariat building if his party was voted to power in the next elections. He says the domes reflect the culture of the Nizams and hence they will be demolished if the BJP comes to power.

The MP from Karimnagar is apparently trying to build a narrative which suits the party’s game plan to capture power.

BJP leaders have been targeting the BRS over its alleged policy of minority appeasement and its friendly ties with the AIMIM.

It is in this context that Sanjay faulted the design of the new Secretariat building to train his guns on the BRS and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.

Sanjay alleged that Rao has turned the Secretariat into a tomb like the Taj Mahal to please AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi.

“If the BJP comes to power, it will destroy the symbols of the Nizam’s culture in the state. We will make changes in the state Secretariat so that it reflects the Indian and Telangana culture,” he said.

The seven-storey structure with a built-up area of 7 lakh square feet was constructed at a cost of nearly Rs 650 crore is ready for inauguration.

Sanjay even challenged municipal administration and urban development minister K. T. Rama Rao to demolish mosques on the roads in the old city of Hyderabad, considered a stronghold of the AIMIM.

Sanjay has been making provocative statements.

He had allegedly delivered a hate speech in May last year. Police complaints were filed against him at various police stations in the state for making provocative remarks against mosques and madarsas.

Alleging that Muslim rulers in Telangana demolished several temples and built mosques over them, he demanded digging at all the mosques, saying there was a possibility of finding Shiva Lingams underneath.

The BJP MP also stated that if his party comes to power in Telangana, it will abolish all the madarsas, do away with reservation for Muslims, and remove Urdu as the second official language.

The saffron party has been trying to exploit sensitive issues for political mileage. Be it KCR’s friendship with Owaisi, four per cent reservation for Muslims, the state government not officially celebrating September 17, second official language to the state or the demand to rename Hyderabad as Bhagynagar, the BJP leaders have apparently always tried to look for issues which lead to communal polarisation.

The BRS is countering the BJP by calling it a fight between development and destruction. “We are for development while they want demolition and destruction,” said Rama Rao.

It was Raja Singh who first talked of bulldozers.

He had sparked a row in February last year with his tweet amidst the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in February.

The firebrand leader had released a video after the second phase of polling in Uttar Pradesh, threatening voters that if they don’t cast their votes for the BJP their houses will be demolished and they will be driven out of the state.

After the BJP retained power in Uttar Pradesh, Raja Singh made another controversial statement on the subject, this time targeting the BRS and the AIMIM.

He remarked that Union Home Minister Amit Shah was sending a bulldozer to Telangana. “The way Yogi ji used bulldozers against the mafia in Uttar Pradesh, under Sanjay’s leadership bulldozers will be used in Telangana definitely against these goondas and MIM. No goonda or mafia will be spared in Telangana,” he said.

A few days later, Raja Singh urged people to make a list of the TRS’s corruption, encroachments, properties etc so that these structures could be bulldozed.

“A strong bulldozer will come to Telangana too to tear down the corruption of TRS like Yogi Adityanath ji ended the mafia in UP. I appeal to the public to identify all the corrupt activities and encroachments on public and private properties, land of poor and farmers by the MPs, MLAs and ministers of TRS,” said the MLA.

Exuding confidence that the BJP will form the next government in Telangana, Raja Singh said the party was readying the bulldozers. “We are planning one for every constituency,” he remarked.

Some political analysts believe that while bulldozer politics apparently yielded the BJP good dividends in states like Uttar Pradesh, its impact in Telangana may be confined to a few urban pockets.
