  • With DeSantis running, foreign governments eye people in his orbit

For Qatar, Rubin’s firm helped facilitate meetings with government officials and provide PR assistance, first representing them in 2021. The firm also subcontracts out work to a progressive Florida-based communications firm, Edge Communications. The decision to renew the contract with Rubin, Turnbull and Associates gave the Middle Eastern nation continued access to one of the Republican Party’s most powerful and ascendant officials. Under the contract, which was filed with the Department of Justice, Rubin’s firm, which also counts a former DeSantis staffer among its ranks, is charged with government relations, communications, and public affairs “to advance the mutual interests of Florida and the State of Qatar.”

Rubin, whose clients include the cruise company Carnival (Florida had sued the CDC over rules for cruises), Google, and Southwest Airlines, did not return a request for comment. He’s been an established figure of the state’s GOP politics, having been a longtime friend and adviser to Florida Sen. Rick Scott. Rubin and his wife also served as co-chairs of DeSantis’ first gubernatorial inauguration in 2019. Beyond Rubin, Heather Turnbull, the managing partner at Rubin, Turnbull and Associates, also served on the inaugural host committee.

Foreign governments — like businesses or advocacy groups — have long turned to well-connected operatives and advisers as a way to push their interests before the government. Now, as the Florida governor emerges as the most viable GOP presidential alternative to former President Donald Trump, foreign entities are maneuvering to make sure that they had a line into his camp.

While in Congress, DeSantis was an outspoken critic of Qatar, signing onto an inquiry regarding enforcement of Qatari-owned Al Jazeera under the Foreign Agents Registration Act. He also wrote on Twitter that he pressed the Qatari ambassador to the U.S. about the country’s “support for Iran and for the Muslim Brotherhood.”

In a statement, Qatar’s embassy maintained that the renewal of Rubin’s contract was simply a routine administrative matter and the timing was unrelated to the DeSantis presidential announcement or “any other political considerations.”

“The Embassy works with advisors in many parts of the United States as part of its diplomatic outreach mission,” the spokesperson, Ali Al-Ansari, said in an email. “Qatar’s principal interests in Florida involve expansion of bilateral trade and investment. Rubin, Turnbull assists the Embassy in promoting those interests.”

A spokesperson for DeSantis did not return requests for comment.

On April 12, the government of Japan inked a deal with the firm of Brian Ballard, a Florida lobbyist considered part of DeSantis’ inner circle. Ballard served as a co-chair of DeSantis’ inauguration earlier this year. His firm also represents Liberia, Guatemala, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (and represented Qatar years ago).

Less than two weeks later, DeSantis and his wife Casey DeSantis visited Japan, where he met with Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Japan’s Foreign Ministry released its own statements touting the visit.

In an interview, Ballard maintained that his work for Japan is bipartisan and for both Florida and Washington. He noted that DeSantis’ trip was already scheduled when his firm was brought on. However, a partner at the firm, Adrian Lukis, who served as DeSantis’ chief of staff, joined DeSantis on the trade mission, Ballard said. Lukis is a registered agent of Japan.

Ballard did not recall any government inquiring about DeSantis and said his firm recently interviewed with a “large country” that did not ask about DeSantis in the hiring process (he declined to name the country). But, Ballard conceded, there could be more business opportunities to come when a Republican nominee emerges.

“When there’s nominees in place, it probably is a very smart thing for forward thinking governments to do,” he said of foreign administrations hiring lobbyists to help them understand candidates for office.

Ballard has been through this cycle before. He began lobbying Washington at the beginning of Trump’s presidency, cashing in on his connections to Trump, who had few formal Washington ties or former staff who had spread out among the K Street crowd.

Ballard was among a small number of Trump-connected lobbyists who saw a boost in business years ago at the dawn of his presidency. After President Joe Biden won office in 2020, it fueled a similar rush of hirings. In fact, theGROUP DC — the firm where Joe Biden’s former director of legislative affairs Sudafi Henry is managing partner — registered to represent the Embassy of Japan in April, just days before the president announced his reelection campaign.

