Apple India retail store to boost overall ecosystem experience for users: Experts

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Apples own brick-and-mortar store in India will further strengthen the overall experience of being in an Apple ecosystem for its fans in the country, experts said on Wednesday.

With its own branded retail store — the first one being opened in Mumbai this month — Apple will be able to control end-to-end user experience which will further take its brand image to another level.

“We have seen many stories around the world about consumers sharing positive purchase experiences from the Apple branded stores and India will be no different,” Counterpoint Research Director Tarun Pathak told IANS.

    MS Education Academy

Apple has finally lifted the curtains off its much-awaited own branded retail store at Jio World Drive Mall in Mumbai, officially marking the upcoming opening of Apple BKC.

Inspired by the iconic ‘Kaali Peeli’ taxi art unique to Mumbai, the Apple BKC creative includes colourful interpretations of the decals combined with many Apple products and services that will be available for our customers to discover.

According to Counterpoint data, Mumbai contributed 10 per cent of iPhone sales and the second largest for Apple, after Delhi, in 2022.

Over the past couple of years, Apple’s India strategy has been coming along well, including increased domestic manufacturing, aggressive marketing and affordability initiatives, and the success of the Apple India Online store.

“Offline retail continues to be critical for all consumer tech companies in a large, diverse market like India. Indian Consumers love to touch, feel and explore the products, before making their purchase considerations,” Prabhu Ram, Head, Industry Intelligence Group, CMR, told IANS.

Interestingly, the premium smartphone segment in India has been growing in double digits.

“The Apple-owned flagship retail stores come with favorable tailwinds, and are a critical lynchpin in Apple’s bid to win the India market. Apple’s retail stores globally set a standard in terms of consumer experience, staff knowledge and expertise, and the service standards, beyond products,” Ram noted.

Apple will launch a retail store in New Delhi at a later date.

Apple sold 2 million iPhones in India in the holiday quarter (Q4) of 2022, registering 18 per cent growth (quarter-on-quarter) for its flagship device.

The India market share of iPhones reached 5.5 per cent for 2022, an 11 per cent growth (year-on-year).

  • Trump thinks Manhattan judge hates him. Too bad, experts say.

Trump thinks Manhattan judge hates him. Too bad, experts say.

    [ad_1]

But experts said there’s no legal basis to bar Merchan from presiding.

“If there were some facts showing that the judge had become irrational or infuriated then there might be an argument, but simply having sat in these other cases is not grounds for disqualification,” said Steven Lubert, co-author of “Judicial Conduct and Ethics.”

Still, the appearance of bias — something judges try to avoid — persists, according to two court insiders in New York.

A former assistant district attorney in Manhattan who is now a criminal defense lawyer said he was surprised Merchan would oversee District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s prosecution of Trump for charges related to a 2016 hush money payment.

“I don’t think it’s really a great move on the part of the court system to assign the same judge,” said the former prosecutor, who was granted anonymity because he has cases before Merchan.

“I am just shocked that the chief judge doesn’t preside over a case of this significance. The former president getting indicted calls for the chief judge of the court to handle it,” he said, referring to Ellen Biben, the criminal court’s administrative judge.

Biben is also the former head of the New York State Joint Commission on Public Ethics, a one time New York State inspector general and served as a special deputy attorney general for public integrity.

Trump claimed in the Friday Truth Social posting that Merchan was “hand picked by Bragg & the Prosecutors.”

But the Manhattan district attorney’s office has no role in selecting judges. Instead that responsibility lies solely with the court system. Merchan is expected to be the trial judge for the Trump case because he was the judge overseeing the grand jury that voted to indict the former president Thursday afternoon.

A New York court official, who was granted anonymity to discuss internal processes, said judges are picked to oversee grand juries randomly through an assignment wheel. If the grand jury produces an indictment, the judge who has been overseeing the grand jury then handles the ensuing trial, the official said. It was coincidental that Merchan handled both the Trump Org. trial and the grand jury that examined the hush money matter, this person said.

David Bookstaver, former communications director for the New York State Office of Court Administration, said in an interview that Biben, in consultation with others — including the state court system’s chief judge, Tamiko Amaker — could assign a different judge to the case.

