Excise scam: Court extends Manish Sisodia’s judicial custody till May 23

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Monday extended AAP leader and former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s judicial custody till May 23 in connection with the Delhi excise policy case being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The ED has alleged that Sisodia was the mastermind behind the entire excise policy case and that he had deliberately leaked the policy to the co-accused to generate financial kickbacks.

Sisodia is currently in judicial custody.

The ED had arrested Sisodia on March 9 after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested him on February 26 this year.

Last month, Special CBI Judge M. K. Nagpal of Rouse Avenue Court had denied bail to Sisodia, holding that the evidence, prima facie, “speaks volumes” of his involvement in the offence.

Last week, High Court judge Dinesh Kumar Sharma sought the ED’s response to Sisodia’s bail plea and another application seeking interim bail on the ground of his wife’s ill-health and listed the matter for further consideration on May 11.

In the case being probed by the CBI, Delhi court extended Sisodia’s judicial custody till May 12

New Delhi: Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) chief, Vikram Dev Dutt has directed Go First to provide refunds to passengers who have booked tickets on the airline’s cancelled flights within the time frame prescribed by the regulations.

Meanwhile, Go First has also responded to the DGCA’s show cause notice, which was issued on Tuesday after the airline cancelled flights without any prior notice due to a lack of funds and its voluntary bankruptcy filing.

In response, the airline stated that it is working to provide refunds or rescheduling options for passengers who have already booked to fly with them.

    MS Education Academy

According to a DGCA official, Go First informed the DGCA that they have filed an application under Section 10 of the Insolvency Bankruptcy Code (IBC) before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).

The airline also stated that it has suspended scheduled flight operations for three days starting from Wednesday and will take further action based on the outcome of the application before the NCLT.

After examining Go First’s response, the DGCA chief issued an order under the current regulations instructing the airline to process refunds for passengers within the prescribed timelines.

The DGCA official added that the organisation is committed to reducing passenger inconvenience caused by Go First’s sudden decision to suspend operations without any prior notice.

Go First has extended the cancellation of its flights until May 9, following its voluntary bankruptcy filing.

The airline had initially cancelled flights on Wednesday and Tursday, but it subsequently extended the cancellation to Friday.

Saudi Arabia extends deadline for Makkah Haj housing

    [ad_1]

Riyadh: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Haj Pilgrims Housing Committee in Makkah has extended the deadline for issuing housing permits until May 20.

The committee said that the relevant requests will continue until the end of the current month of Shawwal, which is expected to end on May 20.

The committee urged real estate owners interested in renting their homes for this purpose to review approved engineering offices to finalize the permits, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

    MS Education Academy

Applications are submitted by engineering offices accredited by Makkah Municipality and Civil Defence, who will examine those buildings to ensure they meet the required safety and health conditions.

As part of this process, the committee asked the owners who are interested in renting out their houses to accommodate pilgrims to comply with all safety requirements and apply for permits as soon as possible.

In December 2022, the committee began receiving applications for permits for buildings to be approved to house pilgrims for the upcoming Haj season and has since extended the deadline several times.

Haj pilgrimage to Makkah is a mandatory religious duty that must be performed by those Muslims who are physically and financially able to perform it at least once in a lifetime.

Saudi Arabia has announced that the minimum age for this year’s Haj is 12-year-old as the number of pilgrims returns to pre-pandemic levels.

Delhi court extends Sisodia’s ED custody in excise policy case

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A court here on Saturday extended former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia’s custody till May 8 in connection with the excise policy case being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

On Friday, Special Judge M.K. Nagpal of the Rouse Avenue Court had denied bail to Sisodia holding that that the evidence, prima facie, “speaks volumes” of his involvement in commission of the offence.

The judge had also said that the purported medical condition of Sisodia’s wife was not a reason to grant him bail in this case.

    MS Education Academy

Additionally, he stated that it was impossible to rule out the potential of Sisodia influencing key witnesses in the case.

The judge noted that the alleged offence against Sisodia was a “serious economic offence of money laundering” and that he has not been accused of committing the offence in his personal capacity, but rather in his official capacity as a public servant overseeing the Excise Ministry and serving as Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister.

On Thursday, the same court extended Sisodia’s judicial custody till May 12, in the case being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The ED had earlier submitted before the judge that Sisodia had planted fabricated emails to show that there was public approval for the policy.

The directions to send these pre-drafted emails were given to Zakir Khan, Chairman of Delhi Minorities’ Commission, who then asked his interns to send the emails, the ED claimed.

The probe agency had also said that the 60 days given to complete the investigation against Sisodia are not over yet.

It said that it has found fresh evidence indicating Sisodia’s involvement in the alleged scam, and the investigation is at a crucial stage.

    [ad_1]

Ranchi: The High Court of Jharkhand on Friday extended the stay on a notice by a local judicial magistrate to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for personal appearance in a case filed against him for allegedly maligning BJP leader Amit Shah.

Gandhi has moved the high court praying for setting aside the criminal proceedings initiated against him by the magisterial court in Ranchi.

Justice Ambuj Nath, while hearing the petition, directed that no coercive steps be taken against Gandhi till further orders of the court in this regard.

    MS Education Academy

The high court on February 3 first put a stay on the notice for appearance of Rahul Gandhi before the court of the magistrate in Ranchi the next day.

He was ordered to appear before the magistrate in a complaint case filed against him by Navin Jha, a BJP member in Ranchi.

Jha in his petition has alleged that Gandhi had maligned BJP leader Amit Shah in a speech he made in Chaibasa before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Jha had filed the complaint on April 24, last year before the court of Ranchi Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate which was dismissed.