Guardrails exist to prevent foreign interference in U.S. elections, including a ban on foreign nationals giving to campaigns. The Foreign Agents Registration Act, or FARA, compels lobbyists for foreign governments to make some of the details of their work public. Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort pleaded guilty for failing to register his work for the Ukrainian government under FARA, but he was ultimately pardoned by Trump.

More recently, the presidential campaign of Republican entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy employed consultants of the Saudi-funded LIV Golf. The campaign terminated those consultants after they filed as foreign agents.

The DeSantis orbit includes individuals who had previously worked on behalf of foreign entities but have, they said, since given up those clients.

Among those on that list is David Reaboi, a conservative personality who DeSantis’ team actively tried to recruit into his corner. His team hosted Reaboi and other influencers for an excursion that stopped at the governor’s office and mansion last year.

Reaboi has been registered as an agent of the Hungarian embassy since 2020. More recently, he has become a prolific pro-DeSantis commentator. However, he maintained to POLITICO that he has not done any work for Hungary since 2021, and even when he traveled to the country for CPAC about a year and a half ago, he had no contacts with government officials. Reaboi said he did not realize he had to file with the Department of Justice to terminate the relationship but he would do so.

Although she no longer represents the client, last year, DeSantis’ rapid response director Christina Pushaw back-registered as an agent of a Georgian and Ukrainian politician — Mikheil Saakashvili — for work between 2018 and 2020. Pushaw did so after being contacted by the Justice Department.

  • Red Roses eye records and Six Nations title for Middleton’s grand finale

Red Roses eye records and Six Nations title for Middleton’s grand finale

    [ad_1]

After eight years, 85 Tests, 76 wins and 3,411 points scored, England’s head coach Simon Middleton takes charge of his final match on Saturday. It should be quite a finale, with a world-record crowd for a women’s game in excess of 53,000 expected at Twickenham as the Red Roses go head-to-head with France in a winner-takes-all Six Nations decider.

The record currently stands at 42,579, set at the World Cup final at Eden Park in November. The attendance is also sure to smash the current Women’s Six Nations record, set last weekend with 18,604 watching France v Wales at the Stade des Alpes in Grenoble.

To more than double the record shows the progress not only the tournament is making, but the entire sport. The Twickenham crowd figure will hopefully act as a springboard for more avenues of progress and it will be a boost to the hopes of the Rugby Football Union who want to sell out Twickenham for the World Cup final in 2025.

Middleton – for whom a 53,000 attendance must have seemed unimaginable when he took the job in 2015 – has said the number of tickets sold has exceeded expectation and England’s vice-captain Zoe Aldcroft told the Guardian: “It shows how much the game has come on, to have a standalone match at Twickenham. For them to think we would sell that amount of tickets, even though we have gone over the amount they thought they would sell, it’s just amazing.

“I think my heart is going to be absolutely pumping. It is the adrenaline it will bring and obviously most of the crowd will be behind England so I think that is something we really have to take confidence in and put on a good performance because that is what they are coming to see. We want to make it a good event so it can happen again and again in the future.”

The crowd will be treated to a tight match if recent history is anything to go by. England came out 13-7 winners the last time the teams met in October at the World Cup and the Red Roses defeated France 24-12 in last year’s Six Nations. England have generally had the upper hand of late, however – the last time France beat their old rivals was in the 2018 Women’s Six Nations, coming out 18-17 winners, and the loss was the last time England were defeated in the competition. The Red Roses have been on a 23-match Six Nations winning run since. England have also been handed a boost ahead of the match with their captain Marlie Packer, the prop Hannah Botterman and No 8 Poppy Cleall ruled fit.

And while England will be favourites to win their fifth successive Women’s Six Nations, France could upset the Twickenham party. England’s biggest weakness, arguably, is their handling. They have made 69 handling errors in the 2023 tournament so far and they were exploited against Wales. The Red Roses’ mistakes in the first half saw Wales score points first and they held England from scoring until the 26th minute.