Merchan is indisputably experienced. He was first appointed to the New York County Supreme Court — which is what New York state calls the trial court in Manhattan — in 2006 by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and moved to the criminal court in 2009. Before becoming a judge, he served for seven years as an assistant attorney general in the New York State Attorney General’s Office and before that as an assistant district attorney in Manhattan.

Several lawyers and other court officials who know Merchan said he’s got the right temperament for the job.

“He is very calm and balanced in his management of his courtroom,” said leading criminal defense lawyer Stacey Richman, who has handled several cases before Merchan.

But a second criminal defense attorney agreed that Merchan’s handling of all of the Trump-related cases makes it look like the fix is in, even if it isn’t.

“It appears to me the judicial system ought to get a little more random,” said the second defense attorney, who was also granted anonymity since he practices before Merchan.

While Trump’s defense team may bring a motion for Merchan to recuse himself, it’s probably a nonstarter.

“It’s entirely up to the judge, who will reject a recusal motion,” said Stephen Gillers, a professor at New York University Law School who specializes in judicial ethics.

“That is not a decision that Trump can appeal now. If there’s a conviction then the defendant, Trump, can argue this motion should have been granted,” Gillers explained.

Gillers said the most important thing is that Merchan has the “confidence of his colleagues and an ability to run the case.”

Frank Rothman, who’s practiced in Manhattan Criminal Court for 37 years, said Merchan enjoys that confidence.

“He’s a very thorough guy, even keeled,” Rothman said. “Treats people with respect, no bullshit kind of guy.”

Erica Orden and Wesley Parnell contributed to this report.

    Jahangeer Ganaie

Srinagar, Mar 29: Experts and people in Kashmir have urged government to take steps for preservation of fossil sites and use them for promotion of tourism.

Mudasir Ahmad a geology expert and vocational trainer from Kulgam told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that tourists rarely visit Aherbal and other sites during lean season but these fossil sites can be promoted as alternate ourist destinations.

“There is need to conserve these fossil sites as these sites are potential resources in every respect and every organization must come forward to preserve them,” he said.

Gulam Ahmad another expert told KNO that fossil sites are very rare but fortunately few sites were discovered in Kulgam district recently and there is a need to preserve them.

He said that the government must take cognizance at the earliest and take immediate steps for its preservation and promotion as it will help us in getting more resources.

Experts said that the sites can be preserved with a little care and they can provide a lot of information about our rich geological past to the future generations.

  • Rahul Gandhi will not be disqualified as MP if conviction stayed: Experts

Rahul Gandhi will not be disqualified as MP if conviction stayed: Experts

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi can escape disqualification as a member of parliament if the appellate court suspends the conviction as well as the two-year jail term awarded to him by a Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his alleged “Modi surname” remarks, legal experts said on Thursday.

Senior lawyer and constitutional law expert Rakesh Dwivedi referred to the apex court’s 2013 and 2018 judgements in the Lily Thomas and the Lok Prahari matters respectively and said suspension of sentence and stay of conviction were necessary to escape disqualification as a lawmaker under the Representation of the People (RP) Act.

“The appellate court can suspend the conviction and the sentence and grant him bail. In that case there will be no disqualification,” he said, adding “However the politicians must choose their words carefully to avoid getting entangled with law.”

The debate over possibilities of Gandhi being disqualified as an MP must take note of the legal position enumerated in the apex court judgements and the relevant provisions of the RP Act, he said.

Meanwhile, sources said the Lok Sabha Secretariat will take a call on whether there was a case for Gandhi’s disqualification after examining the court order and issue a notification, announcing vacancy in the lower house.

A former senior official of the Election Commission and an expert on electoral laws who did not wish to be named was of the view that to prevent being disqualified as a lawmaker, Gandhi also needs to get his conviction stayed.

He said suspension of sentence was different from suspension of conviction.

“The position as per the Lily Thomas judgment, a conviction which carries a sentence of two years or more will automatically result in disqualification. In a later judgment in the Lok Prahari case, the apex court said on appeal if the conviction is suspended, the disqualification will also remain suspended,” he said.