Thereafter, Jha filed a revision petition before the court of the Ranchi Judicial Commissioner which was allowed and the matter was remanded back to the court of the sub-divisional judicial magistrate.

WFI sexual harassment: KTR extends support to protesting wrestlers

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president and Telangana IT minister KT Rama Rao on Friday took to social media to announce his support for the wrestler’s protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.

The minister gave a call to stand with the top Indian wrestlers who are protesting against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chairman and other coaches, accusing them of sexually abusing female wrestlers.

The minister said in a tweet, “We celebrated when these Olympic champions brought Glory to our Nation. Now let’s stand with them and express our solidarity as they fight for justice”.

    MS Education Academy

Seven female wrestlers have filed a sexual harassment case against federation leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh at Central Delhi’s Connaught Place police station.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Delhi Police, told a Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha that the FIR would be registered on Friday.

However, they continued their agitation and demanded that the BJP MP be removed from all the positions he holds.

Vinesh Phogat said it took Delhi Police six days to file an FIR and they don’t trust the probe agency.

“It (Police) might file a loose FIR. We we will see, observe then take a decision (on calling off protest). He should be behind the bars and removed from all the posts he holds, otherwise he will try to influence the investigation,” World Championship medallist Vinesh said.

KTR said in the tweet, “The serious sexual harassment allegations against the chief of wrestling federation should be probed impartially and justice delivered”.

The justices are mulling whether a ruling from the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals should go into effect or whether it should be blocked while further appeals proceed.

If allowed to take effect, the 5th Circuit’s April 12 ruling would suspend various policies the FDA has enacted since 2016 to make mifepristone more accessible — including telemedicine prescription, mail delivery, retail pharmacy dispensing and the approval of a generic version of the drug. The ruling also would scale back the approved “on label” use of the drug from 10 weeks of pregnancy to seven weeks — before many patients know they are pregnant.

The appeals court suggested its ruling was a middle-ground approach because it did not go along with a Texas federal judge’s order to suspend mifepristone’s registration altogether.

However, the FDA and the two drug companies that make mifepristone told the Supreme Court that the 5th Circuit’s ruling could amount to a nationwide ban of the drug because of lengthy delays in returning to labeling and protocols that have not been required for years.

Anti-abortion medical groups that are challenging the drug disputed that characterization, saying the ruling would reimpose important safety restrictions on the drug.

Alito acted single-handedly because he oversees emergency appeals from the 5th Circuit. It is not a clear signal about how Alito or the other justices will ultimately vote on whether to allow the 5th Circuit’s ruling to go into effect.

Excise policy scam: Delhi court extends Sisodia’s judicial custody by 2 weeks

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A court here on Monday extended former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s judicial custody by two weeks in connection with the excise policy case being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Before the bench of special judge M.K. Nagpal of the Rouse Avenue Court, the ED had earlier submitted that Sisodia had planted fabricated e-mails to show that there was a public approval for the policy.

“We have evidence that Sisodia had e-mails planted. These have been received not only in the official e-mail account of the Excise Department but even in his personal e-mail account. The content of the e-mails was given by Sisodia which suited his agenda,” the counsel for the ED had told while opposing the bail plea.

    MS Education Academy

“Fabricated e-mails were sent to show that there was a public approval of the policy. This is a sham approvala Illegal ecosystem was created to give benefits to the liquor cartels in lieu of kickbacks.”

The ED’s special public prosecutor Zoheb Hossain had then told the judge that the agency wanted to show him the case diary.

To this, Sisodia’s counsel had said that it should not be done so in secrecy.

“Sealed cover business should go. If something is used against me to deny me my libertya If they are relying on something behind my backa It should be put to me as well,” the counsel said.

However, the probe agency said that the 60 days to complete the investigation against him are not over yet.

The ED said: “We will put it to you after 60 days.”

The court then adjourned the hearing in bail matter for Tuesday.

On April 5, the ED had informed Judge Nagpal that it has found fresh evidence indicating Sisodia’s involvement in the alleged excise scam, and the investigation is at a crucial stage.

The court had extended AAP leader’s custody till April 17 in this case.

On March 21, Sisodia had moved a plea seeking bail plea in ED’s case.

After the CBI arrested the AAP leader on February 26, the ED also arrested him in the same case on March 9.

The probe agency had earlier claimed that within a span of one year, 14 phones have been destroyed and changed, and that Sisodia has been evasive from the start.

Israel extends closure of Palestinian territories amid tensions

    [ad_1]

Jerusalem: Israel has announced that all crossing points of the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip would remain closed until Thursday for security reasons.

Entry permits to Israel for working purposes or for Ramadan prayers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem during the period will be canceled, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement issued by Israel’s Defence Minister Yoav Gallant on Saturday.

It was decided upon “an operational situation assessment” that the closure, originally planned to be lifted overnight on Saturday, will be in place until the end of the week-long Jewish holiday of Passover, according to the statement.

    MS Education Academy

Gallant also instructed the defense establishment to allocate more resources and soldiers to enforce the activities of the Israeli police.

The decision came after two deadly attacks which Israel deemed as acts of terror by Palestinians. On Friday, two British-Israeli sisters were killed and their mother seriously injured in a drive-by shooting attack in the West Bank Jordan Valley. At night, an Arab citizen of Israel rammed his car at a group of tourists at Tel Aviv’s coastal promenade, killing an Italian tourist and injuring seven others.

Tensions have been high in the region following Israeli police raids at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, triggering clashes with Palestinian worshippers, and sparking a fresh round of cross-border strikes between Israel and Gaza militants earlier this week.

Israel seized the West Bank and Gaza Strip in the 1967 Middle East war and has continued to control these territories, where Palestinians hope to establish their future state.