France could exploit the same weakness this weekend and if effective, England may not be able to rely on a rolling maul or an Abby Dow wonder try with France’s defence impressive in the tournament thus far. Les Bleues have conceded 29 points with only England conceding fewer. France will also have extra motivation to get the trophy win with one of their stalwarts retiring – the fly-half Jessy Trémoulière starts at 10 for her last ever match. The 30-year-old has won two Six Nations titles, finished third in three World Cups and was named Women’s 15s player of the decade by World Rugby in 2020.

England’s attack coach, Scott Bemand, is also leaving his role after the tournament alongside Middleton, for whom victory would mean a sixth Women’s Six Nations title. Middleton was the assistant coach when England won the 2014 World Cup and took over from Gary Street as head coach the following year. While Middleton did not manage to get his hands on the World Cup as head coach, losing in the 2017 and 2022 finals to New Zealand, he has overseen huge changes to the women’s game during his tenure.

    skip past newsletter promotion

In 2019, the Rugby Football Union introduced professional contracts for the first time which Middleton called a “massive opportunity” when they were awarded. Since professionalism was introduced to the team they have won every Six Nations, Middleton became the first women’s coach to be named World Rugby Coach of the Year and England set a new world record after going 30 games unbeaten.

Aldcroft spoke on the impact Middleton has had, not only on England but on the game more widely. “For us, for England, Midds has been absolutely huge,” the Gloucester-Hartpury player said. “The standards that he sets for the team and the drive that he gives us is unbelievable. It can only be from him how much we have achieved over the last few years. So he has been amazing for England rugby and women’s rugby in general.”

Middleton told BBC Sport this week: “There was always going to be an evolution process but hopefully I’ve been able to accelerate it. I’ve been clear on what I want for the squad and that is to try and get the very best support around them. Where the game is now is massively important to me and I’m very proud of the fact that we’re so in the public domain now, everyone wants to cover us and come and see us.”

  • ‘Look the monster in the eye!’ 11 things I learned from Matthew McConaughey last night

‘Look the monster in the eye!’ 11 things I learned from Matthew McConaughey last night

    [ad_1]

Two and a half years ago, I read Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey. Billed as the actor’s life story and “guide to livin’”, it is one of the wildest books I have ever read. Over 300 pages, McConaughey recounts his trials (runner-up in Little Mr Texas, 1977; receding hairline) and takeaways from the desert and the Chateau Marmont hotel in Los Angeles.

It is hugely entertaining, with McConaughey’s voice as distinctive on the page as it is on screen. But his guiding philosophy of “chasin’ greenlights” (signs from the universe to steam ahead) struck me as about as relatable as his abs. After all, this was a man who followed an ambiguous wet dream to two continents.

Even so, Greenlights sold more than 3m copies, stayed on the New York Times bestseller list for 65 weeks and was widely hailed for its “outlaw wisdom”. (The owner of my local coffee shop says it changed his life.)

McConaughey, meanwhile, was transformed from an actor most famous for How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days and the chest-beating scene in The Wolf of Wall Street to one of those celebrities of substance who get urged to run for office.

So, when McConaughey announced that he would be expanding on “the art of livin’” in a first-of-its-kind, livestreamed virtual event, I gave over my Monday night to catchin’ those greenlights I had missed the first time round.

Watch the event on YouTube – if you’re sure you’re ready.

Invest in yourself – even pretend money

After I sign up, a steady stream of emails signed “McConaughey” urge me to set alarms, take notes and “go all in”. “Pretend like you paid $10,000 … though this event is free, it’s WORTH that much.”

When I join the YouTube livestream, more than 250,000 people are already there, including those who did pay – for the VIP “camera-on experience”, to be connected with McConaughey himself. Their faces appear in a grid behind the perky presenter, who is urging us all to stretch, smile and close any distracting tabs in our browser. I didn’t pay, so she can’t see me cooking dinner.

At last, McConaughey appears, introduced as a “thought leader” and a “guy who has been journalling for over 30 years”. He is playing a conga. In the VIP grid behind him, a woman raises her hands above her head in joy.