He said the Congress leader will have to get a stay on conviction also from a higher court.

P D T Achari, former Lok Sabha Secretary General and Constitution expert, said the disqualification period begins as soon as the sentence is announced. He said Gandhi is free to appeal and if the appellate court stays the conviction and the sentence, then the disqualification will remain suspended.

The disqualification continues six years after the sentence is completed or served. “That means the disqualification will last for eight years (in case he is disqualified),” he said, adding that a disqualified person can neither contest, poll or vote for a certain period.

He was of the opinion that disqualification arises out of sentence, not conviction alone. “Therefore, if the sentence has been suspended by the trial court itself, that means his membership does not get affected. The disqualification has not come into effect,” he said.

In the Lok Prahari case, a three judge-bench of the top court, of which CJI D Y Chandrachud was also a part, in 2018 had termed as “untenable” the disqualification if the conviction of a lawmaker is stayed by an appellate court.

“It is untenable that the disqualification which ensues from a conviction will operate despite the appellate court having granted a stay of the conviction. The authority vested in the appellate court to stay a conviction ensures that a conviction on untenable or frivolous grounds does not operate to cause serious prejudice. As the decision in Lily Thomas has clarified, a stay of the conviction would relieve the individual from suffering the consequence inter alia of a disqualification relatable to the provisions of sub-sections 1, 2 and 3 of Section 8 of the RP Act,” the 2018 verdict had said.

In 2013, the top court, in the Lily Thomas case, had struck down section 8(4) of the RP Act that gave a convicted lawmaker the power to remain in office on the grounds that appeals have been filed within three months of conviction.

The Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government, in 2013, had attempted to circumvent the Supreme Court ruling to set aside a RP Act provision.

It was Gandhi who had opposed the ordinance in a press conference here and tore the ordinance in a press conference as a token of protest.

According to a provision of the RP Act, a person sentenced to imprisonment of two years or more shall be disqualified “from the date of such conviction” and remain disqualified for another six years after serving time.

Section 8 of the RP Act provides for offences in which a lawmaker would entail disqualification upon conviction.

The provision divides the offences in several categories that attract disqualification upon conviction.

In the first category are offences that entail disqualification for a period of six years upon any conviction.

If the punishment is a fine, the six-year period will run from the date of conviction, but if there is a prison sentence, the disqualification will begin on the date of conviction, and will continue up to the completion of six years after the date of release from jail.

Offences like making speeches that cause enmity between groups, bribery and impersonation during elections and other electoral offences, offences relating to rape and cruelty to women by husband and latter’s relatives are included in it.

Offences under the Protection of Civil Rights Act, Customs Act, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act etc are among the category of offences that entail disqualification regardless of the quantum of punishment.

Laws for prevention of Sati, corruption, terrorism and insult to national flag and national anthem etc are also part of this group.

All other criminal provisions form a separate category under which mere conviction will not entail disqualification and a sentence of at least two years in prison is needed to incur such disqualification.

  • Himalayan region including J&K vulnerable to earthquakes: Experts

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, Mar 22: Stating that Jammu & Kashmir among many areas are highly vulnerable to earthquakes, the experts here on Wednesday said that instead of panicking, there is a need to come up with earthquake resistant human infrastructure that leads to the loss of lives and damage to the properties.

Pertinently, an earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale occurred on late Tuesday night in Jammu and Kashmir, triggering panic among the people.

Talking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), a prominent Seismologist, Prof. Ghulam Jeelani (Department of Earth Sciences, University of Kashmir), said that nobody can prevent earthquakes anywhere across the globe as it is a natural phenomenon, which would continue to take place.

“J&K being one among the regions that are highly vulnerable to the earthquakes would witness jolts again and again. Whenever the stress accumulates, the energy gets generated and thus gets released in the shape of earthquakes,” he said.

He added that no one can stop the occurrence of earthquakes, but there is a need to come up with the human infrastructure, which is earthquake resistant. “It is a fact that no one loses life due to earthquakes, but it is the human infrastructure that leads to the loss of lives as well as the property damage. Once people opt for taking all preventive measures while constructing their buildings, such incidents will also stop,” he said.

