  • Biden calls Israel’s Netanyahu to express judicial plan ‘concern’

Biden calls Israel’s Netanyahu to express judicial plan ‘concern’

    [ad_1]

    biden israel 31394

The White House in statement added that Biden “underscored his belief that democratic values have always been, and must remain, a hallmark of the U.S.-Israel relationship, that democratic societies are strengthened by genuine checks and balances, and that fundamental changes should be pursued with the broadest possible base of popular support.”

“The President offered support for efforts underway to forge a compromise on proposed judicial reforms consistent with those core principles,” the statement said.

Netanyahu said Sunday the legal changes would be carried out responsibly while protecting the basic rights of all Israelis. His government — the country’s most right-wing ever — says the overhaul is meant to correct an imbalance that has given the courts too much power and prevented lawmakers from carrying out the voting public’s will.

Critics say it will upend Israel’s delicate system of checks and balances and slide the country toward authoritarianism. Opponents of the measure have carried out disruptive protests, and has even embroiled the country’s military, after more than 700 elite officers from the Air Force, special forces, and Mossad said they would stop volunteering for duty.

The conversation followed a Sunday meeting in Egypt between Israeli and Palestinian officials in which they pledged to take steps to lower tensions ahead of a sensitive holiday season. Administration officials praised the outcome of the summit in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. A joint communique said the sides had reaffirmed a commitment to de-escalate and prevent further violence.

Biden in the call “reinforced the need for all sides to take urgent, collaborative steps to enhance security coordination, condemn all acts of terrorism, and maintain the viability of a two-state solution,” according to the White House.

The Israeli and Palestinian delegations met for the second time in less than a month, shepherded by regional allies Egypt and Jordan, as well as the United States, to end a yearlong spasm of violence.

  • MPs have unhindered rights to express views in Parliament: LS Speaker Birla

MPs have unhindered rights to express views in Parliament: LS Speaker Birla

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Sunday said all lawmakers enjoy the “unhindered right” to express their views in Parliament, making a strong rebuttal of Rahul Gandhi’s recent claims that the opposition was not allowed to speak in the House.

Birla was addressing the 146th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Manama, Bahrain.

“In India, we have a robust participatory democracy and a vibrant multi-party system where hopes and aspirations of citizens find expression through the elected representatives. All members enjoy the freedom to express their views and thoughts in Lok Sabha,” he said.

Birla’s remarks come in the wake of Gandhi’s claims at a function in London that the voice of opposition leaders was stifled in Parliament. Gandhi made the comment during an event organised by veteran Indian-origin Opposition Labour Party MP Virendra Sharma in the Grand Committee Room within the House of Commons complex.

In his address, the Lok Sabha speaker said Parliament of India has always held extensive and meaningful debate and deliberations on contemporary global challenges such as climate change, gender equality, sustainable development and the COVID-19 pandemic.

He emphasized that global institutions propagating peace, harmony and justice were crucial for peace, prosperity, sustainability and a just world order.

In this context, Birla said there was a broad consensus among many nations to bring about reforms in the UN Security Council to reflect the realities of a rapidly changing world order.

“Reform of the UN Security Council cannot be delayed any further,” the Speaker added.

He said it was crucial that the subject was included in future global agendas so that “we could contribute more and more in addressing challenges such as climate change, sustainable development, poverty, gender equality and terrorism”.

Highlighting the country’s readiness to fulfil its global obligations, Birla said India carried out the world’s largest vaccination programme against COVID-19 for its citizens.

At the same time, India also helped other nations in their respective fights against the pandemic by providing medical equipment and vaccines under ‘Vaccine Maitri’, he added.

  • More trouble for Kuntal Ghosh as 2 arrested middlemen express interest to turn approver

More trouble for Kuntal Ghosh as 2 arrested middlemen express interest to turn approver

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: More trouble seems to be brewing for arrested youth Trinamool Congress leader Kuntal Ghosh, who acted as a middleman in the multi-crore teacher recruitment scam in West Bengal, as two other middlemen arrested in this case have expressed interest to turn approver in the matter.

Sources said that counsel of the two middlemen — Tapas Mondal and Niladri Ghosh — have started initial communication with the central agencies on this count.

However, neither of the two central agencies, the ED and the CBI, has given any indication that they will accept the proposal of the two accused middlemen to turn approver so far.

Explaining that the process of turning approver for an accused is a lengthy one, senior counsel of the Calcutta High Court, Kaushik Gupta, said that Section 306 of CrPC has provisions on this count.

“First, the investigating body has to accept the plea from the accused to turn approver after examining the pros and cons of the development and also the probable future legal complexities arising out of the development. But mere acceptance of the investigating agency does not complete the process and guarantee pardon for the accused turning approver.

“The investigating agency will then seek the permission of the court concerned where the matter is being heard. The judge will take the final decision on this count after recording the reasons for doing so and other legal angles in the matter,” Gupta explained.

On Thursday, a special CBI court had extended the judicial custody of Kuntal Ghosh, Niladri Ghosh and Tapas Mondal till March 23.

A division bench of Justice Debangshu Basak and Justice Md. Shabbar Rashidi, while granting the bail of the 11 accused Maoists, questioned whether the investigation agency is not aware of the fundamental rights of the accused.

According to the bench, it is a matter of shame the legal formalities and even the process of integrating the witnesses is yet to be completed even after 13 years since the incident took place.

“Do not forget that even the accused persons have fundamental rights. They cannot be locked behind the bars for years without trial. All of them have spent over 10 years behind the bars with the trial process being yet to be completed,” Justice Basak observed.