    There are no answers

Nearly 400,000 people are watching on YouTube, but there is no studio audience, leaving McConaughey to perform, with unrelenting intensity, directly into the camera. An appreciative atmosphere is simulated with canned laughter and applause.

Audience participation is encouraged in the chat, however, and being beamed to McConaughey on stage. We are asked to begin messages with his star-making catchphrase: “All right all right all right”. The thread moves too quickly to read.

McConaughey says he will be expanding on Greenlights, going “deeper and even more practical”. Some people worry, he says: “How do I know if a greenlight is just a battery-powered flash in the pan, or some timeless, solar-powered green light I can rely on?”

He can’t promise answers – “My appetite may be your indigestion” – but he can help us to pose the right questions, to “chart a course on life’s highway that leads us to the ultimate destination”.

    Death, I think, immediately.

“The life we love,” says McConaughey. This event is supposed to be four hours long.

The art of livin’ starts with admittin’

The word “self-help” is conspicuously absent. Instead, there are references to “self-growth, self-exploration and self-development” and many metaphors, often car-related.

To begin, McConaughey asks us to set aside judgment of ourselves and others, “to clear the lane” between head and heart. “The art of livin’ starts with admittin’ – if we want to be legit, we gotta first admit. Yeah, I just rhymed. Guilty. I do that. All the time!”

He asks us to “name, claim and declare” what brought us here today. The chat lights up; McConaughey reads some responses aloud as he bangs his drum. “‘I want a better life’ … ‘I want to be a better husband’ … ‘I’m lonely’ … ‘I want to keep growing’ …” McConaughey’s drumming quickens. “‘I want to be a better MOM!’”

Don’t hole yourself up in your echo chamber

McConaughey at the White House in 2022

People who make you feel safe – your tribe – “may also keep you small”, he says. Aligning on political beliefs, or against others’ perspectives or opinions, is often a false source of identity: “Just some passive-aggressive, counterpunch, default bullshit!”

Wild-eyed, McConaughey exhales and steps back from the camera. “Guilty – I said no judgin’. Couldn’t help myself.”

But, he adds, winningly: we could at least try to put ourselves in other people’s shoes. “It doesn’t mean we have to quit wearin’ our shoes.”

    Keep on running

Our greatest strengths can also be our greatest weaknesses, says McConaughey. “That one just came to me, like, six months ago.”

His own example is resilience: “I fall down, I get up … I step in a pile of shit – I keep running.”

But, McConaughey goes on, he can be so quick to dust himself off that he makes the same mistakes. “I step in the same pile of shit every time around the bend, because I never stop to take inventory of just where that pile of shit that I keep stepping in was … I never take the time to ask: ‘Why do I keep stepping in the same pile of the shit?’”

He continues this metaphor for an unbelievably long time and returns to it three hours later.

Sweep up the crumbs of your past

When McConaughey was 11 and living in a trailer park, his dad told him that his mother was on an extended vacation in Florida. Twenty years later, McConaughey learned that his parents had actually been divorcing for the second time.

“Dad thought it was best for me not to know, and I gotta say: he was right,” McConaughey says. “And besides – they got remarried for the third and final time anyway. True story!” The automated audience hollers.

Everyone tells white lies, says McConaughey, “but those lies leave crumbs in our past – crumbs that we are eventually going to have to sweep up”.

He enacts a scenario of escalating deceit with such energy and conviction that I am left convinced that I have told a lie and forgotten about it, and will shortly be caught out. He is actually a really good actor.

    You, too? McConaughey, too

McConaughey tells the story, familiar from Greenlights, of becoming famous overnight (well, 72 hours) thanks to 1996’s A Time to Kill. Shaken to his core by the attention, he sought out a monastery in the desert and counsel from a resident monk.

Over four and a half hours, McConaughey unburdened himself to Brother Christian, who never said a single word.

Finally, after McConaughey found himself with no more anguish to expend, Brother Christian leaned in. He said: “Me, too.”

“With those two words, Brother Christian invited me back to the human race,” McConaughey tell us.