However, he said that there is a need to follow dos and don’ts in spirit during earthquakes to ensure safety.

As per the reports, around 60 earthquakes will hit J&K and Ladakh in 2022. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) data shows that J&K parts have felt tremors 9 times in March, 2023 so far.

Prof Shakil Romshoo, an earth scientist, told KNO that the entire Himalayan region, including Jammu and Kashmir has been historically vulnerable to earthquakes.

He said that the region has witnessed several mega earthquakes in the past. “Therefore, the government, civil societal and individuals should work hard to build a culture of disaster preparedness in the society in order to minimise human and infrastructure damage in the eventually of a high magnitude earthquake,” he said—(KNO)

  • Aggregators can’t wash hands off truant ‘delivery partners’: Legal experts

Aggregators can’t wash hands off truant ‘delivery partners’: Legal experts

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: In February this year, Delhi’s Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission issued a notice to delivery company Dunzo for alleged sexual harassment by its delivery partner, who showed up drunk at a womans address at midnight and later even threatened her over WhatsApp to withdrew her complaint.

The bench of Raj Kumar Chauhan and Dr Rajendra Dhar issued a notice to Dunzo following a complaint seeking Rs 50 lakh damages for negligent hiring and alleged sexual harassment by a delivery partner.

The complainant Rahella Khan was represented by lawyers Abhishek Yadav and Ankita Wadhwa.

In her complaint, Khan had stated that she had placed an order and a Dunzo delivery partner had showed up in a drunk condition at her address at midnight and abused her. After two days, he sent her a text message asking her to withdraw her complaint.

Khan also alleged that the man then harassed her and sent her murder and rape threats. He even used extremely profane language. The man even sent her photo of some girls which he claimed to have murdered while warning her that she would be next.

The complainant had even sent a legal notice to Dunzo, who in response, blamed her for contacting the delivery partner directly.

Not getting any response or action from Dunzo, Khan had filed a police complaint on which an FIR was also registered.

“Such behaviour amounts to ‘deficiency in service’ and amounts to a ‘consumer dispute’ under the Consumer Protection Act, which was rightly raised before an appropriate Consumer Commission,” Gurmeet Nehra, legal scholar and Member, Supreme Court Bar Association, said.

“This is welcome decision coming from Delhi State Consumer Dispute Resolution Commission to award damages of Rs 50 lakh to meet the mental agony and deficiency in services.”

This is not the first case. In January this year, a three-member bench of Dr Rajender Dhar, Ritu Garudia, and Raj Kumar Chauhan of a District Consumer Forum in Delhi had issued notice to Zomato on a complaint alleging sexual harassment by company’s delivery partner.

The complainant, in her plea, stated that she had suffered enormous trauma in the form of sexual assault, physical harassment, and mental and emotional breakdown as a result of grave misconduct by the delivery agent hired by Zomato without a background check.

“Despite the complaints by the complainant, no efforts whatsoever were made to reach out to the complainant or provide the complainant with any resolution or help,” the plea added.

“It takes a lot of courage for the victims of sexual assault to come forward and report the incidence and since Zomato categorically asked to follow up and get back twice the Complainant waited but no heed was ever given,” the plea read.

The plea further stated that the chat window was closed by displaying the issue as ‘resolved’ to create a worrying situation. It was also stated that Zomato’s inaction and willful default towards the complainant, is liable to compensate for the deficiency in services, harassment, time wastage, mental agony, litigation expenses, and immense suffering caused.

According to the plea, the details of the delivery agent provided on the Zomato app and the actual agent who arrived to deliver the food differed. This was discovered later, and no photo was uploaded to the app, which could have aided in the identification of the accused, the complainant stated.

“Sending threatful text messages to the victim who is consumer of their services is a criminal offence under Indian Penal Code. State has rightly lodged FIR and should promptly initiate criminal proceedings against the culprit who intimidates the victim with death and rape threats,” Nehra said.

Furthermore, the plea stated that after receiving a call from the investigation officer requesting the identification of the delivery agent, the complainant went to the Police Station to do the same and identified the delivery boy. Thereafter, the delivery executive admitted to using his brother’s Zomato account to make all of the deliveries, the plea alleged.