He invites us to speak our fears aloud – “to confess”. Then he comes up close to the camera. “Me, too.”

We’re supposed to be sweatin’ in our boots

We’re too old to be afraid of the dark, says McConaughey. He entreats us to “shake those damn nursery rhymes … to quit turning our dreams into these damn nightmares”.

After all, what is it, really, lurking under our beds? Could it be our fear of failure?

“We have to look the monster in the eye and hold that son of a bitch’s eyes,” says McConaughey. “I’m tellin’ you: don’t blink. If you hold its gaze, it’s gonna bow and it’s gonna HEED … ”

Big break … watch the trailer for A Time to Kill.

And if we don’t, well: “That son of a bitch starts growin’, like a shadow on the wall.” He almost howls: “As we REcede, it PROceeds!”

McConaughey tells us to post our fears in the chat – “if you dare”. He then reads them aloud, banging the drum, accompanied by some bluesy guitar. “Alcohol … age, rejection, my past! Divorce, control … mental health! My finances! My father!” I imagine this is what Johnny Depp’s band sounds like.

McConaughey concludes on the fear of “not being able to pay my bills”. “Amen,” he adds, his hands in the prayer position. “It’s not easy, is it?”

    Be grateful, achieve greatness

McConaughey urges us to embrace our individual talents – “something you do pretty darn well on a consistent basis”, be it caring for your children or telling jokes. “Maybe you’re a great whistler!” He whistles a jaunty tune to canned laughter.

Whatever it is, McConaughey says, “have more GRATITUUUUUDE for it”.

“The recipe for your particular secret sauce is under the hood of what you do WELLLLL, not what you don’t. Start trying to be great at what you’re good at, instead of good at what you’re bad at.”

This is, in fact, good advice. I feel invigorated, despite myself.

Trust just a little bit more

McConaughey retells the story of the wet dream – in which he was floating down the Amazon, naked, watched for some reason by “African tribesmen” – acknowledging that it is “peculiar and ironic”.

His point turns out to be about learning to trust ourselves and each other. We live in a world where distrust has become our default position, says McConaughey.

The findings of a study last year, which said fewer than 30% of people trust their neighbours, seem to cause him physical pain. “Aww, jeez – that’s gross,” he says, his hands at his temple.

“I don’t believe we are ever going to truly move forward, individually or collectively, without having more trust.” Again, I agree!

He proposes that we agree to try to trust “just 5% more” and see where it leads us. He calls it “The 5% More Trust Coalition”.

Merge on to the highway – but there’s a toll charge …

For nearly two hours, McConaughey has not stopped moving, rhyming, drumming, singing, all with seemingly the utmost sincerity. It has been unexpectedly mesmerising – somewhere between the actor’s studio and a new-age preacher.

By now, I am riled up. I am ready to start livin’.

But, for some, this new commitment to trusting and risk-taking is shaken by what happens next. This live event that we have all been part of, makin’ history for the past few hours, is revealed to be a promo for Roadtrip: The Highway to More – McConaughey’s new “immersive learning experience”.

Basically, it is an online course – and a great deal, we are told (not by McConaughey, but by one of his partners in this endeavour, the celebrity entrepreneur and business author Dean Graziosi). Normally $4,507, today only it is $397!

As we are shown a 10-minute commercial, I am surprised to see people in the chat – who have just unloaded their fears and dreams on to McConaughey, and heard him sing them back – almost uniformly raging against the hard sell. “What a long commercial,” writes one. “This is America,” writes another.

I have no doubt the course will make a gazillion dollars, all the same. That the organisers don’t turn off the chat, now being flooded with angry and crying emoji, suggests they think so, too.

  • IPL 2023: DC, SRH eye collective batting effort

IPL 2023: DC, SRH eye collective batting effort

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Their first win secured, Delhi Capitals would expect more from their batters when they take on a stuttering Sunrisers Hyderabad, who will be eager to return to winning ways, in the IPL here on Monday.

The Capitals have had a tough season so far. They have struggled in all departments and, as a result, lost five games on the trot.