The complainant, represented by advocates Pragya Parijat Singh, Harshita, and Shivank, moved the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Delhi (Mehrauli), seeking compensation of Rs 20,00,000 for the agony, trauma, and harassment, both physical and mental, she endured.

Nehra further said: “A crime is an offence against the society and such culprits not only brings bad name to the company but they are threat to peaceful living and law-abiding citizens, specially women and children who are vulnerable sections of society. Such mental agony suffered can not be compensated in terms of money. If no timely action is taken this time against such accused then in future such people can pose serious threat to others.”

The complainant has also sought an unconditional and unqualified apology, by way of writing a letter and acknowledging the omissions on the parts of the opposite parties. Additionally, she has sought direction to them to pay the cost of litigation.

Stricter laws are surely needed but companies should also make sure they follow proper guidelines while hiring employees, say experts.

“There is a concept called master-servant liability. Master-servant liability extends as much as the work. If the servant is doing some work told by the master, during working hours, then the master is liable. But on the other hand, if the intentions were only of the servant’s, that person would be liable for criminal activity and not the company till the time it’s proven that the company was also playing a part in the conspiracy,” Rishabh Raj, a Supreme Court advocate, said.

Raj added: “In the coming era of gig economy and the rise of many delivery companies, there is a need for a law which states exactly who would be liable for such activities. Are we having a character clearance certificate, police verification of the person whom we are hiring, or even their criminal background data and previous job profile. There should be some guidelines made by the government so that these mobile-based delivery companies should be following to verify this person even if they are working for a short term.”

  • Collapse of Silicon Valley Bank to impact Indian startup ecosystem: Experts

Collapse of Silicon Valley Bank to impact Indian startup ecosystem: Experts

    [ad_1]

Washington: The collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, the largest vendor in the startup ecosystem, is likely to adversely impact the Indian startup scenario as well as it has injected a lot of uncertainty in the sector overnight, industry experts say.

“Hopefully the matter will get resolved, but I think it is a big hit for Indian startups,” Ashu Garg, a prominent Silicon Valley-based venture capitalist and early-stage investor for over two decades, told PTI in an interview.

California-based Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), the 16th largest bank in the United States, was closed on Friday by the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation which later appointed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) as its receiver.

The FDIC, in a statement, said as of December 31, 2022, the Silicon Valley Bank had approximately USD 209.0 billion in total assets and about USD 175.4 billion in total deposits. At the time of closing, the amount of deposits in excess of the insurance limits was undetermined. The number of uninsured deposits will be determined once the FDIC obtains additional information from the bank and customers.

“The reality is that the Silicon Valley Bank has been a real supporter of the Indian startup scene and has provided banking services. Most Indian startups that do business in the US use this bank because it is one of the few institutes willing to work with the Indian banks. A lot of the banking institutes do not want to work with overseas customers,” Garg, an alumnus of IIT Delhi, said.

“So, SVB has been able to work with the Indian companies that do not have US employees. So if they (are gone), it will be very problematic for the Indian (companies),” he said in response to a question.

Over the past several years, SVB has been one of the most preferred choices of banking for startups and tech industry in the Silicon Valley, mainly because of its understanding of the industry and flexibility in many aspects suiting the startup ecosystem.

Given that every third startup in the Silicon Valley is founded by Indian-Americans, experts feel a significantly large number of these founders would be impacted as early as next week in terms of even making basic payments and giving paychecks to their employees.

Similarly, a large number of Indian startups which do not have even an employee or an office in the US had opened up their accounts in the Silicon Valley Bank as it let them do so without much regulatory questions and with a customer-friendly approach.

The implications of the collapse of SVB on Indian-Americans and their companis are very serious, Garg said.

“The Silicon Valley Bank is the largest vendor to the startup ecosystem. So now you have all these loans. You do not know what is going to happen if the loans get sold and get called.

“Besides, a lot of fintech also depends on the Silicon Valley Bank… So you probably saw Rippling, which is a payroll company, unable to issue payroll because their underlying bank is the Silicon Valley Bank. It also has potential implications for the banking system in the US and the rest of the world,” the venture capitalist said.