However, David Warner and his troops finally managed to eke out their maiden victory as they scrapped their way to a four-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday.

    MS Education Academy

The bowling unit got its act together and put up a stellar display to restrict KKR to 127 but the Delhi batters, barring skipper Warner and deputy Axar Patel, failed once again as the hosts huffed and puffed to the win.

Much was expected of Prithvi Shaw and Mitchell Marsh but the two have been huge letdowns so far this season.

Scores of 12, 7, 0, 15, 0 and 13, in the six outings have highlighted Shaw’s inability to tackle pace and spin, and a quick-fix is unlikely.

Australian all-rounder Marsh has also had a woeful run with the bat, that includes two ducks in the four games and a high score of four. He hasn’t fared well with the ball either, and it is to be seen if the management persists with him or the likes of Rovman Powell and Rilee Rossouw are given another chance.

With the young Indian batters struggling, the onus is also on Manish Pandey, a seasoned campaigner, to bat more responsibly in the middle so that Axar has the freedom to play the big shots towards the end.

While the Capitals have a lot of work to do, there are a few positives they can build upon.

Playing his first game of the season, veteran Ishant Sharma bowled a brilliant spell, turning back time. He bowled with accuracy and produced inward movement to fashion the team’s first win.

Ishant was complemented well by the rest of the Delhi bowlers, who had been underwhelming so far.

Under the scanner for his below-par strike rate, skipper Warner also looked at his fluent best against KKR. He will hope to continue in similar vein against his former team, come Monday.

Sunrisers Hyderabad have slumped to back-to-back defeats after it seemed their campaign had taken off. They currently occupy the penultimate spot on the table with four points from six games.

The Orange Army has looked good on paper but their batting has failed them. Their batters have neither been able to chase nor put up a good total in the previous two games they lost.

With plenty of match winners in the side, they would hope to get their campaign back on track.

    Squads (from):

Delhi Capitals: David Warner (c), Prithvi Shaw, Sarfaraz Khan, Aman Hakim Khan, Abhishek Porel (wk), Axar Patel, Khaleel Ahmed, Kuldeep Yadav, Rovman Powell, Rilee Rossouw, Anrich Nortje, Mustafizur Rahaman, Chetan Sakariya, Mukesh Kumar, Phil Salt, Lungi Ngidi, Praveen Dubey, Lalit Yadav, Ripal Patel, Vicky Ostwal, Ishant Sharma, Manish Pandey, Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Yash Dhull.

Sunrisers Hyderabad: Aiden Markram (c), Abdul Samad, Rahul Tripathi, Glenn Phillips, Abhishek Sharma, Marco Jansen, Washington Sundar, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Kartik Tyagi, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, T Natarajan, Umran Malik, Harry Brook, Mayank Agarwal, Heinrich Klaasen, Adil Rashid, Mayank Markande, Vivrant Sharma, Samarth Vyas, Sanvir Singh, Upendra Yadav, Mayank Dagar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Akeal Hosein, Anmolpreet Singh.

    Match starts: 7:30pm IST.

  • DeSantis wants to make it easier to execute criminals — with an eye toward SCOTUS

DeSantis wants to make it easier to execute criminals — with an eye toward SCOTUS

    [ad_1]

The two death penalty measures are just a part of a series criminal justice bills that DeSantis called for ahead of this year’s session. He sharply criticized the Parkland jury decision that resulted in Cruz getting a life sentence, but in a running series of appearances to promote his book ahead of an expected presidential run, he also lashed out at blue states and “soft-on-crime” prosecutors operating in other parts of the country.

“We are holding people accountable,” DeSantis told Republicans gathered Thursday morning at a Lincoln Day breakfast held in Akron, Ohio. “We reject soft-on-crime polices like eliminating cash bail or jailbreak legislation that lets dangerous criminals out of jail before they have finished their sentence. We see the plague across the country of left-wing district attorneys getting elected.”

Republicans with an eye toward running for president see fighting crime as a good issue for them, after the message resonated with voters in the midterms. Former Vice President Mike Pence on Friday, for example, called for mass shooters to be executed within months.

DeSantis’ record on criminal justice is something that allies of former President Donald Trump have already hit the governor on. They criticized him for signing a bill in 2019 that raised the amount that must be stolen for someone to be charged with a felony. The Make America Great Again PAC last month claimed that “while President Trump is the only presidential candidate calling for the death penalty for drug dealers, DeSantis is giving a pass to thieves.”

DeSantis’ criticism of prosecutors and crime policies isn’t new. Last August, he suspended Hillsborough County State Attorney Andrew Warren from office after Warren signed a pledge where he stated he would not enforce the state’s abortion laws, among other things. Warren, who was elected to office, is challenging his suspension in both federal and state court, contending that he was removed for political reasons.

After carrying out two executions in his first term, DeSantis has now signed three death warrants so far this year. The execution of Louis Gaskin, who had been dubbed the “ninja killer” and was convicted of killing a couple in 1989, went ahead this past week. Darryl Barwick, who was convicted of murdering a Panhandle woman in 1986, is scheduled to be executed May 3.

The death penalty legislation, however, would likely place Florida into a high-stakes legal debate over criminal punishment in the nation and could eventually wind up before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Currently, Alabama is the only state that actively imposes the death penalty and doesn’t require a unanimous jury recommendation. But Alabama requires at least 10 out of 12 jurors to agree to the death penalty, while the proposal Florida lawmakers passed on Thursday would allow the death penalty to be imposed by a vote of 8-to-4 or greater.

Supporters of the measure have repeatedly cited the example of Cruz — who gunned down 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018 — as a reason to make the change. Three jurors in his case voted against recommending the death penalty nearly five years after the tragedy.

“If a monster like that who commits heinous crimes does not deserve and get the death penalty than what do we have a death penalty for?” said Sen. Blaise Ingoglia, the GOP sponsor of the measure.

Ingoglia’s bill is on its way to the governor’s desk after the Florida House voted 80-30 on Thursday in favor of the legislation. The Senate approved the bill last month by a 29-10 vote.

The Florida House this week also approved another death penalty measure that would allow eight of 12 jurors to recommend the death penalty for someone who rapes a child under the age of 12. The legislation includes a clause that says state and federal court decisions that barred the death penalty in these types cases was “wrongly decided and an egregious infringement of the states’ power to punish the most heinous of crimes.”

“If you commit a serious crime, you’re going to face the consequences of your actions,” House Speaker Paul Renner said. “While diversion and rehabilitation are important to providing individuals who come in contact with the justice system an opportunity to correct their behavior, people must be held accountable.”

Both death penalty measures have drawn support from many Democrats, including Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book. Book’s district includes Parkland, and she was a member of the school safety commission created in the aftermath of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas.

Book called the Cruz decision a “gross injustice.” She acknowledged that the legislation could help DeSantis during a presidential run, but added that his national ambitions have been the overarching theme of this year’s legislative session.

“Everything coming out is to help him to do something he wants to do and further his agenda,” Book said.

Some Democrats, however, questioned pushing bills that appear at odds with current state and federal court rulings.

“It’s a dangerous, slippery slope,” argued state Rep. Mike Gottlieb, a South Florida Democrat and criminal defense attorney, about child rape bill.

Republicans contend that changing from a unanimous jury to a supermajority should pass constitutional scrutiny, but Renner and other GOP legislators concede that the law regarding rapists could likely wind up before the nation’s high court.

But they pointed out that the previous Supreme Court decision striking down the death penalty for child rapists was handed down by a 5-4 majority, including from liberal justices who are no longer on the panel. The 2008 decision at the time was criticized by both Barack Obama and John McCain as they campaigned for president.

“This is not murder — it’s worse,” said state Rep. Danny Alvarez, an attorney and Republican, during debate on the bill. “When you rape a child, you kill that child’s spirit. That rape lasts with every moment that child closes their eyes. And you tell me ‘oh it doesn’t meet the standard.’…If you will not rise with a child you will fall with the rapist … there should be no debate.”