A group of Silicon Valley-based venture capitalists after a meeting to discuss the aftermath of the bank’s downfall said the events that unfolded over the past 48 hours have been deeply disappointing and concerning.

“In the event that SVB was to be purchased and appropriately capitalised, we would be strongly supportive and encourage our portfolio companies to resume their banking relationship with them,” it said in a joint statement released by Indian-American Navin Chaddha, an early stage investor.

” SVB has been an early partner for many of our companies at Battery Ventures through the ups and downs of company building. The last 48 hours unfolded in ways we could have never imagined, but now is the time to back our partners and we strongly support our companies working with SVB as and when we have more clarity on their path forward,” he said.

Indian-American Congressman Ro Khanna, who represents Silicon Valley in the House of Representatives, said the FDIC needs to investigate short sales over the past few months by executives, and at minimum, there should be a clawback with penalties of profits made.

“This should go to non-profits like Sunnyvale Community Services who are worried about losing SVB deposits and paying mortgages,” he demanded.

Indian-American presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy said the American taxpayers should not bail out the likes of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

“If you want to make deposits at the Silicon Valley Bank, that is your business. But I did not hear the tech industry’s intelligentsia calling for bailouts of East Palestine last month,” he said.

Meanwhile, Indian-American Rohit Chopra, the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, is tasked with protecting the consumers interest in the case. He is also one of the FDIC directors.

  • Red meat, refined sugar, spicy food linked with colorectal cancer: Experts

Red meat, refined sugar, spicy food linked with colorectal cancer: Experts

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Excessive consumption of red meat, refined sugar, and spicy food increases the risk of colorectal cancer, as per experts.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data, colon cancer is the fourth most prevalent cancer in Indian males and the fifth most common cancer in Indian women.

Dr Sandeep Nayak P, Director – Department of Surgical Oncology and Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru states that Indian colorectal cancer scenario is different from that of the West.

“We have more rectal cancer (64 per cent) than colonic cancer (36 percent). Incidences are the exact reverse of this. This could be due to genetic differences between the Indian and western populations. However, what this means is that many more patients would be offered a permanent stoma (bag to drain stools) than in the west,” Dr Sandeep Nayak P. states.

“It is well established that diet affects the risk of colorectal cancer. In a study that I conducted between 2003 and 2005, I found consumption of red meat, refined sugar, and spicy food increased the risk of colorectal cancer,” Dr Sandeep Nayak explains.

Subsequently, many international studies showed similar results. The World Health Organization has declared refined sugar and processed meat like sausages as carcinogens (cancer-causing agents). This is an important development as many food items use a large quantity of sugar to improve the taste. People should be careful about what they eat.

Dr Sandeep Nayak stated, unlike colon cancer, rectal cancer requires a distinct treatment plan. In most cases, radiation therapy is required before surgery for the rectal. By having this procedure, the anus is typically saved and a persistent stoma is avoided. Stoma can be avoided in more than 75 per cent of rectal cancer patients as per many researches that have been conducted.

However, it is unfortunate to note that most patients end up with a permanent stoma as the skills required to perform this sphincter-saving surgery called ISR are lacking in most of the centers. We need to build the skill among the surgeons to perform such complex work. In the past two years, we have performed more than 50 ISRs, and the patients are happy to have their natural passage saved, he explained.

Dr Pragna Sagar Rapole S, Consultant – Radiation Oncology, CARE Hospitals, HITEC City, Hyderabad, states that colorectal cancer is a serious disease that can have devastating effects on the lives of those who are affected by it. It is a type of cancer that develops in the colon or rectum, and it can be fatal if not diagnosed and treated in a timely manner.

Fortunately, there are many steps that individuals can take to reduce their risk of developing colorectal cancer. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle by eating a balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, and avoiding unhealthy habits like smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can significantly lower the risk of developing this disease, Dr Pragna Sagar explains.

It’s important to note that although colorectal cancer is a common disease, it is not always easy to detect. Symptoms may not appear until the cancer has progressed, making early detection even more critical, Dr Pragna warns.