  • Whitmania: Dems eye Michigan gov’s sister for battleground House race

Whitmania: Dems eye Michigan gov’s sister for battleground House race

    [ad_1]

Reelected last year as a Board of Education trustee for the Katonah-Lewisboro school district, Gereghty graduated from Duke University’s business school and serves as a small-business consultant. She’s a neophyte to congressional politics, though. And she’s unlikely to have the field to herself.

Democrats see the Hudson Valley seat as one of their best pickup opportunities in next year’s election, given that the district remains deeply blue — voters there favored President Joe Biden by 10 points in 2020 — despite the GOP’s gains during last year’s midterms. It’s still early in the cycle, but party strategists say recruitment here and in several other New York battlegrounds will be their top priority for 2024.

The New York-based seats are of particular interest to House Democratic leaders, given their Biden-friendly lean and proximity to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ district.

House Majority PAC has already signaled it’s willing to spend heavily in the state, and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has singled out Lawler’s seat among several other New York districts that the party aims to flip next year to try to return to the majority. And Jeffries, along with Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.), has called for an after-action report on the 2022 elections in New York and the party’s shortcomings.

Republicans remain confident in Lawler, however, given his high name ID and lifelong roots in the community. They expect the first-term incumbent to attract plenty of party support — fundraising and otherwise — ahead of next November in light of his high-profile win last year.

Asked about the potential challengers, a spokesperson for Lawler’s campaign said the New York Republican is focused on policy issues like reducing congestion pricing, lifting the SALT cap and bringing down energy prices. “His focus is, and will continue to be, serving the people of the Hudson Valley and getting things done that improve their quality of life,” said Chris Russell, Lawler’s chief strategist.

On the Democratic side, some more familiar names could enter the mix against Lawler. Former Rep. Mondaire Jones (D-N.Y.) has publicly expressed interest in a run but is still undecided, according to two people familiar with his thinking.

Jones is likely to make a decision in the next month or two, one of those people said. (Jones represented a large part of the district before it was redrawn in 2022, though he ultimately ran and lost for a New York City-based district instead.) He has stayed active in local politics and is set to headline a local party dinner later in April.

“I’ve been encouraging him to run. I think he can win it and we can take that district back,” said Rep. Susan Wild (D-Pa.), who is a friend of Jones. “I really, quite honestly, think he got the short end of the stick in 2022.”

Former Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.), the onetime DCCC chief who lost the seat by roughly 1,800 votes last November, also hasn’t ruled out a bid, according to a person close to him. Several Democratic members and strategists, though, were privately skeptical he would jump into the race.

So far, Gereghty is generating perhaps the most buzz among New York political circles. While she has a limited public presence so far, her sister, Gretchen Whitmer, is one of the most popular figures in Democratic politics and won reelection in a swing state last year by 11 points.

Since redistricting reforms gave Democrats control of both chambers of Michigan’s state legislature and the governorship for the time in 40 years, they have been on a legislative tear, enacting protections for LGBTQ residents and anti-gun violence laws as well as codifying abortion rights.

And Gretchen Whitmer isn’t the family’s only political stalwart: Their father served in the administration of former Gov. William Milliken, a Republican, and her mother was a state assistant attorney general. Her family is also close to the Dingells, including Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.), who has been helping Gereghty with the early stages of her New York run.

The Detroit Free Press reported in 2020, as the governor’s star began to rise, that Gereghty saved Whitmer’s number in her phone as “The Woman from Michigan” — a reference to the derisive nickname that Gretchen Whitmer earned from then-President Donald Trump.

Michigan, the Whitmers’ home state, is known for its political dynasties, such as the Levins, the Conyers, the Dingells and the Kildees. But the Mitten isn’t alone there: Indiana GOP Rep. Greg Pence captured an open congressional seat in 2018 while his brother Mike was serving as vice president. And Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) served in Congress with his brother, Lincoln. On top of that, countless children have replaced their parents in office.

But famous relatives don’t always propel their families to electoral success. One recent example: Levi Sanders, the son of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), was trounced in a 2018 Democratic primary for a New Hampshire House seat.