That’s why it’s essential for individuals to discuss screening options with their healthcare provider and be vigilant about any changes in their digestive health. By taking proactive steps to reduce risk factors and undergoing regular screening, individuals can take charge of their health and reduce their risk of developing colorectal cancer. Remember, early detection and prevention are key in the fight against this disease, Dr Pragna advises.

Dr Govind Nandakumar, Consultant – Surgical Gastroenterology, Laparoscopic, GI Onco Surgery, Manipal Hospital Yeshwanthpur and Millers Road says, colorectal cancer is a cancer that can be prevented and cured, and early detection is key.

Symptoms may include bleeding with bowel movements, constipation, change in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, and anaemia, Dr Govind Nandakumar states.

By performing a simple colonoscopy early on, we can remove polyps and prevent colorectal cancer from developing. If diagnosed early, colon cancer can be cured with surgery. Minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgery techniques have made it possible for patients to be discharged early, and recovery time is shortened, he said.

Even if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, such as the lungs, liver, or peritoneum, there is still hope for a cure. It’s important not to ignore any warning signs or symptoms of colorectal cancer, Dr Nandakumar says.

March is celebrated as the Colorectal Cancer awareness month.

New Delhi: Since Covid, the cases of heart attack are increasing rapidly. Along with the elderly, there has also been an increase in cases of heart attack and sudden cardiac death among the youth, said doctors at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi.

Dr Tarun Kumar, Professor, Department of Cardiology, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Delhi, said, “Many cases of sudden cardiac death have been seen, in which many cases of sudden fainting or heart attack while doing gym have come to the fore. Many such videos have also come to the fore, in which people suddenly fell and died while dancing or walking. Such cases are heart attack patients only, in which there are cases of sudden cardiac death. The cause of sudden cardiac death is heart attack only.”

Dr Tarun also stated that cases of influenza virus H3N2 have also come to the fore in the present time itself, in which symptoms like cough, cold, fever and body ache are seen.

He said, “Difficulty in breathing is also seen. Many times the patient also needs to be admitted to the hospital, but nothing can be said about whether there has been an increase in heart attack cases due to this virus. But after the coronavirus, it has been seen that there has been an increase in the cases of heart attack and more cases are being reported among the elderly as well as among the youth.”

“Recently a case of heart attack was reported in a 20-year-old man and heart attack cases have increased in the youth for some time, the main reason behind this is the change in your lifestyle during corona. The eating habits of people have changed. People are also moving towards bad lifestyle instead of a healthy lifestyle. Due to the increase in weight of many people, their lifestyle has also changed,” he added.

The doctor also highlighted that earlier heart attack was mostly seen in people of 60 years of age, but now cases of heart attack are also coming in the youth of 20 to 30 years of age and the important reason behind this can be your bad lifestyle, unhealthy food, smoking and consumption of alcohol etc.

Dr Tarun Kumar further said, “If there is any problem like chest pain, or difficulty in breathing in the youth, then do not ignore it. Because many times it is seen that many symptoms appear before a heart attack, but the youth ignore it thinking that this problem is not seen in them but in people of 50 to 60 years of age. It can happen in people of any age, that’s why if any symptoms are seen, it is very important to consult a doctor immediately and get your test done.”

“Along with this, do exercise daily for a healthy lifestyle, and avoid smoking and consuming alcohol. Along with this inculcate healthy lifestyle habits in children below 20 years of age to reduce the cases of art attacks in youth,” he added.

Director of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Dr Ajay Shukla said, “You see, all of these things have multiple reasons, right? One is that many people have a very sedentary lifestyle. Many people eat junk food. Many people are stressed because of either exams or jobs, you know. So, there are a lot of factors. And plus, of course, the medical sciences have advanced tremendously, and we are able to diagnose things faster. So earlier things used to happen and we didn’t know what happened. So now you get to know what happened. And so all of these things together, awareness, alertness, and patience, and reaching the hospital faster has helped.”

“Basically, it’s about lifestyle. So eat less sugar, eat less salt, and do some exercise. If you have got to run around then just do yoga. Yoga is a great exercise, right? And keep yourself active. Try to avoid stress in life. So these are the things which are in your hands,” he added.
